When you saw the 5 1/2 mark you rightly said (if this is an American saw) that this indicates 5 1/2 points per inch (ppi), but then you assumed that this means there would be five full teeth plus 1/2 the next tooth i.e. six teeth; no, there are only five teeth in 5 1/2 ppi. The English count the teeth (tpi) which techinically makes more sense but the practicality of the Americans found it easier to count points. Each tooth has one point, you can't have half a point.
tpi = ppi + 1
ppi = tpi - 1

PPI is measured point to point. TPI is measured gullet to gullet. The 5 1/2 is PPI.

That chicken jump on my work bench id of cleaved his head off before he could take a second step !!!! Don’t get me wrong i like eatin chicken just don’t want their dirty asses on my bench !!! Pot pie it is lol
