I'm not too familiar with receivers (or amps), so I appreciate videos like this. Helps me learn not just about the specific receiver, but receivers in general.
THANK YOU so much for your time in making this video. I am an old school guy, 'Lost in the 1960's' so I really appreciate it. To begin with, I LOVE Marantz audio equipment. I still have my Marantz 4270 receiver that I bought in 1972 for $730 CDN at that time. It still works perfectly although it has a few front panel lights that are burned out. However, I am looking to step up to a modern Marantz AV Digital Home Theatre system that won't break the bank. So I'm considering the NR 1711 and you have been very helpful. With some new speakers and the new Marantz unit plus a new Samsung OLED 65 inch TV, I will probably be shelling out about $4,500 dollars CDN to reach the PROMISED LAND. Anyway it's just my humble opinion, but I don't think you can go wrong with Marantz. I plan to repair my old 4270 and keep my records and CD player so I can still enjoy stereo music too. Maybe I can use the NR 1711 in two channel mode to that end as well.
Great video, thanks! I’ve recently got back into Hifi. In the past I had high end monoblocks, separate DAC and preamp, towers etc. It kind of left me cold for enjoyment of listening to music sometime and lots of fussing too. This year I’ve been using a slightly older version Marantz, the 1605. Just a 2.1 setup with Wharfedale Denton 85th Anniversary speakers and an SVS SB1000 pro. So engaging and musical, I really like it for music and movies, and I listen a lot more than I used to with my old setup. Lots of flexibility too, can play with bass management or not. I did use a Niles external 100 watt amp from the pre outs, it was good, but there’s a nice flavour to the Marantz’s baked in amp sound I like. Enjoying the channel,
I bougth the smaller brother NR-1710 and I'm very satisfied with the performance of this receiver . I love the capability to use the pre outs to install a new more powerful amp for the front speakers that I will do in the future. Great review !
Truly appreciate the deep work you've put into reviewing this unit. LOVE the personal opinions (very similar to mine - not much of a center channel guy either - just a small example). Two comments: 1. I am yet to discover whether 2x50W is powerful enough for music - which is mainly what I am getting this unit for, and 2. It only has 2 PRE outs, not 7 - in case I happen to need a bit more juice from an external power amp. But with music this shouldn't be a huge concern anyway. Considering its compactness, the rest of the functionality, AND the quality of its sound, it's a solid deal for me.
Thank you for the review. I bought one yesterday in the UK. I was going for a DENON 2700 but we are having Custom import issues and stock shortage from most AV retailers. So I took the opportunity to grab this one. I will test it out but from older slim line model reviews I think I made a good choice.
So what's the verdict? I have been doing exactly the same thing as yourself as the 2700 would appear to be more for less. Anyway I am about to buy this one...when it's back in stock, but I am interested to know what your opinion is if you would be so kind.
The Kwaze you won’t believe this but just being very honest here. I had Marantz NR1711. Loved it for music and movies. As you know we humans never satisfied, as I write this I have a SR7015 sitting on my coffee table to return back to the shop. I used it over the weekend and I swear the 1711 sounded more impressive. So I will send back this amp costing nearly 3 times the cost of the NR1711 and buy the NR 1711 AGAIN! 2nd time. I have proof of purchase from richer sounds. Paid £599. Obtained a refund for the SR7015 which cost me £1400. Buy this amp as the effects are amazing but you do need to be patient as it needs about 24 hours before it warms up to a decent performance. Took me few days to tweak and I spent same time on the advanced 7015 model and sooo Disappointed in the results. You would expect better performance but it was dull in performance. I have the Q Acoustics 3010i front and back and the 3090ci as a centre and the sub 3060c. One thing I notices the Audyssey XT 32 performed worse than the room treatment of Audyssey on the NR1711. Why is that? However when the SR7015 picked up the sub first time it sent super sounding rumble to the sub which the NR1711 did not because of XT32 Audyssey was getting excited! But post correction the SR7015 sounded so lame and only thing I could really give credit for was music sounded less muddy and gave some clarity. But the last straw of packing up the SR7015 was when the centre speaker gave no presence and my Panasonic Dolby ATMOS TV sounded better. Speaker level on centre after correction was -5Db. I had to adjust to +3Db to get any noise, and that noise sounded muffled and distorted on sound track from movies. However its speed and sonic performance equally matched the NR1711 obviously, and maybe I am missing something, there was no wow factor from the 7015 and I am dialling up volume past 50 to 60 to get any sound. I did not need to do that with 1711. It was good at 45-50 for same movie. However the missing something I kind of picked up was a cooler detail from 7015 which maybe I did not appreciate. It felt like a dying flower. I am no expert in Audio but I am a network Engineer and systems Analyst and I am comfortable around all tech but what the hell went wrong with Marantz when they built this 7015 with HDAM, 2 X SHARC Griffin chipsets same as the 8015 and Denon 8500, with iMAX and Auro3D did not matter. It should sound better without correction for music and films. Period. The fact it weighs 15 Kilos which strained my back LOL and nursing a pulled muscle did not give any benefit to me as a consumer looking for the spectacular performance. Also the NR`1711 handled the CEC HDMI control and gave on screen display which I could not get working on the 7015. The reviews from websites on this product are excellent and that does not make sense. If your into scientific measurements the Marantz getting poor reviews from Amir at ASR. I guess the 1711 without HDAM, or quality components is the secret sauce of its performance, and I believe out weighs the performance of its bigger siblings. If you need the extra channels and power obviously you want to upgrade. drive.google.com/file/d/1R3KBQ0T0GlEkclAwNygeNpVb79s8nvLt/view?usp=sharing drive.google.com/file/d/1gsjiSy04848gUTXW7RyzbOeKehq5gPS-/view?usp=sharing drive.google.com/file/d/1UaCpFXdqgyh6WiX3BYj6MwK-4JBsyWh2/view?usp=sharing
@@BestSEO1 That is interesting and unusual and on the good side you have extra dosh to blow on something frivolous! I managed to find a 1711 so have been honing the setup which is always a challenge, but it is now pretty much set up to do what I want. The Audyssey feature makes a big difference, but I cannot figure out where I can see what eq has been changed etc., as I like to keep the front pair flat for music. I only seem to be able to save one preset setup as well, unless there is something I am missing, as I understand there should be three available? In comparison to my previous Yamaha amp the Marantz surround sound has better separation, but is no better with music, so a little disappointing there. To be fair my Micromega CD Player has just clapped out, the way they frequently do, so I have been using my Cambridge Audio Blu Ray player to play CD’s which isn’t great so I’m not really comparing like for like. Overall I like it and would certainly recommend it especially if space is a limitation.
