I love when Andrea explain to her that not all Spanish people pronunce Ibiza with the Z sound. In Spain we have a loooooot of accents and vocabulary according to where we live, and I think that is so cool and cute, the diversity of a languague!

To me it's funny, we have 2 r sounds but foreigners often just try to use the rr or rolled r everywhere.
Most Puerto Ricans don’t pronounce the “rr” sound either it’s more of a dragged sound
You can tell that Andrea is European, when Europeans teach others their languages they dont tend to gloss over little mistakes, they want to make sure you say it properly like a native so they explain it well. That can be very helpful but also a bit intimidating to new learners but it always comes from a place of love ❤️
Nah, I'm European, I teach languages and I'm not as harsh as her. You can explain the correct way to say a word without complaining about the person's pronunciation, otherwise some students would feel too intimidated and fear the speak in the language they're learning! Glossing over and being kind yet strict are two different things. But for a video like this, her teaching technique was fun.
Reminds me of my Russian classes. My teacher would sometimes get lost in the details. Like woman, I don't even know English that well!
@@lauragoreni3020 Maybe she was too harsh on Christina because she's not used to seeing others trying to learn her language.
Because, for example, here in Latin America, there are a lot of North Americans (US and Canada, Mexico excluded), and when they come here and try to speak Spanish or Portuguese - if you go to Brazil - we tend to be polite and just correct them in words that they use wrong or that they pronounced wrong, but we never try to teach them to speak like a native.
Example: If they are from the US, and they say they are _americanos_ (lit. Americans) or that they come from _América_ (lit. America(s)) we tend to tell them that they are wrong - because in Spanish they are - and that the correct forms are _estadounidense_ and _Estados Unidos_ , and that _americano_ means ‘people from the continent America’, and that _América_ means the entire continent.
If they are from both, Canada and the US, we tend to correct them in a few words, but often, we tell them that they pronounce the words correctly, obviously not like a native.
PS: Normally, if they are from Europe, they tend to know more Spanish (sometimes Portuguese) than those from the US and Canada.
@@itsgiag I’m American and I speak English and Spanish. I only refer to myself as estadounidense when I’m speaking Spanish. I have to correct people from Latin America who say it’s incorrect for us to call ourselves Americans. I noticed that you as a lot of Latin Americans refer to our country as los Estados Unidos which is fine because we also say the United States as a shortened version. However, the official name of our country is los Estados Unidos de America. Entonces la palabra America es literalmente parte del nombre de nuestro paiz entonces no es un equivocación decir en inglés que somos Americans. Gracias

Still for many Latin Americans it really wouldn’t make sense since also like you said we call you Estadounidense, since América is from Canada to Argentina and Chile. We understand that America is in the name but generally when people use América in Latin American it means all of the continent(s) and people in the US only to describe themselves

The "Z" is pronounced like "S" in: Andalusia, the Canary Islands and all of Latin America. Why? Observe the route of the Spanish conquistadors towards America : 1.Andalusian ports, 2. Canary Islands, 3. America. This is also the explanation of the most famous carnivals

In Puerto Rico they tend to use the word "Nevera" instead of the word "refrigerador".

Your Spanish is great! Just some tiny corrections. In this in this context, saying "que eres buena representante" is incorrect, or at least it sounds off. Instead, you can say "Me siento orgullosa de que seas una buena representante", or "Me enorgullece que seas una buena representante", as most of the time, when a verb is accompanied by a Que, you have to conjugate it into subjunctive.
On a similar note, while saying "Buen trabajo", isn't incorrect, and we do use it sometimes, it's way more common to say "Bien hecho", "Muy bien", or some variation depending on the country.

Besides " el refrigerador" we also can say "la nevera" for fridge as well
Depends of the country. In Costa Rica, "nevera" is the coldest place of a "refrigerador", when you put ice and ice cream.
Also, "la heladera" is how we say it in Argentina.
"Frigorífico" is what I usually say in Spain
En España, a la parte que congela de la nevera o a un aparato fabricado solo para conservar congelados los llamamos "congelador"...¡fácil!🤷🏼♂️

Exactly! I was thinking the same. As I'm Mexican-American living in Los Angeles, some of these were actually correct. Spain Spanish and Latin-American spanish has it's distinct variants and pronunciation differences. I mean even Puerto Rican spanish and Cuban spanish are different than Mexican Spanish with their own slang terms. The language for us adapts over time. Like how American english is different to British English ie "Petrol stations vs gas station" or "Color vs colour" or "aluminium vs aluminum." As we lose our connection with the dominant power during the colonial days, people tend to change the language over time. My best guess is Christina retained her knowledge of Latin America Spanish because of our influence within the U.S.A...Although most are definitely taught formal Spain Spanish in the classroom setting. In the end usually most speak in Latin American spanish.

The Spanish Castilian accent is more difficult for English speakers. With a little practice though it can be emulated. We're used to hearing the more simple Mexican accent in the states.
Simple is not the adequate word.
Yeah they don’t usually teach Castilian Spanish in the states, it’s always Mexican/South American Spanish because that is what we are used to hearing

Arroz, it's very good pronounce in the two ways, because the fist way is common in the latin american accent, and the canarias, and the second accent it´s common in the north and central of spain, and may be in equatorial guinea.
Refrigerador is difficult for me as well, and I'm spanish XD. The easy thing about spanish is that what you read, is what you pronounce. Each letter has a fixed sound (with the exceptions of C, G, Y, and R, those can have special cases). The vocals are just A, E, I, O and U, five letters five sounds.

Word of advice for English speakers learning. Most people don’t say refrigerador. We say “refri”. Basically the Spanish equivalent to fridge. Or Atleast in Mexico, it’s this way…

As Indonesian, I can more easy to pronounce Spanish language, because we often use 'R' sound and maybe that impact of Spanyol have colonized Indonesia
I think many languages have similar vowels to Spanish. Filipino, Samoan, Tongan, Maori and as you say Indonesian. Most pacific Islands in fact.

The trilling R is even difficult for some native Spanish speakers, but there are always ways to make it work even if you don't pronounce it perfectly. Perhaps, in a way, it is similar to when in English you have to make some consessions (as in elision) in order to be able to pronounce a word when the consonant clusters become too hard for the tongue to roll them out smoothly.

Most Spaniards don’t realize /θ/ is the voiceless TH sound in English for some reason
@@eddie-roo we don't have it in Spanish (as in two consonants making one sound, not very often) and usually letters are pronunced as they sound so it's normal she didn't realize if she hasn't studied the phonemes when learning English

Although I am a Russian speaker, it was not difficult for me to pronounce most of these words. Some of them are even pronounced the same way as in Spanish. Unless the accents in the words can be different. For example, Ibiza.
We also have solid "r" sounds and a "Tz" sound.
But with the word "refrigerador" it was a little complicated. In Russian, the pronunciation of this word is something between English and Spanish pronunciation.
I was able to read "Vehiculo" only because I know that in Spanish the letter "H" is mostly unreadable.
Don't mind my bragging, in any case, I wouldn't have survived in Spain because of my speech impediment. I can't pronounce the "R" sound properly in Russian (and Spanish, probably)
P.s. Chiquillo is an absolute champion. Forget that I was talking about the similarity with the Russian pronunciation))
I also find Russian pronunciation not hard since my native language is Spanish. Russian to me (especially the one from Moskva) sounds very similar to Brazilian Portuguese when I hear from the distance.

The more parentheses, the more you smile or laugh. )) It's already a reflex to put them in some sentences. We also often replace "lol" and so on with them. Keep track of the number of parentheses)))))

Idea/ιδέα is a Hellenic word and the Spanish pronunciation was 100% like we are saying it!

The L and R are very close.
Our words have similar structure.
Consonant - vowel - consonant - vowel
When in other European languages you see many consonants together like sch or ght and they have crazy pronunciation for us, because our languages are phonetic.
Each letter makes one sound, they don’t have multiple possible pronunciations depending on the word.
Spanish has 70% latin roots, 15% greek roots (imported through latin), 7% arabic roots, 5% gothic (old germanic) roots and 3% other european loans (mainly french and italian).

For example:
Φιλοσοφία / Filosofía became Philosophy in English but in Spanish they pronouncing it exactly like we do in Hellenic!

The z's would be incorrect for Andrea because she's from Spain and the z or almost th sound is very emphasized, while in latin america we just pronounce it like an s, so for me her pronunciation of arroz is correct.
She was teaching her the spaniard dialect so Andrea would be correct, but I agree and disagree. I also feel it's better for a foreigner to focus on an accent and go with it, so any variations can be considered wrong pronunciation in that instance, but I believe they are not wrong in any way. They just don't fit there.
También en Andalucía diríamos 'Arros' o 'Arroh'. Pero ella está tratando de enseñarle el español más estándar de España.

The way I was taught to remember to do the trill (tongue roll) was to do a “d” and roll it.

Spanish from Spain is the only one that pronounces "z" like that... Christina probably mostly heard Mexican Spanish in the states (especially in the south). And the "z" sound is more similar to "s" or even how English speakers would say the "z" sound... It was definitely an adjustment for me when I moved to Spain, learning the difference. And now back in the states, Mexicans I speak with in Spanish get confused by my pronunciation sometimes. Because I essentially learned Spain Spanish, haha... Anyway... It's cool seeing Spain Spanish get represented in this channel! And Andrea seems fun, haha.
Moreover not everyone in Spain say the "z", I wouldn't say "zapato" but "sapato" so yeah the z is tricky

Chrstina actually has a great pronunciation, if she decides to learn spanish she can fool anyone in just a month by learning few sentences. She is using spanish accent but the R and the Z she used is quite well compared with other spanish accents she pronunced ARROZ terrific just like in my community, Im impressed.
I felt some of the words were spot on when hearing them, but she is being judged by a Spaniard, as opposed to someone from Mexico or Peru.
