    I’ve always wondered why Doug never talks about a car’s sound system when talking about quirks and features....And this explains why.

    • @QuincyPoaches
      @QuincyPoaches 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      He is totally ignorant on audio. It's his kryptonite!

    • @ELEVATEOFFROADCOM
      @ELEVATEOFFROADCOM 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I'm always so sad when he has opportunities to review the UNREAL oe sound systems he's lucky enough to encounter.
      Merc's Bermester, Ford GT's Mcintosh, and especially Pagani's Sonus Faber... All missed opportunities to satisfy us curious audiophiles.

    • @falkenlaser
      @falkenlaser 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      ELEVATEOFFROAD.COM I’d think Doug would at least show Audi’s and Aston Martin’s Bang and Olufsen’s tweeters pop out of the dashboard, as those are quite a quirk even for a non-audio guy.
      But a lot of those premium sound systems made by super high-end brands like Bermester in M-B, Bang and Olufsen in Audi et. al., and Meridian in Jaguar and Land Rover aren’t entirely made by those brands, as a single pair of entry-level speakers from many of those brands would cost the same or more than the cost of the entire sound system option (e.g. Meridian’s entry level speaker is a $3000 boom box, which is more than the Meridian option). So they’re not at the same level of quality of speakers those brands make, and a high-end aftermarket system (such as my Hertz Mille Legends powered by a JL Audio Slash 300/4v3 amp) would blow most away. The one exception I could see would be Sonus Faber in the Paganini since that’s an extreme limited production care and everything about it is perfect.

      Vehicle Virals yeah... I thought he was dumbing it down for his younger viewers but that doesn't make sense either because everyone knows what an eqalizer is...they make software one these days.

    • @WilliamTM
      @WilliamTM 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      To be fair to modern cars, they do have much better sounding stereos nowadays. I've been in loads of friend's cars from the last 5 or so years, even budget ones, and they all sound great. Compare that to older/cheaper cars from 10+ years ago and they were a lot lot worse so an EQ would actually help with improving audio quality, in some cases.
      Plus...I can still change it anyway, it's just moved to my phone rather than the car.

    Doug, this car is AWD, has a t3/t4 turbo, deep cuts in the seats to hold you in place, a large vertical shifter, a dashboard designed for a guage cluster, and a wheel that isn't cluttered with unneeded buttons. The 4G63T motor came with a butterfly valve system for pulling in more air at higher speeds. It came running like 14 second quarter mile times, 195 horse power, doing over 120mph from the factory. The GSX is a great racecar platform on a budget. That's what it's best for. I loved mine.
    PS: I've seen these with sub 8 second quarter mile times. I was building a road racing car when I sold mine and the person who bought it was stripping it to the metal and making it into a drag car.

    The Eclipse has had one of the worst fates ever... It started out as a cool little coupe (1st Gen) and even became a movie star (2nd Gen), then puberty hit it like a truck (3rd Gen) and it looked really weird for a few more years (4th Gen)... And now they turned it into a ridiculously ugly Crossover that looks like a modern version of the Pontiac Aztek or a jacked-up Prius (5th Gen, Eclipse Cross). What a shame - I feel you, poor little car.

      I had a 1991 eclipse for a few years In the early 2000, when I was in college, It was easy Easy to drive and park, had a cute interior, dashboard and trunk, Of course mine was the baseline model, at least it had power windows, but the thing had 95 horsepower But I seriously do miss the heck out of that car and if I could have ever clicked my heels and had the 135 hp DOHC engine installed, not even the Turbo, I would've been happy

      +Will Serrano it was because CD players were just becoming widely available, but were still expensive. Many people's only CD player was a discman or similar. You hooked it up to your home stereo with a minijack->RCA plug then brought it to your car. While having a front facing jack was rare, tons of cars back then did have an "aux" setting that went to two RCA ports on the back of the head unit, and then the dealer or other installer would run the cable to the glovebox or something. I think a lot of JDM cars actually had the front minijack very early, due to the popularity of MiniDisc long before MP3 players and later smartphones were a thing, though it is strange to see it in the US designed and built eclipse, maybe that premium head unit was used in actual Japanese Mitsubishis as well.
      Edit: it also makes sense in a higher end car stereo because those tape adapters sounded terrible, and someone shelling out for it at the time probably has a portable CD player and would want it to sound good

