You really had a good review and experience watching that movie. I was like you, and didn't know anything about the movie other than there was a severe tsunami back then and I remember the videos at the time. It is an amazing production and captivating movie with extremely powerful acting. I was blown away too. Suffered from extremely stuffed up nostrils.😢. How did you do it without tissues? Did you just edit that out?😅

The family this happened to was Spanish, and the movie was put out by the Spanish film industry. The crew were all Spanish and the director, but they wanted to grab a wider audience so they decided to make the movie in English and cast actors that spoke English. So the actual Spanish family picked the actors who were going to play them. In particular the mother picked Naomi Watts to play her. The idea was that this could be any European family that was on vacation in Thailand. Which is why they don't say where they are actually from in the movie.

In an interview with María, the mother, she said that when she was underwater she couldnt tell the difference between up and down and that when she was getting hit by all kind of things she wished her kids were already dead so they wouldn't have to go through all of that. And when she saw Lucas in the distance she thought she was dead cause she couldnt believe he was actually alive.

You’re not alone in your emotions. I was so emotionally drained after this movie. I couldn’t even imagine what the victims of this tsunami went thru.
The vomiting is debris and plant vines that forced its way into their stomachs by the force of the water. Karl, the man talking about his family being at the beach, is based on a man that helped the dad. The only thing known about him is that he lost two children that day.
Actor Richard Attenborough(John Hammond from Jurassic Park)’s daughter Jane, her mother-in-law, and her daughter Lucy died in the tsunami along with nearly a quarter of a million people. The title of this movie is pretty damn accurate to the insurmountable odds against this family surviving and finding each other.
The worst part is that most people don’t even die from the initial impact of the wave, but from the wave receding and sucking them out to sea. Second most from infected injuries. Tsunamis flood sewage and water drains, turning the water into a cesspool of disease and bacteria. It hurts to know so many people had to face the fear and despair of this event. I couldn’t imagine how that affected those that weren’t as lucky as this family.
I actually think that was coming from her lungs, she inhaled stuff under water, that's why she was struggling to breathe while it was happening. With coughing the lungs will try and expell anything foreign.

So, would the vines and debris scratch and cut the throat on the way up? Or are they like, purified? I'm not sure how that works and just asking a real question here

- As in the movie, the family was gathered around the pool when it happened. "We were standing in the same positions around the same swimming pool where the families were standing that day," MacGregor said in an interview in 2012. "It was really real."
- The Impossible would film in that same hospital. "They were very happy with the idea of the film being made because it was a way of showing the world how they had behaved, which was extraordinary," director Juan Antonio Bayona told Set Decor.
- The family that inspired The Impossible was involved in the movie from start to finish. The process began with Belón (the mother) recounting her story to filmmakers over the course of five hours-in one sitting. “When we first met, I had two objectives,” Belón told the L.A. Times in 2012. “One was trying to scare them and two was to look in their eyes and see if they were the ones who really wanted to swallow this big responsibility.”
- Each year, the family gathers on a beach on December 26, the day the tsunami struck, to remember. “No matter where we all are, this is a commitment we have forever. We need to be close to the souls [of the dead],"

Tom holland was amazing in this and it really shows how good of an actor he is beyond Spider-Man. Doing this at such a young age is remarkable

One of the things that is often overlooked about the entire disaster is how much the locals did to save as many people as possible. Their own homes had been destroyed, they'd lost loved ones, their communities had been wiped out, but they worked tirelessly to rescue as many people as possible, transported victims to hospitals in any way they could, welcomed people into their homes if they could. It's one of the things many of the survivors mention when interviewed, just how selfless the local people were and how much they did to save as many as possible.
Yes so much respect for them I remember reading that they somehow felt responcible for them and went hi great lengths to help to their own risk not knowing if another wave das coming. Many earned a living directly or indirectly through the tourists or just felt I think like having a guest in your home they felt responcible for their welfare. Even though they were poor and also lost everything they still felt great compassion to see the tourists suffer in their beautiful country.
The Thai People are truly amazing meeting my stepmoms family they treated me as family a complete stranger when I first met them.
Greetings from Thailand. I was there a few days after it happened when our government asked for volunteers. So many bodies to identify and there was not enough equipment. The body decomposed quickly due to the drowning. The disaster victim identification was very hard to work on but still, we did the best we could. Unidentified bodies still remain at memorials of disaster's forgotten victims. My heart goes out to all and express my heartfelt sympathy and condolences, to the victims of the tsunami.
You're a hero ! All these acts of kindness and generosity during the worst disasters show the beauty of humanity, thank you very much for the help you provided during this tragic event. I'm sure many people are grateful for what you have done, you and all the volunteers.

