i played with m2 irons for years. Broke 80 with them a few years back. got fit into proper titleist 620s last year and now stay around mid to low 70s. wish i knew this a few years ago.
Last year I replaced my Mizuno TP 9’s bought in 1988 with a new set of Lynx VT iron 5-pw got these from our pro for £320 very much like the irons. I have subsequently add VT 4 iron and in August added the VT Prowler stinger(12.5 degree) which is a great club. I have kept the Mizuno TP9 PE and see as they fit well with the lofts of the lynx and the work well for me.
This was my first year back playing after a break of 15 years. I bought a set of brand new callaway x hot 4-pw irons for 340 £ here in sweden. Was going to go down the second hand road but when I was a kid i always wanted a brand new set of callaways so I felt I earned it when it was so cheap🤣 they worked great for me this year. Broke 90 first time ever last week. But I think I will be looking in to less improvment/forgiving irons soon on the second hand market. I hit the 7 iron close to 170 yards so I don't need them for the distance but I am thinking of getting a set of mega cheap blades to train ballstrikinh with over the winter.
This is literally what I’ve done with my Srixons, 565 and 765 combo set. I can’t recommend them more, when I do get low enough and treat myself to a fitting I’m so tempted try the new Srixons!
Here in Finland you can’t play during winter months so golf equipment retailers usually give good discounts during autumn which is the end of golfing season here. 2 years ago I managed to get brand new D7s 5-PW for 330€ which is like 280£. Great clubs for great price.
Wilson d7's are great. I've moved on to the D9 and was able to buy them for $50 plus trading in my D7's. BTW I LOVE the D9's the are long,forgiving and straight

My friend bought a set of Ben Hogan Ft Worth 15 iron set 4-P for $300. They are amazing irons. Smaller head, but they cut through the ball like butter every time. Highly recommend.
I got the Lynx forged blades, custom fit KBS tour shafts, Lamkin grips brand new 3-pw with a FOC VT driving iron for under £500! Absolute bargain of the year as far as I was concerned!
Been playing the Lynx VT's for just over a year now. 5-PW £275 in Aug 2020 and they looked like they had hardly been hit when they arrived. Fantastic set of irons with great ball speeds!! Good to hear I probably won't have lost much money if I decide to change next year
As a constant ebayer, I have played just about every brand out there. Srixon (745, 765 and now zx5/7) and the Hogan Ft Worth 15 irons! The Hogan Ft Worths are amazing!! Everyone showed have a set of blades in the closet to take out occasionally and play pure golf! My ball striking improved tremendously the summer that I played blades! Great list!!
Been playing cobra irons for years now… currently the fly z’s. Great irons. Honestly can’t see switching them out soon. If I do it will be to a newer set of Cobra’s as well 🤑
Got the m2 brand new 5 months ago from American golf. Very forgiving clubs and only £450 brand new. Still selling them new now as they are the newer 2019 version instead of the 2017 original
A word of warning on Taylormade M2 irons. I bought a brand new set late in the season of 2018. Early 2019, I caved in the face of both my 7 and 4 irons. I was 58 at the time and by no means a hard striker. Turns out the M2s had a manufacturing defect and Taylormade actually send me a set of M6s in replacement. Was really nice of them though as they bypassed the M4s and went straight to the newly released M6s free of charge. Loved the M6s and I imagine the M4s were just as good. That defect wasn’t general information btw. Had to do some research on the internet to confirm others had the same problem.
Great info on irons. I'm ashamed to say that I still love the feel of my Lynx Parallax irons I've been playing with for 20 years. I've tried others but always come back to my Lynxs. They're virtually worthless but I love them.
I picked up the irons I wanted when I started playing in 2001... Callaway Hawkeyes. When they came out they were 2k...I picked up a 9/10 condition 3-pw...1in longer and new lamkin grips...traded a Cobra F speed driver for them!
Your right about Cobra irons I bought two sets from American golf brand new but old models got Fly Zs 5 to Pw £279 and King F7s 5 toGw £309 played with them for a couple of years each. Got fitted for Mizuno 921 forged 5 to Pw in June cost £875 but only because clubs for cash gave me £600 for old clubs that included F7s that they allowed me £235 for and an M2 driver with sky marks got £115. I also recently sold flyzs to a mate along with Cleveland RTX2 56 deg for£150 for his cousin who was taking up the game this is price golfbidder would have give me.
Cobra S2 forged dead cheap, traded two of my bladed sets for it recently. can reach long par 5s in two for a change. Never even heard of the model though. Cheers
Absolutely bang on about the Srixon and Wilson, I have the 545 and d7 forged, both spot on and off 5 I’ve had the p790,i500,i210,Nikes,cobra tec and honestly only looks abs acoustics, there are some great clubs for far less but golf snobbery won’t let people try them