    A couple of things to note. The sliders on the stereo are collectively called a graphic equalizer and a lot of '80s stereos had them. Going further back, lots of people would install custom stereos with an extra power amp that had one of these equalizers built in. Manufacturers just started adding them to the OEM head units due to their popularity. Also, on the power locks with these Japanese cars, you could unlock the driver door from the passenger side using the key (and vice versa IIRC). You simply turned the key twice in the unlock direction and it unlocked the other side (and the back doors if it was a 4-door). I think they were trying to figure out a way to have some of the functionality of keyless entry without using a transmitter fob, a thing that I miss every time I have to pull the big honking key fob from my pocket when I want to drive my car. I hate the bulky newer keys and key fobs taking up all that space in my pocket. Hopefully this gets remedied at some point and they finally miniaturize this stuff.

    Man Doug, for knowing so much about cars, there are a lot of common features that you apparently don't know about...
    -The "second high beams" in the light bar are not a separate light. It is just the regular high beams turning on while your flip up lights are still down.
    -The sun roof was actually a moon roof since it was see-through glass. You also didn't have to remove it to get the outside air. The handle where you released it can flip forward and latch up, holding it open at an angle.
    -Stereo sliders are an EQ. Each number is a different frequency that you are adjusting independently. Most stock stereos now adjust the bass, mid, and high on a bell curve and don't allow for independent frequency adjustment.
    -I've seen various newer cars that still have cruise control on stalks. It is not uncommon.
    -The pocket to "hide stuff from cops" is the exact opposite of that. It is where you store your vehicle registration and insurance paperwork.
    -The dome light actually DOES make sense and functions EXACTLY like every other one in existence. You have 3 positions: On, Door, and Off. On would latch it to be used at any point and would keep it on pretty much until the battery of the car dies. The one with the dot is the Door option. Having it down allows the dome light to come on only when the doors are open. When they close, the lights go off.
    -The cartoonish drawings in the owners manual are quite common in many Japanese manuals of the 80's and 90's; this would include vehicles and electronics.

      I know this is old but I had to comment on this. I stopped watching at the EQ part. The headlight comment and the note about a convertible solving the “sunroof” issues had already irritated me. I owned a 97 and it had a POWER MOONROOF! The glass slide above the roof... not a convertible.
      I understand it has to be very tough to put a video together on the fly, make it interesting and get everything 100% right but my God man... this entire video is flawed. It’s a shame because I really liked this generation of Eclipse in its time and was looking forward to a knowledgeable review.

    LOL, it's called a coin tray! Way back in 1990 we used to pay tolls with actual coinage. It went sorta like this; you would pull up to a toll gate, reach into the change tray, remove the required coins and toss them into a (what looked like) a giant urinal, the coins would clink and clatter to the bottom then the gate would raise to let you pass. A very handy tray to have, especially in cities like Chicago.
    Keep up the old car stuff, I love it. Thanks!

    I owned a black on silver Eagle Talon TSI just like in the brief photo you popped up. The reason you felt the vague on center steering is because your test car didn't have the larger wheel and sporty tire package. I absolutely loved this car. It's slow by today's standard, but so is a BMW e30 (which I currently drive). In its day it was quick, giving Mustang 5.0 GTs a run for their money. And when the roads got slippery, it was game over for just about anything else. The AWD system worked flawlessly with nice rear wheel bias. I could go on, but thanks for bringing back the memories!

    You're too old to not know what an equaliser is. Those audio trim sliders was a 7 band EQ feature. You'll find them in pretty much every Ford or GM from the 90s. And you're a car reviewer. That's a pistol grip shifter. For a guy who notices every odd detail, I'm surprised you didn't know these two things.

      Many high end 90s Bose, Sony etc. stereo amplifiers came with equalizers on them.
      Digital graphic displays were still in their infancy until late 90s early 00s.
      But, i do have to say that i can't remember having seen an analog equalizer in a car before.

    The best part about these cars was that you could add almost 100 hp with exhaust, boost controler, and good gas. I had a 92 TSI AWD for many years and loved it - rarely did someone know what it was when they were new. And it was actually reliable if you tuned it carefully (monitoring knock etc.), didn't push beyond safe limits.. kept good oil/gas and didn't beat up the transmission with fast shifting.