I don't think I've ever cried so consistently watching a film, and all of the actors did a phenomenal job
I was doing alright although watching in horror until Ewan McGregor's scene when he calls his in-laws. That absolutely broke me and I didn't recover for the rest of the movie.
I was the same and then I saw War Horse and I did not stop crying for the entire second half

@@marthapackard8649 I am so glad you mentioned THAT scene... that was the most intense portrayal of heartbreak I have ever seen an actor do in any movie, and it was utterly emotionally infectious.
That scene where lucas and the younger brothers reunited really made me bawl like damn. But watching your reaction made me a sympathetic crier from some of the scenes that didn't even made me cry when I was watching the movie for the first time 😭
I cried so much throughout this movie. But that scene had me nearly hyperventilating with the crying. And immediately after that, when they're reunited with their dad. The way Lucas, who had to be so strong for so long for his mom, could fall into his dad's arms and just be a kid. 😭😭😭
I felt the same. Watching him tear up at things that didn't do that to me made me wonder if I'm just a cold person 😅. But his reaction made me tear up.

This film broke me as well. They actually shot this on site, they set up a closed road and really flooded it. Watch the bts, it is amazing. I am still so proud of Tom, he was so young 😂.
I think we all cried knowing how many people died and were left to grieve after this immense tragedy. It didn't require much lead up to fully feel what they went through. It's one family, but I do think we all felt it for everyone. Fantastic film. I also recommend How I Live Now with Tom and Soirse.
People give Tom Holland so much shit like he can't act just because he plays Spider-Man, but his performance in this film is amazing even at such a young age.
Not to mention that he plays a great Spider man. I've never understood why so many people hate on him

it's odd cause Tom Holland has done theater even as a kid, so it's not like he only started acting from this. His whole life has been theater and dance.
He's Spider-Man for the simple reason that he knows how to act and he won the role among many young actors who were casting, now that he is a popular young actor he has made films like "The Devil All the Time" and "The Crowded Room "and in which he has proven to be a great actor. People nowadays only hate marvel because they have nothing better to do.

I have personally lived this nightmare when I was 5 I’m now 24! It happened in 2004 Indonesia .. my parents where born there (I was born in the Netherlands) but we we’re on a vacation just like the family in the movie! I still have scars and remaining damage to my back mostly and the visuals in my head! So my first time I watched this movie with my parents it was A lot I can say the least!

Just a little thing about it we were in the ocean on a boat behind the wave and got dragged onto land where I lost my eldest sister my aunt and 2 cousins during the tsunami! I got swept out of the boat by the second wave and was found 16 hours later and had been in a coma for 5 months! My parents where somewhat okay only bruised and cut by debris. And further I don’t remember much but when any of y’all have questions I will try to answer them as much as I can!

It wasn’t that he recognized his dad’s lower half it’s that he recognized his shorts. Earlier in the movie they commented about his shorts. So that’s how he knew it had to be his dad.
I’ll never forget watching this when it came out. I have never cried more. Then I remember Tom Holland was announced as Spiderman a couple years later and people were like who?? I was so happy he got the role.

