    Oh, I use lentils when Im making spaghetti sauce or chili. I sub in lentils for half of the ground beef to save half the cost on the ground beef. If you sort of mash up your lentils, just a little, a lot of times it goes unnoticed in all that sauce.♥️🇨🇦

      Finely chopped or shredded veggies also work in meatloaf, chili, sauce, or taco.

    I cut most of my ground beef recipes in half with brown lentils. For dishes like Shepards pie I add Lovage to increase the beefy flavour.
    Lovage grows like weed in most places. In summer, I chop up leaves fine, freeze in ice cube trays- makes perfect amount to toss in for any lentil-meat recipe.
    I used this stategy at 1/4 lentils to start then increased up to a half in cabbage rolls. This was how I was able to sneak it past my husband who loves anything drowned in tomato sauce.

      Lentils are said to cause flatulance...
      Have you experienced that as a cause of substituting them in your dishes?

      @@patriciaheraty7380 Flatulence happens when your digestive flora lacks the correct bioflora. If your family is new to lentils or beans or you have gone a long time without eating them... introduce lentils in yellow lentil soups first as they are easiest to digest. Then work up to more challenging lentils like green or brown. There is also a herb seasoning that decreases bean and lentil flatulence but I am too far north and was unable to grow it successfully. There are also supposed to be ways to cook lentils or beans that reduce thier gas producing qualities. Am sure Google will know. ❤️

    Just became an empty-nester and find that some of my bills are being reduced automatically. It felt so good that over the past month, I've started actively penning ways to save so that I can close my debts and be free within the next five years, when I retire. Thanks for all these tips.       Make a big batch of beans in a crockpot. Divide into smaller batches, I do about 2 cups each and freeze. Very cheap meal.

    I keep canned beef and canned ground beef in my winter "blizzard" pantry. It works in most recipes and tastes just fine. Nobody in my family except me likes Spam or tuna.
    Vinegar will also soften your clothes. Add about a cup to a full load at the rinse
    I too use the heavy cream powder, the buttermilk powder, AND the cheddar cheese powder!

      Another great use for vinegar is when your plastic shower curtain gets yucky, put it in the washing machine with just a bit of detergent and a cup or two of vinegar. Comes out like brand new.

      I only add about a 1/4 in the front load washer and it works great but if I had my top loader I might add 1 cup. It softens but also gets rid (kills) of any damp clothes mildew smells

      Doesn't anything with fat in it go rancid? Like powdered cream?
      Even nonfat powdered milk doesn't really last that long. Less than a year

    Excellent suggestions. One warning about the ramen: I tried storing different brands at different times. ALL of them tasted rancid after a few months (less than 6) storage. I presume it is because they are fried products and the oil residue goes bad. An alternative is to stock some flavor powders and just buy rice noodles/pho noodles or bean thread from an Asian market. Those types of dry noodles can last forever and don't need cooking: just dump them in water and they rehydrate.

    Try making a dish called Mujadara (also spelled Mujadarrah); it's a Mediterranean dish made with lentils, rice, and caramelized onions. So tasty and so inexpensive to make! Lots of recipes online for it. It's one of my favorite vegetarian meals or can be served as a side dish.

      We love it. Growing up it was a Friday staple (non meat day). Mum says it’s 3 ingredients, couldn’t be easier. Brown lentils, rice, diced onion.

    Taco lentils! I love them equally to taco meat. I dice up onions and mushrooms and cook along with the lentils, then add a package of taco seasoning once cooked.

    When I was in grad school, every extra cent I had went toward tuition and books,so I ate a LOT of lentils. One of my favorite recipes was for lentil loaf. Sort of like meatloaf, but even cheaper than hamburger was back then.

    Canned meats should be number one. There are so many more than you mentioned, I buy canned meat, but also home pressure can chicken, beef pork loin, bacon, sausage, etc at a much lower cost.

    I had ramen in my cupboard (for probably about a year) that was loaded with larvae that became pantry moths that were very hard to eliminate. I now put things like this in zip lock bags as a precaution.