Fast forward to 1998, and I was able to buy my first new car (with my dad's help) and I bought a brand new GST. I have kept that car. I'm more baffled by how baffled Doug is throughout. The taillights across the back of the car was fairly commonplace among small sedans in this era with the middle being nothing in those as well. Coupled with the high beam in down position gaffe. And anyone (like myself) who owned a car with those seatbelts, all that did was allow us to APPEAR to be using a 3 point belt. It cause more unsafe scenarios as most just ditched the lap belt. Modern cars have those little sliders on the stereo but now they're digital... called an EQ.
    I want to feel like Doug is trying to make his younger audience feel not so dumb and he really knows more than he's letting on but I wonder if he's spent too much time in nice cars that now he nose deaf to the old plebeian ways most of us were used to.

    • @davebennett5069
      @davebennett5069 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Seriously, he doesn't know what an analog EQ is, doesn't understand the concept of radio buttons (the style of button, not the buttons on the radio itself), has yet to properly identify the registration holder that he's mentioned in every video is "Too small for anything, maybe a credit card? Or hide something?"...no Doug, that's for the registration. Most older cars had a place for it. Totally bewildered by the shift knob/lever - DOUG HAVE YOU ACTUALLY BEEN IN CARS? I get the feeling this guy is completely disconnected from the reality of older cars. I think of Doug's descriptions as the epitome of "first world problems". Try comparing the vehicle to others of its era to understand why things are the way they are.

The one on the right is the "OFF" setting, regardless of any other setting, and the one in the middle, that you didn't press is a setting to allow the lights to come on when the doors are open, and off when the doors close.

      My first was also a 1991 TSI fwd. I got it for $600 when i was 16. The guy that sold it to me told me the transmission was on its way out but i bought it anyways. I had limited money and i wanted a sports car so i took a gamble. Trans lasted about two months and had to park it. Could not find a transmission anywhere. In 1998, the internet wasn't as helpful as it is now lol. Long story short, an old man stopped by my house trying to buy it. After we talked for over 2 hours, come to find out he had a 1991 Plymouth Lazer. The motor was blown in his car. I talked him into selling it to me for $300. So I was able to use his transmission and by this time I had a decent job and a little money so I decided to rebuild the car. My dad and i pulled the motor and bored it out .20 over and put forged internals into it. Put a stage 2 turbonetics turbo I got from Stillen Racing. The turbo alone cost $1300. Now you can get turbos on ebay for $100 lol. HKS super sequential BOV, HKS down pipe, up pipe and exhaust. Head was rebuilt by a local engine racing company that has since closed doors and moved to a bigger city.Transmission was rebuilt by a company in texas I cant remember the name. I live in Ky. I had a little over 4k in the engine and trans. Now you could rebuild this car using parts off ebay for like 1500 lol. By far the most fun I ever had in a car. That thing would move!! Sorry for the rant. Just brought back some amazing memories and times with my Dad. Lol

    My older sister "special ordered" a brand new 1990 Eagle Talon for her first new car. That was back in the day when you could order a car to be built exactly as you wanted it. She didn't like the upper model TSi because it came with the painted alloyed wheels to match the color of the car. So she ordered the base Talon with literally every single option you could get except the pop out sunroof. It was a white exterior with grey cloth interior with the optional 4 speed automatic. I can still remember going to the dealer to pick it up with her. Salesman said he never had one custom ordered this well equipped. She kept it in mint condition for 11 years, always garaged. Sold it to a gentleman who was buying it for his kid. I tried to talk her out of selling it but she wanted a new car. I miss that car so much. Everyone in our town knew it was my sister's car because it was so rare. I always thought the Talons were so much nicer than the Eclipses.

      m k the Mitsubishi cars brand is a tiny component of the overall company. It's one of the biggest industrial titans of Japan. The brand was never that strong in the US and their cars sold here were basically all shitboxes.
      I think they decided to focus their car brand on developing world sales and gave up on the US market - Mitsubishis are everywhere in South America and Asia. Same deal with the other tier 2 Japanese car brands, like Isuzu.

