Can just imagine you watching the pot. "Just want a to stir it a little" " I can just poke it with the tong, no one will know" " I need to put down this spoon and walk away" Becca's inner dialogue. Lol
Gorgeous colors. I was convinced that we couldn't immerge yarn in boiling water, but we had to change softly the temperature to avoid thermal chock and felting. But I mistook.
In my experience with intentional felting, there is more risk going from Hot to Cold than from cold to hot. (When hot, the fibers relax and open up a bit. If they cool too quickly they can come together in a disordered way.) I"ve never had felting happen from adding yarn to hot water. BUT some fibers do tend to "stick" together a bit depending on how loose the plys are. Not felting since they can easily be separated, but just a bit more grippy. These yarns are the perfect ones for colorwork etc due to that "grip"
I remember when my mom did a lot of natural dyeing (she taught natural dyeing) in the 80’s and very solid non-tonal yarns were very on trend. Now having variation in depth of shade in the same skein is a-okay. 😁

Clare, I'm interested about your mum's and yours dying and colour fasting. Do you still have any of the yarns you both have dyed and if the colour is still in the yarn now, or if any of the yarns have faded, or if the colours are still just as they were back then? If so, can you tell me if there was a unique method that went beyond the results from here that kept the natural colours from fading away? Or are there any other variables to add here?
Love the tonal colors. I bought 2 five packs of the yarn that was used in the May knitcrate, and I have food coloring and gel and kool aid packs... gonna okay around a bit. I’m still waiting for dyer supplier to get their SW/Nylon back in stock... it’s a good hearty yarn but still squishy soft. (They sent new an email way too late telling me there was some in stock beginning of Aug?? That’s now sold out). I need to go find me a catering pan, probably at Sams club or something, so I can speckle. I LOVE speckles lol. I will use your tutorials as I’m playing to help me not mess up too badly! Thanks 😉
There is a huge supply issue with bare yarn at the moment. A lot of mills are working at reduced capacity still due to the pandemic and there is more demand for the bare yarn with the holidays coming up and dyers are afraid about the shortage. I'm hoping that in the next few months this should settle down a bit.
ChemKnits Tutorials i hope so too, I totally understand.. my friend who is a dyer had to do her Christmas Advents this year with a more expensive MCN base, (I’m looking forward to it! 😉). But she didn’t charge extra, because she felt it was just a part of the times at the moment. I’m ready to dive into my first pair of knitted socks, I have a couple Hanks already prettied up, but can’t wait to make “a true my complete own” pair one day!! I'm not sure! I don't have any snow dyeing for Chanukah (since I normally film those videos in the end of summer) but maybe I'll get enough snow this year for some videos
Silk takes up color slower than wool, but it can be hard to get it saturated. I would make sure to let it soak a while to try to get more even coverage (longer than the 30 min I did here.)
@@ChemKnitsTutorials I'm not brave enough *just* yet, I've been practicing on wool, (and I know that colour on silk is also a lighter dos than wool would be from experiments)
Do you presoak with vinegar in your water? I have very hard water. I just did a test of my Wilton food dyes and found that I had to add a lot more vinegar than you usually do. I'm wonder if I presoak with vinegar in the water, would that help with this issue? Awesome video btw. Well done and I love that you tagged the timeline with the different aspects. Makes it easy to come back and rewatch certain parts of the process.
I do not presoak with vinegar typically. I don't remember if I did for some of these.... I'd have to double check the conditions in the videos description. I typically only presoak in vinegar if I am going to handpaint. Otherwise I just add the vinegar to my pots.
I always try to timestamp my videos to make them easier to navigate. :D TH-cam decided to add the timestamps to the progress bar this summer which I think is EXTRA helpful. :D

Whoops! Yes it should be red for sure. I don't think I can correct the text on the video itself, but I can double check that the recipe in the description are correct.

May I ask whether the yarn you added dry had been pre washed and dried or straight from the supplier please? I'm new to dying yarn and had previously been told you should soak/wash to remove manufacturer oils etc x
This yarn was straight from the manufacturer - I didn't prewash it. I think that some yarn bases absolutely need to be soaked first to not have dry patches, but there are others that soak up water so fast that I don't mind adding them dry. (90% of the time I presoak, though. I rarely scour before dyeing)

So, after doing this type of dye job and letting it fully dry, could you layer it with a different dye job to add more depth and complexity?? Like maybe really small grey sugar sprinkles on that teal? That would look phenom.
Absolutely! You don't have to wait for the yarn to dry first (unless you want that for the technique), you could let it cool and do another round of dye.
I don't think that the salt fact is true. I haven't heard or tried that before. With items dyed with acid dyes, if you add some vinegar to the water then it (likely) wont bleed. I'm sure you could use lemon/lime juice. Many dyers prefer citric acid powder to white vinegar. However, I think that lemon juice would get expensive unless you have a lot of excess lemons where you live.
There is a chance that the aluminum could react with the dyes a bit. (Alum salts are used as mordants and can shift the colors.) Stainless steel is non-reactive so it would be a better choice. however, if you only have access to a sturdy aluminum pot then I might use it.

The best way to make a gray dye is to start from black or a gray acid dye color. Both Silver Gray from Jacquard and Dharma are lovely grays.
