I loved this video and I love love love the yarn, and I'm so lucky to have been the sponsor, because that means I'll get to make some socks out of it. Rebecca, I really like your color sense! Thanks so much!
Tip 4, use a tie dye approach if you want greater control. Isolate the main coloured areas and dye. Then dry. Isolate the overlap area between main colours for pretty transition, then dye those and dry. Great fun, thank you for your video.
I think one reason these colours look so good is that they’re basically split complementary colours, with blue-green, orange and red/pink! Love this yarn!
That yarn is extremely beautiful. I am binge watching your videos and you are such a talented young lady. I am 63 years old and self taught myself to crochet when I was 57. I love all the yarn dyeing experiments. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Thank you so much! How wonderful that you learned the craft as an adult! I started knitting when I was 10 years old - my 5th grade teacher taught me at school! I actually dyed my first yarn with her way back then, but I don't remember what kind of dye we used. :D
This is so interesting to me im going to have to have rewatch as i dont understand how wrapping can cause the mistake. Love these colors too. Thankyou❣
If you want to wind a long hank and do not have access to a winder, place two chairs back to back. Create a loop of the desired length of yarn and place it over the two backs. Now move the two chairs apart until the loop yarn is stretched (not tightly) between them. If there is a likelihood of the chairs moving place a weight on the seat of each chair to keep them stable. Now you can neatly wind your yarn skeins with confidence between the two chair backs. After tying the yarn stabilizers, move the two chairs together and lift off your long hank.
You have inspired me to start dying more, and my son loves to help. He actually did 2 skeins using sprinkles in these 3 colors this evening after seeing me watching your video. Thank you for inspiring my teenager to work with me!
Great success (in my view)! I like your warping board. I weave more than I knit and I made one myself some time ago. I didn't think about using railing wood for that, good idea you had. It's good also that you found a solution about an efficient way to assemble / disassemble it. When a make a warp for weaving, I will use a guide / leader thread which will help me form the path of the warp on the board. Since you need a circular path instead on a linear one as for weaving, I think it may help you to decide where the yarn will go. The way you put the yarn on the board at the end of the video looks more adapted to what will be useful for you. Happy dyeing!
Really love how this turned out! Hope I can try this sometime. Thanks so much for all you do and share with us! I also loved the DGY ad! I love DGY - I’m an affiliate and hope I have this same ad on some my videos.
How cool that there was a yarn ad on the video! I have no control over the ads TH-cam places on the videos. I think it has to do with the viewer and what companies are offering ads at the moment. (The ads I see are so random given the random content I watch.)
A paler orange would bring more contrast - especially with the pink. I didn't think to look at this in B&W like I enjoy doing with some of my other videos.
Always love your tutorials. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge! I really love self-striping yarn - having a hard time visualizing the actual warping board process and the math involved as they tend to overlap on the way back, etc... Just an idea for a future tutorial! :)
Thank you! We looked at a bunch and then tried to design something that would work well. I think it helps that the end pegs aren't perfectly straight because it holds itself together so well with that extra bit of tension. :D
The three color combos I come up with off the top of my head: red, purple, black brown, turquoise, green green, purple, brown I'd even try a blue, white, black combo for my local high school.
If you get 3/8" rubber gaskets from the hardware store you can put them over the pegs that stick out at the join and it will hold it pretty securely. That's how the dowels on Schacht's Tension Kate are secured.
Will they fit over the 1/2 in peg? If so, this is a great idea. The whole thing stays pretty sold once I have it together right now, so I'm not super concerned, but this is worth looking into before I break down the construction.
I saw a video ages ago from someone using a warping board for this and I cannot remember whose video it was or I'd give them a shout out. I'd LOVE to learn to weave someday!!
Wow, great job today Rebecca. But, I think it looks like a LOT of work to get it done. I think I would have had to keep that for myself. It was however fun watching you do all the work. Thanks.
Self striping yarn is a lot more work than other types of colorways. Gradients can be a lot of work, too. It takes a similar amount of time to wind a long skein as it does to crank a blank I think. Maybe the blank is a bit longer. I didn't time myself doing this, but I watched some TH-cam videos while I worked. :D
I wanted to make one out of PVC initially - and that would definitely be lighter. I was trying to find the most cost effective way to DIY one to share with people. But I also highly recommend PVC pipe for everything!