Just got a brand new set of Lynx VTs. $455 through Lynx USA. They feel great, just as good as the P790s I tested, and were about 1/3rd the price after all.

I had the lynx vt absolutely loved them i bought them on a whim unfortunately i didn’t know my specs so they were just standard everything no good for me. Ive been thinking maybe getting another set but fitted this time or if second hand try and find a set suited to me we shall see next year.

I've played as a young teen got lessons had my mum caddy for me and learnt to play then just left the game for years maybe had a game or two every few years but nothing to improve my game. now I'm back on it watching golf playing golf researching everything about it and I'm a green keeper. Cobra F9/Speedzone and Wilson D7 are very much the same - the big, game improvement bomber iron so worth considering both in the same category. Love the other suggestions though! But one to consider for NEW irons around that similar price (maybe a little more) is this Takomo 101 Iron. Similar to the Lynx/P790 you mentioned. Looks like a big bladed, forgiving iron but its £330 a set direct from them. After import tax it's closer to £400 but it's still a BRAND NEW set of Japanese forged irons. Well worth a look. They have great reviews online. TXG did a great review of them. You can customise them too. Maybe go the degree upright for the slicer?
I bought a demo set of like new Cobra F7 irons a few years ago for $150, they're a fairly compact midsize game improvement iron, and they combo well with my Cobra Amp forged irons.
In the game improvement area, I found a great deal on Ping Karsten 2014 irons.. They seem to get lost in the mix due to the old karstens popping up and I was able to get 5-uw for $200. Typical Ping G forgiveness and great feel on these.
Can also go modern vintage. Picked up a set of Ben Hogan Edge CFT 3-PW with new midsize grips for literally no money. Beautiful looking and with forged titanium face go like a rocket. 😁
I play them as well totally agree the titanium insert in the face makes them just as long as todays irons but with more traditional loft. The short irons do chew up your ball though!!

