I must’ve got the sweetest pea puffer ever! I’ve kept mine with a group of ember tetras and cherry shrimp for a little over a year now!

I have kept lots of Malabar puffers for many years. Vast majority of mine don’t care to bother shrimp and active fish. Embers are active fast. Now slower fish or fish that like to hang out on bottom or a leaf or rock stationary they will nip nip nip. They can’t help it. I have one right now with 3 rescue guppy’s (long story) 3 ADFs 1 Cory cat also a rescue otherwise I wouldn’t have it alone a old large bumble bee goby two old Amano shrimp a single reticulated hill stream loach everything is a rescue it’s my rescue tank. Long story how each one came to be but they were unwanted or in a bad situation being neglected. It’s heavily planted smaller tank 20G. It did have a small group of pigmy corys and that’s the only thing I had to move. They hung out on this large rock a lot and the puffer would terrorize them and parts were starting to go missing so I moved them into another tank they healed survived all good. The puffer doesn’t mess with the guppy’s because they are always moving and also won’t take any crap. The larger Cory it acts like it doesn’t exist for some reason, I have kept ADFs with pea puffers MANY times never a issue. I think it freaks the puffer out that the frogs will try and eat anything that moves and can fit in their mouth. The loch it’s funny because that thing is mean😂. I never had a reticulated hill stream loach I got this one from one of my sons friends who had the poor fella in a very small tank didn’t know how to feed it right and it was going to die. I have had it a year it’s gotten much bigger quite healthy and happy. But it’s MEAN and territorial NOTHING messes with it. And the goby hates everyone and is a loner and stays in his area and is always grumpy I don’t know how old he is but he’s OLD and big. Had him for several years and he was big and old when I got him. Sucks this guys killed guppy’s. My 3 I have in there puffer every once in a while tests one and they fight back. And he retreats and doesn’t try again for weeks. Puffers are smart and gauge and remember who takes crap and who doesn’t.

Hi, need help. I got pea puffers. But they are skittish. They just get vanish in plants when I come to the tank. I got them 4 days ago..When I try to feed them other fish (tetras and platys) eat all the food. How much time will they take to get acclimated?

    • @SlickNick3
      @SlickNick3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@chinmayhebli4129 It honestly depends on the fish themselves one that I’ve had over a year still goes and hides when I come up close and another one I haven’t had as long comes right up to me. Try to feed frozen bloodworms and distract the tetras with some and try to get some to sink to the bottom in the puffers view. Hopefully the pea puffers will hunt it down on the bottom before the other fish get it all. My tetras typically don’t eat them off the substrate because they are full from what has already been fed to them. Hope this helps good luck 👍🏻

I have found tossing in a bunch of snails and black warms at nightn while their sleeping, burying them keep them active. You're irght, they get bored, so you gotta have a tank stocked (be ready to clean) with prey for them to fun or they'll just get bored. FYI, playing with them during special feeding time is great too. Snails and black worms to hunt but you give them brine shrimp and blood worms. Mean Beans are the best!

  • @masonsnakes4721

Peas puffers are all born female. They aren't sexable as juveniles because they are ALL female, then the one(s) that perceive itself to be dominant in each few will flip to male when they're adults/more mature. As babies they all have female markings, the ones that 'decide' to become males won't do so until getting older. They won't change sex again. In people terms they're all female until they grow to be bigger than toddlers/young children. Then you get them flipping to male. Amazing fish. We have a large group of ten, in a VERY heavily planted tank. They might be my favourite fish. If they keep that brighter colour and the back patches, it's female. Males lose most of those black patches, go a darker colour, and get the black belly stripe. They dance and flash the stripe at females once "ready" to go. Males also develop MUCH more of the blue patterning around the eye along with the belly stipe when mature / have decided to be male :)

It's not because they are bored it's because they need to constantly chew. They have teeth that constantly grow and the only way they keep them down is to chew hard things such as snails.
Feeding them soft blood worms does little to their teeth. I suggest building a small 10 gallon tank and fill it with bladder, pond or ramshorn snails and let them breed . Feed them to the puffers and they will be happy!

That sexing thing is for an interesting reason. Pea Puffers are born female. The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium channel has a great video on this.
The strongest female will release homones internally that change it to a male while also releasing hormones externally to inhibit the ability of other pea puffers to become male.
So don't even worry about sexing. By a few and one of them will be male when its time. ;) Just learned that before watching this video.

They don't bother my Cory Dora's in fact my Cory's fight back when they get nippy wich made them stop pretty fast. Your 10 gallon rack needs to support the whole bottom rim of the tanks. It may be fine now, but I bet you'll get some cracks down the line.

Fake news. You can build racks up to 120 gallons and only support the ends with zero issues. Thousands of people have full fish rooms built like this. Please stop spreading false information.

I don't think you should put anything in with a pea puffer except other pea puffers. Everything will seem fine for a while and then one day I'll come home and all of your other fish will be dead or have their fins eaten off. They're like Chihuahuas. Tiny but the most likely to be vicious.

  • @chassamber

Youre incorrect. I have 2 pea puffers with some endlers and a dwarf frog. Please don't put long finned fish in with puffers. They're notorious fin nippers. They need fast, short finned buddies if you want to keep them in a community tank.

@@franszymanek8695 20 gallon, apparently it’s quite common to keep them together now which I kinda seen coming as they have very similar personality just inhabit different parts of the tank

Feed them daily you will see them be less aggressive and eating random stuff. Snails should of never been added unless they are meant to be food lol