Many thanks fir this more indepth review of this amp. I git the Emotiva TA1 based on your recommendation, but will consider upgrading to this. All the best to you all.
Hi Randy. Been really enjoying your content lately you're up there with my favourite reviewers right now. Keep doing what you're doing it's a vital service giving people affordable audio alternatives. And btw has anyone ever told you you look just like Dennis Miller! lol.
I have one of these and was looking for info in a few of the advanced uses, some stuff mentioned here I didn't know about thanks! For a computer though don't go optical or coax as the quality will be worse. Use HDMI, it just comes up as an HDMI audio device and, unlike some audio devices supports uncompressed 7.1 audio over HDMI so you can just use PCM mode on the PC, have that do all the audio decoding, pass the uncompressed audio to the AVR and have it play it directly. Works great.
Nice review, recently picked up an NR1510 and using an MM7025 140w x2 amp to power my front Paradigm Prestige mains and it's pretty awesome. The Marantz has replaced my old Anthem MRX 310 that was starting to give me some power issues. I really like the Marantz because it has the warm character of the "famous Marantz sound" which helps to tame the Paradigm's slight brightness. The main reason for this note is you mentioned connecting the computer using USB to optical connection - why wouldn't you use an HDMI connection? You eliminate the need for a DAC, get the premium sound and also get video.
I got this marantz after watching this review, omg what a sound after audyssey mic calibration, awesome 5.1 with Dali Oberon speakers, cant ask for more, thank you so much for this awesome review of marantz nr1711 i paid £799 from peter tyson uk✌️
I just got this amp the other week and find it's plenty powerful enough for me. My speakers don't actually have much information on them but I'd imagine they are 8ohms and their sensitivity isn't very high. It's running a 5.1 set up perfectly fine and plenty loud enough. I'd imagine adding another 2 speakers for 7.1 would also be okay.
Thanks for your review. I bought one of these and I'm very happy with the performance. I upgraded at the same time as my flat screen tv as I wanted to use the best technology that both could offer (my previous TV was 14 years old and the receiver 20 years old!) so this was quite an upgrade. I could have got away with the NR1510 as I'm only running a five channel setup but I wanted the best features and hardware connectivity. A key reason for going with the NR1711 was its slim form factor as well as the fact that I run a Marantz two channel system which I've been very happy with. For two channel audio (CD/vinyl) I prefer my older class AB setup for now. On the other hand for AV I'm very impressed with the NR1711. The eARC integration with the new Samsung TV is perfect, I was impressed how well it worked as well the quality. There's no problem with the 50W per channel output for my medium sized room, I run the volume at ~60 dB depending on the soundtrack. Setup and room calibration were easy although with one wrinkle I couldn't set up my rear speakers on their own, I had to set them as surround speakers. That said it doesn't seem to have affected the output. There are more features than I'll ever use on this unit but for I want it to do, it's working well. Y
Yeah I had the same thing with the rear speakers, but as you say it works fine setting them up as surround speakers. Having sorted out the setup variables to get it all working, my only challenge left is getting the volume to match up with my tv.
Randy, Long time follower, first comment. You have taught me just about everything I know about audio in the past year. I can't thank you enough! Incredible job. I have the nr1711 connected to my TV via e-arc. There is a very audible difference in sound quality between this wired connection and listening to music over the on-board wifi on the marantz. Any idea why? I'd prefer not to have my TV on during every listening session but it just sounds so much better than wifi. Bluetooth is probably even worse but you have already taught me about that (codecs!). Thanks Randy. I hope to see your channel continue to thrive.
This is an old video but glad I found it. I just bought the 1711 because it was on sale. You gave me information that I can apply to any stereo system. I have a Denon x3200w for power/music. I didn't know that in direct/pure mode, you need to set receiver to lft+main. Thanks!!
Great review. I have one on the way, to replace my 14 year old Yamaha AV amp DSP-AX763, and I'm very excited! I like the size, and I suspect it will be power efficient too. Greetings from the UK.
