    Great demonstration and explanation of how each control actually works.
    I bought one and compared to my prev gate (Fortin Zuul) this is a massive improvement, particularly as I don't have major noise issues and this enables me to set it up perfectly so it retains all the dynamics and sustain of my playing but still gates perfectly when I need it to do so.
    I'm running it 4 cable method.
    Also I am not noticing any signal degradation at all between on and bypassed so I tend to keep it always on.

    I use a noise gate that's built into my marshall amp. I use it for string scratching like you did. I thought that was cheating 😆 🤣 😂. I also use it to get rid of harmonics when i changes power chords when the gain is high on my amp, it works, that's probably cheating though 😆 🤣. Great video by the way.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!! Hey, a noise gate is there to (hopefully) clean up what you want it to. I wouldn't call it cheating. Players put dampening bands on the nut of their guitar, use gates, whatever they can to clean it up. It's not like a noise gate is ripping a solo for you :)

    • @johanarens9798
      @johanarens9798 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've just tried the 4 cables setup and compared it with the inline setup, this is interesting, if you are inserting some pedals in the equation, the noise is blocked all over the place. Another side note, this is not easy to adjust the threshold when using distortion/fuzz pedals, with my big muff, the noise is strong so the threshold needs to be very high. Lesson learn, each time you change something, insert something new, you would need to adjust parameters.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Johan! It didn’t even occur to me someone would try this with a different pedal. Kudos to you for testing. And I agree with what you are saying. Many want to turn on a gate and forget it. But like other effects, it’s best to optimize it for different situations. Very valid observation.

      @@LonelyRocker when I see demos like that, off course I want to try it out with whatever I would have under my pawns, I got that one for reamping with distortion/fuzz pedals, to keep noise under control. 01:42 Because Metal has just MORE noise. Every turn of the gain-knob on that modern amp (with 3+ gainstages in the pre-amp), raising the volume higher and higher, every added OD/boost in front, the high-output-pickups...
    So if a good gate kills the noise on a monster-setup like that, it'll be good enough for single-coils or P90s. So those reviews _are_ valid for that Jazz-player (:

    I’ve got a horrible EMF issue caused by a well pump in my studio.
    I haven’t found anything to fix it except shut well off when recording guitars.
    I even tried the EHX hum debugger, didn’t even make a dent in it.
    It’s a real hassle as I run 30-40 hours a week in the studio., so keeping the water off all the time is not an option for the rest of the family.
    The only fix I’ve found in post is to use Audacity to scrub the squeal out but it leaves artifacts.
    I’m thinking it was a fly by night install of the well pump/controller and the motor has a bad starter cap on it. But the well has a pump controller on it I’ve never seen before. It’s a “smart” controller and it could be the root of the problem.
    I’m not sure I inherited the issue with the property.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.😎

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow...that is certainly a unique challenge. Sounds like you need to throw a few things at this problem and it will involve an electrician. You clearly need to find a way to isolate the power. It MAY not be so expensive but I think you'll continually get frustrated if you keep guessing. I'd get a consultation form an electrician at the very least just to see if there is a viable solution before you spend money on gear...Let me know how this plays out!!

      @@LonelyRocker sadly I’ve already turned them stones over, extra grounding, shielding power to controller all the usual fixes nothing has worked.
      It appears anything shy of a new pump and module probably isn’t going to fix issue. That’s why I was looking at various noise filters.
      To pull the pump and replace the module probably run me $3-5k easy.
      If anyone has any ideas I’m all ears.
      Thx

    Where would the g8 go in the chain …if I’m running 4CM fractal fm3 with my jpc2c

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I get asked this a lot. It really is something you have to experiment with to see where it feels the most natural. Remember, if there is anything noisy after the pedal it won't be affected by it. With a Fractal, you could put it in a loop and place it in your preset before the amp block....that would be worth trying....

