I remember reading somewhere that there was actually someone who went and interviewed the team that worked on both this show at CartoonNetwork and the team that made American Dragon Jake Long at Disney, and members of both teams said they had no idea of the existence of the other show when they were making their respective shows.
So the idea of a show about a young Asian teenager in a major US city, who has mystical "chosen one" powers, who keeps the balance between the magical world and the real world, has an old talking dog advisor, and is taught by their grandparent who was the prior keeper of balance, somehow happened at both studios separately but around the same time.

Happens surprisingly often. Makes me wonder if studios look for or hire people to do gather data on stuff that's cool right now and then green light shows/movies that hit enough targets, then just rely on common tropes to help fill the show out.

I am working on writing a story and I always yell swears at the tv when I’m watching a new show and they show some concept I already had written down for sometimes months ago. Sometimes artists are also pulling from same subject matter hence similar conclusions (See Osmosis Jones and Cells at Work)
As an professor of mine said “No idea is truly original. If you have an idea, someone else has come up with it too. You need to put work into it to make it your own.”

The 2000s always felt like the Age of Asian-American Cartoons.
Three Delivery aired in 2008, I think the W.I.T.C.H cartoon aired around then too, and while only one of the main characters had some Asian ancestry/aesthetics, it was her grandmother who basically guided the team.

  • @makoman295
    @makoman295 2 ปีที่แล้ว +346

For as weird as it is to say, I've always thought that Juniper Lee and American Dragon we're both complete coincidences despite how hard that would be to be believed.
A hidden magical world where myths and fairytales have lived alongside the human world isn't exactly an original premise but it is an interesting one with different ways to be explored. A large city is the easiest way to have the most possible diversity.
A main character with an Asian background allows for an easier way to have an excuse for martial arts training and a mystical connection spiritually in some way. Making them half American helps connect them more to the American audience watching.
A wise grand parent that was in their grand child's shoes and now acts as a mentor is common. Plus everyone loves a cool grandparent. (Also an annoying younger sibling is relatable too.)
The outlier to me is the talking dog, honestly. I think when you picture what a pug would sound like, New Yorker comes to mind (I think Men in Black helped cement that, if J was Asian it'd be pretty close to this premise too.). But kids love dogs and a dog with a funny accent is just icing on the cake.
Sometimes these things just happen, maybe something slipped between the companies with how close they were in development. But like I said, to me this was 100% a coincidence.

This show is in my top 10 favorite cartoons of my lifetime, largely for its great humor, but special mention goes to a scene you don't often see many "hero/protector" shows do, and one I think could have led to a much deeper show/series of episodes if it had been willing to be that sort of show, which it wasn't but I still love it bringing it up at least.
In the Dog Show Afternoon episode, the second to last episode of Season 2, Juniper learns she can NEVER leave Orchid Bay city. All her hopes, all her dreams, none of it matters, she physically has to stay in the city and is unable to leave, and her only hope for freedom is having kids so that the title / role is passed down to one of her children. Juniper proceeds to loudly proclaim exactly how unfair this is, exactly how much good she's done, and exactly the fact that SHE DIDNT CHOOSE THIS, it was forced upon her. She will someday HAVE TO get married and HAVE TO have kids so that the protection line continues, she doesn't get a choice in the matter. I loved that scene in this show. For once a show shows the curse of being a hero, of what it means to someone who never got asked if they wanted to be one but got it forced upon them,.There is a darker story to explore there, how little freedom she actually has in her role, exactly how unfair it is that no amount of good she does or world-saving she does will ever be enough to earn her hr freedom, her choice of what to do next. The best she can hope for is a life built around passing it to someone else so she has a few years of the freedom she was always denied.
That scene cemented this show as one of my top 10 favorite in my life.

Looking back, this show had...a lot of potential, in my opinion. I loved some of the characters (June, Ahma and Lela being three of them,) the action was good and the comedy was kind of amusing. However, there were two nitpicks I had towards the show that have stayed with me all these years.
    1. The creatures in the series, for the most part, felt too odd and monstrous to be considered the typical "magical creatures" we all know. For all the issues I had with Marvel's version, Juniper Lee's Loki didn't really look like a god. Not to mention the nonsensical revamp on Leprechauns the show gave us.
    2. As bad as the first nitpick was, my biggest issue with the series is the fact that Te Xuan Ze was forced to remain inside of Orchid Bay City; "by order of the Magical Elders." This idea not only made very little sense in the long run for me but in other shows involving fantasy creatures, the protagonist's duty was to protect the ENTIRE planet from unwanted harm from said creatures...not just their hometown.
Why in blue blazes would Juniper have to be forced into staying home forever when she could be of a greater service to magical beings worldwide?

It wasn't among my favourites, but it was always a fun show to catch when it was on when I was a kid. That 'shit is going down' beeping sound her braclet makes activated some neurons in my brain that were dormant for well over a decade.
I remember the episode where everyone is going to a field trip or something out of town and she can't join them because she can't leave the city due to her duties, like she physically can't leave and her being very sad about it, it genuinely made me feel sad as well and that didn't happen often with cartoons for me as a kid, so it definitely has a place in my heart and my childhood. Was nice to be reminded of it.

I think CN and other Networks should make TV/streaming movies (40-60 mins) for older shows like this. At best, the reception is great and you can reboot/continue the show. At worst, you expanded your library a bit and gave original fans closure. I think it would be low-ish risk for potentially high rewards!

Yes, I remember it. I was 9 years old when this show premiered, and I used to watch it all the time and just like American Dragon I was sad when it got canceled. The characters were likable, the world building was interesting, the action was great, and the humor was clever and at the center was this strong female character Juniper but I guess either Cartoon Network lost faith in it or people just weren't ready for shows with female leads. Either way, it's disappointing but it's a fun show regardless. Also fun trivia the music was composed by Genesis drummer Stewart Copeland who also did the PS1 Spyro games.

I loved Juniper Lee! She was fun, a great female lead, and her story had less social-drama than Jake Long had. I struggled watching Jake Long because of second-hand shame and stress, and Juniper Lee's lighter tone was way easier to enjoy. The color was amazing, I loved the story line, and while I realized I didn't catch many episodes, it was still something I found enjoyable. I think it'd be awesome if it was taken up again to wrap up the story line, if only for completion's sake, even as a comic rather than a full show. I don't understand why it was cut off either.

They're left to fade away into obscurity... The only substantial semblance of attention Juniper Lee got was being on the Boomerang app.
