This is actually the first video I´ve found by someone actually showing practical use and real world examples of workflow for this controlsurface. Very good. I might buy one
Right on mate, I appreciate hearing that. Sometimes, walkthroughs can be dense.. but I tried 😆 Legitimately, I’ve had tons of controllers, there is nothing like this out there. The combination of the UF8/UF1/UC1 - it’s truly like a modern mini ssl console that you can program your most important shortcuts.
Hands down the best video I have watched on the SSL Control surfaces. I have the same setup but your workflow makes this even more of a killer combo. Great job!
Woot! I love these controllers. Hopefully SSL announces some epic stuff soon with more new updates, the sky is the limit for these things. I really like the integration with the new ssl branded channel strips and how they can control the Daw parameters. It’s wild lol 😆 But thanks! A bit of thought went into creating the whole flow. I’ll be working on improving it.
Wow @thestevekinney great job! i was in the midst of setting up my new UF8 with Luna and feeling very overwhelmed. Then I watched all 3 of your SSL UF8 videos and by the time i finished the third i now feel very submerged in the SSL ecosphere and quite condident on how to run my controller. Thanks for that!
Wooot! Right on mate! There isn’t anything like it at the moment. Best controllers out there. The softube stuff is close… but close doesn’t win the race! I just put a new one out too - on the addition of the SSL 360 mixer update and why it’s cool.
That is an amazingly functional template. The best I have checked out so far, because it keeps you to the workflow. Really, really useful and well thought. Keep in mind for german users (in my case) , there might be some slightly other shortcuts inside Luna. In this case: Shortcut for "Snap on/off" is "shift+option+7" otherwise it won't work. And for creating new markers make sure, your number keypad pad to the right side of the larger Mac keyboard is "on/activated". All the other pre-setted commands work perfectly. Thank you so much, Steve. Very useful stuff.
Badass! For those other keyboard shortcuts, is that because of the different language? Keyboard layout is different altogether kind of thing? Or is that something UA would have coded? I’m trying to understand if I’d need to make an entirely separate file or if there is a way to keep it one size fits all. Thanks so much for sharing!
Can't really tell. Of course we are using different letter arrangements on the keyboard. But I am not sure, if this is the point. UA has not come up or is really trying to do different language shortcuts. Why should they since it is all in English anyway. The shortcut for Snap on/off is originally: "shift \". The Backslash is not on the German keyboard in the first place, that is, why we have to check for the "shortcut inside the shortcut", that is shift+option+7 in oder to get the backslash. If you are intending to deliver further updates or enhancements, extensions to that template let me check for you in advance, if you want to be on the safe side. @@TheSteveKinney

That’s why you literally never see me bring up stuff haha I want to, but it’s a pain in the ass dealing with copywrite strikes and getting the channel green listed from the artists publisher.
Steve..these templates are great and very useful for Luna's workflow. With my UF8 + UF1 setup, I am tripping up during your NEW GROUPS section with the ability to select multiple tracks using the UF8. I can only select 1 track at time using the SEL buttons. What am I missing here?
When creating a new group, you have to have all of the tracks you want in the group highlighted first. Then hit the new group button. To select multiple tracks at once, hold shift and select the first track and while holding shift select the last track. Toggle groups on and off to be able to select individual tracks.
This video is amazing! Love the workflow grind and all the work your putting in. However could you render your videos in a 2.35 aspect ratio resolution so you can get rid of the black bars at the top and bottom when not in full screen? There are some pretty handy aspect ratio resolution calculators. 1080p because like 1920 x 816 or something like that. But your content is so amazing!!

I’ll check on my next video during upload if they now allow alternative aspect ratios, I would prefer it myself. Little bonus tip, you should be able to fully zoom in and out if you’re watching on iPhone, I film and upload in 4K - so resolution holds up nicely. Cheers Cody!
Great video Steve, thank you for your hard work and sharing. Hmmmm. I’d start by: 1. Understanding the signal flow of the mixer, and the tools inside it. It’s straight forward, but important. 2. Know your device modes, like ARM mode, core audio or Apollo mode. 3. Learn the shortcuts that make the most sense for your workflow.
Right on! Keep in mind, that some of the mapping requires the UF1, as it was built for that. You could probably remap the same stuff on the UF1 to the other UF8 That would feel good.