    I’m wondering what order it should be placed if you run it through the front with the tube screamer also if you run in the back and you got a couple EQ pedals how you should run it.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's hard to answer here but you can use any of the methods I demonstrated and insert it into different places to see where it sounds best. Any noisy pedals that come after the gate may still be noisy so best to experiment. If it sounds good it sounds good! :)

  • @ssmetalrulz

    Hey dude ! I am also using the G8. However I am just unable to get rid of a little crackling noise that lingers for a tiny bit even after my actual note completely fades out - no matter what combination I set the three dials on. The only solution I found is to keep the threshold so low that it pretty much becomes unplayable at that point since the gate just chokes every note..
    I have it set up in a 4 cable method. Guitar with Lundgren M7 passive pickups into G8. G8 send going into Overdrive pedal - Distortion pedal - EQ pedal then back into G8 return.. finally G8 output going into Two Notes CAB M and then audio interface. I'm even using the MXR Isobrick power supply for all my pedals.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated !
    Edit: Just for more clarification here's an example - If I play a single heavy downpicked palm mute, the hum of that palm mute gradually turns into a crackle before the noise gate makes it fade out. Hope that makes sense.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That sounds like a completely different issue. A gate will mask noise in between playing. It won’t clean noise while you’re playing. You may want to check possible issues with the amp itself. Move it to different places. Is it still making the same noise? Try changing patch cables. Sometimes it could be as simple as that. So hard to diagnose from here. But you likely have some issue there that needs addressing. Hope you find it!!

    • @ssmetalrulz
      @ssmetalrulz 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LonelyRocker Appreciate the help ! I'm not using an actual amp. It's an all pedal setup (using a pre-amp/distortion pedal for my high gain tones) and then using the Two Notes CAB-M for power amp and cabinet simulation. Hopefully I'll find the issue.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh. You shouldn’t have that kind of noise with such a simple setup. You probably don’t even need the gate. Definitely something going on with one of the connections Might be something so simple.

    Hi. Just watched your video on the G8. Very informative. I have a question about the 4 cable method when using multiple pedals. Should the G8 go before or after drive pedals in front of the amp and then in the FX loop,send, should the G8 come before or after delay or reverb pedals? My guess for that would be FX send to the G8 and then out to the delay and reverb pedal and then into the return?

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad you liked it. I think when it comes to drive pedals it probably doesn’t matter. You can experiment before and after to see what feels the most natural to you. I would definitely NOT put it after your delays and reverbs. That will mess with the tails on your effects.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! That's a great question. I think you need to experiment. My gut tells me right before the amp as I wouldn't want the distortion pedal going through the loop. This way, noise is addressed first and the signal hits the pedal right before the amp. Let me know how that sounds!

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My pleasure. I haven't tested this but in this setup the main output of the pedal goes directly into the loop with the send hitting the face of the amp. There will be signal but I don't know how the output of the send compares to the main output. If I were to guess there would be compromise in tone as the full signal is not complete. I'll give this a try next time I hook up the pedal...

  • @GanthardBlack

    So where do you put boost OD pedals and time effects in the 4 cable set up

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't cover this setup because there are so many variables. But 100% with time based effects you want to place them after the gate and if you can, as the last effects as they enter the effects loop of the amp so they don't trigger the G8. The OD pedal: depends if it has noise or not. You could try it first in the chain before it enters the G8. Or let your guitar enter the G8 clean and have the OD right after. You need to experiment here to see what works best for you. Let me know what you discover.

    I'm a bit confused by the 4 cable method. Does this mean all my time based effect current in my loop will now hit the front of the amp?
    Wouldn't it make more sense to have the guitar g8 output go to front of amp, then put the g8's receive / send in the effect loop?

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The beauty of the different methods is you can choose the one that suits your needs best. You could try putting the g8 in line with the effects going into your effects loop. If that becomes confusing and problematic just place it out front of the amp. Ultimately it depends where you need to fight the noise but adjust this to your setup...Hope tat helps!

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a great question. The best way to answer this is to experiment. Remember the gate closes when it detects a drop in signal so the closet you can get to the source while still clamping down on other devices that may be causing noise is the sweet spot. Every signal chain is different so you need to play with it.

    • @LonelyRocker

      It can get complicated when you are utilizing your pedalboard when some pedals are better going through the loop and some, like overdrive and boost pedals, are better off going through the face of the amp. Definitely early in the chain unless you want the gate to clean any noisy pedals. But definitely before your signal hits any modulation or reverb effects.
