I noticed this trend with Droll and Ogre (and a few others) years back and treat them like an extremely predictable security. I'm always amazed at the number of people who buy these the minute something good is teased then sell them a week later once they don't seem good, only to buy them again next time they see something good. Why not just... keep them?
Droll seems like a weird answer. Yeah you can make plays around it, but the same can be said of other handtraps like Nibiru, and I don't think anyone is going to argue that card is bad. Edit: If I could go to bat for Ghost Reaper, I’d argue if you used it calling an even mildly important card in the extra deck, you’ve stopped more than 1% of the opponent’s combo. Also I know some of y’all are wrong about droll. Just cause there are lines around it, that doesn’t mean it’s ineffective.
Nibiru is kinda bad though. Not because the effect isn't busted but because of powercreep. Most meta-relevant decks can either extend beyond nib or just outright negate it.
It’s much easier to play around drool than nib. Letting you get that first search is a big deal and is the reason droll is only playable in formats where combo goes hard. Like insanely hard
Kurikara was INSANE in Kash format and saw widespread use, no? It actively obliterated the best deck of the format by punishing Shang greed in standby and the mandatory trigger of Ariseheart--you'd often get the massive attack boost and then could just walk the Fenrir and set up a board.
this is so true actually. I remember how well it folded kash. Including taking their own fenrir IF they survived. Hell, maybe even otk. Activate one monster on field like your own fenrir. Let them blow unicorn/fenrir, summon kurikara, ggs
it wasn't good enough. most kash players would play around it by locking out all the monster zones so if you did draw it you couldn't even use it. it's barely playable now since most good negates tribute themselves for cost.
@@Gilgamesh-em6ru If you activate a single monster effect and fenrir and unicorn punish to lock as much as possible. The MOST you're getting is 3. Riseheart from the first turn, fenrir and unicorn get their own zone lock. And now Kurikara tributes everything. As for modern day...Not *entirely* true but mostly yeah. One big thing is that the only recent tribute negates in this current format is azamina. Toadally is the other but Id be lying if I said I saw a lot of it. Ghost Reaper is good for one specific reason, theres a common card needed to summon a more expensive one and I cant afford the expensive one so i make sure the opponent cant play it. Banishing White Woman makes it really hard to summon Fiendsmith, Banishing IP makes SP a fair bit weaker, etc. Shes not great but she's a funny budget tech for locals
Think about it, if people who have S:P don't play the card, despite being able to banish their opponent's S:P with it, why would it be good for you, who can't even banish S:P?
@@dracoblizzard7944Because your cards are worse on average, so preventing your opponent from using their stronger cards is relatively more useful in comparison to your weaker cards than it would be in comparison to your opponent's stronger cards. I don't see a reason to start playing it now.
@dracoblizzard7944 it's very simple actually. I have 3 cards I summon in my extra, Muckraker, Bagooska and Ultimate Falcon, putting those at 3 copies in case I draw whichever of the 2 pots banishes cards randomly I have 6 useless slots in extra, I wanna be funny. I put 3 Ghost Reaper in the side and side her in over a couple bad traps for the matchup if I know whatever common rarity card I slapped in there is a part of my opponents combo. She normally does nothing. If I happen to need to get rid of IP, Gustav Max or Accesscode I can mess up my opponents combo or end board. Pre ban i had the turn skip Red Dragon Archfiend just in case. It's a meme strat for locals because I'm just there to play the game I enjoy. You don't need to act like I'm an idiot for doing so when I said in the original comment "She's not great."
I assumed most of the initial hype around senet switch and similar cards was due to people not just thinking that arrows mattered, but assuming the cards would interact with the emz, like you could use senet switch to move a monster out of the emz and summon another monster to that emz, or ground collapse disabling an emz. Then konami clarified that all these cards only affected the mmz
And The Band Played On is hilarious in Solfachord tho. (also Stygian Dirge, since both mess with Synchro and XYZ; and ATBPO can also often mess with Fusion decks like Branded, since Branded has a lot of Fusion 8s) But yea, it's not great. Also doesn't help that it doesn't affect Links, and it also doesn't stop simultaneous summons - like, players can still summon two 4s from one effect if they had no 4s before.