I had many receivers from Yamaha -Herman kardon - Denon and marantz, I always liked marantz more, there sound is more meaty, although the denon is was also good but only when I went to a higher tier. Marantz slim which I still have one ( nr1506) I believe and it’s in my other room sound great for a small receiver. I point is for multichannel Can’t go wrong with Marantz .
Wow talk about a difference between this and your previous version. Great job, almost like you flipped a switch. Kind if wished I saw this video before the previous.
Thanks for this review. I was questioning my Marantz 1609's capabilities. I upgraded (smirk) from the bottom of the barrel Klipsch towers to some Emotiva T0's and started tweaking settings and wow - this thing opened up with 2 channel music playing. Since the T0's are 4 ohm speakers, it pushes them well. I like your honesty, and since there's not much difference from the 1609 to the 1711 model I was able to learn a few things from this video. I hate watching your videos because now I'm wondering what the T1's will sound like; but then I'd definitely want to add a separate amp for those monsters. Thanks for the great reviews aimed at low budget folks like me that like to get the most for their money.
Got mine it's a 5.1 setup with Dali suite 4 ohm. And to honest for such receiver I was shocked there is a lot of power unbelievable got hot thru but with a good cooler no problems
Now if you are wondering, the NR1711 has no problem whatsoever if you are watching movies or playing games at 4K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz YCbCr 4:2:2 signals (32Gbps) or anything below that so in most cases you are going to be absolutely fine. This means that the PS5 will work without any problems. In the rare case where the receiver accepts a 4K/120Hz RGB signal (8-bit, 10-bit, 12-bit), like from the Xbox Series X for example, this is when this problem will appear and the only current workaround is to connect your source device directly to your TV and from the eARC connection to the receiver. To be honest this is a problem that should not happen in the first place and shows that somewhere there has been a major miscommunication between manufacturers but you should keep in mind that this will probably not affect you as much as you may think of. Right now this problem seems to affect all new AV receivers in 2020 including Denon, Marantz and Yamaha and we are still waiting for news about how they decide to handle this situation.
I have non stop hdmi handshake issues with this on earc running an Apple TV into it works but the handshake from the tv back to the receiver works sporadically at best. And it’s not gaming. It’s just regular tv.
Maybe I don't like ur channel, jk, every time I see another vid you either change my mind on something I thought I was sure about or you make me want another component that I didn't think I needed in the 1st place, so good job on that... Also your lighting and/or focus issues are severely distracting, I'm sure you already knew that. For real, you're my new favorite TH-cam time waster, keep it up and thanks again!
I’m working hard on trying to fix the camera issues. I’m quite new at all of this. Appreciate the support and the videos will get better. It’s definitely a learning process for the production.
How does it compare with stereo recievers for music? I recently bougt the IOTA SA3 and it sounds great with cd's and records. My needs have changed and now I need an AVR and I would prefer a slim avr like this one. But I dont want to loose the very good stereo music
just ordered the nr1711 today as my kenwood krf-v7090d from 2005 looses the front left channel. so excited to check out if it will sound better then the old kenwood with double the watt-power than the marantz.
I just ordered a used Pioneer Elite Vsx 45 used I couldn't get a low end receiver that could do everything I wanted . I hope I got a good choice . I really wanted to buy my first brand new receiver but I couldn't afford it at this time. I did buy the Sony bookshelves which I love I haven't gotten the Pioneer yet.
The Yamaha 8K tsr-700 is still $400 from Costco. It’s going to be the budget king until they quit selling it, lol. That said, I’m looking for something like this for my PC, for theater, games, and music while I’m working or working out. Bit overkill, but it’s gotten hard to get good 5.1 digital out of a gaming PC. And this would do that and everything else…but I could still get another yamaha for half the price and it does about the same!
my refurbed nr1609 didn't make it 3 years before showing signs of amp failure - power off from cold start/DC protection, worsening to the point where it won't power on at all now. these things sound quite good and have a fantastic feature set, but they need their own air conditioning to keep cool. yes, i'm salty.
I'd like this receiver for my analog stuff: CRT gaming, vinyl, CD/DVD changer, Laserdisc, Betamax, and VHS with surround sound. I'd like a separate receiver for my modern 4K TV, Blu-Ray changer, Xbox One, Wii U, Switch, and PS4
Excellent content in your videos. You mentioned that you don’t use a center channel speaker and I have also thought that a lot of these compression or effect settings either distort or change up music from its original intent. A video of your thoughts on this if you haven’t made one already would be greatly appreciated.
Randy I am thinking about picking the NR1711 to replace old Pioneer Elite receiver (an class D slimline). I would like to know if you have tried out using the NR1711 as a pre-amp for a Vidar or your Emotiva power Amp. The question is, how well does the NR1711 serve as a Stereo pre-amp?
Randy could you possibly review the Yamaha RX-V6A? It's $599 4k/8k 7.2 Atmos receiver that competes with the marantz, denon, and Onkyo receivers in the $800 range.
Can you do a walk-through video on Amazon music Hd. Trying to decide on a music service. I've tried Amazon HD had trouble getting the HD 24 bit versions
Would this power the Polk s60 or even make the s20 sound magical? If not What would you recommend for the S60’s? I’m getting ready to buy and it’s gonna be 70% music with future purchases for a small home theatre. Thanks! Love your channel.
