  • Let me be clear. I LOVE Lyle Hess boats, and the Bristol Channel Cutter is one of my favorite designs by him. This vessel, Sun Star, is a 1979 Bristol Channel Cutter that has been abandoned for a long time in a small boatyard in Florida. Normally, these boats are worth between 50,000 to 100,000 dollars depending on condition, so would it be worth it to restore this abandoned boat to her former glory? I think so, but only for the right person willing and able to put in the work. Personally, I think the right person needs to come by, truck the boat to their own property, and work on it as a passion project. Unfortunately, that's not us right now (though we did think about it!).
    What do you think? Is she a diamond in the rough or a wreck only worth the money you'll get from scrapping her? Leave a comment below!

    Before you judge the asking price, please do your research on Lyle Hess Bristol Channel Cutters and look at what they go for in varying conditions. You can't compare a BCC to a Catalina 30. It's apples and oranges. Yes, the price is probably too high, but that's also the price with the new engine. Keep in mind that used monohull sailboats almost never sell for the asking price and that the seller is very willing to negotiate. I think he'll consider any reasonable offers, so you might get this boat for much less then 35k without the engine.
    Asking Price: $35,000 including new Yanmar diesel, but willing to negotiate

    I have a feeling this will sit here till the end of time with an asking price of $35,000. It is a well designed boat. No doubt about that. Top dollar for a boat like this is $100k. That leaves $65k to make this into the absolutely best one anyone’s ever seen. Not going to happen, even not including all the labor that’d go into the project. You’d essentially have to work for free for 3 to 5 years and that makes no sense. Salvage it for $500 for a token amount and then it’d be possible. I do like the layout and the design. It’s not a boat I’ve seen, but I certainly would be interested in one in better shape. Thank you for the tour.

      I doubt one has sold for $100,000 in the last 15 years the only one interested in these boats are young folks who are on a budget, and want a small capable cruiser. Good ones are selling for well under $50,000.

    • @rabbitline
      @rabbitline 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      $65k? HA! Try doubling or even tripling that. Yards would charge upwards of $13-15k just for an Awlgrip paint job. And painting has to be done inside: dust, pollen etc can easily foul a spray job up. And it costs $ bucks just to move in into a shop, let alone the cost to rent a shop or have it done professionally. The wood work would be twice that, just the exterior. (have you priced teak and mahogany lately $$$$) Fabricating a rudder? Lines plans are available for this boat, but that's a big job too. ALL wiring would have to be redone, all chain-plates would need to be replaced (without even looking at them) Mast, boom, standing rigging? Cape George yachts has the moulds and rights I believe. How about recaulking every hatch and port? Bow Sprit? I just had one made for my Tayana 37...$6k!!!! Was this guy just trying to recoup his original cost of a bare hull? Or is the $35k the money he owes the yard for storage?
      No matter how you cut it, this seller is in dreamland to think he could even get 1/10th of that asking price. I'm surprised the broker trying to sell it even wasted an afternoon filming and editing the video. He should be embarrassed.

  • @homer5802

    So, I think to do a tour like this was great for any of us who have ever looked at an old abandon boat and wondered... Being ignorant to boat construction - if I had say $30,000 and could get someone to build me a fiberglass hull, deck and ballasted keel of some "best" design, would I get just as much boat in a brand new hull? I'd love to see a Learning the Lines new video on "the cost of renovation" maybe interviewing people who are renovating pieces of their boats, what they decided to take on, and how much it cost in time and money. Sort of mini tours of several boats with the data from their owners, or the working experts at the boat yards.

    $35k sounds WAY too high for that boat. Like you said, it'll likely need to be stripped to a bare hull, even partially. Lyle Hess designed some beautiful boats, like my Nor'sea 27. I'd consider a project boat like this in need of a full rebuild but I've been trying to find something closer to 40'... Now, if only I had the money to actually do it.

    What a shame. Bristol Channel Cutters are stunningly beautiful well built boats. I can’t imagine letting one go to rot like this. I would imagine that something catastrophic happened to the owner/family to let her fall into decay.
    She is definitely worth the cost of the new Yanmar engine. Not much more. I can’t wrap my head around a project of that magnitude. This has to be a $75,000 rebuild.
    I spent $10,000 in upgrades for my boat this winter, which doubled her resale value. I did most of the work myself and a few hours of labor from a marine electrician.

    From purely a financial standpoint, this is a non-starter. There's a close-to-mint condition one on the west coast that is selling for something short of $50K, so that's your ceiling after a refit. Even with a TON of sweat equity, you are looking at least $50K, probably closer to $75K, in materials to bring this boat back. Even if you got it for free, you will be under water (no pun intended). It's easy to get romanced by a classic boat with a lot of pedigree, but if you are going to invest $75K in a refit plus whatever you end of paying to purchase this (assume $15K), you can buy a very nice bluewater boat of similar size for that amount and sail away right away as opposed to investing 2-3 years of your time. But, if you really love the idea of having a BC Cutter, I'm not going to stand in your way. But I would urge anyone to consider the value of their time before jumping into a project like this. You don't get those years back.