I'd add Stygian Dirge to the And the Band Played On/Mischief of the Yokai in terms of level mod cards that people are convinced will become mandatory 3 ofs in formats where Xyz monsters are good
Waking the Dragon. I crafted three in MD for some reason when the game was released. It really feels like when I draw it, the opponent decides to not remove it from the field (and when I don't draw it they always seem to have feather duster, lightning storm...), and in the rare occasion they do remove it, they negate it with Ash Blossom, since it can summon from deck, again, for some reason. I think is the only UR I regret crafting but I still hope one day it will be good.
@@OlgaZuccati can you name one? Anyway, I don't play Branded. I have made opponents pop it using gift exchange but that not a real strategy, just a gimmick.
1:25 spright being mentioned with power filter is funny to me because power filter does almost nothing to spright, every spright monster other than spright carrot has 1100 or more attack
One of the recent cards that got hype out of skepticism is Mutamorphosis. A reverse Metamorphosis that is surprisingly balanced with little utility despite the added Synchro application? Let's hope Konami doesn't print a card that breaks the card in half.
Ghost Reaper was good specifically in Dragon Link/Infernoble format during Covid for going second decks as the 6th best hand trap in pure going second builds. Functionally worked as extra copies of Nibiru against Isolde and Halq/Borrel Savage at a time when you absolutely had to draw two hand traps to be able to play going second. Topped a Cwarantine with it in Mekk Invoked
6:13 I always do a double take on Maid to Order because it does read like a craziest tech card in a tier 0 format, but then I remember it would still suck even in that environment. Chances are, the deck in question is super consistent if it see that much representation at tournaments, meaning it won't be worth playing over any handtraps, board breakers, or consistency cards
To be honest, for Engraver, we just need a tier 0 format where all of the top deck revolved around declaring a card name. Then Engraver will pop off. Surely we will get to that point eventually
If a highly represented top deck ever consistently ends on a boss that, say, names a card and negates all cards with that name for the turn and has no other negates, I could see Engraver seeing play. I think it needs to consistently counter an effect like that to be useful though - an effect which can be actively turned against its user by declaring a different name - because of how narrow it is. I doubt it'll ever be played because it can stop some popular cards without additional benifit. (edit - typo)
Hey, just want to thank you for making these thread videos. I know you joke about then being low effort, but as someone who's probably never going to play beyond duel links it's really fun to listen to the history of this game through you.
Closest Ghost Reaper had to a format was the first Master Duel WCQ where the meta was a Tear/Spright/Exosister triangle so you only needed to run Kitkallos, Gigantic and Mikailis to counter the meta and Tasuku who came 1st in the event even used it in his Spright deck. If there was ever another Triangle meta like DUEA (or more accurately NECH YCS Anaheim) where the top 3 decks are so far ahead rest of the meta but also play very differently from each other then Reaper might see usage as the one handtrap that can reasonably hit all of the top decks
One card that I overhyped myself on has to be "Meliae of the Trees" post shadow specters for Sylvan. Its Xyz monster that basically reads as: detatch to foolish burial a plant or SS a plant from the GY in face-up defense. The problem: it requires 2 level 3 earth monsters. Maybe one day in the future where a earth based plant deck that happens to have level 3 monsters that can do stuff in the graveyard with the current power level of yugioh, it might do something.
Ghost Belle is amazing in certain decks or in certain formats. It is rather specific though so if the deck or format doesn't do what it negates it has 0 use.
Trust me guys, PK will be good this format. Honestly though, it does have some pretty cool tech options like Shadow's light into Ken and Gen. Is that enough? As much as I want it to be, no, not really. What they really need is for Nib, shifter, and Evenly to get banned. At that point they'll be in a position where they're still probably rogue at best, but that's still better than right now.
