Nice video, I would add: - Instructions on making more of the saturated solution, since it will evaporate with time, making the crystals grow. - Note on protecting it the solutions from dust and temperature rise - Note on painting some sides of the crystal, waiting for it to dry and then painting the others, to avoid finger smudges/marks. - Note on how to deal with the waste? Potassium Alum is rather nontoxic, Copper (II) sulphate is not that hazardous, but Potassium ferricyanide is quite pollutant.
Thank you Marcelo! Very helpful additions... have you posted some other interesting things on TH-cam? Would be happy to see them and more helpful notes, too!
In fairness, any scrap copper and vinegar can get you the needed Copper(II) Sulfate. Can even add some 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (standard stuff for cuts and scrapes) to speed up the oxidation and dissolving of copper. This makes Copper Acetate, since vinegar is Acetic Acid. Just make sure the copper scraps are solid copper. Plumbing pipe should be fine, but some wires might be copper plated steel, so it wouldn't yield much. US Pennies work, but they have to be older than... 1982 I think. US Nickels (5¢) also, because they're made from "Cupronickel" alloy which is like 65% copper. Of course, you'd _then_ need to dry (evaporate) the newly made windex-blue colored solution, which could be done by heating it. It'll form lots of micro crystals, which is the Cu(II) Sulfate. From there, just follow her tutorial on how to make the solution. The Cu Sulfate is just easier to buy, honestly, but I just wanted to prove that at least THAT ONE is actually able to be made with "average home ingredients" 😁 (if you're in the US, finding a couple pennies old enough should still be quite easy heh)
This vid brought back some great memories, despite sucking at chemistry in high school, I did manage win the crystal growing contest by growing a 4 inch copper sulfate crystal in 2 weeks. I even helped a couple of the "wiz kid" students grow some nickel sulfate crystals who failed after 2 weeks, and did it within 24 hours. :)
@@corujabiruta3732 The copper sulfate crystal was very durable. The nickel sulfate got over grown and filled the container, and stopped looking like crystals. Had I stopped the process early, would have had better results, but I did have a result.
The blue one looks quite like copper(II)-sulfate-pentahydrate, so that would be alright. Sealing the surface prevents the crystal from dissolving when getting in contact with water.

I made the blue one, the Cooper Sulfate, in my lab at university, starting from copper wire. Basically, we reacted the copper with Nitric Acid (HNO3). This first phase is extremely dangerous, since some nitrogenum reacts with the oxygen in the air forming toxic gasses. Then we used some Sodium Hydroxide to neutralize the acid and force the solution to have Ph>7. By doing this, our solution only had Cooper Hydroxide inside it, since the nitrate reacted with the sodium. Then we forced the Hydroxide to become Oxide, by heating up everything. At this point, we filtered everything and put our copper oxide into a solution of Sulfuric Acid. They reacted and here we have our crystal salt, ready to grow. I and my colleagues had so much fun! Our teachers were so pleased to see all of us so interested in this! Chemistry is truly fascinating, and i highly suggest taking this path if you want to truly understand how everyday life works. I have taken this choice only 8 months ago, and i swear to god, never have been so happy to study.

Basically, we reacted the copper with Nitric Acid (HNO3). This first phase is extremely dangerous, since some nitrogenum reacts with the oxygen in the air forming toxic gasses.

At this point, we filtered everything and put our copper oxide into a solution of Sulfuric Acid. They reacted and here we have our crystal salt, ready to grow.

Hey! That's amazing! I'm a chem student myself but I wish I knew about these easy crystal experiments to suggest my anorganic chem teacher. Now it's too late but I think I can still get the necessary salts to make this happen ^_^
We did this experiment in year 9 lmao. I'm also going to study chemistry at uni in September but would have thought this was a little basic to do after GCSE
the music is actually perfect...as mystical as the phenomenon of 'crystal growth' itself.
People are negative nellies with their silly comments. I found this video very informative, extremely well done, and the music was fine. I guess people just need to find fault cuz they're unhappy with themselves.
It’s the strange music that’s the secret ingredient ;
Thank you for the demonstration! How stable are these crystals?
I have those ingredients on my shelf totally
My question is, how the rope remains the same size after the stone became bigger?
QUISQUILIAE TUBER yeah that makes me feel like it's a lie
the crystal grow around the rope. you can see it afterwards, when she cuts it out, the rope is now inside the crystal.
Because she is fooling around. Fake
What do you even mean?
My question is, were you expecting the rope to grow?
I’ll do that with salt and sugar instead
Is this possible?
Δημήτρης Βτσδς yep
Δημήτρης Βτσδς yes

Will it works?Did it works?
Music sounds like I'm about to watch a SCP: Illustrated video

Is no one gonna talk about the number of hands she had!?
