  • It was such a fantastic day being back on the Appalachian Trail doing an out and back hike from Newfound Gap to Clingmans Dome for 16 miles. I saw so many mushrooms 🍄 🍄 and even had some beautiful views at Clingmans Dome. The AT will always have a part of me and it was nice to get to spend a little time on this trail again. 🥾

    It was fantastic to see how lush the Forrest was! When I was thru-hike videos, most of the hikers are going through late winter or early spring when it is rather bare of foliage. Thank you!

    That was awesome! Almost felt like I was there. The mushrooms are popping since all this rain. I've been gathering and eating a few. The music you had in this video sounds like what I use to go to sleep at night. Really nice!

    I could tell in the first few frames you we’re going to enjoy yourself. Your beaming smile was a dead giveaway that you were at home on the AT. I Love the diversity of the fungi on the AT, (eastern states). I live in a dryer environment out west and forage for some mushrooms, Chanterelles and Morels. They are the prizes out here. It’d be fun hiking and mushrooming with an experienced guide out there. I’m sure that with the diversity the flavors would be all over the map!

    We hiked it last weekend (but as a shuttle hike and started at Clingman’s and man were we glad 🤪). What a magical section of trail. You captured all the gorgeous mushrooms! There is a benchmark at the top of Mt Collins (we were also checking off two peaks for the SB6K Challenge…there are 12 peaks over 6,000 ft that qualify for the challenge in the Smokies). As you were headed up to the top it would have been about 20 ft off to your left on a mossy boulder. Also a few yards up on your right was another cool marker, (very hard to spot) Meig’s Post….two iron cables in a rotted post on the ground there from 1800 that was the boundary dividing Cherokee Nation from the US. Such a gorgeous stretch of trail….and KUDOS for doing it both ways! 🙌🏻

    Man your making me want to be on trail really bad. There is something magical about the AT in the higher elevations that feels spiritual and old world. I love the smell of the trees it’s like walking through a Christmas tree forest . Hopefully I’ll see you in the smokies one day. My wife and I just missed you at Elkmont a few months ago. Another great video of the Smokies. Did you know a B-29 Superfortress crashed on June 12, 1946, just east of the observation tower at Clingman's Dome? All twelve crew members were killed. Maybe the next time you are up there, you could mention the crash to honor the servicemen who lost their life on Clingman's Dome. There are several articles on the internet about the crash. It was the same type plane that dropped the atomic bombs on Japan just a year earlier. We should never forget those who served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice for us. Thank you and I enjoy your videos!

      @@HikingwithBraids Yes, I wrote the Great Smoky Mountain National Park office about this crash and how many thousand people go to the observation tower each year and no one knows about the guys who died there. i asked them to please erect something there at the tower to remember the airmen and never forget that they gave their lives for our country. Of course, I never heard anything from them. But thank you for your reply and I know I will honor those guys if I'm in the area again. Take care and I love your videos. • @HikingwithBraids
      @HikingwithBraids  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think this trail should most likely still be good. We usually have mild Decembers but Tennessee weather is unpredictable. As long as there isn’t snow or high winds, newfound gap road and parking will be open. Check the NPS website for updates though.

      I wanted to drop a note and say thank you! Weird how this video pushed me to plan this trip. But with the concern of 441 closing, unpredictable weather and illness, I was making back-up plans.