      I used to bring home anything with flour and freeze it for 24hrs and then put in a ziplock bag. Double insurance. I put dry beans in a plastic bag also.

      Another way to store and prevent infestation is to bake dry goods (flour, white rice, maybe legumes - obviously not sugar or you will get jaw-breaker candy).
      Bake starting with a cold oven at about 375°F/200°C for about 2 hours.
      Bake in a CLEAN large glass jar with the lid off. (You can use pickle jars or any big jars, you can also use smaller jars, but it's more work.)
      Be sure to disinfect the lid and put it on the still hot container after you take it out of the oven. Bonus: that will also give it a vacuum seal.
      I thought about doing small jars in recipe amounts, that way you can just take a 2.5 cup jar and make one cake, pie, or whatever without breaking out the bigger jar...
      You can dishwash, bake or boil in water to clean the jars - sadly that usually requires electricity, so be efficient and use your oven for double duty.
      My mother used to have the oven full when she used it - bread, dinner, sometimes a cake... all at the same time to save on electricity and to justify using the oven...
      Quick edit, the Singapore Food Agency says to bake rice at 140°F or 60°C for 20 minutes. It can be spread on a baking sheet and then be put into containers after.

    I never used to like canned vegetables but I now have lots in my emergency pantry. What convinced me was the time that I was away on vacation and my fridge/freezer died. By the time I came home and discovered this, all the frozen foods had to be thrown out. Canned foods last!

    Some ideas for lentils: spanish lentil stew (with some type of meat, bacon or chorizo, rice, carrots, onions, bell peppers), mediterranean lentil salad (with bell peppers, onions, cucumber, boiled eggs or cheese cubes served cold in the summer), lentil burger, lentil balls (as sidedish for pasta), lentil bolognese (as meat substittute), lentil cake (sugar, flour, polenta, eggs, oil, cinnamon, ginger)

    Another way to save on daiy items is to make yogurt in an Instapot. After the initial investment of buying an active culture yogurt, you can freeze your homemade yogurt in ice cube trays (then wrap in saran and store in a freezer bag). I just buy regular 3% milk to make yogurt, I strain it using a coffee filter to make a Greek style consistency. The liquid that comes out is whey, which can be used for many different things. My dog loves a little bit added to her food, its a great source of protein 😊

      You can buy a small plain yogurt on sale or even active vanilla and get great yogurts. And if you don’t have an insta pot, $5 garage sale slow cooker does a great job also.

    I use lentils to make a vegetarian bolognese sauce, put them in curries or mix them with veg and mince to make a cottage pie, as you can use less mince.

    I have never even thought of powdered heavy cream.... Thank you! I have honey, canned meat, then I keep lentils nuts oats choc chips flour butter in the freezer and I keep coffee in the freezer too. I love Nescafe dark its addictive tho : /

    We love to eat Mejadara. It is made by cooking rice and lentils. It is a Mediattrranean popular dish. Super for vegetarens too. I always add some fried onion cubes, cumin, salt and peper. I am from Israel and this dish is very common to many households.

    I am in the middle of a 7 Day Meatless Meal Challenge and made a Lentil Cottage Pie the other night that when Cranberry Sauce is eaten with it - it id delicious! I will be making it again. It has lots of protein, veggies, minerals and vitamons so the meat was not missed.

      I hear you. There are a lot of starches on this list that drive up blood glucose. While I appreciate the effort to find inexpensive, shelf-stable sources of nutrition, we all need real, fresh food to be healthy. I was told no more than a half cup of starches per day. So, not much pasta, peas, corn, quinoa, rice, etc. I am not diabetic, I’ve got other metabolic issues, so food is one place where I cannot cut any corners.

      @@yvonneconte3040 Pretty much everything except maybe canned meat, jerky, coffee, tea. IF you have diabetes, almost everything else is a no-go from this particular list. This list is mostly for prepping, and staying alive if things go crazy. heh Pasta, sugar, rice, legumes and anything with carbs is pretty much out for Type 2 Diabetics. It seems to be different for Type 1's, from what I've learned over time. Not every body is the same, though.

