    Fantastic video. Love how you also draw the diagrams which show such a clear path of how the belts run. I'm 88. I did this on my old 1987 MTD, but this 46" 3 blade deck is a different world. Thank you so much for the excellent job- and the tips!!!

    Purchased this to replace a guide pulley th-cam.com/users/postUgkxO9seYZjlnuP5UvMkb7osQW3WxPVeSnPk on our John Deere x304 snowblower. As I stated in the title, it is just about perfect. The stock pulley has a spacer at the bottom. I used four washers to emulate said spacer, and it works perfectly now. Great product, and great price especially if compared to typical JD prices.

    For anyone else wanting to replace the drive belt - you don't have to unbolt & slide the engine back lol! Just remove the pulley shaft from underneath. A single bolt secures the drive belt pulley and cutting deck pulley to the engine drive shaft, by removing that bolt the pulleys drop down, then you can easily remove the drive belt as it clears those metal tabs keeping the belt on the pulley.

    The PTO pulley will remove easily but I only had to slide it down enough to get the belt on. All you need to do is lift the hood, take the plastic plug from the flywheel retaining nut, use a breaker bar and socket to hold motor still, loosen the PTO pulley retaining nut, then pry the PTO pulley down. I used the breaker bar.

    I was able to replace the "top' belt (transmission) WITHOUT having to remove the LARGE pulley. I did have to drop the engine pulley to remove the drive belt. Maybe I was lucky, or because the mower was a 2005 model. And no, I did not harm the belt in any way, otherwise the belt would not have lasted for 10yrs. Happy mowing!!

    I think you did a great job w/ your video partner . It’s not a hard job but damnit I’d rather just buy a new lawnmower every 10 years or so , but , I’m poor as crap so I’ll be doing this BS.. LOL .. Thank you for sharing

    Piece of cake -you don't need to do all this - just take the guards off, including slaken the ones alongside the motor drive, use an 8inch
    bottle jack to push and slacken the tensioning pulley, a block of wood against the back wheel helps - and put the jack under the pulley onto its bracket, extend the jack and slip the belt on. You may need to guide the belt around the motor drive, and on mine there is an extra guide pulley, belt goes inside.. Cheers all.

    My lower transmission belt keeps riding up into the upper transmission belt pulley, damn that is frustrating, any idea how to adjust that pulley?

  • @reelfunnyfishing651
    @reelfunnyfishing651 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good video, I need to figure how to adjust tension on pto belt. I share your frustration with belts period...

  • @tombouie
    @tombouie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Well Done, oh on those thin metal keepers/tabs/guards/etc that prevent you from just removing the belt from the pto pulley:
    Moving the engine is a lot effort. Also unless you have a good impact wrench, on a Troy-bilt pony that pto pulley retaining bolt is almost impossible to get off.
    Sooooooo I just bent those thin metal keepers/tabs/guards/etc just enough to get the belt off & bent them back afterwards and I'm cutting grass again.

    At the 2:40 mark is that nut reverse thread?

    • @Ryanpant8
      @Ryanpant8  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the delayed response, I don't think that it is a reverse thread. I took it off with an electric impact gun. It looks like pulley is trying to turn counter clockwise at first, then when I let off on the impact gun and the nut is loose, the pulley snaps back in a clock wise direction. My fingers in the way don't help the view either.

    Don't unbolt the engine, get a shifter and bend those pesky little belt-retaining tabs out of the way. You can bang em back into shape when you're done.

    • @JodBronson
      @JodBronson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Correct! He can also remove the pulley and drop it a bit. Take or Put the Belt on, then tighten.

      @Federalist2159 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Way easier to drop the pulley

      Kirk George , yes, just undo that nut and drop the pulley

  • @Federalist2159

    Good video. Would be easier to unbolt the PTO pulley. One bolt slide the assembly down slide belt on tightener up

    Be Nice If the Mower i working On had the Cute Little info Sticker under the hood Or Any where. My Engine to Deck Drive belt had 1 missing Pulley as well . so much for universality in the same series. & googling the belt diagram was None such.

    i have problems with my MTD RS115/96B its very slow moving and don't cut until the depth lever is on low and then it hardly turns the blades any ideas bud

    • @Ryanpant8
      @Ryanpant8  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My guesses would be 1 the belts are old/worn 2 belts are the wrong size 3 a tensioner spring came unmounted 4 the belts are not routed correctly. The symptoms you are describing sound most like loose belts that are not gripping the pulleys fully. By contrast undersize, overtight belts will engage the blades when the deck is lowered, even if the PTO is not engaged and the blades will have trouble stopping. I͟F͟ you replace the belts use the numbers under the hood. Taking them to a store and using a belt gauge is a good way to buy the wrong belt. Also belt numbers can change over time and different manufacturers may use different numbers for the same belt. It helps to have the internet available to cross reference them.

    Why not remove the PTO shaft to get the front pulley instead of undoing the engine? Not talking bad just honestly curious

    • @Ryanpant8
      @Ryanpant8  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's been a couple of years but it seems like that shaft does not come off when you take the bolt out of the bottom pulley, it seems like it does nothing to loosen the shaft at all, just the bottom pully comes off. I could be wrong. I can't quite recall, but it seems like there was a problem. My nature is to be lazy and take the path of least resistance. If you try to remove it, please reply or leave a comment or make a video and I'll add an in video link for it.

      @@Ryanpant8 right on man like i said no judgement here! Learning just like everyone else. I removed the bolt on the bottom of pto with an impact and slid the shaft down. Made life 100 times easier than moving the engine. However all mowers are different so it may not be the case here

    • @Ryanpant8

      All I talk about in the first two mins is making sure that you get the right belt Which seems mundane, but is extremely important. After that is when I address tricky/problem areas. I put times right in the video description so people just jump to the section they need.