You definitely need to react to Society of The Snow. It’s directed by J. A. Bayona, the same person who directed this movie. It covers the story about the Uruguayan Rugby team who’s plane crashed in the Andes mountains in the 70s. Even Tom Holland shouted out the movie. It’s in Spanish and highly recommend watching it like that with English subtitles for the best experience. 10/10 movie

I hadn’t thought about it but it’s true that a lot of disaster movies focus on how it can bring out the worst it people, but this movie does the opposite and it does it beautifully. It made me think about the time when a really bad earthquake hit my home city (Mexico City) and several other towns in Mexico. I wasn’t living there at the time and it was super overwhelming and anxiety inducing seeing it all from afar but it was also so nice seeing how everyone immediately just dropped everything and started helping. Everyone united with the same goal of helping with the damage, finding people, transportation, providing food and other goods, etc. This movie really does a great job of capturing how people can come together during a crisis like this

There's a reason why Naomu Watts was nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars the time this movie came out. This so far is her best performance, and I'm glad you got to share and experience this film
I rented this movie back in 2012 when my sons were just 13 & 11. And boy, did it affect all of us, but it really surprised me at how much it affected them. It was amazing to see both of their reactions. It’s like they looked up to Lucas (Tom Holland’s character) and both made some sort of promise to our family after that movie. “Don’t worry mama, if that ever happened to us, we would take care of you like Lucas took care of his mom. We won’t give up finding each other or lose hope.” Each of my sons had this mature thought process of needing to grow up and be a protector for their family. And just a few weeks ago we were hanging out and this movie was on cable while I flipped thru channels. Both my son’s reacted with a gasp. “Oh man! I haven’t seen this since it came out, since we saw it with you. Badass!” And I loved how much they admired the mom’s bravery. I’ll never forget watching this movie with them, it forever changed us.

Few movies elicit an involuntary "Oh no, Greg" when I see it pop up in my feed, but this one did. Not that this is a bad movie; on the contrary I've seen it many times and ugly cry every time. I think it's incredible. But I knew it was going to break Greg into little bitty pieces and I was not wrong.
The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami that largely hit Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand was one of the most devastating disaster i've ever seen. It's sad how it happened during the Christmas holidays and yet it's a miracle that the family in this movie as it also happened in real life were seperated during the Tsunami but managed to get out safely and reunited. They almost died but never give up in finding each other, bless them. Easily one of Naomi Watts' best performance 🙌
You're so real for the immediate tears in the eyes when the tsunami first starts. The first time I saw the movie, I kid you not, I cried at EVERY scene once the tsunami hit. Literally sobbed the whole runtime because of how devastating it is. It amazes me how ppl don't cry as soon as the tragedy starts! I guess we're just more emotional, but there's power in that. I love when reactors can be vulnerable and openly cry to movies.

I was backpacking in 2016 in New Zealand when a 7.8 mag earthquake hit, and the town I was staying in, Kaikoura, was the epicenter of the quake. It completely isolated the town, no way in or out, the roads were completely demolished, and the water had receded so far that boats could not reach the town. Around 5000 people were stranded in the town for around 5 days, until we began to get helicopter evacuated out.
Red cross was dropped Porta potties and fresh water in helicopters, the only wifi available for anyone to reach their families was at the local hospital, so it was total chaos. I remember looking around at collapsed buildings and helicopters in the sky, military, cars parked haphazardly in grass and in the road. It felt like an apocalyptic movie.
But the thing I will NEVER forget is the kindness of strangers during and after that event. Once we were evacuated out, we were put on a bus and taken to a lodge of sorts, we walked in and the entire community had come together to cook homemade food, bring in blankets, cots, sanitary products, etc. The kindness I experienced from strangers during that time was like nothing I had ever experienced before, and it will never leave my heart or mind. Humanity can be dark, but it's can be so so light and filled with love.
Another fact about the family, is that Lucas said the moments he lived when he was only 10 years old left a mark on him, because when he found himself lost with her injured mother, he had to take care of her and heal her serious wounds, until he was able to meet his father and brothers, and that, motivated him to become a doctor and help anyone who needed his help. He said "It was a unique and unfortunate experience. But since then it seemed logical to me to have to repay, to a certain extent, that debt that was left to me.”
Your reaction to this movie means a lot, it opens up the knowledge of this tragedy and how people can bring the best of themselves, to not only help their families, but others.