Hello Randy! I would love to see you review the $200 cheaper, 2-channel stereo AVR w/ HDMI, 75-watt per channel, version, the Marantz NR1200. Unlike the $499 Denon DRA-800H, which many compare the NR1200 to, the Marantz for $100 more gives you better, dual DACs, a 2nd subwoofer output, better/larger capacitors and amp section, and pre-amp outs for an upgrade path to add an external amp in the future if needed. I hope you can fit this one into your busy schedule and I KNOW your subscribers would LOVE it. If I don't die from shoveling snow today, in Chicago, I hope to read your response. Take care, good sir!
Ive had my NR1200 for about 3 weeks. They are currently $649 when you can find them, I was lucky enough to get pre-pandemic pricing of $599. I’m running Sony SSCS5 for now since my wallet was a little light after picking up the Marantz. It’s damn powerful at 75 by 2. Even though the sony are 6 ohm i keep the Marantz at 8 ohm.....matter of fact I don’t think I’d ever run it at 6 or 4 ohm even if i had 4 ohm speakers cause thats just some BS circuit they have to put in there to cut the available current to meet requirements to say they can officially rate them for 6 and 4 ohm speakers. Anyway i got sidetracked but if theres any questions you have about the NR1200 don’t hesitate to ask
Hi I’ve got the Marantz NR1711 7.2 Channel Slimline AV Receiver coming in a couple of days having watched for review on it a couple of time. One reason I thought it would be a good choice was I’ve an old Marantz stereo amp which I thought could be the power amp? I also have the old Sonos connect amp and the new Sonos amp. None are being used at the moment. Please can you offer any advise on which I could use. Thank you Mike
The low watts for 8 ohms is frustrating. This is perfect for me and while I am getting high sensitivity speakers, still would love this to be at least at least 80 watts in order to future proof myself in case I get even bigger speakers down the line.
In order for you to hear the slightest audible difference in volume, you would need to double the originally referenced 50 watts of the Marantz receiver. So you would need to go to 100 watts to hear the +3db difference. For it to be twice as loud, you would need 10x the original power, so 500 watts. My point is, for most efficient, 8 ohm speakers, this is a great amplifier. I have 3 of the slim line receivers, an NR-1403, NR-1602, and NR1606. I've tried many different speakers and have never been disappointed. Currently using Sony Core bookshelves rated at 6 ohms and the amp doesn't even get warm (NR1606). However, if you are going for 2 channel or 2.1 channel only set ups, I'd look at the NR-1200 which has the same chassis and is rated at 75 watts per channel (2 channel stereo amp only). It has multiple DACs and larger capacitors. Good luck!
Thank you Randy for this video. I am considering to buy this with a pair of Polks r600. I will eventually buy the polk atmos modules also. Will the receiver be able to drive these well considering 50 watts? Thank you!
Hey Randy , I recently purchased the Fluance Signature Series Home Theater System along with the 10 inch Sub . I was previously listening to the Fluance Elite Series Compact Home Theater and a 6.5 inch Yamaha Sub with a RX V383 Yamaha 5.1 Receiver . While my Yamaha works really well on me Elite System , it seems to fall a bit short on my Signature Series . What AV Receiver 5.1 preferably Yamaha or another brand would you recommend for around 600 - 700 bucks to work my Signature Series to a more full potential ? Any ideas , Thanks and I do appreciate your videos .
Hi Randy, first, sorry for my english (I'm french). Do you think that this marantz with q acoustic 3020 + subwoofer will work fine? (The 3020 is a little "hard" with the high mediums, maybe it will be more soft?) Thanks
Hi. Thank you for the video. I have a question to whoever has the experience with connecting external amp to power the front speakers. What setup options do I choose to make it work on nr1711? Thank you
I came very close to buying this on your recommendation. After stewing for a while and some more research, I went with the bigger brother, Denon x3700h. Double the power sold it for me.
I was going for a bit of a smaller form factor but power on movies and tv is more important because it can be so dynamic. Glad you got what you needed. I just like the looks of this one...
@@juandoe7802 I don't think it gets particularly hotter than any other A/B receiver. It does have a thermal protection circuit but mine has never gotten "hot" or gone into thermal protection
Just too good. Very very informative and educational. Regards from Antonio, Goa, India. You see I have Marantz MM 7055 and a preamp AV 7005, but my HDMI Board is dead, I can only get sound out to my TV but cannot get the picture recently. Do you think that if I purchase this, it will solve my problem? Also I don’t have Heos in my previous set up . Could you lend me your cents on this matter please? Do reply, and thank in advance.
Hi Randy, do you think the the Marantz NR1711 has enough power for a 15x20 room? I'm running a 3.1 system with towers for the left and right. I'm going to go with this one or the SR5015 but trying to keep the cost down. Great video!
Hi Randy, I currently have a Klipsh RP 5.1 setup, and I use 3 different amps/receivers for my various needs. Its many boxes and switches. I'm looking for a one box does it all receiver. I currently have a cheap 15 year old Sony HD receiver, a vintage Pioneer Solid State for music, and a stereo tube amp I prefer for most of my records. I want the warmth for music and all the 4K capabilities and room correction of a modern receiver. I was looking at the 1711, but not sure it can compete musically. I was also looking at the 6015 - not that I need 9.2. I really don't, but I read that the 6015 has better components/transformer and room correction than even the 5015, which might sound a lot better for my stereo music needs? OR would the 1711+ an integrated stereo be better yet, especially considering home theater is less important to me (but i still want 4k/5.1)? Would appreciate your thoughts!!
