Everquest 3: It's Finally Happening!

  • Where there's smoke, there's fire, right? Daybreak has finally come as close to an official announcement as possible regarding an Everquest 3 following the failures of Everquest Next and Everquest Landmark.
Eg7's CEO, former Daybreak CEO Ji Han announced to investors that they have plans for an Everquest MMORPG that would begin investment in 2025 with a targeted release date of 2028.
This is by far the biggest news for Everquest since the scuttling of former MMO projects and it was heartening for fans of Everquest everywhere for them to come out clearly and say the Everquest IP is there most important IP.
There are no details on what the gameplay of the new MMORPG would entail but we did get some monetization information alongside the target dates as well as how much they plan to invest in the game, at least, initially: 30 Million or more.
Monetization sounds like it might be similar to the combination already offered in Everquest and Everquest 2 as is with a premium + microtransactions

I really really want it to be EQ1 with updated graphics. With more factions that have interplay like the Dragons, Giants and Dwarves did in Velious.

Eq1 with less nonsense. Game is too vast making most quest ridiculously hard. In the end, only top players got to enjoy end game content while others struggled to even stay 30 levels behind. Epic quest were kinda dumb the way they did it. It would need a whole revamp, But I agree I would like to see it pretty much be eq1 with updated graphics. Oh and more straightforwardness.

And not change the way EverQuest 1. Worked, teamwork and a harsh death penalty that made the game much more fun to play. The game was very social and people had to rely on one another. Once they took that away the game died.

Why I think the hardest thing in the easiest thing is they just need to put in hours trying to copy very specific things from the original. Dungeon layout, if it just kept it as simple as that they could expand always crumble up other areas but as long as they made an exact scale copy.... they have the launching point the new new ideas will come very naturally from

I keep thinking back to the feeling of adventure the original EQ gave me back in the Kunark days. Dangerous forests, difficult exploration, real challenge that didn't hand-hold you as badly as modern MMOs.
Crushbone fortress, Faydark forest, the first trip to Freeport.
Grand memories. All I can do is hope the new EQ will keep grounded to what made the original good.

    Warily hopeful!
The thing I have sorely missed in MMO’s since EQ is the sense of consequence. Your character’s race mattered. The deity you worshipped or didn’t mattered. The mobs you decided to hunt mattered. Which quests you chose to do mattered. My wife’s human Druid was KOS in Qeynos because she completed a quest in Highhold Pass. My dark elf wizard could sit at the ramps of Kelethin and one shot mobs young elves were trying to run to the guards.
The EQ faction system was always on my list of items when my friends and I would theory craft an MMO from pieces of the games we had played. I hope it is carried forward in a new iteration.

I agree with you! I loved playing as my enchanter and being able to sneak into cities, I wasn't usually allowed to enter, with my illusion spells. Spells like that made the game more fun. That kind of gameplay was lost without factions working this way.
On that same note, every class had it's own special talents that made it feel special. I am sure you and your wife both got asked for teleports all the time, not to mention SoW. Druids are especially awesome.

    • @jamib7970
      @jamib7970 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

@@EerieNoodles Best teleport story. My wife was present when The Sleeper first awakened on her server, fishing off the Velious dock. People started screaming in chat as it began rampaging across the zones. She shouted she would take anyone out that could get to her immediately. She then went back twice more to evacuate folks. On the last trip from the rings they were attacked. The dwarf, who had been the last person alive in the zone, started to bolt but she told him not to run. Her concentration was high enough that the hit did not stop her teleport spell. However, when they landed she fell unconscious (that lovely you’re not quite dead yet state). The dwarf started shouting in chat for a healer and as people came running he, in character, started telling the story of this brave but crazy young Druid who had saved him from certain death.

Running 10 zones because you forgot to bind yourself, trying to find your way back to your corpse. Dying along the way naked and losing experience upon every death. Trying to find a cleric to rez all your corpses after you find your original body. Thats a day wasted but man it was frustrating fun 😂

I would love an EQ 3...but Like others have stated, I want EQ 1 with updated models and graphics. I want it configured like this:
1: Make the game based off the Original EQ.
2: Make the Maps/Zones like Guild Wars 1, where the Cities are major hubs everyone can meet in and the zones are all instances.
3: Overhaul all the classes to make it one of two ways. A: If you want to become a "X" Class - Start off as a "Y" character and work your way there by lvling up. B: Allow characters access to all classes and be able to swap between classes like FF14 does, to be able to fill roles if needed.
4: Offer a WoW style of Talent tree to make your character how you want. (Or kind of like Last Epoch).
5: Allow lvl scaling for characters to scale down to be able to play with newer players/friends.
there are many other things I would like to see, but those are the main things. I would also say maybe make towns to be more like WoW cities, they seem big, but there really isn't a lot to them.

EQ2 had a pretty decent crafting system, better than many. I was also surprised when I first got into EQ2, was doing the old grinding at a camp. Much to my surprise, after a dozen or so kills a quest spontaneously popped up. Nice. I may also have gotten a drop or two that prompted quests in the camp, or versus that type of mob. That is a great way open up opportunities for players outside a quest hub.