Rest in peace to the ca 226 000 people that died. Though the waves never reached so far, countries as far as the Nordic was impacted due to for example Thailand being a hotspot for Nordic vacationers. Sweden lost over 500 people, 120 of them children. My mom lost a close friend that was in Phuket that day. Its one of those events that will stay with me forever & I wasnt even there.
And Indonesia lost over 100,000 people. It's insane.

I can truly say, no movie has ever made me feel so much emotion. It is an amazing story and so well told. The actors all should have received awards for their performances. The only word I can use to describe this movie is gut-wrenching.
This was the first movie I’ve seen of Tom Holland back in 2012. When he got casted as Spider-Man for Civil War, I knew he would do well in the role mostly of how he played in this movie.
Ewan's breakdown on the phone is one of the best bits of acting I think i've ever seen and it devastated me. It's so real and painful. You really feel how overwhelmed he is. Just an outstanding performance.
I hope he reacts to "Society of the snow" also based on real events and from the same director as The Impossible (JA Bayona)
Most American disaster movies focus on human being turning into selfish shits when conronted with a disaster. This beautiful movie shows human beings reaching out and helping each other in adversity. My favorite scene is the guy handing his phone to McGregor and saying 'You can't leave it like that'.
It’s really hard to wrap your head around how many people died in this tsunami. 230,000 people. That’s just…an unbelievable number. It doesn’t feel real. Absolutely tragic.
i'm crying just from watching you crying!! this movie always hits my emotions. i always choke up and cry so hard every time i watch that scene where the boys are reunited. the kids did such a great performance, the way they screamed and ran, the way they cried and held each other...
I remember when I was in 5th grade and the news footage of the tsunami came out. My English teacher was watching it on her computer and she was absolutely heartbroken over what she had seen. I never understood it until I was older. This movie made it so real for everyone that wasn’t involved.
Its such a shame this phenomenal movie was overlooked by all the award shows. Its perfect in every aspect of filmmaking. I wish juan Antonio bayona directed more movies.
He directed this movie that recently came out on Netflix called Society of the Snow which is based on the Chilean Andes plane crash in the 70’s. An equally harrowing tale of survival.
The style in how the lead-up to the tsunami is shot reminds me of the lead-ups to the deaths in the better Final Destination movies. The tension is just so well done.
I love this movie. It never fails to leave me in tears. Naomi, Ewan, Tom, and the entire cast did an amazing job.
I saw this movie before Tom became Spiderman. I remember thinking this young man is going to be amazing! After hearing about him getting the part of Peter Parker, I looked up his name and saw The Impossible. I thought...I knew it! He was absolutely awesome in this. You should watch the Behind-the-Scenes of how they did the actual tsunami part...incredible. The part where I totally lose my shit is when the younger brothers see/hear him and start calling his name while running to him. The look on the youngest ones face is so intense. Then, their dad walks through the crowd...I can barely see the screen at that point. Such a powerful movie!

Hey, Greg!! I really recommend you watch "Society of the snow". It's also a Bayona movie and it's INCREDIBLE, as good as "The impossible" or even better I could say.
I am from Thailand, the lantern is the idea that you release negative energy, left bad things behind and let it float away just like lantern floating up the sky, we also do that with Loy kratong festival, usually its on Thai Northern new year but nowadays tourists just want to experience that anytime, its like a tourists attraction now. I also want to mention that lanterns can be troubles cz when it comes down and still burning it could burn properties which happened every year.
Knowing how hard I cried for this movie and how much drama was still to come, when the emotions started hitting Greg and we were only 8 minutes in...I knew this one was going to be real rough. Hugs Greg! 🫂

Thanks for the reminder of never to watch this with headphones. The scene when the tsunami hits still freaks me out. If you watch the behind the scenes, a lot of it is practical. And the whole time, you know this family and so many others actually had to endure this, which makes it even more painful to watch. Lucas's so terrified when he's in the water with his mom, has to grow up and take charge so quickly once he realizes she's injured. The way he breaks down when they're all finally reunited is so heart wrenching 😭😭

Tom Holland's performance in this movie convinced me he would be a great spiderman/Peter Parker.

