My experience after 21 cruises is that as cruises have become less expensive, more and more people have realized the cost effectiveness of being on a moving resort. As that has happened, more and more people who didn’t go to charm school are cruising and bringing their lack of generalized manners with them. This includes people of all ethnic backgrounds and economic levels. I typically cruise in a suite, in an exclusive section of the ship. People with money can be just as classless as those with more modest incomes. Money doesn’t make you classy and poverty doesn’t make you classless. That’s all upbringing.

Great comment. My first cruise was on Carnival in 1992, it was geared towards young professionals and college aged (The Party Ship) not families. I had a blast. No problems with fighting - mostly people in their 20-30s starting their careers, meeting other like minded young adults and experiencing new things. It cost a lot more and no drink packages in those days.

I’m a black women from an inner city NYC neighborhood that grew up on food stamps and section 8 and I really appreciate your take on the matter. Being black is not the sum of my existence nor do my traumas and misfortunes dictate my attitude towards life. Being black is not the most interesting thing about me nor do I feel the need to treat my racial identity as an accomplishment.

@@tonywood1969 Yes, really. Sold your own selves into slavery then have the narcissistic gall to accuse people with white skin of the deed after our godly constitution framed the very argument that freed you, to the tune of 650k dead in the civil war. Since that time you've done nothing but whine, complain, riot, loot, pillage, murder and destroy. Few of you have any mother/father family values and you vote marxist, baby killing demoncrat every single time. Obama was a gay, muslim communist, married to a man and to this day, not one black city on this earth is desirable to live in. Everybody owes you something and you've always got an excuse why you can't get along. Every single American is sick to s--- of you, but we can't say a damn thing lest we get fired from our job for talking truth. The only hope you insane people have is Jesus, but you even abuse Him - yell out loud by His name in church so you can get more free stuff but live like demons and attack attack, loot, riot, steal, lie and accuse the righteous rest of the week. I've seen your people ruin every good thing you come in contact with and we don't feel this way, 'because you black.' We know these things because it just so happens that these characteristics are exactly who and what blacks are. No nation on this earth is the better for you being there. You don't produce a damn thing. You make crappy art and you just basically seemed cursed. America has bent over backwards to assist and help and give to you, but at every turn, you are never satisfied. Dear God when will it end? Yes, please go back to where you came and leave us to make America great again. Of course you will not. Only by force or the power of God will you diminish like the orgs of Lord of the Rings. Knowing this, multitudes have simply moved away from you. Multitudes have relocated away from your Chicago, Atlanta, Columbia SC, etc. black hells and found jobs in areas that remain mostly white. It's the only way to live in peace and get away from your loud, obnoxious, emotional, zero honor, disruptive, hateful, hypocritical and aggressive behavior. So, you may ignore this statement, or worse, submit to be deleted on TH-cam, which actually just proves my point - you don't want open discourse of truth. You only want to invade, and destroy anyone who doesn't lick your boots and stroke your chip on the shoulder. SOLD YOUR OWN SELVES INTO SLAVERY, THEN HAVE THE NARCISSISTIC GALL TO ACCUSE PEOPLE WITH WHITE SKIN OF THE DEED AFTER OUR GODLY CONSTITUTION FRAMED THE VERY ARGUMENT THAT FREED YOU. MEANWHILE, NOT ONE BLACK CITY ON EARTH IS DESIRABLE TO LIVE IN. NOT ONE. LORD GOD YAWEH BLESS THIS MESSAGE AND BRING AMERICA BACK TO GREATNESS. SHOW US THE WAY TO RID OURSELVES OF THE ENEMY TO OUR CONSTITUTION AND RESTORE OUR ONCE GODLY, AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE. MAGA

went on vacation, reading books is the best thing we can always do. I hated

My wife and I have been cruising steady since 2012, and the only issue we had was when we went on a cruise in 2015 with a group of 14. There were too many disagreements, people showing up late, getting lost, not properly prepared, and arguments. No fights, fortunately ..... very close, though. She is successful and driven. She gets FAMILY members telling her she “acts White” because she is successful. The rich, liberal White, elitist media has been pushing this narrative since the 70’s to try to keep minorities down and reliant on government aide which in turn ensures their vote to keep these country club, career politicians on the left in power. The media (which is over 90% rich and White) is responsible for this bs narrative that if you are successful, we’ll spoken, and a minority, you are “acting White.” They are trying to instill this mindset.

