Being born in 1974, I wouldn't trade my youth experiences with anyone. From playing with my Tonka Vehicles, playing army in the woods, and creek, to scavenging in the junkyards/dump... That was the life.
I definitely fell into your 80s definition of nerd because I read every book I was assigned (and many more for fun), loved the library, and found the Dewey Decimal system very helpful.
1984, definitely. I'll take growing up with crummy video games, bad fashion and having to trek to the library every month over just staring into my cell phone all day. At least we got some exercise and had imagination back then.
We'd play Nintendo in the basement for a few hours, then get bored of that and go play with GI Joes at the creek, then get bored of that and run around playing "knights" whacking each other with sticks. Typical Saturday or summer day in the mid-80s.
As a 52 year old man that still holds on to 70’s 80’s culture that is now a father of a 27 and 21 year old-this video is so entertaining because it’s ALL true!
Walking down the toy isle today is sad, I remember going to fisher big wheel after I collected from my paper route and ended up buying everything because I couldn't choose. We had to be in when street lights came on. My kids are now having kids and I married a 28 year old woman and have a 2 year old son and I can't imagine him running the streets today the way we did and my older kids did. Some where along the way I got scared. Cell phones are a really bad addiction my wife's terrible about her phone.
Things from Gen X that make Gen Z say "Hmmmm?". Be kind please rewind Rewinding your music, with a #2 pencil. Eating suger laced A.D.D, hyper activity inducing, artificially colored, pressed toasted corn made by dog food companies. (Part of this complete breakfast). Yo Freaking Joe!
My dad was Polish and as a kid I read so many Polish joke books and would tell them all of the time. Never smoked but I agree about vaping looking goofy. Can't remember the last time I saw kids playing kickball in the street or running around playing tag. Video games are definitely better now. We also had real Coca Cola with cane sugar. Pop Tarts flavors weren't as ridiculous. Now the threat of nuclear war was kind of more on our minds in the 80s.
You kinda blew my mind when you said "We had NEW movies!" at 1st i didn't get it, i never thought of that! The only things thats better now, that it would've been cool to have back in the day, is some sort of internet, HD TV and the save mode on consoles
GenX here and we both didn't care and had no fear regarding trash talking to someone, especially in arcades where we'd be trash talking someone 2-3X our size and age as they're standing next to us playing the game as our opponent. As for politically correctness today compared to how things were in the 80s, honestly people in the 80s especially GenXers as kids, we were much more diverse naturally. We were much more open minded regarding others, we didn't care what you looked like but more how you were as a person. With many kids today the diversity seems to be forced on to them and has become more discriminatory because of this. As a kid my family had 2 separate volumes of Encyclopedias, one was from the 80s the other however was from 1911 and I'd use both of those for some of my reports along with at times an Atlas my family had. Honestly growing up as a kid in the 80s is definitely not something I'd trade for anything compared with growing up as a kid now, the freedom and experiences from back then definitely were a huge part of who I am today.
In the 80s if you wanted to have a private telephone conversation you had to take the phone with the really long cord and sit in the closet. At least until your dad yelled because he tripped over the cord that was stretched down the hallway.
like going to the doctor, he would tell you what kind of diet to eat ,how many hours of sunlight, how much rest of course with a cigarette hanging on the side of his mouth.
Going to have to 50% agree cause out of my 4 girls half play with toys and the other half are on I pads. lol but they are 4 and 3 plus twins 2 and I have a whole basement flood full of all sorts of toys for them
Us 70s and 80s kids played with toys and are better for it. My imagination was formed around sci-fi and military toys. I was interested in computers and video hames, but the tractor beam had me, pulled me back to toys.
IDK, I think Gen X is one of the most marketed to (aka brainwashed) generations, which is why companies like Hasbro are still selling us toys. And it was easy for them since a lot of us had parents who were either both working or were divorced.
The problem is the parents. The parents today are the children of the last generation of parents, my generation. So let me tell you what I have learned about my parents. They actually hated children. They didn't want to raise kids; they wanted to have kids as though they were toys and expected the kids to raise themselves. All the things that their parents did for them they didn't do for their kids, but it wasn't for the sake of the children. All those normal things I didn't have on old sitcoms weren't provided because "it would be easier for my parents." Their own words. Chores in exchange for allowance? No. They'd have to make sure my thug brother didn't steal it and they'd have to put a very tiny amount of money aside each week based on whether I did my chores. Worse than that, they would have had to teach me to do the chores and make sure I knew how to do them right. Easier for them to just tell me to ask them for things and then they'd decide whether I could have it or not. No need to learn about saving money or borrowing money or the possible consequences of each. Toys? Oh, yeah, I had a surprisingly large amount of toys. That my parents were always attempting to make me give away as soon as possible for some reason. I guess they wanted to teach me not to value objects or something? But having toys kept quiet, out of the way. Especially out of the way of my brother whose idea of playing with me was causing me misery and pain. If only toys didn't take up as much space... like these tablets and cellphones. Very little space. So convenient. Really, think about that toy from your childhood. That one your parents didn't let you play with right or didn't let you have at all. Maybe it was something like the "Aquafighters" from REMCO that had "easy to remove dye" or those "automatic squirt guns" that used the same substance. Maybe it was the STARCOM toys whose play feature made the most annoying sound in the world and you wanted to play with in the kitchen so that you could make the figures walk up the refrigerator. Annoying play features like these kill a toy. They aren't convenient for the adults. Are we really suprised that children who were taught that children are supposed to be convenient to their parents act the same way?
You could talk about this for like 2 hours and we'd still watch lol
Thanks!

Good, I'm glad to know some kids play with toys still!
Whst are we talking about here? 😂

Im old 😂 the 80s was a simpler time; more fun
I love the gijoe music in the back ground

Hmmm
Nope, sorry. Video games of the modern time are fucking stupid and require way too much of your life to play. Another Gen X win.
Haha. Yeah, I think I agree with this., My kids tell me I just suck at new games
