Bing Bong sacrificing himself WAS the saddest part of the film.
Personally, I think the ending when she finally stops repressing her sadness is the most emotional part for me. The music is incredible.
There's a tiktok trend that uses the "you made it! go save Riley!" part and you use that sound over a video over your new dog, then it flashes to the next screen that captioned "show the dog that sent them to you" and you hear Bing Bong say "take her to the moon for me, okay?" and they make me just blubber like a baby
For mom, it would make sense that the lead would be sadness. Not necessarily because she’s mostly sad but because sadness also is empathy/compassion as we saw in that one scene between sadness and Bing Bong. For the dad, the one taking the lead is anger to be more authoritative. Love the details in this movie
I loved that detail about the movie. I'm a mom myself now and have struggled with depression in the past, which obviously sucked but also made me more sensitive to other people's sadness in some ways. It influenced me to be a gentle parent and try to understand and connect rather than punish. But the inner sadness doesn't define me, just like it didn't define Riley's mom. Same as Riley's dad with Anger being at the lead. I enjoyed this film when I first saw it as a teen and now as a parent I love it even more.
I've seen this movie multiple times, and I cry at Bing Bong sacrificing himself every single time. You've given the most beautiful explanation of that scene, and it made me cry all over again. Thank you so much for sharing your story.

When you talked about imagination being able to save your life as a coping mechanism I related so hard like wowzers.
When I was very young I went through an extremely traumatic event, and as a way to cope my own imaginary friend evolved. It was originally a lion, but it grew horns, had a knight-like helmet, spikes down its spine, dragon claws and sprouted flames down its back that would burn everything yet keep me warm like a blanket. My imagination became my protector, and helped me feel safe in the environment I was in. Creativity to cope or express our wants and needs is so special, which is why Bing Bong was such a painful loss DX

"Dreams don't die, they find someone else." Damn, that's such a powerful statement. It hits especially hard for me as I'm an aspiring author. I was scripting my WIP graphic novel as I was watching this. I've been toiling with this idea for almost 20 years now, but fear has kept me from progressing. But I'm pushing through that. I've received many signs that I need to see this through to the end and get it out there. This video included. I'm so glad you and your dream re-found each other. I'm going to read the preview now. One thing that some mental health professionals don't get is that depression isn't always an illness; sometimes it's a natural response to difficult or impossible conditions a person is experiencing.
Riley had 11 years of a very stable homelife. She developed certain expectations that saw her through any previous hard conditions she had gone through. But now she doesn't have the support structure she had grown reliant upon. Dad's attention and presence is taken away by business demands; her mother is also struggling and now has shifted some of the burden onto Riley. That bedtime talk from her mother, telling her how much the family needs her to remain their happy girl, is burdening Riley with the necessity of providing the 'happy spark' that keeps the family together. It's normal for a parent to do that when the parent is struggling, but it's a lot to put on an 11-yr-old.
Riley is struggling without any real support. She's in a new city, a new climate, with very different options (hockey in California? moving from suburbia to urban settings?), a new school, no friends, different rules and procedures, different expectations of her... And initially Riley has no comfort with the familiarity of her 'stuff': her bed, her toys and games, all the accoutrement of her previous life. It's all alien and she has no map or guide to get through this. And then her parents are distracted from her, leaving her alone. It's a nightmare. Everything is demanding and nothing is comforting. Depression is a natural response.
But though depression is a natural response, the depression is predicated on the current temporary conditions. Once the conditions stabilize, they will cease to be depressing and she will cease to be depressed.
The scene I love most is when BingBong is crying over having lost his rocket/wagon and coming to terms with Riley forgetting about him, outgrowing him, and Sadness listens and is compassionate. Sadness teaches us empathy.
By the way, I hear that Richard Kind (the voice of BingBong) broke down in inconsolable tears at the very end of his screentime, as he was telling Joy to go on and save Riley, to 'take her to the moon'.
I'm SO glad you mentioned that scene where Sadness is showing empathy to Bing Bong, and just listening to him. When I first saw that movie (in my 30's too, so quite late!) that scene really taught me a lot about how simply doing that COULD help, because... all my life I had always been so anxious for my mom when she was upset because it always just seemed like she was so inconsolable, it always just scared me. I've always had the "solution-finder mentality" in my personality, and it was also so rare for myself to cry (AND I never did it in front of other people). So I NEVER guessed that I might be able to help what appears to be someone's inconsolable crying episode just by palliative responses. In the movie, when Joy asked Sadness (regarding her success at helping Bing Bong recover), "How did you do that?" that was MY exact thought: "Yeah, Sadness, how DID you did that? And, wow, I wonder if that could actually work for people I know if I tried it!" I think I DID try it out since I saw that movie, too, and the result seemed a lot better than what I used to do (or not do) lol!
You were very right about not expressing ourselves. I was not in a household where it was encouraged to be sad, angry, or any "negative" emotions. It was a household where we were encouraged to be happy and run from anything that made us uncomfortable. It ate me alive. I became depressed and eventually suicidal. It took me many years to come out of it. One of the most important things is to feel and acknowledge ALL our emotions. It's one things to feel our feelings, it's another choosing how to express them. I thought this movie did an incredible job showing depression and how it forms. Thank you for your stories of writing. I'm so glad you have begun writing again! I had those types of experiences with teachers, some being to the point of bullies. But as far as my writing, all of my teachers pushed and encouraged me. They sent me to special conferences. I remember in third grade, I showed my teacher some poems I wrote. She said: "If you write more of these, I'll put them together into a book for you." And she did. I'm trying to get back into writing after several years being too focused on life to do my passion.
For me, it was the selflessness of Bing Bong's sacrifice that got me. He knew what had to be done, and he didn't hesitate for one second. And he was so happy that it worked, he didn't e even think about what it would mean for him. He knew it and accepted it because it meant Joy can get to Riley, and he was content going out knowing that. This movie is phenomenal and your reaction to it was nothing short of amazing. ❤❤❤❤❤