    I owned a brand new '90 Eagle Talon Tsi, the equivalent of the Eclipse GS (both turbo, FWD). I still think of it as one of the most fun cars I've owned, and I loved the styling, performance and value. Only issues were torque steer, which the AWD version (GSX or Tsi AWD) cured, and warping front rotors. It was also the fastest car I've driven, as in 120 on the interstate. I wish I still had it and one actually just sold on Bring a Trailer for about $18K, but I realized it was just trying to take 30 years off my age, which it couldn't do, so I didn't bid. Now I wish I did. Oh well.

    I HAD ONE OF THESE! Mine was a 1991 GSX AWD, in metallic blue. Really sharp-looking car, and for 1991, it was a straight badass. I didn't really drive it that hard or street race or do anything crazy, but I definitely did some excessive speeds down some twisty mountain roads for the four years I had it, and it never did me wrong.
    The AWD system was fantastic and very simple, no supercomputers like you find on cars nowadays. It was largely idiotproof, and since I was an idiot, that was good. It was basically impossible to spin the tires, and as long as I had ground clearance, I could go places in snow that friends in big 4x4s couldn't. I drove mine through the worst of the '93 blizzard in Virginia with exactly zero drama while the country boys in their big lifted FOWER-BAH-FOWERS MAYUN were making friends with every ditch and tree along the way. Handling-wise, I could get on the power as hard as I wanted in the middle of a turn, even counting for the turbo lag, and it was dead stable and very predictable. It just stayed planted and started to push a bit wide.
    Really there were only two serious complaints I had about it, besides some problems with the interior (the driver's seat broke after three years) and its tendency to eat brake rotors. One was the shift linkage. It was TERRIBLE. Simultaneously rubbery and graunchy and notchy and just crap. Even when it was brand new it was just garbage compared to the rest of the powertrain. I had owned two Toyota Celicas before I got my GSX (a '86 GT and an '88 GT-S, both with a five-speed) and their transmissions were heavenly compared to the one in the GSX.
    The second...was the turbo lag. Ermahgerd, the turbo lag. You could measure it with a sundial. If you didn't keep the engine screaming high in the rev range, which minimized (but didn't eliminate) the lag, and you romped on it, you were sitting there waiting...and waiting...and waiting...and then HOLY SHIT you were grateful for that AWD system because you got all 195 horsepower in the back of the head all at once.
    I got rid of the GSX after a bit over four years and 90k+ miles when I got tired of squeezing into it--I'm a fat guy--and traded it in on a '96 Ram 1500 which I kept for twenty-one years. Whatever happened to that beautiful blue Mitsubishi, I just hope it gave the next owner a lot of pleasure and ended up quietly rusting in a junkyard somewhere instead of getting riced to hell like so many of these have been.

      The 14b on mine spool'd 13psi (More than Stock by 1.5-2psi) by 2500rpm.. My other car has an Evo8 20g on 24psi which Spools around 4000rpm. What lag exists there on a stock 1g. The stock exhaust limits these cars, but laggy by no means

      @@RallyLancer95 I had the 1990 GS Turbo front 2wd. The color was called Maui Blue Metallic. It was my first brand new car I was 18 years old. I remember exactly how much I paid for it, $14,625. I loved that car.

    Doug you can't seriously tell me you don't know what an equalizer is. It's not just a series of weird levers with pluses and minuses on them. Many many cars had them from the factory. I am disappointed and slightly embarrassed for you that you did not realize this. Unless you are just pretending?

    I had ‘90 Plymouth Laser turbo and that was very fast for the times. Traded it in for a white ‘95 Eagle Talon TSI AWD. Felt like I was driving a Ferrari. I was so cool… 139 mph top speed and fun in the snow. Sold it with 130,000 miles on it for 5 grand. Extremely reliable.

      To be fair you'd have to stare directly into the highbeams to confirm that in person, it's a lot easier to spot in a video.

      I always ask people this question,if you were having a house(insert about anything here,Shed, Car,boat,Engine, Piano etc) built and all your hard earned money was going into it, would you rather have a builder that was sloppy and didn't give a rats ass or a builder that was OCD? I'm going with OCD and everyone i ask does too,EVERY TIME. really makes you appreciate those weird folks that have extra attention to detail.

    That is absolutely gorgeous! Inside and out! Seriously 👏 👏 👏! I had a 93 laser, my favorite car ever. It looked at least that good, but that was in 2000, and had a new paint job! I had very few mods, 3' from turbo, boost gage, blow off valve and it was doing high 12 sec 1/4. It was awesome.
