The real Maria who this happened to was disturbed how the media focused on the Westerners and tourists rather than the locals. She was very moved and appreciative of the Thai people who helped her like they did. Specifically in that scene when they clothed her and transported her to the hospital. She insisted that the producer have them portrayed in a kind and compassionate way.
Loved your reaction to this beautiful movie. You should check out "a monster calls", another great and emotional movie by Bayona
The focus on the white family/people bothers me, too, and certainly pulled me out of the story a bit. - Having said that, there's still a lot I love about this film, not just the disaster aspects and amazing sound design and acting, but the emphasis on people helping people and the genuine importance of doing this (which we don't often see a ton of in apocalyptic movies, only ever a tiny bit for which many are punished as in the Walking Dead). - It also helps my opinion of this movie to have learned more about the real family who this story was based on and their involvement in the film. - But yes, it was a South East Asian tsunami, and those were the people who didn't get to leave or go to a hospital in Singapore. Those were the vast, vast majority of people in need of rescue.