Agreed. Even though he was imaginary, he was a true friend to Riley and cared enough that if meant Joy could get out of the memory dump, he would be forgotten forever so she could save Riley
Not even Richard Kind, who voiced Bing Bong got through that scene without completely breaking down. On a lighter note, there is a video of an old EPCOT Center attraction called CRANIUM COMMAND, which inspired this movie, and employed some of the people who developed that attraction...and it was easily the funniest thing Disney ever did for a show attraction.
To me Bing Bong symbolized the imagination of an innocent child. As we grow older we will eventually forget some memories and our ‘imaginary friend’ to make room for more. But like you said, some people are able to hold on to their imagination from childhood making it a part of their future like Walt Disney with his Micky Mouse. Bing Bong knew that he was disappearing with the forgotten memories but he pasted down his spirit to Joy when he told her to “Take her to the Moon for me.”- in hopes that she will carry out her creative dreams that she once had as a child.
Bing Bong was especially poignant for me. Apparently when I was very young I had an imaginary friend named George. When I was 10 my aunt and mom told me about him but even by that time I had forgotten him. I can only hope that George went down in a blaze of glory like Bing Bong did. RIP Bing Bong.
I have never cried about Bing bong and didn't understand why others did. Your personal story really hit me. It changed the whole scene for me. Thank you.

My dad died on October 9th 2000, Thanksgiving Monday. This year is one of the rare dates that Thanksgiving is on the same day. It took me a long time to get any semblance of a life together, even this movie oversimplifies emotions but does a great job of exploring them.
I loved that Joy learned it's okay to have different emotions. And I think the scene of Bing Bong sacrificing himself is one of the best and saddest part of the movie.
All emotions are important and sadness does have a strong factor because the more you try to suppress sadness you unleash it with other emotions that are unhealthy and joy keeps trying to shut sadness out, but that's not the way to go about it either, I liked the metaphor of this movie.
I don’t know why but while Bing Bong disappearing is sad, it doesn’t make me cry. But when Riley comes home and let’s out how she’s feeling, that scene really gets to me.

AT FIRST I also felt weird really appreciating when reactors are moved to tears, but think about this: It triggers us with empathy, and one important "empathy hormone" is oxytocin (and endorphins get released too)... and both of those hormones / neurotransmitters make you feel really good. So... don't feel weird; it's "empathy with benefits" lol :)
I just love this movie sm. as a person who has been depressed for most of my life, I remenber how it started from being happy most of the time to the feeling of just not having joy or sadness anymore, it was just fear/anxiety, disgust like I couldn't enjoy anything I liked before and anger cause I didn't understand what was happening and couldn't express my emotions.
everything's changed when I finally went to therapy, it's like I could feel joy and sadness finally coming back to headquarters after being "forgotten" for so long. all those years suffocating my emotions that I couldn't help it but to let it all out, so I cried for weeks, and that's exactly when I started feeling better, I finally felt like I could enjoy little things I used to do.
yes, being sad, angry or anxious most of time is terrible, but it's nothing compared to the feeling of emptiness of depression

Sadness is my favorite. I'm not depressed, but as someone who tends to feel down from time to time and views things in a more melancholy way and is OK with that I think she's a good representation. I view Joy as toxic positivity majority of the movie. When mom told her that she liked that Riley stayed their happy girl or something like it, it felt forced after that. She wanted to be happy for her mom but it wasn't genuine.
I didn't interpret Bing Bong disappearing quite the same as you. For me it doesn't mean losibg imagination all together, but as you get older you don't usually have imaginary friends anymore.