I am a Black woman from the hood who loves to travel. I went to public school, ate school lunch, at a time both my parents were addicted to crack. Lived in subsidized housing. I saw someone I know murder someone else as a teen while taking out the garbage. I could go on about the trauma in my life especially as a youth. No one can see that when they meet me. Yet so many do see my color and decide I am not worth getting to know.
Yes the fights are Black people. But it’s not playing victim to say that Black people live a different experience.
I just went to Essence festival in New Orleans and I felt the safest I have ever felt in a long time. The city was full of Black people. I never saw anything to the Carnival fight. I do believe class has something to do with it also. Also when people are abused there are consequences to that abuse. People are effected by violence. That is not to say people are victims. It is to say that reality is what reality is and how can things get better if we can’t acknowledge what it is wrong. How did we get here??
    How do we fix it?
It’s not by segregation but wisdom and most important understanding.

I'm 65. I remember segregation, the fights, and the really nasty parts of desegregation. I would swear that my relatives would have sheets hanging in the closet. I didn't understand it then, I still don't. You are a person, just like me. We had different backgrounds and I learned respect. Our senior class in high school had the first black president in the school's history. We had been through fights the years past and our group was determined to end it. How? By talking. By respect. And by getting to know each other and care about each other.
I think that the respect is a lot of it, there's a big lack of respect out there right now. It makes me sad to see the things happening and being said, I keep thinking "didn't we go through this before? Doesn't anyone remember how it was and want to do better?" We have to start by reaching out and taking personal responsibility for our actions, talk. Make friends. And don't assume anything about the other person by way of their dress, color, hair, car, or any other thing. Start with "hi".
And I would love to meet you someday, Jae. I'll be the crazy grandmother in the wheelchair with the green and purple (or some other color) who writes vampire novels and sometimes has a baby werewolf doll with me (at conventions and signings anyway.)

I'm ashamed by how sensitive some people are 😉 I know it sounds strange, but it wasn't until I was grown up and in my 20s that I realized that the racism I had faced in my youth was normal. Yes, it was normal. Not acceptable, but the fact is that racism is like slavery. Everyone "knows" it only existed in the West. Until they leave America and explore the whole world. Look at history. Even the word slave itself comes from the European "Slavic" people, the Slavs.
Every place has racism. Everyone has ancestors who were enslaved - even white slaves!
No one can hand on heart claim they have never said a racist word, or never had a racist thought at some point. If you're honest, you probably have laughed at a few jokes in secret that you wouldn't want others to know about.
It's just part of the human condition. I love all people - even those who hate me because of my race. Because, and this is the Great thing - who cares?
Who cares if some people hate me because of my skin? It doesn't affect me at all. So why care?
And if everyone has at some point laughed at a joke about race (and don't pretend you haven't), why should I pretend I'm some morally perfect being and those who laugh at such jokes should be ashamed?
It's just part of the human condition. We are all fallen. Embrace all people. Very very few people will judge you.
You are far more likely to be judged over your choice in shoes and clothing than over your skin colour.

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you broaching this topic. It’s a hot button issue for sure, and to your point, that’s because we all need to do better. You’re a million percent correct in your ability to speak on the subject, which people like me from backgrounds other than yours can’t from first-hand experience. I grew up in a poor community, and I’m white, and I know how my community can behave at its worst in troublesome situations. I absolutely applaud your approach to broaching this topic from your own experience while making salient points about other social groups as well. Your perspective carries clout, and it gives permission to others to bring their constructive experiences to bear.
I’ve been fortunate to live in some far more diverse communities, and travel broadly from the largely white rural community I grew up in. I feel like you and I can share a sentiment that the world is so much larger than that, that we all have a place in it, and many people aren’t as well prepared to abide by the expectations that environments such as cruises introduce.
Thank you for putting yourself out there once again to make the point that we have more in common than not, and that behavior is rooted in so much more than the color of someone’s skin.
I’m from the sticks in rural Nor Cal (see also: “state of Jefferson”), but as I’ve had the privilege of exploring more of the world, it’s people who look like me that are more often the reason I cringe than people who do not.
I’ve lived in Sacramento, Oakland, NYC, SF, etc… and I crave the diversity those environments afforded me. Yet in my 40+ years on this planet, the people who have caused me the most harm have looked just like me, while the people who given me the most joy have not.

