  • A wave of upcoming hypercars claim to accelerate 0 to 60 mph in as little as 1.7 seconds. However, nothing has been verified. The reality is that no production car has ever managed an official 0 to 60 time of under 2 seconds. There's a reason for that. We break down how current technology has created that limit, and what could be done to break it.

    just gonna take a moment to mention World Rallycross cars. they aren't street legal of course, but do get to 60mph in 1.9 seconds, even on gravel or dirt. also, they're not exclusively built for acceleration, as they need to manage extremely tight tracks, lots of contact and jumps.

    There is a flaw in the original formula calculation IMO. The front tires on almost all product tires are smaller than the rear tires. While breaking the majority of the weight is shifted to the front tires. During acceleration it fades to the rear, larger tires where the majority of the powered is consumed (even in AWD cars).

    • @nateflatt7418

      @whysoslow1999 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's also the fact that the brake bias in road cars is often very far forward for safety reasons(avoiding mid corner oversteer if touching the brake). Optimizing brake bias for braking performance like you'd do in a racecar, you can get a good 10% extra braking from the rears and that's gonna give you a better answer for peak AWD acceleration

    • @Cody2462
      @Cody2462 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It does, one of the reasons that slicks make more grip then normal street tires is more tire touching ground

    • @NNFaNRacing
      @NNFaNRacing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For rubber tires more surface area or a larger contact patch creates more total grip. This really only applies to rubber because the coefficient of friction of a tire is inversely proportional to the pressure on the tires. So for a given compound a larger contact patch decreases the pressure pushing on the tire, for most everything else though with a static coefficient of friction, surface area doesn't matter.

    • @NNFaNRacing
      @NNFaNRacing 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The biggest difference between race tires and street tires is the compound though, so i'm sure you could cut tread into a slick and it will still have more grip than a street tire with the same grip, the problem is the tire won't last nearly as long.

A supercomputer is one designed around getting the absolute most processing power, regardless of space or cooling requirements, and often take up entire rooms and many many server racks. They are designed to run simulations and crunch numbers a human could never dream of calculating. There have been computers in cars for decades.

      @@amateurapple I agree with your statement, however you have to remember that adding AWD components to any vehicle that's RWD stock will add weight. Yes the carbon fibre panels and other components made out of carbon fibre will reduce the initial weight compared to stock steel/aluminium ones. However, more power would also be needed to compensate for the awd system. I would assume (I'm not an expert or anything on the demon's engine) the engine would be easily able to be tuned for more power. Just imagine a Dodge Demon that has Carbon Fibre body panels, only had 2 seats, an AWD system like Audi's quattro system and 1000 BHP. That would definitely make 0-60MPH under 2 seconds. Well at least in theory.

If you can't put the power down to the surface, you just simply can't achieve the best time that's possible for that given vehicle (That's if you're going for drag racing/ 0-60 times for example). Unfortunately the limitations in the current technology of tyres, wheels, surface prep etc is the reason why we can't achieve better results, well for now at least.
