My mom is Christian and observes Hanukkah because she loves Jewish people and they played a huge role in our religions culture (see all of Old Testament) :)
@@fzzypurpleturtle Is that cool, or is that cultural appropriation? I've read that some Jews kinda frown upon some churches who do Passover seders, so I wonder how they feel about Christians doing Hannukah. I am Anglican myself and I like the concept behind the mezuzah and I have considered putting a Christian one on my door BUT....if it's disrespectful to Jewish culture, I will not do it.
Kate Ross to get technical-my mom quietly observes it because some Christians believe that Jesus was “conceived” during Hanukkah because that’s the winter solstice and I believe Jesus was actually born in August or September. Also,God states in the Bible that Jews are the chosen people, so some Christians are fiercely protective of them. I’m highly aware of cultural appropriation but I don’t think that’s what she’s doing. She does it with reverence and respect and honor

I was blessed to have a good friend who is Jewish and she took me under her wing. She even gave me a copy of her grandmothers recipe for Latkes. I attended many Hanukkah and Passover celebrations at her house and just fell in love with the food. To this day, we not only celebrate holidays like Christmas and Easter but also Hanukkah and Passover. I figure, it couldn't hurt.
I like watching you cook. Plus, you use real ingredients that anyone can get at a grocery store, for cheap. I have always wanted to try making latkes; ever since I watched Gabe Kaplan talking about them on a Welcome Back Kotter episode! And I will try your recipe, but with real eggs. Happy Hanukkah!✡️🕎😜❤️🕊️
I've never tried the boxed version, now you made me want to go out and get it, more reasons to go food shopping which I love. I haven't made latkes in years, so I will give these a try. I'm of Italian heritage, so I may put some kind of grated cheese on top when they are almost done frying. Love your sense of humor, keep Youtubing! Is that a word?
Or white sweet potato for a savory version or sweet potato latkes would be amazing with applesauce. You might need to add either a little more egg or some flour to bind the sweet potato together. Look up recipes ;)

I was wandering through the store the other day and this exact latke mix was on sale, so I got a box. The texture isn't what my grandmother made, but the taste is pretty authentic.
One additional note: Though I'm not a vegan/vegetarian there are several other good reasons for using egg substitutes i.e. allergies, food born illnesses like salmonella and mess - no shells you have to dispose of or bacterial medium you have to clean up and unfortunately egg albumin is one of the worst (good if you want to culture certain types of bacteria - in the lab).
I'm a Latke girl, I love the avocado Latke Idea, I don't use a mix, but I do have a hint, I shred the potatoes , rinse in ice water and a a teaspoon of baking soda in the water to keep them from turning brown, I put 1/2 in blender with onions, and egg, blend well, put in a bowl, blend the other half with egg, onion, and 1/2 tea. baking powder, then add to the bowl, add 1/3 cup matzoh meal and mix well, get the pans on the stove with oil and start cooking!
Girl....you crack me up. I try Latkes before and there real good..I once attempt it and it came it out OK...😁...but, you gave me ideas in trying the avocado and the buffalo style. Thanks for sharing your cooking skill...
I love frying food, but hate the grease in the house. For most greasy items I cook outside. Using a spoon to scoop out an avocado. It just seems safer.
In Germany it's pretty common, too, called Reibekuchen. You can always get it on Christmas markets with apple sauce. I guess it's common all over central Europe, so not surprising the Ashkenasi community has their own spin and purpose for it!