      You can do it, it’s really easy! Especially doing raw pack, where you basically just stuff chunks of raw meat into a clean jar, add a little salt if desired, add water to 1” from top of jar, and put in a canner. Process according to the directions in the Ball book. It seems intimidating, but it’s really simple, and it slows you too but meat when it’s on sale for a great price, then store it without worrying about your freezer going out.👍🏻

    Speaking of lentils: I am not a fan of Indian food, but there is a "maa ki dhal" recipe that is pretty tasty. It is basically an Indian chili which is rich, creamy and satisfying without being spicy. Just leave out the chili powder and green chilies.

      'Rajma' is a bean dish and 'dal makhni' is a lentil dish. These are two other lovely Indian dishes. The chilli and pepper content can be individualized as per your taste.

    So easy to cook dried beans, soak over night, then cook in slow cooker. I do a big batch and then freeze in the portions that I will use. Lentils cook faster than dried beans and IMO are tastier.

    Thank you for the explanation of product dating. I preach this to people all the time! So many people discard perfectly good food under the mistaken assumption that it's bad because it's gone past the date on the packaging. The smell test is the most reliable one.

      I tell people the food can't read the label so it doesn't know it's supposed to be "bad" now so it just carries on being good

      a cabinet ....I decided to try brewing a pot of coffee with that and the coffee is perfectly fine . When I was a kid there were no expiry dates , and my mother taught me how to decide if something was off . It was really helpful and saved money .

      Since having Covid, I don’t feel like my sense of smell is as reliable as it used to be. Some days it’s fine, other days it is just “off”. 😢 so I have to be careful when I check foods.

      You can’t smell botulism but if the can looks good and sealed the contents should be safe though more mushy or tasteless after a long time.

    I just had a lentil salad with cut up fresh spinach, red onions and tomatoes with lemon juice (spices) it was pretty good. Lentils with rice is delish. Lentil patties are a good thing too…I make up my own teas. I buy tea filter bags and buy bulk Davidsons]’s teas / Earl Grey and Chamomile 🙏🏽🙋🏻‍♀️👍🏽

    Cook your lentils and add 1/2 cup or a whole cup to half a pound of ground meat. It stretches the meat and your family won't know they are in their, you can use green or brown to better hide them. There are recipes on line for making lentil burger's I haven't tried it yet. Top ramen won't last more than a year, the noodles are still good however, the little packages of seasoning go rancid. Peanut butter is a good one to have along with jelly learn to make your own crackers. Due to a very tight budget right now we are only eating out of our pantry. This weeks menu is a lot of baking potatoes with different toppings. I saved small handfuls of chili, and beef with gravy, it's dinner this week. If you find a sale on Spaghetti sauce in the jar, get a couple and put it on the menu for twice a month, with your pasta. I know people think it's bad but, have a container of lard, it can sit on the shelf for awhile. Flour, water and a little lard can make terrific dumplings with what ever broth bones you boiled down. Turn off your lights the heat is on.

      I make a cracking vegetarian savoury called Cheese & Lentil Wedges (recipe on request). You bake it in a flan tin, it makes six substantial portions, can be eaten hot or cold as the protein in a lunch or dinner, freezes and reheats brilliantly. Oh, and it costs pennies.

    About the pasta, they get weevils (small crusty bugs). Maybe it's bc of where we live. I live in the state of WA.

      Nope as a flour product weevils will infest pasta. I individually bag the packages in storage or freezer bags. I reuse the bags. I used to get pasta free or for pennies, so using and reusing plastic bags wasn’t a big expense. I put the bags in the freezer after use for 24 hour after washing just to be sure nothing is transferred.