Im new into better music listening. How is this Marantz in comparable with Denons integrated amps like 600ne for Music listening? I heard Marantz is better for music, what is ur opinion ? And if so which Marantz amp/receiver is best to buy - up to 1k - again only for music no gaming etc..? Thanks so much.
I have the 1711 and I love it. I have Martin Logan speakers which are 4ohm speakers. How do you set up the receiver to 4ohms. I know you just dont plug in your speakers. I have been trying to find this out for awhile.
I loved this video. Thank you very much! After a lot of research, this is the receiver I'm planning to buy. One question: What would be a better speaker pairing for this? Struggling to decide between Klipsch RP-500M or Kef LS50 I love the Kef design, but I'm not sure how much better the sound would be. Cheers!
@@cheapaudioman Thanks for the quick reply! Even if I'm going to use them in a small apartment room and probably never going to use them VERY loud? I really like the KEF's design as well as the slim profile of the NR1711 :)
Hi randy, great video...I’m looking to get a 1711 for av but. Also pair with a rega rp3 turntable...I’m aware that a pre amp and a separate stereo amp may be the best route for hi if...I was hoping to try it in this first and see how it sounded....and the look at maybe the pre out option.....thoughts....
Does it support Tidal? Can I connect external power amps for front and center and run 5.1 or 7.1 setup? I have old but powerful nad 7 ch. Power amp. Looking for affordable pre amp really for 5.1 or 7.1 sound and good stereo siund. I use your recommended motiva b1+ speakers....
Is it possible to connect a microphone to this unit for karaoke applications? I currently have a chromecast running into the marantz 1711 and I have a portable karaoke system which isn't so great. I have picked up the Pyle PMXU43BT Mixer (for use with my Shure SM58 Mic into PC applications for leading virtual meetings). I think given the number of RCA inputs available running into the Marantz 1711, I don't have an issue having the vocals going to the marantz, but I recognize that it is likely a different source input and thereby am guessing the marantz might only be able to play from one source at a time. I'm hoping you might have an idea of how I could accomplish this. Any thoughts?
I know this is an old video, I bought this receiver about a year ago. Since then I've just had two speakers and a sub connected, I set it up with amp assign. If I want to add more speakers do I need to use the amp assign every time? I connected a speaker to center channel and it's like the channel doesn't exist.
I was on the fence about ordering this receiver,,i did ordered it yesterday,,i need the slim form factor..thanks for the easy to understand review,I haven't been happy with my Yamaha sr601..i recently purchased cerwin vega dc-1 in great condition..does anyone have a opinion if this receiver has enuogh power to drive them well.?. thanks for any feedback.
Great video! I took notes of your notes! Do you think I can use an army of Sony bookshelf speakers and set up a good Atmos home theater setup with this unit?
Could you show us how to set it up without the center channel with this receiver? Also what speakers do you recommend with this receiver? Anything low profile
First, before I start asking questions😀 Understand you are responding to a 56 year old man who gave up on surround 30 years ago. Had a Sony receiver that gave up the ghost and I just went back to 2 channel. How easy is it to operate? Or should I ask how steep is the learning curve? I also listen to Amazon Hd almost exclusively with some Spotify. Also, you May have just altered my future purchasing path. Once the son is out of college in another two years I had planned on buying an integrated tube amp. But most of my listening is streaming. I had about 800 cds burned in an apple laptop that crashed and burned and Apple could not retrieve anything. I was pissed. Still have my cds but I’m not going to burn them all again. Had I known then what I know now, I would have saved them to nas. Anyway, this streaming capability has aroused my curiosity. Have a couple separate amps so the preamp out is also great. How much of a pain is it to use is my biggest question. Thanks Randy
Louie, Well, I won't tell you that's it's easy. Setting up the receiver can be pretty involved with all of the different settings. The streaming portion of it is pretty straight forward. Really, once the Heos portion is set up you don't even need to mess around in the Heos app, just go to your amazon music hd app and click on the "cast" button and your receiver will be right there and off you go. This will only play in CD quality... which is fine with me. You can use the Heos app and go into amazon that way, but it doesn't bring in any of your playlists or saved music through the app. For a NAS I think that it's a great long term solution and maybe one you can work towards. In the interim you could look at a 10tb drive to slowly start ripping your cds to so when you're ready you can transfer them to a NAS after you get one in a couple of years. There are some very interesting streamers out there too. I just reviewed one that is a little amp included with an amp. May be a way to get your feet wet and you can always use it with your other integrated later as it has Preamp outs. amzn.to/3mW276D
From what I can tell, they've mainly slapped a much heftier/well built case on the 1711, but they've also added more 8k hdmi (4 iirc, opposed to just one on the 1711). I'd love to see a side by side, though!
hi Randy, just found your channel, good breakdown of the products, I have a question re:nr1711 can i run 5.1 and have the 2 front speakers (or front 2 channels) power by external amp? thanks.
I hope you are enjoying the ARC. I bought it 4, 5 weeks ago and I do like it for music. However I went with this AMP for movies. I felt the ARC lacked a little surround capabilities. I felt the ARC performed better surround in PCM mode. The Dolby ATMOS was disappointing.