From my own travel experience as a Mexican a lot of issues come from going out of your comfort zone, novel and challenging environments, fatigue and fear of embarrassment. I was in the middle of London bickering with my sister over where a bus stop is because we were struggling with a heavy schedule and a difficult bus system etc. You have all these things converge and it gets wild. We also grew up extremely disadvantaged and lived in our truck for 3 yrs in California due to housing prices and we lived in many trailers in our small home town. Over the years with experience we have become better travelers and plan things out in a more realistic way. It takes all people as the saying goes. Oh I had years of speech therapy and do not sound Mexican so I can relate to that as well.

Dude, I owe you a big apology. I was judgmental towards you last year on one of your videos. I totally understand where you are coming from regarding this touchy subject. And as a black man myself who loves to cruise (just came off the CARIBBEAN PRINCESS), I get what you’re saying. My parents were unable to afford to take my brother and I on a cruise and back then, I accepted the fact that they wouldn’t be able to. So many of our people are the first ones to earn decent salaries that allow us to take swank vacations. I was on the CARNIVAL MAGIC in August 2019 and some of the younger passengers (black teens) were dancing inappropriately on the Lido Deck. In front of older people and kids. The DJ had to stop the music for a minute to ask them to stop with the dirty dancing. I’ve also seen white kids on the CARNIVAL VICTORY (now RADIANCE) in 2001 behaving badly and the crew had to physically handle them. Sometimes I think that it’s just American culture nowadays.
And I have also been accused of trying to be white because of the way I speak and behave. You do you. Not that you need to hear that- you seem to be very confident and you don’t seek outside validation from anyone! 👍
Now I’m done ranting and I’m subscribing to this channel. Happy cruising!

On my last cruise out of California a Caucasian man shoved me in the cashier's line at the casino, looked at me at stated, "what?", like he wanted to start something. I walked back in front of him, stated to the cashier, "he jumped the line", and proceeded to take care of my business. You know. Sometimes I forget how nice it is to have the perspective of treating people as individuals, instead of groups. I do really think that's one of the biggest problems in this day and age and I often lament how many times people that would get along well don't because of all these preconceptions, racial, gender, clothing, etc. It's always refreshing to hear a perspective like this because even though the world seems to get more and more combative and divisive every day, it's good to remember that we don't have to act that way. Sometimes, I swear, it just gets depressing the number of times I've realized where the stereotypes have held me back and I'm sure they hold other people back. I've lost friends (or at least people that I thought were friends), family, lots of people because of statements about the "group" that I "belong" to and I don't even think that I have it that bad in that department. I just think the world is getting infected with a sick mindset. No one knows how to respect anyone anymore. I just think that we should all try and deprogram ourselves and treat people as blank slates until we get to know them. I get so tired of the qualifying language that you often hear people say, "well, as a white man, ..." or "as a person of color..." or whatever group someone wants to identify with. I understand why people would use those qualifying statements for certain political or societal conversations, but half the time, it's about what they like/dislike or how they feel. I find this very disturbing and try to avoid it whenever I can because I believe it's your personality and experiences that define who you are, not other people's personalities or experiences. I just want to speak to people, not monolithic representations of vast groups that no one person could ever truly understand. I often find that there's some weird robotic need for categorization among people now that kind of makes them try to not think, speak, or act for themselves and also causes them to try to re-interpret the lens of individuals, their actions, their choices, and their worth through the eyes of whatever group they belong to. I'm not even always saying that they do this in a bad ways. A lot of times there are a lot of positive stereotypes, too, but it just disconnects people. I know many of the conversations that people have had they for some reason assumed that I was wealthy because I was white, and I think this is probably one of the more positive things that someone could assume about a person. That being said, there's still a hollowness and an emptiness behind it, whether the assumption is positive or negative, because you are dealing with someone who doesn't actually want to get to know you and have ideas in their head about who they think you are that prevent that from happening. I'm really hoping we can turn the ship around, to be honest. I'd just rather have better interactions with everyone without going through the social programming of assumptions, and while I freely admit I don't have all the answers for all of society's problems, I'm not a politician and I'm not trying to save the world, unlike most people these days. I just think that the best way that we can all live our lives is to ignore these labels and live life based on our own experiences and treat people based on our experiences with them. Maybe I'm just naive, but I really do think that by being open to each other, we'll discover more friendships, opportunities, and have more good experiences to help make the world a better place. Sometimes I think that people are so focused on how other people are acting that they never actually bring any change about in the world because they never focused on how they acted. No matter how much they claim they want it. Far more good will be done in the world by the way you interact with people than how you choose to tell others to live. Still, it is a sad conversation to even need to have and I think that you really handled it with class and I appreciate the perspective in this video! One of my favorite quotes ever has stuck with me since I was a kid from the Iron Giant, "you are who you choose to be." As such, I don't choose to be white, I don't choose to be male, and I don't really want to be treated that way because it wasn't ever really a part of who I am, just the body I inhabit. I think the world could fix a lot of its problems if everyone tried to live that way and see people that way. I know it's probably not going to change, but that's the only way it ever really seems to get any better.

