Very good demo. I used a Boss Noise Gate for many years, I noticed that Yngwie was using one so I basically did what he did. After a while I found it was negatively affecting my tone, so I went with the ISP Decimator. But this one looks like it is worth further investigation. I also tried a very expensive Zuul pedal, but found that it was actually making noise rather than reducing noise!
Excellent tutorial. I bought one of these a few weeks ago after watching your video. I've utilized the 4 wire method on my pedalboard as the Synergy SYN 2 hasn't got any form of noise gate. One of the modules I use for high gain was very noisy, with this inserted into the send and return and my guitar going through the NS1-X has eliminated the noise completely without sacrificing any volume or tone. Thanks again for a very informative video. Mick 😊
Hi Leon. Excellent channel. I've been using the NS-1X for sometime now. I have it on my pedalboard and I use the 4 Cable Method. For small venues, I use the Synergy SYN 2 preamp and Synergy 50/50 setup. In the SYN 2 preamp I have the Engl Powerball II module and a Bogner Ubershall 2 module. The Bogner is set for the High Gain, mainly for solos. I noticed at a recent gig when the NS-1X was engaged, there was some reduction in the tone mainly the top end and some of the middle frequencies. Have any of your other subscribers that own the NS-1X noticed this. It's not a major problem in a live situation. But could be a problem if using it in a recording setup. On the bigger venues I use an Engl rig which comprises of an E570 preamp, E840 power amp and two Engl 2x12 cabs. The E570 preamp has a built in noise gate which is switchable. I've never notice any reduction in the tone. So is this reduction only apparent in the noise gate pedals? If you get a chance and can borrow the Engl E570 preamp, try it out, perhaps do a review. It would be nice to hear your impressions on it. Cheers mate. Mick 😍
Excellent tutorial and demo sir.. I've not had the pedal format I don't believe, but I've had it with multi effects.. I always used it by turning it up until it killed the hiss and noise but not cutoff my lead bends, etc.. One reason I love EMG's and active pickups is that they don't have the annoying noise floor.. Plus, you don't have to turn up the gain on your amp so much which also reduces noise. Great demo brother.. Always good stuff here.. Be well and have a great rest of the week.. I'm off to work.. I was supposed to be off, but the owner has to see the doctor and asked if I would work and I had to say yes.. They are such nice people.. Take care kind sir.. Tim
9:09 This is so important! ..We live in a time whereby ppl want settings, downloads etc coz they don’t have knowledge - videos like this give us knowledge but just settings & downloads keeps us monkey ooo ooo aaa aaa. Cool video man, great insight! Hope you’re well
I’m actually thinking of getting this to pair with an older 80’s Ibanez rack delay that suffers from massive ground hum. I replaced the two prong cord with a grounded three prong power cord but it still suffers from ground noise/hum. I use older racks with my Tascam Model 24 in the effect send/return and feel they would benefit from having this clean up their signal.
Great review Leon1 A great natural sounding noise gate can make our life easy! Boss seems to nail it once again! I only have to pedals with a noise gate built in. The Wampler Gearbox and the Strymon Riverside. Both are awesome drives and they have a fantastic natural noise gate feature incorporated. Thanks for the video man!
Oh that's a sexy looking new Boss pedal....noise gates are in the same category as EQ pedals (in my head) you gotta have both in your arsenal (essential sculpting tool).😂
Oh cool ! Was just looking for a new noise gate… been using a cheapo off Amazon that’s just OK. Will definitely need to get one of these ! Thanks Leon 🤘
i guess i put my tuner first in line out of the send ... that's the best way i can figure. the site says something about the output of "optimized tone" ... *i want to hear an out of phase coil split through it*
Hey Leon... Good day to you sir!!!!! What noise gate do you actually use on your board and do you use any kind of buffer pedal like the mesa boogie high wire dual buffer ---Why or why not?
I was looking into this for the SY1000 Leon, as you know you have a NS for each E Gtr, but only one in the FX blocks, OK I am using clean, rolled off Jazz tones, but thought I could run another NS through the send and return and then place it where I like with Synths etc. That diagram is really awesome by the way! 🤣👍🤘
A great review, thanks a ton! A question for anyone who has experience with this pedal: Would it be well utilized in a bass rig? Or should I go for something more simple? Currently running some decently heavy distortion with an A/O Ultra if that helps
Did not think they were still doing the X series pedals 😮 I love the CP-1X and since a gate is just a compressor turned upside down, this probably works great as well
what about the delay in the effects...does it let the delay lets say 3 repeats finish after you quit playing fade out naturally then slowly close the gate softly and naturally and not abruptly cut off the repeats before they fade out. the Rocktron hush IIcx does it brilliantly.
