    Just wondering if this is normal -- sculpt in high res, then retopo to use the multiresolution modifier. Any reason why you don't sculpt using multires mode from the very beginning? It's confusing for a beginner like me.

  • @Ponlets
    @Ponlets 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    ok now tell me why without any polygon changes with using remesh at 4 subdivisions that blender will go from smoothly sculpting in real time to a heavy delay where it wont show the sculpt until after you let go of the mouse

  • @zackrobat
    @zackrobat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi! Why not use the multires modifier from the beginning? Then you could go back and forth in resolution the whole time and sculpt all the high detail while still controlling the larger structures.

    • @sway71
      @sway71 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has to do with the memory that's allocated for each layer. Any time you use a modifier you should remember that Blender has to keep track of the state before and after the change. The multires is special as it's like multiple modifiers (one per layer), but it also has to keep track of where each vertex is for each layer to allow you to go back and forth between levels. There's another video by Grant Abitt where he tests out the technique he learned from CG Boost that covers this. Definitely recommend you take a look at it, as with some tweaking you can get a mesh with several million vertices with little to no lag when done properly. (results obviously vary based on your computer)

    • @sagethenomad5929
      @sagethenomad5929 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, it's not so easy to make changes to the geometry when you start with multires. You pretty much have to stick to the same topology & keep subdividing. If you start with remesh or dyntopo, you can make any big changes you want, but you'll have to retopo later. It is a matter of preference & it varies from project to project. Some like to start with their topology already mapped out... Others like to feel more artistic & not worry about it in the beginning.

    • @zackrobat
      @zackrobat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I saw the Grant Abbitt video and it didn't make sense to be either. I love his videos and yours, but with multires I'm just confused. It seemed like Grant was saying he has to do a bajillion subdivisions to get enough faces. That's not my experience, even when starting from a cube. And I don't see the lag both of you talk about. Maybe I'm out of line, but could I request you do a video where you actually show the problems with simply using multires from the beginning?

    • @zackrobat
      @zackrobat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh -- and as for the topology issue, I don't think anyone claims multires gets rid of the need for retopology. Like all the other sculpting options, multires also requires that you retopologize it later. I'm sorry if I sound really dense -- I just don't get the objections I'm seeing to multires.

    • @sway71
      @sway71 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@zackrobat No worries! asking questions is how we learn. One thing that might be having an impact is how many vertices you use. If I start from a cube or base sphere and just start subdividing with multires, at a very fundamental level the shape of the object is still that shape, just stretched in different directions. The only way to deal with it is to change the topology, which doesn't really work after using multires, or subdivide. If you get to the point in a head sculpt where you're trying to do the wrinkles around the eyes or add skin texture, it can become a problem if you didn't already have the topology dense enough at the beginning. Another example: You have a sculpted face that's 500k or more vertices when you decide to open the mouth. You can bring the lower lip down, but now you have a very low poly section between the lips. Do you subdivide a few more times so you can just sculpt the inside of the mouth inwards? Now you have a multi-million vertex mesh. Let me know if this was helpful! Feel free to test how many vertices you can sculpt with no modifiers vs subdividing over an over with multires.

    If you plan on having more than several thousand faces/verts in your scene or project you're working on in Blender..you're gonna want a PC with more than 8GB of RAM and a capable processor
    my older PC wouldn't allow me to get beyond 200k without running into lag in the viewport.
    NOW...with 128GB of RAM..I've easily had more than 50 million faces in a scene and only used half my memory with no problems in Blender at all..
