    I think these are perfect with the green being solid!

    That tonal teal green is gorgeous, and my absolute favorite. If you happen to make a fade kit with that color and taupe, I'm all over that. Gorgeous. Really interesting video, thank you!

      Taupe is a color I should try to play with anyway. It is something really hard to get with food coloring, so I'm really excited to play with browns now.

    I literally just decided, like, yesterday that I wanted to dye my own yarn for a Comfort Fade Cardi, so this video was really timely! I think I'm going to try for a more dramatic fade that won't necessarily allow for dyeing all the skeins the same base, but this still gave me some good ideas for how to make the color transition work the way I want :)

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that I might go for a more dramatic fade myself, but for some of the transition pieces, this kind of thing might help me wrap my brain around it. I have to figure out how many skeins I would need total.... Hmmm....

    I think the last skein was my favourite, with the pops of violet in there. Think the controlled addition of colour on the first one was a good way to do it to stop too much pooling in one area

      Thank you! I loved the way the last one looks, too. This whole project was so much fun for me to do.

    Ooohhh. That would be interesting to mix powders of different colors! Fascinating results. As you know, I'm not a fan of green but this would be so cool if it could be done I shades of people and blue or, even more exciting to me, sunset colors! But you've got a great technique here! This is the first time I've been interested in trying a fade technique in my knitting.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Ada! My little dye mixture after this is mostly green with a tiny violet, so I basically just saw green when I tried to use it. But we'll see how it builds up over time. :D

    I feel that if you had left the tonal the blue shade and did a heavy speckle of the green and very very little purple it would have been a great 3 speckle yarn set.

    These colours are beautiful! I've been trying for some time to come up with a set of 'matching' fades but there's always one skein that wants to go its own way, colourwise, so now I'm aiming to complete 3 sets instead of just one. I think everyone is getting shawls for Christmas next year, lol!

      I second guess myself soooo soooo much. But I like how these ones turned out overall, so I might go this kind of direction for my fade cardigan I want to make. :D

    Have you ever made a video or done a live stream where you show us what you have made with some of the yarn you have dyed? Do any of your customers ever send you pics of what they have made. I love the way it looks done up into a hank, but not sure my OCD would like how it works up. You do such great videos and I love your enthusiasm!!

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials

      We have a Facebook group for ChemKnits fans and there was just a thread in there showing a bunch of things people knit with yarn that they dyed (or I dyed).
      Here's an old video with some of my favorites: th-cam.com/video/hE2NiMWu-h4/w-d-xo.html There are occasionally a few things on my instagram, too. I'm way overdue for a new video on this.

    Do you ever make a few swatches of your lovely dyed creations to show your viewers? It would be really nice to see how they look when they're knit up! That would be a really yummy icing to an already fun to watch cake...so to speak. It sounded much better in my head! lol : )

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials

      Very rarely, unfortunately. If I finish knitting something before editing then I definitely try to include that in the video... but that doesn't happen nearly as often as I'd like.

    Hi, I love these colours and all of your videos I've seen so far, it's very inspiring, and has given me so many ideas to try, I'll be busy for a long time trying them all... 😂
    I wanted to ask, when you're doing the speckling, how do you determine how much of the dry dye to use so that it's completely taken up, and doesn't bleed when you turn it over? And do you mix it with citric acid, or did you add vinegar to the water first? Sorry if you already explained it in the video and I missed it 😀

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alyce, these are great questions! I always add some acid to the water first to help make sure the colors strike quickly (whether I'm doing it on the countertop or immersion on the stove.) The amount of dye to add and the time to wait before flipping depends a lot on the pigments in the dye - and this is something that I've learned over the years with a lot of trial and error. I try to see what the dyes are doing at first by adding a little bit and then seeing how they spread. i hope this helps!

  • @pattee8169

    I have worked with kool-aid and food colors and had residue from my projects all over my counters.😒 At this point I am skeptical about using acid dyes. I’m considering setting up a dye station outside.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lysol gets food coloring off of my counters when I spill. For acid dyes, I have a shower curtain that I use as a table cloth to cover up my counter. This makes it really easy to clean up dye spills. Sometimes I'll cover the counter with plastic wrap, but the shower curtain has worked really well and results in less trash.

    Is there a negative effect when using "too much" acid?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In terms of vinegar - no. Cooking vinegar is 5% acetic acid and shouldn't damage wool at all. Stellina can dull a bit if under acidic conditions for too long (I haven't experienced this personally, but I've heard warnings from other dyers) so people recommend using vinegar with stellina yarn vs citric acid. Otherwise - the only reason not to use too much vinegar is just a cost saving issue.

      ChemKnits Tutorials this would be super interesting! I’ve read some articles about using vegetable based hair dyes (directions, manic panic) on 100% acrylic yarn which yielded good results!

  • @1flybyguy

    Why doesn't the yarn felt with the heat and agitation?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The yarn that I used here is superwash yarn, so it won't felt. I tend to be a bit more careful with non superwash fibers, but even then you need a LOT of cogitation to cause felting. Some movement is usually okay. (Depends on the yarn of course. Roving is much more likely to get felted than yarn, for example.)

      @@ChemKnitsTutorials Thanks for explaining. Just wanted to say that forest green on the blue base is a beautiful colorway.

    When you say 1% stock solution what do you mean specifically?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A 1% stock solution is 1 g of dye per 100 mL of solution. (So you could mix 10 g of dye in 1 Liter of liquid)

    Use boiling water to mix your dye stock and the acid dye will dissolve completely.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This 100% helps. A lot of dyes will do fine in just hot water, but some can be more frustrating if I don't get boiling water.

  • @wendytaylor2737
    @wendytaylor2737 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not a big fan of hair color dye, when you use it on human hair, you use a developer ( usually peroxide) didn’t want to use that, ended up adding acid dye,, The light blue was suppose to be the eagles blue/green. Not sure how long the color will last!! ????

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I honestly have no idea. I do hope to try this out at some point, though.