I spent the better part of my adulthood on Everquest and Everquest 2. I literally sacrificed my life to that game to my eternal shame. I only woke up from my MMO addiction due to a theif who managed to jack my account and strip my characters...my raid characters. Needless to say, that was the slap I needed. The push. First it was disbelief, then utter despair and then total anger when they didn't want to help me get my stuff back. It was during this pause that I re-evaluated my life and realized I had far bigger priorities I needed to be working on in my life. I had gained a ton of weight, my health went down the tubes. I'm still trying to fix some of that. The game is cool if you can prioritize life vs. game. I was not good at that and failed. I don't blame SoE or Daybreak, or the ones that owned it before Sony. I can only point the finger at myself. That said, I DO still play single player games and I'd love a remaster of Legends of Norrath and Return to Arms the way they did for Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1 & 2.

I don't think the current developers know how to make a "new everquest". Originally part of the magic of EQ1 was new visuals (3d requiring a graphics card for first time) , no one had chat or voice comms like discord, no one had access to info as readily like data miners of today, and they didn't have a giant megaphone of backseat "game devs" complaining on social media sites.
I think the MMO industry needs a massive revolution before we see any real successful MMO. It can't just be a shinier WoW clone with some group play to call it Everquest 3.
Fundamentally, I think it has to break some sort of the norms like EQ1 did. Its going to take a developer that has a "steve jobs" type attitude that isn't afraid to hurt the feelings of a lot of gamers and can stick to a design scheme. I don't even know if thats possible anymore.
My vote would be a full fledged MMO in VR. I don't think the tech is there yet to make that viable though and player complaints would probably ruin it within a month.

I have extremely mixed feelings about this.
Over the past many years, I "gave up" and shifted my love to Pantheon and crowdfunded toward it.
I believe completely that Pantheon is what catalyzed this - SOE realized they would lose their playerbase to VR, who showed that we still want a game.

I guess the question that comes to mind is whether the people who are still into the world of EQ will pick up and move to it. 1 and 2 still have people invested in them, others have found communities in other games or elsewhere (or have, to be honest, gotten a bit older and maybe don't have time anymore). What they probably need is something that seems appealing enough to people who aren't necessarily into EQ specifically but that iterates on a lot of the MMORPG tropes in interesting ways. Not something I feel comfortable speculating on, especially since the tower-of-butter EQ (my strongest memory of the game where you could build your own stuff was a chunky yellow tower someone made) and the other one didn't make it out of development. I can also see taking the original EQ with all its quirks and sort of reimagining it as a cohesive setting incorporating all the old DLCs from the start, with expansions driving things further, but maybe that wouldn't work if the original EQ is still active, as wide as the time gap is... and would probably be a huge amount of work.

What I would hate to see is the beast lord class or any class that steals from another class making that class obsolete
That that is where the magic happened for you as a group you need a healer for you to interact with other players and build friendships along with every other class. You need a shaman to slow the mobs and buff you need an enchant to mesmerise ads. you need a jewel or a wizard for that higher Damage as well as a quick evacuation out of danger if things go wrong and a rogue for that really good DPS and a tank I’d hate to see a class mixed as it was with the beast class. Don’t get me wrong. The class is insane to play. I was one of the first on my server to reach max level with a bee lord it took me, almost 2 days to max max level from the day it was launched a group of three of me and my friends set out to Max level this class. I actually got award from the GM not that the class could do anything as it was so heavily power levelled that I could not even cast to spell that was the hardest part, all my attributes and spells back then the pet was an ability not a spell much like hands. EQ was hard!!! As mentioned actions had consequences. One had to know how to play your character and you were remembered if you were good or bad at said character. Every MMO since has been easy and I want to see classic EQ back where you lost exp cause you were stupid and were rewarded for great execution.... and raid wipe rescues nothing brought out the best than sending out and SOS cause your Hate or Fear or wherever raid went sideways... those were some of the best times

The thing is people will just flood TH-cam with guides so this hierarchy of knowledge you’re looking for isn’t really a thing anymore. Everyone will know how to play their character, It has to shift to real time skill execution so timing, aim, adjustments, etc

As long as they keep its focus on being a social MMO it'll work, removing the need for other people to take on challenges isnt as rewarding as getting a few other players to take down a "unique" or "named mob", what made EQ so successful was the fact you had to be social, actively ask out for groups and build relationships with people that you may have grouped with several times and thats where the Magic lies, I and no doubt many other can recall sitting in Clan Crushbone or even in g'fay lfg on hill and having stories to share with people, or even the oasis which in all zones I've had made friendships that lasted years and in some cases even specifically waited for each other before levelling as to continue our journeys together. (sorry if this is hard to read, Covid has me and brain no work good)

Would love a back to basics approach that captured the core essence of what made early EQ1 fun and immersive. Inspired world and level design, crisp and clear art direction, a sense of community and consequence, challenge + exploration + adventure... It for sure could have used a touch of more UX / quality of life improvements to sand down some of the rough edges, but that could be done without diluting it too much.
Getting the size of the world right I think played a big part... the world feeling expansive enough to have a sense of exploration, but at the same time dense enough to cross paths with familiar faces made it feel like a living world. No more gimmicks! Staying true to a basic formula is where the magic was for me, and it seems like nothing else out there has even attempted to captured that, even the expansions for it.