I have a nr1711 with the elac unif ub52 and uc52 speakers for the front and center channels. Do you think it has enough power to run another set of UB52 speakers for the rear channels and still sound good?
I am in the process of building a system that will be used for music and movies. Thinking of using B&W 607 S2 for the fronts and the previous model B&W 607 for the surrounds. I understand they are rated at 8ohms but Steve Guttenberg says that they can dip to 4ohms. I'm not 100% sure on the implications of this but do you know if this receiver would be happy powering that kind of setup? Thanks, really enjoy your reviews.
I already thought you were trying to say it's a class B amplifier, but it was a real bee. Bees are on the edge of extinction part of humanity will follow them, so don't kill bees!
I have a Marantz NR1711 and 7 speakers with 1 subwoofer. How do I play music on all speakers? By default it only plays music (via iPhone Bluetooth) on front 3 + 1 subwoofer
I thought I would ask and maybe I would get a response. I like this unit on what it gives and size. But my concern is the 100w over 7 speakers. I have two kiff q750 towers and two smaller q350 as sides. I have an 180w r right now it last legs so dropping to 100w scares me. What your take? Oh one more thing it for bdray movies mostly. And streaming.
I don't know the sensitivities of those speakers except for the q350's. This is actually only rated at 50 watts per channel. Personally, I think that is enough for everything that I throw at it and this power rating is a legitimate power rating where most avr's are not. If you think it's not enough I would stick with a higher end marantz or denon. I'm not confident in the other brands claimed power ratings. this also has rca preamp out for front channels so if you feel the need you can add a separate power amp for the front channels. In my experience I've never felt like this receiver has struggled to power anything that I've had including an 85db/4ohm speaker.
Hi. Can I use the preouts to connect to an integrate amp? In other words i would only use the NR11 for central and surround speakers. Can I do that? The front (R/L) speakers would be "pushed" by the integrated. obs: I have big floorstading front speakers for my stereo and very small (bose) central and surround speakers
So you could if but you’d need to balance the integrated amps volume with the marantz. Better option would just be a power amp but it can be done. Then you’d just select whatever input you connected them to on the integrated. You’ll be dealing with basically 2 pre amps though and that may introduce some distortion but I’d doubt you could hear it
@@cheapaudioman Thanks for your reply. My integrated amp has a 2-channel input with passthrough (no volume control)... so I think that it works as a power, right? So all volume control will be made by the marantz.
Jeffrey, the NR1711 & 1710 are 7.2 channel receivers and the NR1506 is a 5.2. the newer versions add HEOS platform for WIFI streaming, newer DAC, and whatever newer surround sound and video processing. Sound-wise, they have the EXACT same amplifier section so they should sound EXACTLY the same. I have an NR1606 and NR1602 and the NR1606 is just set up as a 2.1 system and I love it. Unless you want to add an extra pair of amplified surround channels, I would not update. Your NR1506 is a fantastic unit!
on nr1607 (that's pretty similar) headphone out is able to overpower Senns HD650, it just sounds a bit muffled with an external headphone amp/dac (i prefer external amp/dac to drive Senns, cleaner and tighter bass)
Okay, I'm confused, which is fairly common. Although it lists the specs as 2-channels driven, Crutchfield seems to suggest this unit supplies 50 w x 7 channels. From their site: 7-Channel Discrete Amplification: The Marantz NR1510 is equipped with a power amplifier that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels. Just wondering if you have any insight into what this means? Thanks
hey, alex. the power ratings on this amp are actually legitimate. I powered some tough to drive speakers on this including the Elac Unifi UB5's and the KEF LS50. It also has preamp outs so you could always add a more powerful amp for the front two channels. I have the JBL Stage A130's and this thing can make them hum
Marantz and Denon have had some serious supply chain and distribution issues the last 6 months. Hopefully they get it sorted. I know some dealers who have missed out on business because they can't keep product in. Its a very good piece of gear. I hope you'll enjoy it. Let me know what you think after you get it. Lots to dig into.
I've more or less given up with mine now. I watch a movie, then I have to reset everything to get the TV to work on it's own. This just repeats every time, no matter what HDMI/VIDEO settings I have.
@@Kwazart 1. On the Marantz unit: insert the HDMI cable in Monitor output; 2. On TV set: insert the other end of the HDMI cable in HDMI ARC slot; 3. Turn both devices ON; 4. press SETUP button on Marantz remote; 5. press INPUTS; 6. Press: INPUT ASSIGN; if you can't find TV Audio go back and chose hide sources and find it there
@@flufyfolder4892 I tried it earlier and your suggestion is exactly the same as how I have it set up. Now it's doing other irritating things not worth going into, but I will do a factory reset and start again and see how it goes. I've had surround amp systems for over 30 years and never had one with so many problems, but I'll persevere...thanks for the suggestions.
I'm not too familiar with receivers (or amps), so I appreciate videos like this. Helps me learn not just about the specific receiver, but receivers in general.
Thanks for the watch. I appreciate it.
Enjoying the channel,
I got the Marantz NR1510 and paired a Schiit Vidar amp in the pre outs for the front speakers...wonderful
I bougth the smaller brother NR-1710 and I'm very satisfied with the performance of this receiver . I love the capability to use the pre outs to install a new more powerful amp for the front speakers that I will do in the future. Great review !
Totally Agree. This AMP is equal in perfromance of its bigger models.