For the side rails, to prevent them twisting in, you could get a smaller dowel size, like a quarter inch or so, drill a hole through those top dowels while they're in place and then put the smaller dowel in to create a cross. This should keep it secure to prevent twisting with tension.
We thought about doing something like that. Thankfully, since we're not perfect wood workers the dowels aren't in at perfect angles so it holds things tight pretty well.
Great job. QUESTION PLEASE. Love that you make your own tools like the warping board. Very cool. Great yarn. Where do you learn how long the lengths need to be for self stripping yarn? How do you know what the yarn will look like and how the stripes will go/. Crazy, it must be mathematics, where I’m good as long and only if I know how to enter the calculation into the calculator to get correct answer. THANKS IN ADVANCE. My three colors would be two type of browns one dark one lighter maybe beige and a beautiful light blue.
This is a great question! I think there is some trial and error since it depends on how wide you want the stripes to be. The best way to calculate is to cast on and knit at the gauge you would use for socks. Unravel and measure the length of yarn. Multiply this length by the number of rounds you want the stripe to be, and how many stripes total. I've found that ~3-4 yards of bare yarn per color gives a nice sized stripe. There are people who can give MUCH better recommendations on this than I can. I'm still figuring this out myself!
Gynx yarns (witch is no more) an might be called Gynx handmade here on TH-cam has a wrapping tutorial that will help you wrap all the yarn in the correct order. If anyone is looking for a good video to watch. I believe it’s in with her dyeing yarn tutorials.
This is a great tip! I use a pasta insert in the pot which keeps them above the bottom (there is about an inch of liquid beneath them) but a board would work well, too, for people who don't have inserts.
The striping error was likely due to the fact this was one of my first times winding on the warping board and I must have crossed it at some point. I haven't made this mistake again (yet!)
Absolutely! I would probably unwind a few yards at a time and then wind onto the cake. I'm not sure if it would pull off directly if that makes sense. I prefer to store yarn in skeins versus cakes, but if the sponsor had asked me to cake up the yarn then I might have gone directly to a cake. (Of course, maybe not since I might want to show the skein for the video.... but this is a case where I might do things differently if I wasn't filming.)
What a gorgeous hank! What exactly is difference between this warping board thing ( that I have no idea what it actually is lol) and using a yarn swift to wind and hank up a skein of yarn 🧶. ?? Thank u for sharing. Could u please show us how to put & actually show how u tie / make the ties the ties in the wound hank of yarn where the hank won’t come apart or tangle? ☺️
Kriss - I set such a bad example of adding ties to yarn. Normally I just add a reusable nylon zip tie and call it a day. In this video I did add some butterfly ties, but you could do that on a smaller skein as well. I hope to make a dedicated video on preparing a skein for dyeing at some point. The warping board is a tool that weavers use to make really really long lengths of yarn that they use for the warp of fabric, scarves, etc. Dyers can find these useful to make skeins longer than they might be able to from (for example) having two chairs super far apart in a dining room. I haven't filmed a proper tutorial with my warping board because I'm still practicing on how to use it myself. It is fun and useful, though. The warping board creates a skein that is WAY too big to fit on a swift - which usually works well for skeins 1-2 yards in diameter. Some people like to reskein things so they can be a consistant length.
Oh Rebecca this was awesome. I can't believe I asked about this on Instagram the night before it came out. Your board is great but how could you not film everything you silly goose lol. I'm sure it will be fine. The yarn is beautiful! Great great job! One thing I'm trying to understand is how the mistake happened. Is it from where the yarn is tied together wasn't one color? I got confused there. I'm sure Ann can cut it out if she likes so know frets. 5 stars on this one!
I think when I was starting the vlog I got distracted working with Keith. I had a deadline for a collaboration so we had to get it done. I know I didn't film the glueing step but I think I can fill in the pieces that I didn't show. It was so easy to make. It is not that much cheaper than purchasing a warping board, but Dyer Supplier really wanted me to try to make one myself. I might have tried PVC pipe but that would have gotten so expensive so fast. The nice thing with this one is that I can go SO MUCH longer than I have already and that isn't going to be any harder.