However, because it was in really rough shape I offered only the value of the lead ballast which I figured I could at least salvage to break even if the project went south. Luckily the boat is beginning to shape up after untold hours of hard work and plenty of cash to replace or repair everything. With a restoration of this kind you pretty much have to get the boat for next to nothing because of the time and money needed to get it back to sailing shape.

    A project waaaay out of my league but I appreciate learning that boats in the absolute worst conditions can still be salvageable.

    Classic design is great, this boat with something in its day! It must’ve been beautiful below at some point in his life but In its current condition left wide open to the weather Free is almost too much price to pay.

    INSANITY! BCCs are great blue water sailors, but that one is a goner. I wouldnt take it free even with the yanmar.

    A friend of mine built a beautiful BC28 and they are tough, seaworthy, sail well, and have good resale - but there is NO ROOM inside. Nor room on deck for much of a dinghy - and overall length due to the sprit and rudder makes you pay moorage on a much longer slip. I think there are much better boats/designs that would make better resurrection projects.

    • @spankmeairlines
      @spankmeairlines 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah ... BCC is a 28' boat with the moorage cost of a 38'.

    • @markgearhart6004
      @markgearhart6004 ปีที่แล้ว

      Room for what? Fine for single handing. If you have one then chances are good that you are out, and not stuck in a slip or on a mooring ball. The advantage of a mint condition BCC is that many waterfront homes love to have a BCC tied up to their pier. I know this. I've had my BCC for the past 27 years.

    Fiberglass version of Tally Ho? Maybe not, but I could see the diamond. My guess is the "New" Yanmar is worth $18000+. I would offer a $1 and tell them to keep the motor. I would most likely put something COMPLETELY different in anyways. Thanks for sharing. So many boats, so little money (in my pocket).

    Fantastic design, being a fibre glass copy of the Bristol Channel Pilot cutter, a boat design evolved through hundreds of years in the most demanding seas. As for value? Pretty much treat it as a hull just out of the mould as long as the fibreglass is in good condition. Fit out would be hundreds of thousands

  • @patraic5241
    @patraic5241 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    $35k for that wreck? Nope. More like $3k if that. I'm a little surprised that they don't just let someone tow it off so they don't have to pay storage fees anymore. Anyone who takes this on needs to have some serious shipwright skills. There's one for sale right now in Washington State for $51.5k in great shape. Beautiful little boat.

    This right here is why you should never just run out and buy a project boat without doing a lot of research ahead of time. This was probably a high potential boat when the person who started repairs bought it, but quickly realized that there is no such thing as a cheap boat.
    35 grand is a ridiculous asking price for this. It's basically an empty hull. I wouldn't go a penny higher than 10, but I would likely start much lower than that with my first offer, lol. You could spend 50 grand on that thing and end up with a boat that's worth less than that.

  • @spankmeairlines
    @spankmeairlines 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is a boat that should be free to anyone willing to take it off the lot. The person taking the boat needs a couple $100,000 in the bank (and that is if they can do all the work to build a new boat on their own). The price for SEAWORTHY versions of these boats, as stated, between $50,000 and $100,000. Those all have motors, standing rigs, sails and INTERIORS! The decks are questionable - plywood core so if any water got in past those 'questionable repairs' you have 28' of mush. The hull is solid glass so likely it is fine. The hull/deck joint is pretty bullet proof so unless water got into the cap from leaking stanchions. Didn't see a standing rig ($$$$$). No chainplates ($$$) No sails ($$$$$). No motor ($$$$$$). The cost for new teak makes my eyes water. The bitts at the bow have been cut off at the deck! Assume the tanks are shot (were usually stainess steel). New electrical ($$$$). No winches and other deck hardware ($$$$). No boom gallows ($$$$). No rudder ($$$$). She is now what she may have have been in '79 - a kit boat but with less kit then when Sam delivered her to the first owner. Talk with Cape George Marine Works about how much the missing parts cost ... a new one from them, with NO options, is $400,000. Talk to Port Townsend Foundry about how much the bronze hardware costs!
    FYI: the boat LOA (on spars) is 38'. the Length On Deck is 28'1"

    Well first thing is when it comes to a boat price doesn't matter if the boat is right you will know it . It might not be the boat I or someone else would chose but as long as your good with it that's all that matters .

    Looks like an owner-finished BCC, judging by some details in the layout. If I didn't already have a BCC, and I had a lot of time, and could get if for maybe $5000 or less, it might be worth gutting everything and starting over. It would be ALOT of work though.

    Nice boat with lots of potential but the asking price is a bit steep IMO. Clearly open to offers but it would have to come way down given the work and equipment needed to get her back to see. Great find though. Andy U.K.

    That asking price is a bit high for a boat in that condition.
    That's a SERIOUS refit there. And although most of the areas you went through seemed to be solid, the bones of the boat may not be worth it unfortunately
