    I found a new found appreciation for interior designers when I recently did some work in an architecture practice alongside the interiors team. I was a little uneducated about what they did as well but they really are intertwined with architects. The girls in the interiors team were using all the same programs as the draftsmen / architects and there was a lot of back and forth about the internal spaces and collaboration between the architects and interiors. The interiors team also had to work out finishing schedules and a whole range of other documentation to achieve the exact desired look of the client. This meant a lot of sourcing of products (made easier by the large samples cupboard) and different pairing of materials to achieve the overall look and feel of the brief. My time with the interior team was defiantly enjoyable. - LJ 😀

    I think another difference is that in interior design you are working with the constraints of the building, while in architecture the constraints lie outside of the building.

      Very true! Thanks for the comment. (btw, I have been subscribed to your channel for a while. Keep up the good work! I'm excited to see your new series. I'm interested to see how you record the development process of your project. That's something I really want to do at some point with a project of my own. I'm not sure how to record it form a cinematic standpoint, but I'll be watching to see how you try going about it. Good luck!)

      This is not true the interior designer can make suggestions that lead to builders changing structures and structure is usually done by structural engineer not the architect happens all the time worked on loads of projects in uk. Architect is simply a project manager.

      Good explanation... Though the universal language of design is inside VS outside when it comes to interior designer vs architecture designer.
      Architects holistically can design bulding with interiors as well as structural design, only if they have learned it properly.
      Interior designers can suggest few (non load bearing structure modifications) but not total structural components.
      Today's it's more of a specialised job when it comes to architecture for buildings.
      Great to hear from your experience... Keep up the spirit✍️✌

    Good job with the elevator pitch drew but if an "interior designer" wants to practice professionally at the same level as architects and building engineers they are going to need an inordinate amount of innate skill and/or an accredited education, supervised apprenticeship and vetting by examination. No we do not perform structural calculations or design structures but we must know the basic principles of structure and its resistance to gravity as well as applicable building codes and life safety requirements. In short there are two types of interior design to be aware of.....code regulated interior design and interior design/decoration that interior design that is not encumbered by building codes, accessibility, life safety, etc. Big difference.

    A friend of mine worked in one of the large and very well respected architecture firms firms in Toronto (KPMB). I was kind of dissing interior designers one day and he said that he worked with some interior designers on some theatre projects in Toronto and they brought a lot to those projects. I think there is a parallel with landscape architecture. Sometimes people don't understand what they do but the difference in quality between a large project which involves a landscape architect and one that doesn't is immediately palpable.

    • @Rockymtway98
      @Rockymtway98 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Bad analogy, but closer to the idea. Urban planners are macro spatial thinkers, interior designers are micro spatial thinkers and architects fall in between; it really has NOTHING to do with "furnishings" or being "not good" at something when it comes to design! It is nothing more than about scaling, one is not superior to the other and there is a lot of crossover within the architectural world of design. Otherwise, without the crossover of the macro and micro thinkers the building of an architect would be nothing more than a useless building in the middle of a desert or real to life China ghost town.

      I am currently studying in the UK. The course is a BA (Hons) Interior Architecture & Design. It's a blend of the two but without learning to design the external building skeleton or urbanity as such. Although we do learn building codes and ergonomics etc. Also we can't call ourselves Interior Architects after we finish the course as in the UK the term `architect' is highly regulated. So we will be Interior Designers. We often work with pre-defined spaces and repurpose spaces. We learn how to design things such as exhibition stands, kitchens, retail stores, museum staircase, small cube home. It has also covered quite a lot about company branding and how to communicate a brand. Also art history and history of architecture and famous designers etc. You can actually study as a foreign student online, the company is called IDI and they provide the courses online from University of Hertfordshire.