Kate Ross and again, we share the Old Testament with them
This video was hysterical! :) Happy Hanukkah!
This was a delight to watch. We aren't Jewish (we're Mormon) but we love Hanukkah and share it and it's traditions with our kids and grand kids. Thanks for a fun latke tutorial!
Love your cooking shows.
"Why do I count out loud? Cuz I'll forget if I don't"
Just made my day, I'm an electromechanical engineer yet for simple task like that I'm the same way, some times I even use my fingers. I have two kids, so my brain gets foggy some times
That makes me feel so much better (about me - not an electromechanical engineer) that you use your fingers too!
I have never tried a Latke. I love your cooking video. More, please. Happy Hanukkah!
Yay hanukkah videos on TH-cam!!!!!!! Makes my morning so HAPPY!!!!😊🕎🔯
Exactly who is thumbing down your videos? That's ridiculous. What haters! While I'm not a fan of mayochup/thousand island dressing or melty cheese vegan or not, I do love avocado toast and buffalo anything and I'm not a millennial! Just glad that you also cook from the box. I was feeling guilty about using potato pancake and matzo ball mixed but now you made me feel better! Thanks Mayim!Happy Hanukkah!
I love your delivery, it’s fun to watch. I find it so interesting to learn about how to make different foods from different cultures and the more I learn the more I see things that are similar with other foods from other cultures.
Applesauce!!! I'm all about applesauce on my latke. But avocado toast latke does sound amazing
Potato pancakes with applesauce (Kartoffelpuffer mit Apfelmus) is a German food for the winter season.
I’m watching this in 2019. I love you Mayim and specifically looked up your vegan cookbook.
For the record Blossom was as popular in her day as Amy is now LOL
I'm just starting looking at new things in my Christ faith has this is the first year I won't be celebrating Christmas. You are so fun and hannakka is something I'm looking into doing in December. X
Ohmygosh, Mayin on my youtube is the most exciting thing I've found today...I love you!!!
You are so fun😂😂. Happy Hanukkah!
Omg I just love you! You are so entertaining besides being intelligent!
I've never tried the boxed version, now you made me want to go out and get it, more reasons to go food shopping which I love. I haven't made latkes in years, so I will give these a try. I'm all about easy, simple recipes, the simpler the better. If I see something too complicating looking, I think, Noope! and move the hell on. I'm of Italian heritage, so I may put some kind of grated cheese on top when they are almost done frying.
Love your sense of humor, keep Youtubing! Is that a word?
My Mom used to make those! I miss them they are so awesome!
“I tend to be a messy cook” relatable 😂 I can’t eat potato but these look yummy! What a fun video, happy Hanukkah 💕
You can make them with cauliflower, zucchini or another root vegetable. :)
Or white sweet potato for a savory version or sweet potato latkes would be amazing with applesauce. You might need to add either a little more egg or some flour to bind the sweet potato together. Look up recipes ;)
It probably has no real potato in that box!
Please do it from real potatoes, onion etc., I don't believe, that the food from the powder taste the same.
yeah my mom always made from scratch & after growing up with that, could never eat the powdered monstrosities...
It doesn't
Citygirl Lbrand I too feel this connection with the Jewish heritage and I don’t know if I am Jewish? I just posted a similar comment about my grandmother’s maiden name lol! My grandmother’s was Steinbrescher.
@@ThisIsYourOnlyWarning Today it s easy, You just should do a DNA test. It s realy interesting learn new things about Your family. But it s better, if the oldest family members do the test.
@@camillecali2 Hi! I'm curious whether you have retained some of your Catholic beliefs. It would be cool if the Judaic tradition was added on to your Catholic heritage rather than replacing it.
I'm a messy cook that is so relatable. Those Latkes look delicious 🧡
3mins
I was wandering through the store the other day and this exact latke mix was on sale, so I got a box. The texture isn't what my grandmother made, but the taste is pretty authentic.
This looks so good. I’m Jewish, my husband is not and has never had a latka. I will be trying these because I know he will love them!
In my case egg allergy..
This video is so relatable! Lol “hope the fire alarm doesn’t go off” 😂😂
Shalom Mayim,have a Happy Hanukkah,latkes are delicious
I havent seen your posts on any asmr videos in a while. I was worried about you glad your alive
I really appreciate the tip on using a smaller measuring cup! You crack me up and I LOVE latkes!!
Yes, more cooking episodes please!! I am non-denominational and I WANT some of those dang latkes!!! LOL
I love you, your so hilariously funny, keep them coming.
What a beautiful menorah! So pretty!
I thought the same. It's just gorgeous!
I think it's the Tree of Life menorah from Ten Thousand Villages
@@TheBlacktressDiaries Thank you! I'm going to have to pick one up!
I've had avocado on toast since I was a kid. The joys of having them indigenous here in South Africa. Happy Hanukkah.
Thank you Mayim for making some excellent recipes for us millennials! I cannot wait to try the avocado toast one.
I recommend using avocado oil
Tyler Thomas peanut oil
YES this would be so good!
Girl....you crack me up. I try Latkes before and there real good..I once attempt it and it came it out OK...😁...but, you gave me ideas in trying the avocado and the buffalo style. Thanks for sharing your cooking skill...
Please make more cooking videos this is so fun!!!!☺☺☺
I'm from Brazil and I love your job. Thanks to share with us!!
I love frying food, but hate the grease in the house. For most greasy items I cook outside.
Using a spoon to scoop out an avocado. It just seems safer.
I looooooooooooove when you do cooking videos😉👏💖😍
In Poland it's just an everyday dish called Placki ziemniaczane usually we eat it with either sugar on top or mushroom sauce
That sounds delicious. Shouldn't be hard to find here in New York. Mushroom sauce!
In Germany it's pretty common, too, called Reibekuchen. You can always get it on Christmas markets with apple sauce. I guess it's common all over central Europe, so not surprising the Ashkenasi community has their own spin and purpose for it!
@@alexk7973 Very interesting, thank you!
Happy Hanukkah Mayim ❤️🕎
You crack me up, I love the sass. I have to count out loud too! Very pretty spread 😊 Yay for veganizing traditional dishes!
I was inspired and tried it tonight. Never made them before. It was a success! Thank you, Mayim.
Thanks for the laughs! Great way to start the day. Thanks Mayim.