For me the death of Bing Bong represented Riley's departure from childhood and her emergence into adolescence/adulthood. And I cry every time, even in reactions.

Wow...that Big-bong scene was eye-opening to see through your eyes. Thank you for sharing that with us. I'd never thought of it the way you described it, and it definitely hit 10 times harder thinking of it that way. 😭 As a creative person who also gave up on one of my endeavors a long time ago (writing too, small world ♥), I felt this a lot. I have been a reader and book lover since as far back as I can remember. And when I was a kid I'd write little stories. Then this past month I started writing again. And I finally got to thinking about why I hadn't pursued it in such a long time. (over 20 years). There are probably a myriad of little reasons. But one of the biggest was that my 9th-grade English teacher accused me of plagiarising a story I'd written for a class assignment. I still have no idea why he was so adamant that I had cheated. He never backed up the accusation. He also never once asked me anything about my own story (which was not copied) or writing style. Just embarrassed me as a shy introverted creative girl, and gave me a bad grade. 😥 He destroyed the flame of creativity and the budding confidence I had in the craft of storytelling. It makes me wonder what might have been had he instead been even slightly encouraging. What kind of storyteller might I be now if I hadn't been doused with such negativity and needless criticism. My piano teacher told me that even though I have a good ear for music, I'd never be a professional musician because I have short/stubby fingers, not the long skelehands needed to extend/bridge over properly. After that I just kind stopped and haven't really played since, though I still love music over all.
@@spacedinosaur8733 Sadly, they're not wrong. i have baby hands too and could not properly play piano because of it. Music is much more physically demanding than visual arts. Anyone can learn to draw but some people may never ever learn to sing or compose etc. It's fucked up but we gotta live with it. However, you could still play something else or use your musical ear to make music - be it traditionally or with electronic tools.

Yup... *that scene* gets virtually everyone. There was one scene actually that got me EVEN worse than that most "infamous" scene... it was actually when Joy was stuck in the pit thinking Riley may never be happy again, especially at her line of "Do you remember... when she used to stick her tongue out when she was coloring?" I think the reason THAT line emotionally ambushed me was because I'm empathic AND have people I care about who have trouble being happy. Up until that point (at around age 30) I had actually NEVER EVER gotten a strong urge to cry during ANY movie, but THAT scene was just an INSTANT tear trigger!
Man, I have seen this movie many times, and watched reactors even more times, and it NEVER fails, I ALWAYS cry when we say bye to Bing Bong! Then when you lost it, I lost it with you girl, that part hits HARD!! This movie is such a masterpiece!!

When Bing Bong sacrifices himself, I’ve always thought about that scene as the loss of childhood. Riley is getting older, new mixtures of emotions… we all lose some of that childhood innocence. Makes me cry every time.
This is definitely one of Pixar's best movies. It really does a great job of breaking down emotions' roles in our lives and showing why it's important to feel and process them in a healthy way, and in a manner that people of all ages can understand. It's a truly brilliant bit of storytelling, and as you've no doubt seen in the comments, it seriously resonated with the audience. I've been going through a bit of a rough patch myself lately, and stories like this really help me remember not to keep my feelings bottled up (my default is much like Riley's; put on a brave face and wind up having a delayed reaction to everything).

Notice how, in the beginning, Joy explains the purpose of every emotion except for Sadness.She doesnt understand why Sadness exists because Riley doesnt understand it subconsciously either. So Riley uses Joy to suppress Sadness because her mom told her to keep being their happy girl to help her dad.

Kimmie, think you so much for sharing your thoughts on this movie, it has always been one if my favorites since its release, and I thought I understood all of its meanings , but you helped me understand even more. Thank you for sharing your personal story with us , we all have dreams and ambitions , but we let other emotions get in the way of that sometimes , especially other people telling you can’t do it, or it will never work. And it is understood that your teacher was just being a teacher , but she should have recognized the talent in you and at least said that you should do more of it, just don’t do it in her class. It was a perfect example of what this movie was about. We are all here to find our purpose in life , and I really wish that I had explored my dreams and did the work to make mine come true.

It's funny how you explain about the emotions and a few minutes later you tell sadness to get away from the memories 😅. The perspective has changed for Riley, the happy memories become more sad because she misses it. The memory is still the same ❤

I almost forgot to say: Wow I really like the way you didn't edit out any of the time that the camera was aimed at an empty chair (when you took a little "intermission" after... after Bing Bong's "infamous scene."). Sure, it COULD be considered by some to be "empty time in the video" but to ME it just makes it extra relatable because it made me think of the movies I've done that with!