I recommend another movie directed by J.Bayona, the same director of "The impossible", called "Society of the snow", it is about the tragedy of the Andes, a real story.
I was not expecting this reaction to ever pop up on my feed but I just KNEW you were in for a treat (and a bawl). I think the biggest surprise is that you didn't realise this was set on Christmas either, I'm super surprised you didn't know much about the real Tsunami, it was such a covered disaster that even I remember being addressed back in 2004. When I watched this movie, I never once realised that the boy playing Lucas was Tom Holland, but I did remember in my first watch going "wow, this kid is an AMAZING child actor" guess I know why now XD
Ewan is my fav actor and his scene crying on the phone is the hardest thing to watch. Especially as a father.
Side note my sons middle name is Ewan after Obi wan himself
If you liked this movie you should definitely watch Society of the snow, it’s the same director. It’s the best movie I’ve ever seen and also like this one based of a true story.

I was in Thailand in 2009 so it was a few years after this tsunami. There we met a shop owner that had survived the tsunami. He showed us a scar he had and it was a huge scare that stretched all the way across his chest and abdomen. He told us about that day and how he was working, like any other day, in his shop that he had by the beach. When the wave hit he was still inside the shop and he described it like being stuck in a washing machine... I can't even begin to imagine what it felt like experiencing this! The trauma it would leave...
My old neighbor was in Thailand during this time but for some reason they decided to leave one day early. They heard about the tsunami while on the plane... They had a guardian angel watching over them cause if they had left when they first intended to they would have been there when the tsunami hit.

It was a horrible thing :/ This movie made me cry my eyes out. Tom was spectacular (the end when he screams for his brothers? SO GOOD! Made me cry like a baby)

The old lady talking about stars is Geraldine Chaplin, Charles Chaplin's daughter, she has worked a lot in some Spanish movies. I watched that movie in theatres...the tsunami scene...geez!!! The director was born like one hour from where I live, you should watch A monster calls or The orphanage, a horror movie produced by Guillermo del Toro and also with Geraldine Chaplin.
She is such a wonderful actress. ❤

This movie is intense. Crazy to know that Tom Holland was only 14 years old when he starred in this movie and he turned 16 by the time it hit theaters. Holland also spent six weeks in a water tank filming the tsunami sequence. Just crazy to think about that.
As soon as I saw this in my notifications, I thought "Ohh he's going to be an emotional wreck." 'Harrowing' is absolutely the right word for this film.
Wife and I watched this recently and never even heard of it....I was honestly so impressed with Tom Holland. Never expected to see how good he was already. The movie was really emotional and not what I expected at all. Such an amazingly picked cast.
I knew Tom Holland first from this movie before Spiderman and thought he was amazing! Was super excited when he got cast as Peter Parker!
We were in Ko Phi Phi island when this happened. I am always thankful to the guy who saved me from the water.. It was a horrible experience and we lost 2 of our friends that day. If this movie is based on a real family, I am happy that they are all alive..

Amazing film. I remember watching the coverage nonstop on the news when it happened. I lived in SE Asia as an expat kid, so was very familiar with the area that got hit and seeing the film just hit emotionally so hard. There are a couple other films on the events, but this is the best made one I think. So glad you guys have it a spotlight. The Daniel storyline was also one of the most miraculous events reported. I feel so much for the locals... they gave it their all to help everyone, and in lots of cases they were left behind. One of the other films touches on how developers tried to take their land in the aftermath.
In the scene where they were coughing up blood. Naomi’s character probably swallowed a lot of water in the tsunami. She probably also swallowed debri which is what she was pulling out of her mouth.