Reaper usually finds her way into my Side whenever I can make her work, provided I have some slots in the Extra available. While it's usually not as strong as other handtraps in any given matchup, it can greatly simplify some endboards so my engine can push through, especially if you can chain it and waste some ressources along the way. More relevant for locals than anything competetive, but boy is it fun if it matters.
THANK YOU for espousing the correct opinion on Droll. So annoying seeing people talk about it in the same vein as like, Maxx C. This card is straight up BAD in the vast majority of formats. Even in the ones it's decent in, vs decks it supposedly "beats," those decks come up with lines to play around it that often end on a weaker but still respectable board. You know, the thing that handtraps are supposed to do. See Infernoble as an example. 99% of the cases where this card is actually an auto-lose are vs decks that are already not competitive, and therefore not relevant to the discussion. If your deck loses to any handtrap, Droll isn't an exception. Like sure, you can come up with weaker hands that basically pass turn vs Droll in good decks, but you can also come up with those same hands vs Ash Blossom, Effect Veiler, or any other handtrap, which is why Droll often doesn't make the cut once formats are more developed. The others tend to be degenerate decks that would make the game worse if they didn't have something like Droll gatekeeping them (Dark World.) I think part of it is Yu-Gi-Oh players have been playing a game that's so fast-paced in recent years that they've developed a hatred for anything that could be considered a "floodgate," regardless of its actual impact.
3:00 There’s a guy at my locals who is like this unironically. PK is their favorite deck and every conversation with him has a 50/50 chance that he’ll bring up PK and how he wishes Scythe gets unbanned so he can play it again.

Spellbound would be nice for ancient gear, when you got an ag monster before any support is activated. The retro card ag digger (?) let you set any spell card you want (could be ancient city too) and in the next turn, when you miss lethal you got dimensional barrier. But the big else is not ag decks its not searchable 😅
Kurikara literally was a side deck staple kashtira format and jumped in price its card that varies with formats like kaijus are and if anything she is a better kaiju in many scenarios
I played ghost reaper and winter cherries during that Bird Up/Swordsoul/DPE pile meta to hit Recital Starling/Chixiao/DPE. I was playing Dino so i had the extra deck space and i was playing a million hand traps anyway. I won't say it was "good" but it did lead to funny moments.
Insane that you think super poly doesn’t apply here, Yubel is one of the best decks in the format and has the best target in the entire game being loving defender and they don’t even play it?!? What do you mean?!?!
Inscription is actually a really good board breaker. The reason being you always want to stop the follow up. Even against fire king inscription breaks their board lol. I would argue it’s a better board breaker than going first but 😅
I intentionally search through lists looking for cards I haven't seen or heard of and they're wonderful niche and explosive uses in my decks and I've never known of half of these.
Anytime anyone mentions an FTK that involves burn damage (ie Gimmick Puppet), I would always jokingly say something along the lines of “Hanewata Stonks”
I like how sometimes the ending bit is the comments being wrong, it’s funny how the roles are reversed and now it’s the streamer who has the bad takes.
Stygian Dirge my beloved, it may be only a continuous trap that reduces levels by one but boy does it mess up some decks, is funny against centurion, it was even funnier against Sprights.
Ghost reaper was actually really good in TOSS format. Orkust more or less can't play without galataea. Striker is hard on the back foot without kagari. Thunder dragon has plays, but they all suck without Colossus. And salad pretty much scoops without balelynx. Mark my words, when TOSS gets as big as Edison, reaper will be in every side deck, and a lot of main decks.
The dream of Gnoming a Moon of the closed Heaven is so real tho… She has no downward arrows, their turn is over! Oh wait they just sent it for Diabellstar/OSS nevermind
I don't agree with the super poly take at the end. people don't play super poly because it's bad. people don't play super poly because they don't fucking have room in the extra deck anymore. EVEN BRANDED DOESN'T HAVE ROOM FOR IT ANYMORE. the only decks that can are control, Voiceless, or a gimmick deck. konami have made 2 cards able to search it and not going to lie I don't think people will ever do that when the full combo already wins the game without super poly.