@@BestSEO1 It is a pity that only the black version is avaliable in USA !
Truly appreciate the deep work you've put into reviewing this unit. LOVE the personal opinions (very similar to mine - not much of a center channel guy either - just a small example). Two comments:
1. I am yet to discover whether 2x50W is powerful enough for music - which is mainly what I am getting this unit for, and

I love this smaller unit. Just doesn’t have the output I’d like. 50 watts per channel is not enough. Otherwise it’s got all the stuff.
Hi Randy. Been really enjoying your content lately you're up there with my favourite reviewers right now. Keep doing what you're doing it's a vital service giving people affordable audio alternatives. And btw has anyone ever told you you look just like Dennis Miller! lol.
Much appreciated!
You're welcome.
I have the Marantz av7005 preamp and the pure direct makes a difference in critical music listening. Marantz makes a quality product period.
Randy,
Long time follower, first comment.
Marantz always made good quality products
I had many receivers from Yamaha -Herman kardon - Denon and marantz, I always liked marantz more, there sound is more meaty, although the denon is was also good but only when I went to a higher tier. Marantz slim which I still have one ( nr1506) I believe and it’s in my other room sound great for a small receiver. I point is for multichannel Can’t go wrong with Marantz .
Much better review! Thanks for taking the advise!
Wow talk about a difference between this and your previous version. Great job, almost like you flipped a switch. Kind if wished I saw this video before the previous.
Ha. My first few videos were pretty bad and these aren’t much better. Still trying to get things better. Appreciate it. Thanks for watching again.
You dont necessary need to buy converter to playback from PC/laptop. If the laptop has hdmi, can set it to pass through audio to avr
When you said "Alexa" then mine woke up an started playing Nirvana Unplugged :)
I actually have the T1’s and I’m about ready to start spending some time with them
@@cheapaudioman let me know if it's worth the upgrade using nothing but that Marantz receiver...I still have 3 weeks to return these for a refund! 😉
@@cheapaudioman Did you check out the T1's yet? If so, is it worth the upgrade to go from the T0's to the T1's?
Great review. I may have to pick up this baby!
klipsch r51m are great value. i totally recommend them.
Thanks. Really enjoyed it.
@@cheapaudioman ya I bet the production and editing process is not the fun part...
So, Sunny, did you got it and how it feels so far?
They are fantastic as pre amps!! I have a NR1403 and NR1606 for two different two channel set ups with Emotiva amps and they sound amazing!!!!
@@ramondelgado6778 thanks!
Would be nice if you explained how to operate the amp to do the things you explained.
Take care, good sir!
love it. thanks for the suggestion.
Anyway i got sidetracked but if theres any questions you have about the NR1200 don’t hesitate to ask
great review.
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi I’ve got the Marantz NR1711 7.2 Channel Slimline AV Receiver coming in a couple of days having watched for review on it a couple of time. One reason I thought it would be a good choice was I’ve an old Marantz stereo amp which I thought could be the power amp? I also have the old Sonos connect amp and the new Sonos amp. None are being used at the moment. Please can you offer any advise on which I could use.
Thank you Mike
You kept activating my Alexa every time you said Alexa. I was playing this video through my stereo.
Love this review!!! Did u try denon x1600h?
Good luck!
You only need 1 watt to get 80dB or higher for most speakers. 50 watts at 8 ohm is plenty
@@cheapaudioman it really does give the best value, for sure. Which is kind of... your thing. 😉
Does the Denon overheat ? I've read reviews that it gets fairly hot?
@@juandoe7802 I don't think it gets particularly hotter than any other A/B receiver. It does have a thermal protection circuit but mine has never gotten "hot" or gone into thermal protection
I also ordered a top-mount front-firing fan unit. It keeps the unit at 80 degrees running fairly silent.
I have the NR1509, I wonder if I have the AK 4458 DAC? Do you think the NR1509 would push a pair of X-LS Encore's adequately?
I would be interested in knowing if you decided to go with this receiver combined with your Klipsch RP 5.1 and if you did how does it sound?
Im new into better music listening. How is this Marantz in comparable with Denons integrated amps like 600ne for Music listening? I heard Marantz is better for music, what is ur opinion ? And if so which Marantz amp/receiver is best to buy - up to 1k - again only for music no gaming etc..? Thanks so much.
The Denon PMA600NE does sound a bit better than the Marantz NR1711 for music alone. Are you just going to do 2 channel with a sub?
I have the 1711 and I love it. I have Martin Logan speakers which are 4ohm speakers. How do you set up the receiver to 4ohms. I know you just dont plug in your speakers. I have been trying to find this out for awhile.
I loved this video. Thank you very much! After a lot of research, this is the receiver I'm planning to buy.
One question: What would be a better speaker pairing for this?
Struggling to decide between Klipsch RP-500M or Kef LS50
I love the Kef design, but I'm not sure how much better the sound would be.
Cheers!
I’d go Klipsch. The KEFs are actually very power hungry. I drove the LS50’s off of this receiver but it does better higher efficiency speakers
Thanks for all the help guys, I appreciate it. Someone has already helped me out.
I was on the fence about ordering this receiver,,i did ordered it yesterday,,i need the slim form factor..thanks for the easy to understand review,I haven't been happy with my Yamaha sr601..i recently purchased cerwin vega dc-1 in great condition..does anyone have a opinion if this receiver has enuogh power to drive them well.?. thanks for any feedback.
love the video. you gotta lock that focus
Working on it!