    FYI - wheat was found in the pyramids along with honey. Some of the wheat was planted and it grew crops. Hard to imagine any plant growing after 2,000+ years.
    Beans, just a few thoughts. Have white beans or lentils and fee like a quick soup of addition to a means with out the cooking time. You can put them in a blender (I would use a small coffee bean blender) and then add to hot water and a bullion cube for a fast soup (5 mins or less) or add to other dishes to increase the protein and carbs.
    You can also use a slow cooker or insta pot to cook 1-2lbs of beans and freeze. For the slow cooker, I would soak them the night before for faster cooking but they can be dumped into the insta pot as is. Freeze what you done use in 1lb bags like you do leftovers, they should keep in the freezer for at least 3+months. Quick and easy to use from the freezer. If everyday for 7 days you cook a different bean type you would be able to have a different been every day for 1-2 months. Since it’s not meat, you can reuse the bags if desired. Those bags would easily last for a year+ of use.
    Dollar General $1 sale items
    12/3/23-12/9/23. This week at Dollar General there is a Folgers coupon for $0.75 of Folgers instant coffee and they are good for the $1 instant coffee with 7 packets. That’s $0.25 for 7 packets of coffee. This would be low cost if you have a guest and you don’t drink coffee and have no coffee pot or for travelers who are ok with instant coffee. If you combine this with other products and use the $5 of $25 coupon you get it for even less, $0.20.
    Though off the coffee topic the (DG) Betty Crocker muffins pouch for 6 muffins is $1 with a $1 cash back on 3. That’s $3-$0.60=$2.40 and $1 towards a future purchase but if you want to think of it as towards the muffins $2.40-$1=$1.40/3=$0.47 or $0.08 a muffin. They have several flavors (triple berry, blueberry, etc).
    There is also Old El Paso chili or taco seasoning for $1.25 buy 5 get $1 off, combine with the $5/$25 it now costs $0.84 each. The deal is spend $6 get $1 off, must buy 5.

    Gain detergent 8oz, $1x20%=$0.80/16=$0.05 a load, remember front load washers only need 1 tablespoon of detergent ( there are 2 tablespoons in 1 liquid oz). With a larger container you can pay as low as 2-4 cents a load, this is great for road trips and conserving money but you need detergent. Save the container for other uses or to reuse the smaller container in your small laundry area.
    There are hundreds of $1 items great for everyday use and Christmas stocking stuffers and decorations that can be had for $0.80 each with the $5/$25 coupon, much less than the dollar store. 64 red and white balloons for $1.60 use some for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, July 4, and Birthdays (20 for each holiday in groups of 3-5 would add a lot of festivity.
    Look for these item in the app for DG. They usually tell you how much stock you DG has but that can change, I once got to the store to find all 5 of the items I wanted in someone else’s cart 😢.

    Cook lentil then add taco or chili seasoning. Cook a bit more to get flavors to set. Use as beef chili or beef taco meat is used. Vinegar can be used with water as a rinse for hair. It will strip built up soap or hair spray. Allow to set on clean hair 3-5 minutes then rinse with clear water. Use a couple of times a month for a healthy shine

    🙏 Thanks for all the information. For the chocolate chip or any chocolate on sale I buy a large quantity and put them in 2 freezer bags and put them in the freezer. A year later it still tastes fresh. Lentils I make soup, stews by using potatoes carrots and onions in it. This is my first time seeing your video. I will check out others. Thank You.

    All the lentils! I basically use it in place of ground beef in a lot of recipes: lentil shepherds pie, lentil “meat” sauce for pasta, even lentil burgers (though I’ve found them to be more work than their worth haha).

    I make flatbread from red lentils. I soak them for 3 hours and then drain (1 cup red lentils and 2 cups water). Put in blender with almost 1 cup water and cook like pancakes in non-stick pan. I toast them in a toaster over and put almond butter or peanut butter on them.

    If i didn't have an Instant Pot I wouldn't like dry beans either, but it's been a game changer. Also cooking a meal using completely frozen meat. What else can do that? Love the Instant Pot

I looked into getting one, but can already do everything, except sous vide and slow cooking, with my existing utensils. I'm very tempted by one of the smaller slow-cookers, though.

      Except for kidney beans you can put beans in a new coffee grinder and just add the powder to water and a bullion cube or stock to make a creamy soup. I also add salt and pepper to taste. You can add any spice/herb you like. Cooks in about 5 mins in the microwave.