I watched this movie for the first time a couple years ago. I put it on just to have something on in the background while I did some cleaning but as soon as it started, I couldn't focus on anything else. I just sat there and bawled the entire movie thinking about how there are people who have gone through this. I don't think I've ever felt more emotionally drained after a movie.
A friend of mine from high school was visiting her family in Sri Lanka after graduating college before she started her Master's program and was with her mother on a train when the tsunami hit. Her mom pushed her out of a train window before the second wave hit and she (my friend) was able to get out, then helped to safety before the third wave hit. I remember watching the news and then there she (my friend) was, completely shell shocked being interviewed (literally title carded as "American Survivor") and recounting that the last she saw of her mom was the look of relief on her face that she got her daughter out of the train, even though she knew she didn't have enough time herself to get out and the disbelief of seeing her mom there in one moment and then completely gone the next as the water completely submerged the train, derailing it and sending it off. This movie really hits those emotional notes of caring for others and everyone did an amazing job of capturing exactly that dazed, shocked expression my friend had on her face. The sound design made for such a heightened anxiety because logically, you know what's about to happen, but then when it does, you're still not prepared for it. I cannot imagine experiencing any of this and this movie had me constantly in tears.
My now wife was in that exact place the day before. She went to the other side of the island for a moon party THAT day. The devastation was immense. I’ve been there since and there are still military boats in the middle of the jungle. It’s pretty horrifying.
There’s this TH-cam series called tsunami caught on camera and it’s all footage of different people from this day all over Indonesia. I have massive stage fright and did a report on this in college. I was the only person to volunteer to present and used a lot of footage from that series. To this day is the only project I am still proud of. I highly recommend checking out the series
Starting with their mundane fears on the plane is a great choice. Then they are shown how much none of that actually matters when faced with true fear. Excellent movie

It’s never too much. It’s the reality of disasters. True reality. Everything from the beautiful to the ugly. I share and watch this movie with everyone who has never seen it. And nobody has ever not stopped crying and feel so much when they watch it. It just shows how powerful, true stories and events can be.❤
This is imo one of the best true story films out there! I’m sure you have a long list of things to react to but I’d also highly recommend watching Lion (2016), Green Book (2018), and Testament of Youth (2014) all of which are fantastic based on true story films 👍🏻 I love watching your reactions from here in the UK 🇬🇧

As someone who has gone through multiple surgeries : certain surgeries, when I went under the anesthesia, this was the exact feeling. It isn't always that way. I have 3 surgeries where I went under feeling exactly like that, and apparently it has to do with how safe & comfortable you felt going into the surgery. I only had 1 surgery when I felt in more control because the doctor/surgeon explained, showed me what he was doing, how, etc.
This movie is how I knew Tom Holland’s casting as Spider Man would be perfect. He was such a standout in an already phenomenal cast and he was so young and brilliant

J.A. Bayona directed this. AND he also directed the new survival movie The Society of the Snow, about a rugby team that crashes into snowy mountains and their fight for survival. It's. So. Good. P.S. Hollywood did a version before called Alive. That wasn't approved by the survivors. This one totally was.
Such an underrated element of these reaction videos is that they give u the gift of experiencing amazing films for the first time ALL OVER AGAIN. Reminds me of why I love showing people movies. Thank you guys❤
When I first watched this movie, and there after, I always cry. It is emotionally draining. Naomi Watts was nominated for an Oscar and I was very upset that Tom Holland wasn't. This was my first movie seeing him in and I knew this young actor was going places. He literally carried this movie. Ewan McGregor on the phone pushed me over the edge. This movie really did pull on the heart strings and worked on the theme of "Hope". A lot of the background actors were actual survivors of this tsunami. I've watched this multiple times. It is amazing.

I love Greg doesn’t hide his emotions and cries. I’m a OIF vet man and I cry when sad stuff happens in film and real life. People that keep it in end up blowing up in a big way down the road. Don’t do that people and let it out. Also, imagine swimming through all that. I’m a good swimmer and I don’t know if I could make it.
I remember waking up to this on the news while living in Antigua, a Caribbean island, so it was quite surreal and heart wrenching watching this all play out a day after Christmas. I've experienced hurricane's and floods (a scary situation while living on an island), but nothing to the scale and magnitude of that particular tsunami. This movie evokes so many emotions (the tears were flowing) and really captures the power and devastation of nature. Superb film.
