I really like that Miz is very open to people trying things and using ingredients that are easier to find, plus explaining the history, it's just a good time. When you see someone billed as a comic you expect wackiness, which can translate to a giant mess (fun! just. a mess) and she's staying well on task while still being fun. And super genuine!
Also I'm really enjoying the puns.
Man, I came for Claire videos and Brad videos but now I am in a Carla spiral and I regret nothing. These two make a great duo, I need more!

Explanation for onions and freezing: In chemistry we have a concept called solubility of gases. The solubility of a gas increases when there is increase in pressure or decrease in temperature (cooler temps). Onions have sulphur in them, so when you cut them, the sulphur oxidises due to their contact in air and waft up to your eyes, where they come in contact with the water in your eyes and hydrolyse to make acids. These acids irritate your eyes due to which your body produces tears to wash it out.
When you cool the onions, the sulphur gas becomes more soluble in the onion and thus does not get oxidised as easily. Hence making you cry less

Sarah Michelle could you please explain stan? Thank you.
@Sarah Michelle I think it derives from the term stalker fan, but now it basically just means you like something a lot.
@@sinloi2675 It's from the Eminem song "Stan" about an obsessive fan named Stan. But the fact that it looks like a portmanteau of stalker+fan helped its popularity.

@Ausla Davis yeah if you live in the 1800s maybe. Fat fetishes are huge now, it's literally one of the most popular fetishes next to feet and leather.
@Ausla Davis Just because you're not attracted to people that are fat, doesn't mean that's a universal trait. Yeah, societal fat phobia exists, but individual people aren't always so shallow as to reject/judge potential partners purely for something as minute as their appearance. That kind of overgeneralization is nonsense, but perhaps to be expected coming from someone who complains about "snowflakes" in a youtube comments section about.. cooking lol.

These two are so fun together! Also, I think the editor of this video needs a shoutout, good job!
Yes Chef... you are correct, it is the sulfur in the onion that causes the reaction between the sulfur and the water in your eye... but freezing an onion reduces the volatility of these sulfur containing molecules, volatility is the ease at which a molecule can turn into a gas... lower volatility... less gas... less sulfur reaching your eye... less sting... hope that helps :)
Man like putting it under cold water helps also
Probably grates better frozen as well.
I keep mine in the fridge and then remember to keep my face from being directly above the onions. It works for me!

OMG... soooo fun! Love the chemistry!!!
Wow, I didn't know that they were part of jewish culture under the name of "Latkes" :D Here in Germany this recipe is eaten by everyone regardless of their religion, and it's seen as a traditional german dish, too. Here it's called "Reibekuchen", which literally means "grater cake" - a pancake which is produced by using only a grater (and the stuff to fry them, obviously :D). At this time of the year you can find delicious Latkes/Reibekuchen on every Christmas market and many similar occasions. We usually eat them with apple puree as a sauce and sometimes a warm soup as a side dish. Love to see that we actually share this simple yet awesome recipe with other cultural groups around the world - Latkes for everyone
SofaOger Ashkenazi Jews lived in Eastern and Central Europe therefore their culture has many points of contact with the ones of the countries they lived in. From the cooking (latkes are similar to Rösti) to the language. Yiddish itself it's the proof of this :)
This is cool! I noticed in a Christmas market that you can also eat them with Maggi sauce! I wish I tried them with applesauce
Apropos Yiddish noticed the (to) shpazier = spazieren which is just walk around in German
In Berlin we just call them Kartoffelpuffer 😁 you must be from Bavaria
Kartoffelpuffer (potato puffs?!) You can add a bit of nutmeg and chopped parsley to the batter. Tastes great. I always have them with apple sauce (Apfelbrei), husband with smoked salmon and horseradish and creme fraiche mixture. I like them also very crips on the outside and with small soft heart, not very soft and soggy.
I’m not really familiar with Jewish foods so much, so the applesauce with the fried potato dish seemed really crazy but you know what, it looks fabulous, and I would definitely try it in a heartbeat.
Trust me, its amazing!
the applesauce didnt seem too wierd for me, becuase here in Poalnd we have a very similar meal called 'placki ziemniaczane' (potato pancakes) and in my house they were always eaten with sour cream and sugar! so a fried potato-onion cake with sweet sauce seems perfectly normal to me haha
Latkes are delicious, absolute perfection on a plate with applesauce & sour cream.
Its super delicious! I highly reccomend it
Neph Drummond not jewish but i can attest that they’re really good i love latkes with apple sauce AND sour cream (bc everything is better with sour cream)

@Joe H I didn't say anything about anyone being scared
Are you assuming his sexuality?
@Joe H being homophobic doesn't mean you are scared of something it means you have an irrational misunderstanding of it.
@Joe H dude chill out homophobia has a clear definition colloquially, if we were to be held to ancient greek meanings everytime we used a word derived from way back then we would be using the word zone for belt (Zōnē means belt in greek), you are entitled to your own opinions but you don't have to belittle others to express them

Here in Poland we make a wariant of those, called "Placki Ziemniaczane"(Potato Pancakes), the biggest change is - we don't use baking powder. We also serve them with different sides - ketchup, sour cream, sugar or my favourite - "po węgiersku"(Hungarian style), sometimes called "Jadło Drwala"(The lumberjack's food), that means with "Goulash" poured on top(it's a type of Pork stew with mushrooms and other vegetables). Delicious!
Well yeah but placki are much flatter, though there are two schools - those who like em crispy like hash browns, and some more like these. We go a long way with jewish culture, so no wonder the kitchens, especially the simple delicious dishes, will be alike. God damn, I want some now.