Stereotypes are low vibrational to say the least. Ignorance comes in ALL ethnicities, EVERY.SINGLE.ONE. You add youth, closed quarters, and liquor, violence, be it physical or intimate, are sure to follow unless it is checked quickly. Cruise ships are what needs to do better with security, period. I am a middle aged so called Black woman and one of the first cruises I went on in my 30s a young white female was sitting on the steps, with no pants or underwear on, clearly had been violated, and none of her “white “ friends were around to help her. She was obviously drunk and it was my “Black” friends and myself who got her safely to security. And for the record according to her her assailant was white. Does that mean ALL white young men are female violators? OF COURSE NOT! My point is ignorance is as individual as finger prints. I don’t want to be around this stuff no matter what ethnicity is the perpetrator. People know how to act appropriately when they know they will be handled appropriately. I will pay more for a ship that has the correct amount of security to deal with issues like these that happen on board.

How about everyone give there thumb print before boarding and match it to passport. Then if someone is banned for life it has a real consequences. Or possibly it stops wanted criminals from boarding in the first place. It definitely would let people know their actions on bourd would still follow them ( hopefully for life )
Would you give your thumb print boarding ?

The conversation needed to happen and thank you for being the one to say it! Social graces and etiquettes are learned behaviors. Yes many of us came from humble beginnings but there are many who took the time to learn how to present themselves better, speak better, behave in a way that is more socially acceptable. That doesn't mean we forgot where we came from. I have for much of my life been accused of "speaking white" or asked where I was from because of my diction and language skills. I hail from East Baltimore, Maryland and proud of it but I don't carry that as some badge of honor or disgrace. I have learned that I love the finer things in life and I pursue them. That isn't acting white. I have found myself in circles with the highly educated and they can be just as ignorant and crass as a kid from East Baltimore. So I repeat social graces and etiquettes are learned if you choose to direct your life on that path. Just because I'm from the hood doesn't mean I'm doing HOOD Shhh all the time and just because someone holds multiple degrees or comes from money doesn't make them better than me or more socially acceptable. My mom always said act like you have some sense out in these streets and don't embarrass me! I ran with that. A whole lot of other folks need that lesson. Stop acting like you don't have sense and embarrassing the folks that raised you to do better and be better. It's a choice!

I agree with a lot of what you're saying. But not having learned social graces? Some of the stuff I have seen just goes without saying. It doesn't need to be taught. Things like yelling cuss words in front of kids, throwing cups of soda across the restaurant, stealing, cutting the line, constantly acting rude to strangers, grown people screaming on the bus about small matters or slight annoyances. Do people really need to be sat down and taught that these things are wrong?