I want them to ban mystical refpanel. Not cuz it's good, but because my locals has someone who has played that shit for months and used to guess when it works, he once activated desires and claimed it made opponent banish 10 and he draws two. Now he actually plays it right but takes a printout of the wiki page of cards that it works with.
it's said on YGOrg that it is correct, the opponent banishes 10 because that's the cost of the card and he draws the 2 cards that is the effects. gonna quote from the ygorg article that lists all the cards refpanel actually works with: "Remember that Mystical Refpanel only switches the effect of the Spell to the other player, but any of the Spell’s costs will always be paid by the activating player beforehand, and any conditions associated with activating that Spell Card are not switched. So, if you chain Mystical Refpanel to your opponent’s Pot of Duality, you perform the excavating and adding effect, but your opponent is still the one who cannot Special Summon that turn (or activate another copy of Pot of Duality). If you chain Mystical Refpanel to your opponent’s Pot of Desires, your opponent will have already paid the cost of banishing 10 cards, but when it resolves, you draw 2 cards without having to banish anything."
@@F3XT the problem is he wasn't chaining it to his opponent's pot of desires, he was chaining it to his own pot, and claimed it made his opponent banish for cost while he got the draw
It’s not that I’m personally convinced that these are going to break out in any format; nor am I trying to pill anyone on them. I will buy them in multiples once the hype dies down and they’re cheap which I think is both good for preparedness and possibly profit depending on if it happens.

The thing is cards like Nib and Droll are good until players learn to play around them....... and then they become huge bricks.
I mean, droll is mandatory for my deck since there is no safe play against charmies (I play salad). Otherwise, yeah.
It’s much easier to play around drool than nib. Letting you get that first search is a big deal and is the reason droll is only playable in formats where combo goes hard. Like insanely hard
@@nasty_playzyt4888nib is good in most formats. It’s good in this format outside exactly tenpai
Ryzeal needs regulus for an omni, but to really pull that off, you need a lot of somewhat bricky options and it has to be from ice
@@Gilgamesh-em6ru Unless you're talking about when diablosis was legal, in which case, I ever so rarely saw full locks and even if they went for double ira, they'd aim to shoot evenly or drnm faster than monster zones as they'd be out of grind if they went for that. It was also taken care of pretty fast. Mind hacker that is
Are we forgetting Samir Bachar's double kurikara in the finals of ycs London? Kurikara was very popular in that format - and very expensive
The idea's that Ghost Reaper's power is between that of good and budget cardboard. As for whether that's actually true, I will not comment.
(edit - removed a worse-than-useless bracketed "clarification")
@@delta3244 From my understanding:
They're a budget player, so they won't be able to play the top decks, or at least not in full capacity, but they still have access to most cards
Reaper is a below average card for non-budget players
Non-budget players can use Reaper more effectively than budget players ->
Reaper is a far below average card for budget players
Maybe the newest staples are expensive right now, but the vast majority of the post-modern meta has been played without them, and people still didn't play Reaper.
8:22 unironically, Sister is probably the third best ghost girl in modern Yugioh (behind Ash and Mourner).
Sister? Is this Hana Mizuki?
I assumed most of the initial hype around senet switch and similar cards was due to people not just thinking that arrows mattered, but assuming the cards would interact with the emz, like you could use senet switch to move a monster out of the emz and summon another monster to that emz, or ground collapse disabling an emz. Then konami clarified that all these cards only affected the mmz
And The Band Played On is hilarious in Solfachord tho. (also Stygian Dirge, since both mess with Synchro and XYZ; and ATBPO can also often mess with Fusion decks like Branded, since Branded has a lot of Fusion 8s)
But yea, it's not great. Also doesn't help that it doesn't affect Links, and it also doesn't stop simultaneous summons - like, players can still summon two 4s from one effect if they had no 4s before.
