Hi Mike. You have a great mind for troubleshooting , I love watching that. Those belts are for the older MTDs. You'll get er driving right in no time. Thumbs up as always my friend
Hello there Dave!!! Thanks for the nice comment buddy!!! I figured these belts were not right for a couple of reasons. One: they are too wide and two: they are rubber sided. Being used on a movable sheave pully with rubber sides just didn't make sense to me. It's a recipe for quick wear and burning rubber. I could smell the rubber burning too. Anyways with the new belt on the main drive and the old belt on the variable speed drive, it is working a lot better so when the new belts come in I hope that will be the ticket!!! Thanks bunch for tuning in and take 'er easy!!!
Your a pretty sharp cookie! This was a very interesting and informative video. Every time we tackle these type task and things don’t work exactly right at first we end up learning more about how the machine actually works.
How's she goin'? Well that's for sure eh!!! If it works you use it, if it doesn't work you have to find out why and that's where the learning takes place!!! These belts were marked with the matching part number, but they weren't an exact replacement. I hope the new belts I ordered are. We'll see eh!!1 Thanks for tuning in and commenting. Take care!!!
How's she goin'? I'm not sure it'll be like new, but it's a fun project. I guess it's sort of like your Miata, but on a much smaller scale eh!! Good day eh!!! There is a lot of little things that need attention/fixin' on this little tractor. It's a fun project though. Great to have you commenting and watching Take care!!!
We are always having belt issues with our equipment. It is surprising how much difference a B section belt makes when it should be an A section, for example. Some of our older equipment has non standard belt lengths and the originals are no longer available, finding something that works in that case is fun. It was great that you could take the panels off to see what what happening, it is not possible to do that on our Westwood which has the same tranmission which is not helpful. Despite the work needed to take the cover off I really like your approuch as it is good to understand how it was designed to work. Great job getting to the bottom of the issue
Hello there Joseph!!! Thanks for your comment. I am learning a lot about belts working on the tractor that's for sure. It's a journey of discovery!!! It seems to me there are plenty of places to order replacement belts, and the descriptions are all different for what could be the same belt. You need to know what to look for and if that info isn't in the description, I have learned to stay away from that part!!! LOL Thanks for tuning in and take 'er easy!!!
We have had a couple Troy-Bilt (MTD with different paint) mowers with the varable pulley drive. They do okay mowing, but any load and the belt chews up. I found that if the belt is too deep in the variable pulley it rides on the shaft and loses grip. You have to run mid range to high to make the belts last. Also towing anything like a lawn roller will chew up the variable pulley's belt. I was mowing 2 1/2 acres and for a whilewhile I was working on the road we hired a guy to use our mower and mow our yard. He had his daughter use ours while he mowed the neighbors yard with his. It got a lot of wear that sure didn't help. I ended up changing the variable drive belt every year for the 14 years I kept it running. Geared transmissions are better for hauling or pushing loads. Using it as a light duty Doodlebug should be okay.
How's she goin'? The variable speed sheaved pulleys are not good on belts. But having having said that there are many ATV's and Snow mobiles that operate with variable speed pulleys and the belts last for years on them. But, I have to say, I'm not a fan of this type of transmission. But since that's what was on this MTD that's what I ended up with. I hope the new (and proper sized) belts work out, but we'll see. Thanks for taking some time from the bathroom project to watch and comment. Take care!!!
I think the belts you reordered will be the right ones especially if they have the same part number, can’t wait to see 👍🏻. Have a great week Mike 🙋🏼♂️👍🏻🙂
How's she goin'? Here's the thing Luc, the first belts I ordered had the same part number!! But when I went back and looked the width was shown as wider than the original belt. Like I mentioned in another comment, I jump too quick at the price and don't read the description far enough past the price to really know what I'm ordering!!! LOL Thanks for watching and take care!!
Hey Grampie another informative video, looks like you are having fun with your new ride. I would thumbs up you a dozen times if I could, but I can only do it once. All the best.