    • @lbee8247
      @lbee8247 ปีที่แล้ว

@@StopMakingEveryoneDumb it's reactive behavior practiced in a hostile environment all of ones life. Most likely from abusive and broken families where abuse is normal child rearing. People on edge not realizing they have PTSD. Prepared for battle to defend themselves in violence for no reason anymore. I have a sister who is always just waiting to be criticized with a chip on her shoulder. Ask her why she is always so angry and everything she said sounds like she is arguing and she will get defensive. She has been on guard so long she doesn't know what it would feel like to not be on guard. Expecting that everyone is out to get her or take her dignity or some part of who she is away from her. So, yes, they know it's wrong on some level but it has been the norm all their lives. Triggered people are in places of insanity for that moment. Sadly, it's no longer exclusive to poor but I see it now more then ever even in wealthy people. Just say a political name they hate and they go crazy and will throw things and curse and fight in front of children.or anyone. A distorted self defense program.

I relate to what you are saying… from another group perspective… being a Christian… and you see others from the group do and say things which are simply shameful and reflect badly on the larger group… I feel some responsibility to try and make better their actions even though I/we as a whole did nothing wrong. Its always the few bad stories that circulate. Wish we were better as humans insisting on circulating the more realistic picture. People are inherently good and try to do good and if we focus on highlighting those stories we will be a much more unified society in shutting down those few who have not gotten with the “treat others the way you want to be treated” mentality!

There are many more of us who would love to be on the same cruise with you than those that wouldn’t. Unfortunately the haters are more loud and obnoxious so you hear them over us. How boring would cruising be with only a bunch of over 60 white people like my husband and me? Nope, everyone should be welcome.

I have been in several environments where things didn't go well involving some of "our" people. And again, I state that they are a product of their environment. But once we know better, we should do better. Thanks again and I look forward to more discussion on the topic.

Thank you for addressing this, it is an uncomfortable discussion. I took my 11 year old on his first cruise this past November on the Conquest. I had to call security because there was a bloody fight outside our room at 2:30am. On another occasion there was a moment in the elevator that was a bit scary, so it was a disappointment. I noticed the bad behavior happening with both races, and it was a disappointment. Some people can’t handle their alcohol.

What a silly comment, it's groups (not individuals) that effect everybody else. In the UK only 3% of the population is black, yet they commit 80% of all street crimes, and you don't want to see them as a group. It's soft touches like you that has enabled groups like this to turn our country to shit. Nobody is saying all people within a certain group are bad, but to ignore basic statistics is just plain dumb.

A lot of commentors said he shouldn't have put his hands on her. But my take on it was that if these women hadn't been acting a fool in public, he would have never been involved. It is my understanding that I and my black-Mexican son (8) should never feel inferior to NO ONE. As he grows I continue to tell and teach him about our world and what NOT to do. We began our cruising journey about two years ago and I make sure to show him right/wrong as best as I can.
I too come from great humblings and I was the second I my family to get a grad degree. I’ve also been called “whitey” wannabe because of how I speak, interpret or see things differently.

I deal with so much racism on a daily basis that I’m numb to it. There have been several brawls on ships over the years involving white ppl, so for anyone to make this generalization it is sick. I'm so glad that you spoke on this topic. I do think when something seems to be an "us" issue that needs to be addressed "in house." I have not taken my first cruise yet (Feb 2023) but my guilty pleasure is fine dining and why I have not witnessed any physical altercations in these environments, I have witnessed some of my people not knowing how to "read the room" to understand that certain environments don't call for certain behaviors. To your point, poverty causes such limited exposure to different environments/experiences. That coupled with lack of conflict resolution skills (depending on the age group could have been learned via reality TV) is a recipe for disaster. While these things shouldn't seem like an excuse, it is a factor and I'm glad you pointed it out so I can be careful of my judgment of others. My mom always told me to not assume that everyone was raised the same and taught to know better because you don't know if they come from which speaks to what you said about people being raised and trauma. I honestly think this needs to be a more robust conversation and I would love to see other content creators share their thoughts but this was definitely a much-needed conversation for all audiences. Good job Jay!
