It's always a pleasure listening to people who're masters of their art. It just so happened that I'm even more interested in this one because I'm getting into woodworking. Thank you :>

Just subscribed matey, I was gifted my dad in-laws old saws a few years ago when he passed. Recently I was given a odd looking tool (like yours lol) so I will be watching a few more of your videos.
Hopefully I will get some life out of dad's old saws. Love the wooden jig too. Cheers matey.

I was also bestowed an odd looking tool haha! Much the same reason I am also here, and subscribed.
I've had some great satisfaction in restoring old tools.
Good luck on your restoration endeavour! 😊

Great tutorial, thanks! I like older saws and finally found a set tool last week. Mine doesn't have numbers so there will still be a learning curve but I have enough old saws to practice on now. Cheers from Canada.

    Great video...thanks for making it.
You made it easy to understand the how and why of setting the teeth.
    Cheers from Canada North

Thanks for the excellent explanation; I had 2 of these tools in my shed and had no idea what they were for until I watched your video.

Got a Dunlap 4885 tool in my collection of stuff from my father (gone over 20 years) and from my Grandfather. Didn't have a clue what it was used for, and found one Ebay picture of the exact tool.
This vid. showed me How to use it (if I can find my hand saw to practice it on :)
    Thanks, very nice and informative!

You sound a lot like my father (similar voice and accent). He also always used to say, "for arguments sake" when explaining things. As a kid, I thought he was saying "For Fargamens sake..." And it took me quite a few years before I asked him who "Fargaman" was. Now, going thru tools I inherited, I find this positive saw set #7 and didn't even know what it was. I cam to TH-cam and it was like he was showing me how to use it. Its too bad I never learned while he could have shown me, but I'll have to give it a try now.

Thanks Andy, I just spent the afternoon digging through my father-in-law's old tool box that was handed down to him. There were two saw sets (Eclipse No. 77 and a Stanley No. 43) and a couple of old hand saws. I had no idea what they were for or how to use them. I just might try my hand at saw sharpening!

I found one once, don't remember where. Actually, I had no idea what it was but it looked old and I had a strange feeling that I might need to use it someday in the future, so I bought it.

my brother is an auctioneer.... hand saws are a give away.... paid the most @ $2.00 per saw... no one wants these tools, but may need them in the future.

new saws cut better, they're cheap and have hardened blades. no point sharpening saws anymore. years ago your saw would have cost a weeks wages so it was vital to look after for your whole life, now it costs you an hours wage or less so why bother? 30 seconds on Amazon and the next day you'll have a brand new saw ready to go for months

Sharpening a saw can take minutes once you know how and will last forever if taken care of

At the start it`s fairly obvious you are filing with a tilted file (ie not horizontal ) but you have not mentioned that in the subtitles . In my dim and distant past I always thought this was a valid way to do the job . But then the Horizontal and nothing else rule jumped in . More confusion . But saw filing clamps always had slanted edges .

Generically, it's a saw set. It looks just like the one I've bought, an Eclipse No. 77 Made in England.

you appeared to be setting each tooth just offset from the highest point of the tooth. is this the case? can you explain? also, there times when i am setting, the saw will make a noise like a tooth broke off, but this is not the case. is this normal or am i setting too hard?

Just found one in some estate tools. I may bring an old normal saw back to life. Wonder if it works on circular blades too?

Sorry, but you say nonsense. The scale is not related to the number of tooth per inch. It is just a rough scale and only you decide the amount of set according to the size of saw teeth. It is not my guess, it is written in makers manuals. Try to read it sometimes, is not wasting your time ;-)

    • @markharris5771
      @markharris5771 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Michal Chládek Paul Sellars agrees with the guy in this video, the manual states the number on the set equates to the number of teeth per inch. However, he goes on to say that No4 is too much set for a 4tpi saw.

Also if you look at the second set of original instructions it says the same:
