- The most successful American performers of the 1960s, the Supremes for a time rivaled even the Beatles in terms of red-hot commercial appeal, reeling off five number one singles in a row at one point. Critical revisionism has tended to undervalue the Supremes' accomplishments, categorizing their work as more lightweight than the best soul stars (or even the best Motown stars), and viewing them as a tool for Berry Gordy's crossover aspirations. There's no question that there was about as much pop as soul in the Supremes' hits, that even some of their biggest hits could sound formulaic, and that they were probably the black performers who were most successful at infiltrating the tastes and televisions of middle America. This shouldn't diminish either their extraordinary achievements or their fine music, the best of which renders the pop vs. soul question moot with its excellence.
The Supremes were not an overnight success story, although it might have seemed that way when they began topping the charts with sure-fire regularity. The trio that would become famous as the Supremes -- Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard -- met in the late '50s in Detroit's Brewster housing project. Originally known as the Primettes, they were a quartet (Barbara Martin was the fourth member) when they made their first single for the Lupine label in 1960. By the time they debuted for Motown in 1961, they had been renamed the Supremes; Barbara Martin reduced them to a trio when she left after their first single.
The Supremes' first Motown recordings were much more girl group-oriented than their later hits. Additionally, not all of them featured Diana Ross on lead vocals; Flo Ballard, considered to have as good or better a voice, also sang lead. Through a lengthy series of flops, Berry Gordy remained confident that the group would eventually prove to be one of Motown's biggest. By the time they finally did get their first Top 40 hit, "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes," in late 1963, Ross had taken over the lead singing for good.
Ross was not the most talented female singer at Motown; Martha Reeves and Gladys Knight in particular had superior talents. What she did have, however, was the most purely pop appeal. Gordy's patience and attention paid off in mid-1964, when "Where Did Our Love Go" went to number one. Written by Holland-Dozier-Holland, it established the prototype for their run of five consecutive number-one hits in 1964-1965 (also including "Baby Love," "Stop! In the Name of Love," "Come See About Me," and "Back in My Arms Again"). Ross' cooing vocals would front the Supremes' decorative backup vocals, put over on television and live performance with highly stylized choreography and visual style. Holland-Dozier-Holland would write and produce all of the Supremes' hits through the end of 1967.
Not all of the Supremes' singles went to number one after 1965, but they usually did awfully well, and were written and produced with enough variety (but enough of a characteristic sound) to ensure continual interest. The chart-topping (and uncharacteristically tough) "You Keep Me Hangin' On" was the best of their mid-period hits. Behind the scenes, there were some problems brewing, although these only came to light long after the event. Other Motown stars (most notably Martha Reeves) resented what they perceived as the inordinate attention lavished upon Ross by Gordy, at the expense of other artists on the label. The other Supremes themselves felt increasingly pushed to the background. In mid-1967, as a result of what was deemed increasingly unprofessional behavior, Ballard was replaced by Cindy Birdsong (from Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles). Ballard become one of rock's greatest tragedies, eventually ending up on welfare, and dying in 1976.
After Ballard's exit, the group would be billed as Diana Ross & the Supremes, fueling speculation that Ross was being groomed for a solo career. The Supremes had a big year in 1967, even incorporating some mild psychedelic influences into "Reflections." Holland-Dozier-Holland, however, left Motown around this time, and the quality of the Supremes' records suffered accordingly (as did the Motown organization as a whole). The Supremes were still superstars, but as a unit, they were disintegrating; it's been reported that Wilson and Birdsong didn't even sing on their final hits, a couple of which ("Love Child" and "Someday We'll Be Together") were among their best. In January 1970. Jean Terrell replaced Ross, and the group continued through 1977. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

Love the opening of the routine in silhouette! And I love these performances where you can hear all three voices in harmony: Diana's mezzo soprano, Mary's alto, and Flo's soprano. You can really see (and hear) what all three brought to the performance and what made the Supremes great!
My first crush was Miss Ross! Grew up in L.A. where the entertainment industry blew up! Flo is so fine in this video and my all time favorite line is “Flo she don’t know, cause the boy she loves is a Romeo” ..... break out in goosebumps every time I hear it ✌️

This song IMMORTALIZED the Supremes as all 3 names were mentioned in the lyrics. After Flo left in July 1967 this song was NEVER sung again by the Supremes

The thing that really captivates the audience with this performance other than their obvious lyrical talent is the opening sequence where they all are in dark silhouette with their choreographed feet/hand movements building to the song. It's really quite clever and so cute and alluring. They come across as very classy, feminine like models on a runway with this opening dance step clouded in silhouetted darkness that just draws you in. I'm so impressed with this particular performance.

June 12, 1965 - The Supremes scored their fifth consecutive US No.1 single (they were the first American group to accomplish this feat), when “Back In My Arms Again”, went to the top of the charts.
Listening to this special genre of music makes me glad to live in Michigan.

Before this, the last time the Supremes were on Hullabaloo was when "Come See About Me" was at the top on the charts. They had (at that point) three gold records in the US, and two in the UK. (TV shows never exactly have been fonts of knowledge.)
Diana’s singing is amazing but my eyes were on Florence and Mary throughout this performance. What a brilliant Intro starting with the silhouette of the beautiful tall hour- glass figure of Florence gliding out of the dark shadows with a graceful step backward and then a forward step to the side, followed by another step forward crossing their feet with a twirl into a turn and twirling round with swaying shoulders, swinging hips and hands on hips by Florence and hands outstretched gracefully in a ballerina pose by Gorgeous Mary. Then sashaying forward to their microphones in a catwalk before half turning and finally dipping sideways into an’’ Ooooooh’’ with arms outstretched in the air and their backs facing each other before Diana launched into singing. These women were the epitome of beauty, grace and class with each bringing something unique to the group as a whole with Florence’s booming back vocals, Mary’s excellent choreography and Diana's singing. All were gorgeous women but MARY was stunning !!!

I can't help but smile ear to ear when I watch and listen to this video. Those ladies were pure magic together and while it lasted Flo/Diana/Mary was the best ensemble of the many Supremes lineups.

As a young white boy, The Supremes epitomized to me both beauty and glamour, I'm glad that I was exposed to such positive black role models through all of the Motown's super talented groups, it affected my view of black people for life.
Some of the best choreography they got. What distinguished them from the other groups was their glamour, their strong focus and above all their energy. Everytime they appeared, they had their noses wide open (to quote a lyric from a Tina Turner song), with everything in place to the max. Ross was the magic touch; she had a quality like no one else. But it was three girls the world fell in love with, not one, and in fact when Ross got top billing the record sales became wobbly.

I'm not an abject "Flo-lover", but she really DID look the best when they did that silhouette thing at the beginning. And even though she shared a mic, you could really hear her. And when they did that line about "and Flo, she don't know", her expression was priceless.

And in All That Glittered My Life With The Supremes, writer Tony Turner stated that that "LOOK" was part of the staging for the show. Why else would the camera suddenly move to Flo and Mary it was all well rehearsed to look genuine

Thanks for posting this video. It sure would be nice just to view the video without all the negative comments about who backstabbed who, who slept with who, which Supreme sounded better/had the better range. As a person who wasn't born when the Supremes were in their heyday, I prefer to keep these three Divas in that sacred place/space of 'pathfinders', 'trailblazers' and yes Prime(ettes) as well as SUPREME. I have so much love AND respect for Diana, Mary AND Flo.

As a dancer, my favourite Supremes song of the Diana Ross era with its insistent beat and it was good to see the interaction towards the end - real performing and some incredible looks, in both senses of the word.
They were so great. I think this is their best song along with “Come See About Me” and “Can’t Hurry Love” and “Stop in the Name of Love.”

Florence has always been my favorite supreme
This has always ranked as one of my favorite Supreme songs...sort of overlooked with their other hits. Diana delivers the solo perfectly but the interplay of background vocals is just amazing. Given the date of the Hullabaloo broadcast, I was probably in my living room watching on a 25" (huge at the time) B&W TV. It was the '60's and Hullabaloo (and Shindig) was required viewing for every teenager at the time. What a time...turn on the radio and hear everything from Motown super stars like this, the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who, Beach Boys, Mama & Papas, Dylan, Byrds and … and … Feel very fortunate to have grown up then even with all the social upheaval.
Update 2024 - Just came back to listen to this again (for the 1,000,000th time) - God, they were great!

Two weeks later on June 12th it peaked at #1 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Hot Top 100...
On the R&B chart; the #1 records before and after it were both Motown songs, "I'll Be Doggone" by Marvin Gaye preceded it and "I Can't Help Myself" by the Four Tops succeeded it...

Another #1 hit for The Supremes in June 1965. It also hit #1 on the Rhythm & Blues charts and the Cashbox charts. It hit #40 in the United Kingdom.
On this day in 1965 {May 11th} the Supremes performed "Back In My Arms Again" on the NBC-TV program 'Hullabaloo'...
Eleven days earlier on May 1st it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and on June 12th it peaked at #1 {for 1 week} and spent 11 weeks on the Top 100...
It was their last of 5 straight #1 records, and during the year 1965 alone they had four #1 records {the others were "Come See About Me", "Stop! In The Name of Love", and "I Hear A Symphony"}...

The hook in this is the same as in The Isley Brothers' "This Old Heart", which was actually originally written for (and later re-recorded by) The Supremes. Both songs were written by the classic Motown composer team Holland-Dozier-Holland in 1965 and 1966.

I went out thrifting and came across this in vinyl for less that a dollar R10 (ZAR). The seller's didn't even know this is fire. I got gold for nothing.
I was playing this video and my great nephew came in. He is in college and said as he pointed to Flo..."Auntie dayum ,who is that? She is stacked!"... I bust out laughing.

Speaking of mothers, I remember when I watched this show with my mother as it was being broadcast on television in 1965. My mother thought Flo was very funny. My mother laughed so hard during this number because it appeared that Flo was mocking the song and Diana. My mother was a FLO fan and never made any comments regarding Diana or Mary. For my mother FLO was the attraction. I could never understand that as Diana was the lead singer.