@@ChemKnitsTutorials oh I rewatched video n caught what you said when yarn changed directions mid stream. Got it now. Love this so much. Oh btw gynx closed her channel so no watching that.
I"m looking at purchasing a warping board to try this. I see some are square and some are rectangle...does it make a difference for self striping yarn? Is one better than the other?
I think that the square one I made may be less ergonomic and more awkward than some other types, but I was trying to make one cheaply. I will say I love that we figured out a way to make it collapsible!

This is a great question - unfortunately I think it would be hard for me to do because I'm not 100% sure how I made the error. I think I must have flipped direction at some point when winding. I would say the best advice is to make decisions when turning to always go over the peg (for example) and try to maintain that consistency.

Right now I've reduced the number of videos that I am working on at a time since my time to film is much more limited. :(
Great question! it is a device like a frame with a lot of pegs that weavers use to create the warp - or the long strands on the loop when they make a woven fabric. Dyers use this to make super long skeins for self striping and gradient type projects.
You're right, it is a happy accident! I was sad because I hoped that I could correct it with the dyeing. If I did a 2 strip colorway then it would have been invisible. BUT our sponsor is excited for the happy accident.

i do not have a lot of space, i am thinking maybe trying a 2 color strip
Two colors are much easier to set up. 😍
@@ChemKnitsTutorials question , do i need to have a big loop or can i use a smaller loop of yarn
@@tattercandy you want a large loop so you have enough space for the stripe to be long. I've wrapped yarn around two chairs spread out or used a super long pvc pipe niddy noddy (see Dyepot weekly 100)
So very pretty.
Thank you!
wow beautiful
Thank you!
it would be cool to dye mini skeins inside of plastic easter eggs
That's a cute idea! Most of the eggs that I have on hand have some small holes in them, but maybe it could be used for steaming? I'm not sure if the plastic would melt or not, but if the plastic could hold up to steam it could be a nice plastic wrap alternative for minis.
@@ChemKnitsTutorials i think if you made some more small holes in the eggs it would not melt i know you can pour the melt and pour soap in them to create soap i think it would be fine
@@austinscraftcorner oh cool! I haven't tried them for soap molds before.
Gynx yarns (witch is no more) an might be called Gynx handmade here on TH-cam has a wrapping tutorial that will help you all the yarn in the correct order. If anyone is looking for a good video to watch. I believe it’s in with her dyeing yarn tutorials.
Beautiful Rebecca
Also with my board I had my husband to cut out the corner end so I could lay the 2 prices flush with each other an used wing nuts.
Thank you! I'm still not sure how I ended up with the switch back in the yarn, it was a mystery for me. I plan to practice more!
I had to do it a few times also before I got the hang of it. I haven’t done it in a while now but I want to say you go the opposite way of the other end so if you go over at the top then you will go under at the bottom. I will find the correct video an share it here

Thank you!
@@ChemKnitsTutorials Turned out BEAUTIFUL ❣️
How can you sponsor a video?......I asked before the end of video lol!
Unfortunately, is currently sold out - but you should be able to still check out the listing through the video description. (In my etsy shop: chemknitscreations.etsy.com/)
I normally have a certain number of slots open at any given time and I release new slots as I finish videos. Right now I've reduced the number of videos that I am working on at a time since my time to film is much more limited. :(
My three colors would be brown, rust and gold..
Ok.. so for a newbi.. here what is a warping board? 😂😁
Great question! it is a device like a frame with a lot of pegs that weavers use to create the warp - or the long strands on the loop when they make a woven fabric. Dyers use this to make super long skeins for self striping and gradient type projects.
ChemKnits Tutorials 😂 lmao 😂 so then what is “the warp” ? Lol 😝
You keep saying mistake. It is a happy accident that is always a risk when dying yarn this way.
You're right, it is a happy accident! I was sad because I hoped that I could correct it with the dyeing. If I did a 2 strip colorway then it would have been invisible. BUT our sponsor is excited for the happy accident.
Very worst 🤮🤢