Yes, you should be able to. The pre roll toggle is “latching” so whatever your session is opened on is where the toggle will start, so if the toggle is on and hit the command, it turns off. If you happen to click it on and hit the button, it will turn off etc. So - essentially, you’d create a macro. A command that toggles pre roll and then also play / stop / rec All at the same time. Very powerful.
@TheSteveKinney - I very recently picked up the UF8 and UF1 combo and I'm loving your template and workflow in MCU mode for LUNA. Today I just started exploring what the 360 plug-in mixer mode looks and feels like and I'm a bit confused. You mentioned that you have Layer 3 mapped to 360 enabled channel strip plugin control, but how/when do you use that versus your MCU mode? For example, I don't see a way to initiate a bus spill from within plug-in mixer mode. I also don't see a way to toggle anything about the LUNA GUI in that mode (timeline vs mixer, for example). It seems like the plug-in mixer mode is for a very specific part of doing a mix, and not just an alternative for "better" general DAW control (even though they now have the daw/plug-in mode button). What am I missing? Or rather, how and when do you use MCU vs Plug-In Mixer mode, yourself? Thanks!
That layer three plug-in mixer is specific to solid-state logic’s line of plug-ins… It’s also known as the SSL 360 mixer. The use case is if you put the SSL 4K-B Plug-in across all your channels inside of your project. You didn’t have a deep parameter control across both the UF8 and UF1. Outside of that situation I stay on the original MCU layer. Hopefully that clarifies it a bit. Cheers.
@@TheSteveKinney yep, that all makes sense, and I knew you had to have a 360 enabled channel strip on each channel to use the 360 mixer. But what I didn't quite understand is that folks seem to tout the 360 mixer as a viable alternative to MCU control with added benefits like track color, longer track names, etc. But really those benefits are still "capped" inside of any work that pertains to the channel strip processing capabilities, right? Very recently you get some more optional DAW control (faders, pan, sends), but I think much / most of my work in LUNA would still be in MCU mode (showing different LUNA views, comping, markers, bus spill, automation). Especially while composing/recording. It'd be great if they could have a more lightweight plugin without the channel strip capabilities that was just more of a daw control glue layer for the hardware controllers so we could get the track colors, longer names, or other enhancements that MCU can't offer without needing to have the actual SSL signal processing (channel strip) on every channel.
@@JonKinney 10000%. I think a lot of this falls on LUNA dev team to implement pass thru information that SSL 360 can “see” It’s a limitation of a few things at once.
Ok, so we now have a UA strip pluggin and a SSL strip plugin. Do you go with the company that makes the surface controller or the company that created the DAW? I'm torn and have no idea which direction as my studio has both UA Apollo hardware and the SSL UC1,UF1,and 2 UF8's.Any input is greatly appreciated
The new 4K B from ssl has some serious advantages. Especially if you use the UF8 with Luna. I find myself reaching for that one more often lately. However, if I need a mic pre while tracking, unison is still the way I’d go.
Hi Steve, happy Thanksgiving! I get it and agree, ill save the money being is I have the 4k plug-in and the SSL compressor, both seem to be getting the job done.@@TheSteveKinney

Well - it would work like a normal MCU daw control. The fancy control is actually via the SSL line of plugins. Via SSL 360 - that’s where it’s fun. Then the workflow mimics having an out of the box console because it’s kind of outside of your DAW’s mixer.
@@TheSteveKinney I imagine for plug ins the new console one mk3 will be the tool for that but I’m super happy to have the UC 1 as my always ssl on every strip as that’s a tried and true work flow if you came up in a big analog studio and I’m so much happier since I put it in place , at least as a creator writer that engineers himself these days … ps loaded your templates that was easy and a great logical re think and new starting place .. ssl should offer them and a few others perhaps as a kick start .. not that I didn’t have them set up it’s just you put some time into a logical flow !

ah brilliant! i was able to get to the PLUGIN soft key section, and map a specific parameter to one of the small VPOT (not sure how the system choses which vpot to map it to(, but when i press the 'Flip" button, it changes the fader to a Gain control. any guidance on how to 'move' the VPOT to the fader?@@TheSteveKinney
@@bvrbvs use the flip key.
Steve, i record mainly guitars, can i programme UF1 to use the punch in / out function in Luna ?
Utilizing pre & post roll ….
A command that toggles pre roll and then also play / stop / rec
All at the same time.
Thanks!
That layer three plug-in mixer is specific to solid-state logic’s line of plug-ins…
It’s also known as the SSL 360 mixer.
I think a lot of this falls on LUNA dev team to implement pass thru information that SSL 360 can “see”
It’s a limitation of a few things at once.
Excellent video
Cheers mate!
Joe Namath? The Legend.
Haha 😆 color grade makes my giants jersey look a bit green.
some nice ideas
Thanks mate! UF1 and UF8 are the best controllers out there at the moment. Nothing comes close!
Cheers!
Thanks looking for info on this
Right on, happy to answer any questions you have on the UF1 & UF8.
Reallyyyy rocks with Luna. Makes the whole thing feel like an analogue system / console for sure.
I'm probably gonna dive more into the SSL based plugins to check out the 360 mixer more. Pretty neat.
I am curious about how this gear will work with UAD SSL 4000 series console bundle. I have my eye on both!
Well - it would work like a normal MCU daw control.
The fancy control is actually via the SSL line of plugins. Via SSL 360 - that’s where it’s fun.
Then the workflow mimics having an out of the box console because it’s kind of outside of your DAW’s mixer.
But we’ll you might as well add a uc 1 as it’s just so nice itself and with 360
@@bobbyarthur8809 something tells me they will open up the UC1 to use with other plugins, if they do - I’m 100% sold on the uc1.
@@bobbyarthur8809 would love to partner with SSL!
Let them know. I have a ton of logical feedback. I reached out a few times, but it always helps hearing from someone else.
I just wanna make things better. 😅
Yes ..In the 360 software I can load in UF8 , but when I click on UF1 tab the is no load tab…
Hey there!
Yeah - it’s definitely there. But it’s hidden with a drop down arrow on the left side.
Nice job....you lost me at Giants though....🦅
Ha ha! That’s funny, I was wondering when someone would call it out.
Been a giants fan my whole life, there’s pictures of me when I was about 5 wearing giants jerseys. I even remember the Dave Brown days. Just figured I’d share more personality on the channel ha 😅 loyal fan, even when they are playing like trash!
Those eagles though... they sure are flying high at the moment. Dang! Cheers mate!
Hi Steve,Is the UC1 in the near future?
🤔hmmmm.
I wonder. I’m running out of desk space. 😅 but I think it wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Thanks mate!
@@TheSteveKinneydo you have as well templates for Logic Pro ?
@@user-or3ce4gt2r hey mate, I reallyyyyy don’t like working in logic, only ever do if I absolutely need to - so - short answer, nope. Nothing customized for it.
If I’m in it, I’m just using the default setting.

anybody get the uf8 template to work? i'm not seeing the edited luna quick keys and soft keys etc, only what looks like the defaults.
Which template did you download?
The stand alone UF8 or the UF1 + UF8?
both actually. first the bundle. then i tried the stand alone (v3.0). @@TheSteveKinney