I posted this in the Facebook Pantheon group, but i like the idea so much i want to repost here ..
"Literally, all they need to do is take the existing EQ1 space, smooth it out a bit with about 25x more geometric primitives, beef up the environment graphics assets, and set the scene in the past (since Eq2 is post EQ1) as a prequel. Roll out the continents in a TLP style.. Antonica, Faydwer, Odus, Kunark, Velious, Alaris, Taelosia. (strike Luclin and PoP) then in each continent, release new playable races/classes.
The main story arc would be player driven/built cities. Once Freeport, Rivervale, Qeynos, Halas, Neriak, Oggok, and Grobb were built out to a certain degree explorers could venture out to find new continents, and then Feydwer would be discovered, and start again with building Kaladim, Kelethin, Felwithe, Akanon, Mistmoore, etc. (You could even build new cities that didnt make it etc.. which are not in EQ1 technically.) Talk about replay ability! and everyone loves the TLP concept, i think that has been proven."
Let the players (your EQ1/EQ2 characters ancestors) have a hand in actually building the game that your current characters on EQ1 and EQ2 are currently playing in, and push certain artifacts/titles etc. that you would gain into EQ1/EQ2 somehow, which would incentivize you to still play EQ1 and EQ2.

Almost making it easier to make a end game character with BiS gear at tiers, allowing the whole mentality of I need to grind for months to reach endgame and them grind months more to get the gear to even compete a thing. It was simply fantastic to do lowbie lvl locking pvp. Just make 1 pvp server unique to these implementations and you'll have millions of ppl playing imo before they changed the rules all up.

Don't mean to sound rude, just stating the facts from the opinion of an original EQ player. I think everyone agrees that they want something similiar to EQ1 and less like EQ2.
My issue is, a lot of the best things in EQ1 wouldn't directly translate well into a modern game, I feel.
For example, one of my favourite things about EQ, was the community and chatting with your groupmates. You'd pull mobs, have a slower-paced fight. Then you'd have a sit and regain your health and mana and chat away.
I feel like things have 'moved on' from that though. People are used to faster combat, but also, they tend to move around more - doing quests, instead of just sitting in the same spot 'camping' mobs.
So.. Perhaps they can recreate the feelings in other ways.
For example, instead of the group chatting being something you do between fights, what if there was some sort of other avenue of gameplay where they could manifest the group chatting?
I have no idea what that will be, but for me, that's what a true Everquest Next would be.
Some way of bringing back the feelings of all the best stuff from EQ1, but managing to do it with modern-day ingredients.

I spent many years in both EQ1 and EQ2 playing many lives from a casual quester through to being a daily end-game raider and I have many fond memories of gained friendships over the years. With that being said though, my biggest concerns with EQ3 would be how much would they dumb-down and simplify the game to allow for console play or new audiences that might prefer simpler game play, and hopefully they won't make characters look too cartoony. I can remember when I first switched over to EQ2 (2 weeks after launch) and I hated how much things were simplified compared to EQ1. Then over time while playing EQ2 and trying to go back to EQ1 it was only then that I found out how lazy EQ2 had made me. If EQ3 is going to be a case of spamming 3 primary skill buttons then it's not going to hold interest for the long run like it's previous versions.

  • @Al-ny8dr
    @Al-ny8dr หลายเดือนก่อน

I would just like to see an updated version of EQ 1, but with some QoL changes. Class balancing would be nice, as well as more fun options for melee classes. For magic classes, upgraded spells should just upgrade, instead of having to get a whole new spell that does pretty much the same thing. A fix for wizards to be more fun so they are what they should be: Damage masters. Perhaps larger mana pools would make wizards more desirable. Every level in any class should also get you something, even if it's minor besides just more HP. Warriors should receive some much needed love. Loot should also have better distribution, similar to the random loot servers. Sitting to recover HPs and mana should stay in, but be more accelerated to keep the action going. It needs to stay since it is part of the difficulty, but should scale with level and such. To compensate, increase spawn rates accordingly. mana and HP recovery should slow down if any person in the group is involved in any form of combat, so meditating during combat is still a challenge. Tradeskills should be more fun and engaging. A bonus should be added per person in the group, unless it's a raid group, to promote grouping even more. Poor man's SoW should be a thing of the past. Trains should also be a thing of the past. Raids should be adjusted so they cannot be monopolized. Instead of waiting a week for something to spawn, a timer per account should exist for each player involved in a raid. Melee players should be able to be bound anywhere. Get rid of corpse runs. Instead, do what soulslike games do. Keep XP loss, but just make it debt instead. When a player dies, they only respawn if they wish to, to allow for raising dead. In other words, the original concepts where great. The game needs to have that challenge factor to feel like Everquest. All the game ever needed was more variety and some tweaks. EQ 2 chose the wrong path. The game never needed convenience. All it needed was more variety, like I already said. Finally, make cooking and fishing a fun minigame.