Simon you never mention component heads. You Really should look into all the different component companies that make iron heads. Could make fir good video or even a series.
I was a 2/3 handicap late 90's. Then quit for 23 years!! Using mizuno TP11 irons. Still got them. But what is out there now that's similar? I still can play single figures (just).
Simon I have taylormade sim 2 max irons and they got handicap down to 16 and I want a players iron set but cannot afford the new models, I strike the irons well but I'm not fastest swing I play regular flex , I want and older cheaper but good quality iron ,What do you recommend please Karl
I've got the 565's...the face insert is different than the forged body, has never felt soft at impact, and that's with graphite shafts.....my old Ping G2's feel much more solid. Just not as pretty...lol
I just scored a set of Taylormade Tour Preferred MC forged for $180. I pulled the shafts and put in KBS Tour 90s. They’re awesome matched with my Taylormade MG2 wedges. 😍
Interesting option the lynx as a p790 replacement for those of us on a budget, any one any experience of the lynx set? I am thinking of moving on from my 2014 Taylor made tour preferred MC with one tour steel shafts, would the lynx be a good step forward?
I have the VT’s 4-PW and I love them, so much so I ended up getting the Stinger driving iron along with them. When you connect well centred strikes I feel the pop from the hollow core makes it feel like the ball is bouncing off the face with a lot of power, which as sort what I was after and they deliver and there’s more than enough there to control fades draws etc. I’d recommend them for sure, although chrome probably is the better option as when I first looked the gunmetal finish looks really nice but wouldn’t last well. Hope that helps.
Just me or does it seem like people are trying to drive up the price way higher for irons. There are so many old old irons selling for way more than they should be. I saw x22s going for $450
changed from my Ping eye 2´s ive had since 1990 to new TM M2 irons this year (M2 and Rogue and CF8 was the 3 cheapest sets available from the store, about 350£, meant to buy used Ping i500 or maybe iblade but couldnt resist the allure of brand new clubs for almost half the price) its has been a pretty easy transition, i honestly wouldnt say they are much more forgiving or better (the pings are just so good), but they are about 1,5 clubs longer for me, and that helped me get back to the same distances that i had when i was younger and what i still hardcoded in my head. did hit some srixons that would maybe be an even easier transition but they were alittle more expensive
Just bought, on eBay, a set of Srixon Z545 Irons, 5 - approach wedge with Miyazaki Graphite shafts for .......... £218.00!. They are UNBELIEVABLY good! I'm 59 & 3 hcp. With these irons It really feels like I am cheating! Unless you are rocking up to the golf club in a £100k car there is no need to spend £200.00 PER CLUB.
had the lynx VT irons for 2 years. first proper custom fit clubs. my only real issue with these irons is that they had a super sweet spot. if you 100% hit them from the middle it could be a club diffrence, almost like a flyer. apart from that, great value for money

Ben Hogan PTx Pro irons are the best bang for the buck…. BEST Players and forgiving irons. New Hogans are half priced as the forged top other models.

Interesting option the lynx as a p790 replacement for those of us on a budget, any one any experience of the lynx set? I am thinking of moving on from my 2014 Taylor made tour preferred MC with one tour steel shafts, would the lynx be a good step forward?
I have the VT’s 4-PW and I love them, so much so I ended up getting the Stinger driving iron along with them. When you connect well centred strikes I feel the pop from the hollow core makes it feel like the ball is bouncing off the face with a lot of power, which as sort what I was after and they deliver and there’s more than enough there to control fades draws etc. I’d recommend them for sure, although chrome probably is the better option as when I first looked the gunmetal finish looks really nice but wouldn’t last well. Hope that helps.
Just me or does it seem like people are trying to drive up the price way higher for irons. There are so many old old irons selling for way more than they should be. I saw x22s going for $450

Yeah upgraded to the m1 same thing happened to those. Basically anything 2017 on with face slots are terrible
Adams XTD is basicly a better version of M2s and very cheap.

changed from my Ping eye 2´s ive had since 1990 to new TM M2 irons this year (M2 and Rogue and CF8 was the 3 cheapest sets available from the store, about 350£, meant to buy used Ping i500 or maybe iblade but couldnt resist the allure of brand new clubs for almost half the price)
its has been a pretty easy transition, i honestly wouldnt say they are much more forgiving or better (the pings are just so good), but they are about 1,5 clubs longer for me, and that helped me get back to the same distances that i had when i was younger and what i still hardcoded in my head.
did hit some srixons that would maybe be an even easier transition but they were alittle more expensive
Just bought, on eBay, a set of Srixon Z545 Irons, 5 - approach wedge with Miyazaki Graphite shafts for .......... £218.00!. They are UNBELIEVABLY good! I'm 59 & 3 hcp. With these irons It really feels like I am cheating! Unless you are rocking up to the golf club in a £100k car there is no need to spend £200.00 PER CLUB.

had the lynx VT irons for 2 years. first proper custom fit clubs. my only real issue with these irons is that they had a super sweet spot. if you 100% hit them from the middle it could be a club diffrence, almost like a flyer. apart from that, great value for money
Enjoyed the video. I find that as I play left handed that the choice is very limited.
I'm just gonna say it...sorry, i dont like the look of the ben hogan irons. There, i've said it. But srixon, 👌 they look lovely. IMHO of course
