- What do you do when you buy a back saw that has a bend in it? How about if it's the back that isn't straight. Paul shows what he has had to do to a couple of the saws that he has got hold of recently.

I find it odd that you claim to have purchased a few none straight saws direct from the manufacturer? One could be excused but three? I doubt that as each one is checked for straightness. Also most folk would return the items if they felt they were not right but yet it's strange how you now have products to suit a video you have done on saw straightening?

I have a big pile of old, good quality hand saws that I am eager to restore and use or trade. I have the sharpening down well enough but need help with taking the bends out of large, backless saws. I've found instructions on the internet that call for tapping on the saw with a roundhead hammer, but can't figure it out for myself. I need video of this craft.
I would also like to restore the etch on some of these saws but can't even find verbal instructions for this. I am sure I am not alone in this- there must be many others wanting to do the same things.

Paul Sellers Sounds good. Can't wait. I have one with a bend but I'm reluctant to start hitting with hammer until I see what Paul has to say about it. Plus I think I need an anvil.
+gregg usselman For raising an etch you can use gun bluing or vinegar. Just put it over the whole area, and then used sand paper attached to something flat ,or a flat sharpening stone, to sand off the black rust that is on unwanted areas. Some etches will be too shallow even for this, however.
+gregg usselman Also, if a saw has a bow in it, you easily get it out just by submerging it in boiling water or pouring boiling water on it and then simply bending it out.

because he was trained as a young man by craftsman and he's been doing it for 50 years or so.
Young people do not apprentice themselves to craftsman, at least not in this country. Too many regulations for a craftsman to risk hiring an apprentice (the govt.regs) and young people way overvalue their time and undervalue a skill.

Rather shocking that some manufacturers would let saws pass to the consumer with a bend or not optimally sharpened!

I want to learn of any tricks in straightening a "hand saw" or panel saw, the kind like you normally buy for carpentry work. Oh yeah, they're not used much now. When I had my first job, 1968, this was standard.

I hope the folks who make these gents saws are watching this.... Garlick and Thomas Flinn et al. it's your products that have gone downhill over the years yet the cost remains quite high relative to this poor quality that is being put out.
Hello, I don't see how the quality of our products has gone down hill over the years? I can assure you that the PAX Gents Saws do NOT go out unstraightened as this video perhaps suggests. Our returns rate reflects this.
We have watched. We find it odd that he has three faulty products that suit his needs to make a saw straightening video.
Makes me think its from delivery, knocking around in the back of vans.
Scrimjaw I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. Companies really tend to cheap out on the packaging. It says a lot about the company.

Hello Paul, I have succesfully used your advice on a backsaw quite similar to those shown in your tutorial. Now I found an old Slack, Sellars & Co tenon saw on a flee market, payed 2€ btw. As the Piston grip is screwed to the blade, I wonder how to straighten it? The back itself is made of u-bent steel and is dead straight, whereas the blade not only is bent in one direction but kind of two way zig-zag curved. Maybe it will be best to unscrew rhe blade trying to tap and whack without the aid of a handle? Any advice would be appreciated. Simon.
How would you take the bend out of regular handsaws?

Thanks for the video, I just bought a lovely old Spear & Jackson carcase saw from the local car boot sale that I'll apply these techniques to (as it has a slight bend in the spine).

I bought one of these Gents saws recently and was a bit disappointed with it. I thought it was just poor quality and haven't used it much. Now I know how to fettle it, thank you :-)

Definitely going to put these techniques to use restoring my late grandfather's saw back into usable shape.
How many TPI does these saws have? I'm asking this because most gent and dovetail saws come in 20 TPI and honestly I don't think I'll be able to sharpen saws with teeth so small. Thanks.

I tried this whacking technique on two of my tenon saws. Only thing that happens is that the spline gets detached from the blade. What am I doing wrong?

Do you any suggestions on straightening out the blades on a lopper? My blade doesn't touch the other piece.

Hi. First off again thanks a lot for all your vids.
A pal gave me some used japanese saws for free.
One of them although it's still sharp has a nasty bend along the first 5 cm on the front of the buttom saw side.
Obviously the previous owner didn't understand that it's a pull saw and not a push saw...
Is there something I can do to get it fixed?
SMCG if you put the blade in a vise fairly tight and heat it with a heat gun to about 60 degrees celsius it will go back to original straightness although some i have had have left the factory with a ever so slight right hand bend be careful not to heat it too much to avoid making the blade brittle

Paul, how do you straighten a backsaw?
We do a video on this on a bent saw on TH-cam but kinked saws generally cannot be straightened.