Doing Super Poly in *this* specific thread might be the wrongest any MBT Viewer has ever been
I'd add Stygian Dirge to the And the Band Played On/Mischief of the Yokai in terms of level mod cards that people are convinced will become mandatory 3 ofs in formats where Xyz monsters are good
I did mention it, with a voter sticker too! But it didnt make the cut on the actual video. He did react to my post about it on stream though
it was in the thread but we cut it for the video because i got on a 20 minute tangent about the art
@@MBTYuGiOh it was a great tangent! i definitely see the knight in the art
I think is the only UR I regret crafting but I still hope one day it will be good.
give them a monster that pops your backrow with sanctifier :)
I mean yeah but like at that point konami is litteraly desining around terrible cards being broken
Your opponent plays Primite Roar declaring Sunseed Genius Loci, you chain Engraver calling Little D
I know you joke about then being low effort, but as someone who's probably never going to play beyond duel links it's really fun to listen to the history of this game through you.
don’t you disrespect my goat power filter.

I'm happy my choice was picked to appear on the video, my little victory of the week.
NGL i completely 100% forgot about kurikara. i dont think ive seen it played in like 6 months
cutting the segment where he converts from a PSY-Frame Delta denier to a true believer, shameful!
The others tend to be degenerate decks that would make the game worse if they didn't have something like Droll gatekeeping them (Dark World.)
I think part of it is Yu-Gi-Oh players have been playing a game that's so fast-paced in recent years that they've developed a hatred for anything that could be considered a "floodgate," regardless of its actual impact.
Thank you mbt you and your Twitter thread have actually sold me on a card on this list that fixes alot of issues and helps me lab a pile deck
It's official. Dire has run out of intros to modify.

There’s a guy at my locals who is like this unironically. PK is their favorite deck and every conversation with him has a 50/50 chance that he’ll bring up PK and how he wishes Scythe gets unbanned so he can play it again.
2:14 I remember when the card was announced there was a guy saying that the card would kill combo decks and that it counters appolousa the only viable way combo decl could play through hand traps, instead the card did nothing but he kept doom post about the deck for about a month
Hear me out
Gizmek Uka can summon a Cartesia/Quem when playing against Fiendsmith (Requiem triggers it)
Turn 0 branded combos, time card, card is insane
...sometimes when it doesnt get ash'd+ thrust
I remember ghost belle also being very mandatory specifically to stop Tribrigade revolt
Spellbound was actually decent, and seen tops in YCS decks, when exactly Purrely was one of, if not the best deck. It has seen no play since though.
Weird skullmister wasn't here. It seems relevant with a good lvl, type and attribute but the effect is just too narrow.
Gnomaterial would have been lit in TOSS format. Sadly it came out as a band-aid fix right around when Konami also decided on a more...final solution. See also: Knightmare Corrupter Idlee, extra link format
Gnomaterial was really good on flamberge if they werent expecting it. No recycle, no repeated linking up. It *really* hurt them
I played ghost reaper and winter cherries during that Bird Up/Swordsoul/DPE pile meta to hit Recital Starling/Chixiao/DPE.
I would argue it’s a better board breaker than going first but 😅
Shared Ride will be good sometime in the future... right?
You know what makes Gnomaterial the best hand trap ever printed, the price on tcgplayer.
I intentionally search through lists looking for cards I haven't seen or heard of and they're wonderful niche and explosive uses in my decks and I've never known of half of these.
0:07 reference among us
8:22 the montage of obligatory check due to the voting sticker (what's the song playing?)
Anytime anyone mentions an FTK that involves burn damage (ie Gimmick Puppet), I would always jokingly say something along the lines of “Hanewata Stonks”
Power filter is gas bro
Literally vanity's emptiness trust
I like how sometimes the ending bit is the comments being wrong, it’s funny how the roles are reversed and now it’s the streamer who has the bad takes.
1:00 Ah yes, the great GGYGO's pet card. 🐸
I've been waiting so long for the third part of "people being clueless about good card not being good enough for them".
1:34 Powersink Stone is probably as “fair” as a floodgate can get because you actively have to work to keep up the lock.
Me putting Stygian Dirge in all my decklists because i remember it was kinda good in that one format in Duel Links (Harpie/Resonator)
The dream of Gnoming a Moon of the closed Heaven is so real tho…
She has no downward arrows, their turn is over! Oh wait they just sent it for Diabellstar/OSS nevermind
tbf wattkinetic did see some play because a lot of the super wombo combo decks instantly lost if you moved their suprex or anythogn of the like
that person hyping up "and the band played on" is me, along with Stygian Dirge
Ran Power Filter in an Alien pile. Was fun but didn't change game in either direction
No come on Ghost Reaper and Winter Cherries was good during… SPYRAL format…
but like common image mystical reff panel where to be playable. that would be amazing for how many judge calls per second are made by players
I kind of respect that he’s got a printout of the list.
it's said on YGOrg that it is correct, the opponent banishes 10 because that's the cost of the card and he draws the 2 cards that is the effects. gonna quote from the ygorg article that lists all the cards refpanel actually works with: "Remember that Mystical Refpanel only switches the effect of the Spell to the other player, but any of the Spell’s costs will always be paid by the activating player beforehand, and any conditions associated with activating that Spell Card are not switched.
@@BrandonSwinney-j2v oh that is funny
It’s not that I’m personally convinced that these are going to break out in any format; nor am I trying to pill anyone on them. I will buy them in multiples once the hype dies down and they’re cheap which I think is both good for preparedness and possibly profit depending on if it happens.
i used uka in r-ace when snake eye was like the only deck youd play against and treated it like 3 more copies of impulse
its so funny that kurikara divincarnate is one of those cards that is just randomly in duel links for no reason and has absolutely never seen play
Thank goodness no cursed thumbnails for this series 😂
OK, but hear me out. Clockwork Night is a legitimate floodgate against a lot of decks
To be honest , Silent Graveyard got me a lot of good wins just by being an total floodgate vs Prank-kids/Tri-brigade format back in 2022 :')
Chain disappearance, mischief of gnomes, deck dev virus
When links were newly introduced, i was playing a game against a link spam deck, he went first, summoned 2 link Spiders and used Senet Switch to move on of the Spiders into the other EMZ. I was pretty sure thats not how EMZ was inteded to be used but i didnt care as i proceeded to otk them with mermails 😂
and then senet switch was errata'd to only move cards in the main monster zones so no one could use it like that again
I took this video to mean “cards I have never heard of but should buy because maybe one day they’ll be good”
I swear, Ursartic will be meta next format.
I was swearing on Mistaken Arrest during Spyral format 🤣😅
Honestly, I'm surprised cherries wasn't even good in the halqdoncross-hell considering the decks back then fucking died when you negated Halq most of the time, so you'd think being able to just outright deny them that shit would murder them.
Mine was warning point for a couple formats
Power Filter has been doing a ton of heavy lifting in my masochist run, situationally crazy card
My girl Ghost Reaper!!!!! She's my favorite of the ghost sisters. I wish so bad that she was better.
I'll update this comment later, but Josh had teched in spellbound at one point. It has applications against purrely, but I forget what else.
4:16 I hate this period of any format since it always kills my Sky Striker lists
I knew a mf who had actually 2 pages of the engraver of the mark and thinking it would stop cross outs popular 😂

Master Duel is a real breeding ground for these due to best of one format tricking people into running dogshit tech “just in case”. The redditor mind can’t resist chasing the high of resolving Kuriphoton against Tenpai.
ive had so many people hype up spellbound at my locals to have never been hit by it ever in my life