Great review Leon! I recently purchased several Sire L7H guitars; I ordered the NS-1X in the hope that it will clean up the P-90 pickup noise. I love the clarity of P-90s but cannot stand the buzzy noise that they produce. What are your thoughts on power conditioners? I am looking at several line conditioners made by Furman; any suggestions? Cheers!
Great as always video brother. Quick question, I wanna run this through a Gigrig G3 in the front and the loop. Would you put it first (loop order) in both front and loop? Cheers man
I'd set it up so that it places drives/eq's/comps in it's internal loop, but with any delay/reverb after it. You won't be cutting off delay and reverb trails that way.
I am messing a lot with my volume pot on the guitar to get clean tones. Does it still work this way or is the guitar off when turning the pot a little to may be 7 Thanks from germany Matz
I remember when Boss found out people were using the NS-2 in an X pattern, they were no that’s not how to use it, then Boss tried it and said wow it does work better that way, and we didn’t even design it for that. 😂👍
As usual, another excellent, informative video which I will need to rewatch. The whole Boss X series seems like the digital version of the Waza series to me, which means Boss could really pull something out of the hat re modulation, verb, delay or any combo o that. Seems like they now want to expand on the series which is great. I have the OD-1X (check Jake Cloudchair’s demo) and the CP-1X, both have helped reduce my analog snobbery no end. Hope you’re doing well Leon…seems like you’ve had a rough couple of years in some respects. 👍
@@LeonToddMe too. And I was wondering if they might do an updated Terra Echo which uses the same tech IIRC. I don’t have one of those, but a lot of people love that pedal and some the demos are pretty fun. I’m BT on TGP btw.
Love the points raised and there's, as usual, lots to think about. I have a real love, hate, hate some more relationship with these things. How about the volume swell problems, or sustained notes all of a sudden rapidly and unnaturally conking out?. My real thing is with the unnatural volume swell...any thoughts there would be much appreciated.
A new Boss noise supressor? Noooooooooo! I bought my NS2 about 15 years ago, set it up and I've never touched it since ha. Won't leave home without it.
@@LeonTodd Yeah, not sure about the new one with the annoying lights on it. The NS2 would still do fine. Threshold off, gate at 4pm. Never need to touch it heh!
Awesome demonstration, thank you, Leon! I am curious regarding your experience with this in general. If you don't really use many pedals before the amp and the real source of the noise is the high gain amp channel, is it best to have the noise gate in the effects loop? Or does that cause problems?
@@LeonTodd Thank you! I was paying attention to the awesome diagram, but I still got a bit lost with it because I wouldn't expect a two-input two-output approach on a gate. I was a bit shocked because I think of that kind of pedal being for parallel effects instead of a series unit.
I'm using a fuzz face at the beginning of my pedalboard (due to its hatred of buffers). Would this still work when placed after the FF with other noisy pedals in the loop?
I'm thinking of buying a Noise suppressor/gate pedal for the 4 cable method. Which one should I choose between the ISP Decimator II G-String and the Boss NS-1X? Do y'all think the new boss is better than the ISP Decimator II G-String? The Boss is digital but is the ISP analog?
Have not tried the NS1X, but I have experience with the Zuul, Rocktron Hush, Boss NS2 and can 100% vouch for the ISP G String Decimator G String II. I was for nearly 7 years or even longer on the quest for the ultimate noise surpressor. What I value is long sustain, super quick attack, natural "sound" (super important when playing stops on thrash metal). I always was shy spending the money on the ISP. Someday I was so frustrated I gave in, and the moment I plugged it in and tried it, I knew may journey was over. PERFECT IN ALL ASPECTS. Got the Decimator G String II since like 2 years or so, and every single time I turn it on I am a happy man.
If you can fix it at the source you'll have more luck, but if you like the way your pickups sound and don't want to change that then a noise gate will probably work alright
It would be great to hear noise gate/reduction pedals with less staccato material, for wider use cases. Folks using these pedals for rock, country or any other use cases are completely unrepresented in these pedal demos.
@5:10 Your tones always sound a bit thin. It's like you've got loads of slushy wet gain which is great but it sounds like the volume knob on the guitar is dialled way back. There's no meat to the tone, it's like it's being sliced by the volume knob. It's the fractal isn't it? I'd boost that bass man. Also, do you think that fractals compliment the guitar player in an artificial way? Where as traditional valve amps, you're on your own? I think they do ya know!
What other classic BOSS pedal deserves an update like this?
line selector ls-2. I have one. you create routes, split signal, use as booster before or after drive
VB-2X or VB-3
Also, the Boss Digital Metalizer is perfect for the X series.
Perhaps the Hi-Band Flanger?

If you are not using all four input-outputs you are doing it wrong, listen to this man he has it RIGHT!!
Similar Technology to the noise suppression system in the Boss EVH Delay. Making that delay an even more economically priced unit!!