I connect with your story of writing in class, the teacher coming in and embarrassing you and you not writing after that. I took art in high school. I was so, so proud of a picture I had drawn, it won a blue ribbon in a competition at school, and when I brought it home and my father saw it, he criticized my drawing. I didn’t draw anymore after that. Two years ago, I bought a sketch book, pencils, that kind of thing and started drawing again. I enjoy it, I’m good at it, but I wish I had stuck with it. I believe adults don’t realize the impact their words and actions have on children. Truly.

what i've always found interessting is that all the emotions have the hair colour of their bodies. all except joy. her hair is blue like sadness. just shows in an another unique way how tightly interwoven these 2 emotions are.
i use the mental picture of the yellow and blue memories from this movie so often in my real life. it helps me so much to look at things from a diffrent point of view.

54:42 Actually, as a psychology nerd, I gotta point out that there absolutely ARE many ways in which people from completely different parts of the world or even historical period would get the exact same ideas. It's very cool and really shows that we are all the same species across all races and that human brains are wired in the same ways. We share same patterns of thought, fallacies, biases, fantasies, needs, wishes and tools of personal storytelling because our brains are wired the same in a general sense. I find it fact absolutely fascinating and much cooler than some flim flam mystical explanations.
When Bing Bong jumped off, I viewed it as a sacrificing of your earliest childhood memories and fantasies in order to propel you into your new more mature self. None of us can take our earliest fantasies and make-believe world into adulthood as reality. We all have a Bing Bong in the "memory pit"... unfortunately, it's just part of aging.
I'm actually afraid of clowns because when my mom took me to the circus for the first time, a clown came up to me personally and started doing clown tricks. I now realize that he was just trying to make me laugh and that my true fear is probably being noticed out of a crowd of people. I'm an introvert. 😂

This film taught me something (with the beauty of bittersweet memories really resonating) and your reaction to it taught me something too. At first I uncomfortably/involuntarily laughed at it creating such a big reaction in you and after the initial shock, I worked out (before you elaborated) there was something deeper there. I don't relate directly to being shamed out of creativity but I could feel your pain in a big way and I relate to that pain. Also the idea of the dreams finding someone else resonated so thanks.

I think you should watch Koreancomic and cinema therapist. They summarize and give the little details that we didn’t know a lot! Sadness actually have reasons that she touches the happy memory!
I have a large notebook that I'm slowly filling up with all the ideas for movies, books, comics, games, short stories and everything in between that pop into my brain. I know I don't have the energy to finish even a short story so I'm trying to store it for later when I do.

Ive been depressed for a good while now. Ive seen this a movie a few times but watching it with you was destined to help me nativigate to the other side of my pain. I'm not quite there yet but you helped me to see the horizon. Thank you for sharing your perspective. It made a difference. ❤
Thanks Kemi for sharing your story about your early writings back in your school days…. Writer Elizabeth Gilbert has a book called - Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear . There is an Anecdote there from Elizabeth Gilbert and her also novelist friend Ann Patchet about a failed idea for a novel that was suppose to take place in Brasil. Very recommended book because she talks exactly about what you are saying with your twilight experience.
My wife has the audio book, and I've listened to it with her several times. It's a fantastic meditation on creativity and its power to shape your life for the better.

Looks like Riley's dad had a good job offer in SF, and it may be that the family was struggling a bit in Minnesota, so they decided to move to a smaller house in SF and maybe when the busienss takes off, get a better house.
Still, they all really missed their old home. I wonder what Riley's emotions did when they HIT the puberty (Haha literally hit the button, I imagine Anger doing it.)
Anger and Disgust taking turns on that puberty button. Sometimes Fear and Sadness can squeeze in and on some occasion Joy (remember those laughing fits that seemed to come out of nowhere?) 😂

The "I live in Canada" is very much an American culture reference.
It's a cliche in school when someone was lying about having a girlfriend or boyfriend to seem cool, they would say something like "You don't know them though. We met over summer break, and they live in Canada."

Can definitely relate SM wrote Twilight Saga and Host (about Aliens) but she said she had ideas for a story about Sirens IDK if she ever wrote it life got extra extra busy for me so I haven't read or even browsed the book section for years. My relatable is (I always from when I was young I imagined my own bedtime story adding to it every so often.) 5 orphan girls same age but different heights, hair, eye color, voices everything but turns out they're Quintuplets that a lady adopts all 5, in prolong of the story the lady that adopted the girls was actually the neighborhood babysitter who enters the big creepy manner to get out of the storm, helps the girls mother deliver them but forgets all about that night untill the girls 16th birthday because the moms protective mind enchantment fades, the girls learn they are Enchanters and they are now living in their family's old manner, ...anyway I get older fall in love with a TV series Charmed their not same age and grew up knowing each other but they are sisters who forgotten they were witchs returning to were they were born having to learn their abilities on the fly misshapes misunderstandings betrayals and all. I didn't publish a story but I did Mesh my idea on a FanFiction site years ago that was fun and I got it out of my system have long since deleted it and read other great great stories from that site.