I've got one of those rider's with the speed pedal. Bought new belts and ready to install. Glad you showed how to adjust the speed pedal. Hopefully I'll get a little more speed out of it. Mine also has a granny low, a high forward , and reverse. I picked it up for a few bucks and it had no name on it, except for the sticker under the hood saying it's an MTD with a 23 HP Briggs and Stratton V twin. So far I've had to replace the carburetor and fuel pump and new tires all around. Servicing the belts next and no need to work on the deck, because it doesn't have one, so I'm just going to use it as a mule. I did notice it needs a new crankshaft seal, but for now I just want to see how it performs ....❤
How's she goin'? Sounds like you are using your machine for the same reason I got mine, not as a ride on mower but just as a ride on!! I wish mine was a V-twin. Those engines are nice and smooth. Mine is a Kohler 17 and it's pretty rough and noisy. I'm having a problem right now with the coil. When the engine warms up and with the hot weather, the coil shorts out and kills the spark. I'm hoping a new coil is the answer. Thanks a lot for dropping by the channel and I hope you can come back again soon!! Take 'er easy and good luck with your machine!!!

Hello Grampie. The new belts should work out good for you and it was a good idea to take the pan off to do a full inspection. Good luck and I enjoyed the video!!!
How's she goin'? These belts were shown on Amazon as the part number required, but they were not the correct belts. When I checked the description it gave the measurement's, so I messed up here. Oh well, now I know. But the latest belts I ordered are supposed to be the right ones. I checked the full description this time around!!! Thanks a lot for tuning in and take care!!!
I call those a snowmobile drive. I have never been a fan of the variable belt. Love the white board today. OEM belts. I have 2 John Deere tractors and they HAVE to have the John Deere OEM belts.
Hello there Bruce!!! I have to say I'm not a fan of variable speed belts either. It seems to me that if you design something that need to 'slip' to work, it's bound to wear out faster. I think you're onto something with OEM belts. I have ordered another set and we'll see how they do. It's fun trying this and that to see what I can do to make this little tractor work better and better!!! Thanks for tuning in and commenting. Take care!!
Mike go back through you video. Their is a spring missing from that idle arm were you adjusted that jam nut. Their is a hole on that arm at the end of it with a place just above it were a spring is supposed to go. Looks like it is something similar to the two just above it. If you look over your video footage you will see what I mean.
How's she goin'? I think I see what you mean Vicky!!! Thanks for pointing that out. First thing tomorrow I'll be on that like a mad dog on a bone!!! Thanks for tuning in and take care!!
Good day eh!! That's the thing Marc, the part number on these belts did match what was in the book. But when I read the description on Amazon a bit further than the part number (and the price), I saw where the width was shown as 5/8. The OE belt is only 1/2. Not a big difference but big enough I think. We'll see for sure when the new belts get here!!! I appreciate you watching and commenting. Take care!!!
Good video helps me and more and more I realize what a waste of money MTD equipment is! They are cheep to buy, extremely expensive when it comes to changing belts…both the mower drive and the ground drive! On an AYP/Husquavarna I can have both changed in the time it takes to change the mower drive belt on the MTD and I don’t have to use the expensive OEM belts!
How's she goin'? This old MTD had no deck on it when I bought it. I just use it as a ride to get from here to there around the property!! But the belts sure don't last. I wonder if OE belts would last longer? I'll never know because I won't pay the price they want!! I have a Husqvarna mower as well and I like it a lot more than this unit!! Thanks for the comment and take 'er easy!!
I like your little spring tool! Did you invent that? That new belt will solve your problem. Guaranteed! An inch difference is huge in that application. Cheers!
Hey there Mike!!! No I can't take credit for that 'spring puller' tool. A buddy of mine made it and gave it to me one time. I use it a lot. It's very handy when removing a spring. You can remove the spring 'under control' so to speak!!! LOL Thanks a lot for tuning in and commenting. Take care!!!
Hey Mike if that MTD gets stolen , you can easily prove it’s yours. Your fingerprints are on every square inch. LOL it will be running smooth in no time. Stay Safe. Cheers. Rick
Hello there Rick!!! This MTD is turning into a pretty fun project and the more I look at it the more things I either need to fix or want to fix!!! Still lots to do but no show stoppers yet!!! Thanks a lot for watching and commenting. Have a great week!!!