Great video! I took notes of your notes! Do you think I can use an army of Sony bookshelf speakers and set up a good Atmos home theater setup with this unit?
For sure. It’s got a ton of options.
some more comments about sound quality? Thanks in Advance Mauro
Could you show us how to set it up without the center channel with this receiver? Also what speakers do you recommend with this receiver? Anything low profile
Do you know the THD when using more than 2 channels? For example for Bi-Amping the front?
...if you can get it, would love to see review of Yamaha R-N803 stereo reciver...
This amp is a winner.
Have a couple separate amps
so the preamp out is also great. How much of a pain is it to use is my biggest question.
Thanks Randy
Louie,
Well, I won't tell you that's it's easy.
@@cheapaudioman Thanks dude. Lots to think about now. Have a great New Years. 👍
Would love to see this against the new Marantz Cinema 70s. Did they just put a new face on this rig? Looks like the same stats.
From what I can tell, they've mainly slapped a much heftier/well built case on the 1711, but they've also added more 8k hdmi (4 iirc, opposed to just one on the 1711). I'd love to see a side by side, though!
Most importantly, the 70s has pre outs for all seven channels and better internal amplifier section.
hi Randy, just found your channel, good breakdown of the products, I have a question re:nr1711 can i run 5.1 and have the 2 front speakers (or front 2 channels) power by external amp? thanks.
that is correct, sir.
I bought the arc for the totally wireless feature for the sub and rears
I hope you are enjoying the ARC. I bought it 4, 5 weeks ago and I do like it for music. However I went with this AMP for movies. I felt the ARC lacked a little surround capabilities. I felt the ARC performed better surround in PCM mode. The Dolby ATMOS was disappointing.
Is the 5.1 Dolby digital
I have a nr1711 with the elac unif ub52 and uc52 speakers for the front and center channels. Do you think it has enough power to run another set of UB52 speakers for the rear channels and still sound good?
Elac's love power so while it'll work I'd suggest you add a 2 channel amp for the mains
Just flicked through again and clearly I wasn't paying enough attention at the beginning where you said it's perfectly fine powering 4ohm speakers!
I already thought you were trying to say it's a class B amplifier, but it was a real bee. Bees are on the edge of extinction part of humanity will follow them, so don't kill bees!
I have a NAD C316 BEE, myself!
I have a Marantz NR1711 and 7 speakers with 1 subwoofer. How do I play music on all speakers? By default it only plays music (via iPhone Bluetooth) on front 3 + 1 subwoofer
All Chanel stereo setting
Randy, (or anyone) can you tell me if the remote is backlit for this unit?
Can I pair it with bose - 5.1-channel acoustimass 10 series?
Marantz sent their army of robotic bees to make sure you got it right this time.
Is the 1711 or 1710 serie a big difference with the nr 1506? Playing on klipsch rp5000f? De basic specs looks the same to me
I only have experience with the 1711.
Old chips taste good :-)
Thinnest I can find so far, seems okay though still not 2U or thinner.
Then again, €799 cheapest shop is a lot.
How good is headphone amp on it? (I have 300Om headphones and Burson Audio Soloist SL for them, but it seems I need receiver for my 6 HDMIs devices)
on nr1607 (that's pretty similar) headphone out is able to overpower Senns HD650, it just sounds a bit muffled with an external headphone amp/dac (i prefer external amp/dac to drive Senns, cleaner and tighter bass)
hello, its possible to connect an equalizer to this marantz? thanks
Will this receiver be enough to power 2 Qaccoustics 3030i? The speakers are rated 45-75 watts.
For sure.
Okay, I'm confused, which is fairly common. Although it lists the specs as 2-channels driven, Crutchfield seems to suggest this unit supplies 50 w x 7 channels. From their site:
7-Channel Discrete Amplification: The Marantz NR1510 is equipped with a power amplifier that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels.
Just wondering if you have any insight into what this means? Thanks
You have to at least fix the bass with room correction otherwise you're not really hearing your Elac's, you're hearing the room. Bouyyyyy! :)
i love this. jsut wish there was a more powerful version to power my JBL arena 130s better.. something closer to 80w
hey, alex. the power ratings on this amp are actually legitimate. I powered some tough to drive speakers on this including the Elac Unifi UB5's and the KEF LS50. It also has preamp outs so you could always add a more powerful amp for the front two channels. I have the JBL Stage A130's and this thing can make them hum
this was a good review. thanks mel gibson.
Been waiting a month for Amazon UK to get stock to ship mine :-(
Marantz and Denon have had some serious supply chain and distribution issues the last 6 months. Hopefully they get it sorted. I know some dealers who have missed out on business because they can't keep product in. Its a very good piece of gear. I hope you'll enjoy it. Let me know what you think after you get it. Lots to dig into.
How do you adjust the base on this system?
I've more or less given up with mine now. I watch a movie, then I have to reset everything to get the TV to work on it's own. This just repeats every time, no matter what HDMI/VIDEO settings I have.
Kwaze, all you need to do is to press TV Audio button on your remote.
Press: INPUT ASSIGN; if you can't find TV Audio go back and chose hide sources and find it there
@@Kwazart and don't forget to set your TV to outsource the sound to HDMI instead to TV Speakers