      It seems like you may be stressed because you really like interior design but you have trouble making friends and finding people to relate too. Hi Xavier, I'm also studying interior arch and am much more drawn to structural interiors and lighting then I am to fluffy pillows etc. I don't think you should limit yourself to straight male friends. For example, I'm the nice guy, I like 4x4, mountain bikes, games, and I fix Fighter Jets for a living, all the great stuff, but because I'm gay, most guys who would be great mates otherwise, still won't give me the time of day, and it's absolutely sucks, I can honestly say I do not have many mates. Be the bigger person and put any assumptions you have about people aside, you might find that people you didn't expect will become your best friends, I certainly wish people would just give me a chance

    I don't want to sound rude, but I'm from a developing country (third world) and I think we can make do without an interior designer. I think it's not as essential like having an engineer and an architect. I'm not saying that I'm on a higher or heck even on equal level with interior designers but I think I could do just fine without them especially because I don't have a lot of money.

    Architect, Interior & Graphics designers is a field name.
    example :
    If u start some business and need a Office for your staff. also u have some empty Land. Then,
    * You need an 'Architect designer' for Structural design to build a building.
    * Then u need an 'Interior designer'
    for more detail works, like partitions, furnitures & decorations..
    * Then u need a 'Graphic designer' who works on how you communicate your business with other peoples..

    • @DrewPaulBell
      @DrewPaulBell  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It depends on the firm and the size of the project. At my firm we do our own structural calculations and framing plans and we only hire the structural engineer if we have concerns. We typically use wood frame construction or steel. If we used concrete we would get a structural engineer. And sometimes we hire the engineer if we are concerned about lateral stability. We are not afraid of cantilevers, but if we have a continuous member with multiple/uneven spans we may call the engineer to check that one member because our software is limited in a few ways. We do single family residential though. For much larger buildings, structural engineers are probably more common.

      Architects tend to inflate their role and importance. Most architects are average designers but always compare themselves to Frank Lloyd Wright or Le Corbusier. Most architects are nowhere near as talented as either Corb or FLW. Sorry but let's be honest. All the architectural firms I've worked in hire, or have on the clients project team: Structural engineers, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers at a minimum. Code consultants, acoustic consultants, landscape architects, and sometimes many more consultants.
      Architects have little if anything to do with structural design, and many other aspects of a building that lay people think they handle. They do overall / general planning and design and coordination of many different sub consultants.
      A good architect's design direction has a profound and enormous impact on a finished projects look and feel but there are literally hundreds of different kinds of specialized expertise involved in any significant project.

    • @DrewPaulBell
      @DrewPaulBell  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +htm i mean anyone can change their career course and go through the process of becoming an architect. But to be a licensed architect you need to complete a NAAB accredited degree, AXP intern hours, and the Architecture Registration Exam. Interior designers have totally different licensing and accrediting boards. So someone with an interior design degree, even if it's accredited by CIDA, wouldn't satisfy the NAAB requirements and wouldn't be eligible to sit for the ARE exam.

    • @johndoe3034

      htm in certain states..such as Colorado, all you have to do is to work under a licensed architect for 10 years and pass the architecture registration exams to become an architect. Recently, one of our very own interior designer became an licensed architect this way.

    • @Rockymtway98
      @Rockymtway98 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To become a licensed interior designer you need to complete a CIDA accredited degree, 3520 hours of experience under a licensed NCIDA and the NCIDA Exam. So someone with an architect degree would not be eligible to set for the NCIDA exam without first working 7040 hours experience in interior design. While there are currently other pathways for sitting for the exam, those gaps are closing. Interior designers are NOT an inferior profession!

    • @steph3713

      Not to mention that the Errors and Omissions insurance liabilities are rated the same for an Interior Designer and an Architect. Once you have completed your NCIDQ certification, you can conduct some of the same functions as an architect. Both are very important professions that cover a lot of ground.

    A good architect's design direction has a profound and enormous impact on a finished projects look and feel but there are literally hundreds of different kinds of specialized expertise involved in any significant project.

    The big difference is an interior designer has almost no math while architecture is all mathematics