    Hi dear, thanks for your useful sugestions. With lentels some veggetarias do a type of hamburguers, mixing with soy protein, like carve, put some onios, garlic, even tomatos and spices, mix everything, so you can prepare a large amount, and then ffroze them. that is a Pakistani recipe.
    or you can prepare the lentel with less water, so they became dry and put ir on the side with rice.
    Even you can putt in water the lentels for some time, then dry it out, and toas it with a litle oil, add some spices, like parika, and salt, and then you have and snack

    For my emergency pantry I have lentils, beans, rice, nuts but otherwise I wouldn't touch them unless soaked at least overnight to remove the naturally occurring phytic acid which causes digestive issues and joint pain, in many, eventually. I'll have to see if I can find heavy cream powder, I've found whole milk powder, although milk powders are toxic, for short emergencies they'd be OK.

      Just a heads up, powdered cream does not last forever. Plan to use the entire amount within about 6 months. I got some towards the end of winter to make hot chocolate mix and by early fall the powdered cream had gone rancid.

    We make our own dried meat. In our country we call it biltong and I guess it is like your jerky. We also make dried sausage and we call it droëwors. We make it in a food dehydrator that my husband built. We keep it lasting longer by vacuum packing and sealing and then storing in the fridge.

    Lentil soup. I cut up lots of celery, carrots and onions and boil them in about 3 cups of water. I add frozen spinach (because that's what I use-I'm sure fresh would be better. Also a can of beef broth. I boil those together for a while until I can smell the celery, then I add the lentils and boil until they are tender. I also add another 3 cups of water just before I add the lentils. I usually use 1/2 bag baby carrots, 1 bunch of celery, 1/2 red onion, and a handful of frozen spinach. 1/2 bag of lentils. I used to boil everything together, but it wasn't as tasty.

    I heard Powdered Buttermilk needs to be refrigerated. It can go rancid. For Lentils, try making Dal and serve over Rice. Or use in soups.Also there are recipes for lentil patties/bean patties.

    (Abby typing) Lentils, lentils, lentils. There are many kinds and uses. I even watched a documentary on youtube just called "Lentils." You can use brown lentils with rice or make Greek soup and add apple cider vinegar at the end. You can use the reddish ones for pureed soups or even make bread out of them. Type in keywords like "lentil flatbread" "dal" "lentil tacos" etc. I watch Indian cooking videos for tips and tricks. Hope this helps.

    Lentils, while I do make lentil soup, we also really enjoy lentil loaf (think meatloaf), lentil sloppy joes, Shepardess pie (think Shepard's pie but use lentils instead of beef. Tacos, enchiladas, bolognese-the possibilities are endless.

    Since I don't like cooking dried beans from scratch, I do the work all at once and can a wide variety of dried beans myself, so I have the convenience of canned beans. My pressure cooker holds 14 quart jars, and if I do two canners at the same time, I will be getting more than 20 quarts at a time.

    Make a side dish of lentils. Stew some onions, canned tomatoes and lentils till lentils are soft. I usually add some pancetta or dry ham for taste. It can be a side dish or main dish if you add some fresh cheese, like cottage cheese and salad. You can put lentils in water for 1-2 hours before cooking to cut the cooking time

    Whole food plant based cooking sites and TH-cam have lots of ideas for lentils. You can make taco filling, lentil loaves, burgers, meatballs, etc. I use red lentils in pasta sauce instead of ground beef.

    Blend lentils into flour, then sub part of the wheat in a recipe with the lentil flour. There are lots of recipes on the internet using lentil flour, which has other names in other languages/countries/cultures.

      Dry Lentils can be ground into a flour using a coffee grinder. Get one strictly for just beans, no coffee unless you want every thing to have a coffee taste.

    I read someplace that, except for acidic foods (tomato, mainly), the expiration date on cans can be extended by several years. Are you familiar with this?
    I have a pet peeve re expiration dates. Why do we have to play “Where’s Waldo” to find them on products? Also, if it’s a dark package, don’t put the info in black (looking at you, Fresh Express salads).