I think you should leave the fenders right off, and just strap a lawn chair on there instead. LOL. Sometimes belts can give you a pain in the butt. I'm sure you'll figure it out. Take care
How's he goin'? Ha Ha Ha!! The tractor looks different without the body parts. It looks like a little Formula I car with the hood off!! LOL Thanks for tuning in John and take care!!!
Hey Mike. Looks like I got unsub'd from you. I haven't had that happen in a long time but I redid the sub and bell. Well ole son, bit by bit you are getting this beastie tuned up better than new eh. One nice thing I see is all the pulleys have regular alternator bearings. Yo can get them for around $10.00 or less pretty much everywhere. These belt drive systems drive on the sides of the belt. (I am sure you know that.) Once they wear enough that they wear in so they are touching the bottom of the V grooves they are done. If they sit too proud they catch right away. That causes no feathering of the system thus the lurch. I have had folks come to me with this problem for years. Having the service/parts booklet is something that is often lost or thrown out. Only then can the right cross section of belt can be found. There are 3 or 4 different types to choose from but only the right ones will work as they should eh. One thing about you good sir is you won't quit until things are as you want them too. The curse of curses eh. LOL. Take care bud.
How's she goin'? Thanks for the visit Phillip!! First off I don't use this machine for mowing anymore. I took the mower deck off and I use this machine mainly for a yard tractor to help me get around the property. I also did a good cleaning on the machine as I was reworking it into a yard machine. Thanks for tuning in and I hope you can come back again soon!! Take care!!!
How's she goin'? Sorry Scott, I don't have a part number. What I did was measure the length of the belt and the width. Then searched Amazon till I found ones similar. Thanks for tuning and take care!!
Looks like you are using a B belt when you need an A. I am not sure but I think the pitch is different as well. Changing those belts out is the worst job on those tractors. Took me 2 hours to do my Ford. A frustrating job. Stevo
How's she goin'? You know when I was having trouble with this belt I thought the same thing, that I need a Type A belt. But when I checked the spec and measurements and compared the part numbers, it's a B-belt that is suppose to go here. Even though the B belt doesn't seem to work very well. Maybe it's because it's new. We'll see anyways. I have 2 B belts in place now and we'll see how they work out!!! Thanks for the observation Stevo and for watching. Have a great week and Happy Anniversary!!!

How's she goin'? I think I see what you mean Vicky!!! Thanks for pointing that out. First thing tomorrow I'll be on that like a mad dog on a bone!!! Thanks for tuning in and take care!!
Belts can be so deceiving to match up! With the part number I'm sure you'll do just fine👍
Take care Mike✌️
I would have ordered all new springs for sure
Rusty springs break and cause trouble
Good day eh!!! That's a good idea. These springs were rusty and old for sure but seemed in pretty good shape so I just reused them. But changing them out would be a better solution. Thanks for the visit and take 'er easy!!
Awesome Grampie《☆》Real headscratcher👍😁 Reminds me of the mechanical aptitude tests. If pulley A turns CCW What direction will pulley Z rotate if belt #4 is twisted into a figure 8 ? 🖖👽🍗◇¿.🌴◇:*:◇🌴Greetings from⛾Florida🤳my good friend😎🎱☮🔊🖖👍
Hey there Bdog!!! Ha Ha Ha!!! I laughed when I read your comment. For a while I worked as a technical recruiter and had to administer these types of tests. It was a fun time!!! Thanks for tuning in and take care!!
AllWAYS check for warn out pulleys
Belt has to make correct contact
How's she goin'? That's always a good plan for sure. Thanks for the reminder and thanks too for dropping by. Take 'er easy!!!
Looks really clean. How do you keep it so clean and use it. ???
I guess that’s one way of doing it
How's she goin'? Thanks for the visit Phillip!! First off I don't use this machine for mowing anymore. I took the mower deck off and I use this machine mainly for a yard tractor to help me get around the property. I also did a good cleaning on the machine as I was reworking it into a yard machine. Thanks for tuning in and I hope you can come back again soon!! Take care!!!
Do you have the part number for that belt?
