I recently uploaded a guitar solo to my socials that I wasn't really happy with. In fact, I thought nobody would care. A couple of days later, I was faced with Steve Lukathers opinion on my solo.

Luke is one of the nicest guys in the biz… but also one of the most honest. This is worth its weight in gold.
Yes, I met him numerous times during the 90s and 2000s - no BS!
Dude I stumbled on your Insta page last night and I’m hooked .. you play with such emotion and the tone from the Tele is insane ….. guitar music is in safe hands 🙏🎸
Richly deserved, brother! I've been loving your tones and tasty playing.
When I discovered you and saw your one of your videos a few months ago.You blew my mind. You've got the magic.Your note choices and phrasing is awesome, uplifting and inspiring. I'm am intermediate guitar player and Tele's Rule!
Congrats Joeeeey!
Super happy for you dude! You really inspired me! I am definitely that guy that is always sitting on something because I feel like it’s not good enough or ready.
Just seeing this now, but how amazing is that?! Congrats, man! I totally get your excitement. This is a “killer” thrill! Well deserved! ❤
CONGRATS MAN!!! and.. i think our solo is reeeealy great!! you catch the movement in the chord change VEEERY GOOD!! this is the' money' on this progresions!! you got this!!
Wow! Congratulations Joey! Had „Killer“ in my head as well as i heard your Riff for the first time.
Enjoying your channel.
Keep up the great work! 🙌
Thanks
Love your playing Joey Jones
Joey, that is an awesome solo. It is so easy on the ear and full of richness and emotion and best of all it's musical. Great job!
Thank you for the kind words ❤️
Just bumped into this accidentally. Absolutely amazing solo, very nice riff and sound. It's like a refreshing breeze to hear someone who doesn't want to impress with all the virtuoso bells and whistles, but plays melodies and tells a story instead.
Fairplay man! Keep up the good work.
Love the playing and the tone!
Luke is my all time favorite player. Your tone and phrasing are definitely inspiring much like Luke’s “killer” playing. Keep it going!!!
The video was a little long but that solo (and tone) was perfection man. Steve knows what he's talking about. Instant subscription.
Thank you for sharing that awesome experience with Steve Lukather's comment, your cool Tele solo and for the encouragement!
Great melody, great sound overall so intense. Great !
Waiting for a complete full album.
I like your Song!!
Dude, that really did sound killer 🔥
I love ur solo! I know exactly what Luke meant ... you have a style and your playing tells a story - keep it up!
Congrats! Luke is the man. That's amazing. 🤘🏽
Midnight riff brought me here, this solo about tuning down made me not want to miss any video you make. I love solos, but your riffs kicks azz.. been playin' more riffs after i subscribed here
Midnight Riff gained me a lot of attention from riff lovers.. it’s gonna be a song someday 🙏🏻
@@joeyjooones we’ll wait patiently, take your time!
Great job,Great song, Great solo, support
Killer message!
Greetings from Nova Scotia Canada first of all let me start with your much deserved Congratulations! I literally just came across your channel today after being on a huge Steve Lukathur kick and searching for videos of the “Running with the night” solos in it read the title & thought of my own achievements in guitar music over the years and the curiosity of what would it be like made me click I must say that I can definitely understand your thought process regarding the solo although that first 30 seconds is the perfect example of a Nirvana style solo and as soon as you hit that power cord that leads into the real meat of that solo I went from thinking ok where is this going and what cake is this the icing for? (A Zakk Wylde reference to a quote of the solo is just the icing on the cake and his soup recipe references bunched together you’ve got all kinds of flavours and it’s just what ingredients you add to get the final product some recipes need it some don’t sometimes you need vanilla and other times you need chocolate cheesecake) and as soon as you hit that low note and start really playing 1) I agree with Mr. Likathur it’s killer and in todays guitar community being very ego driven and Yngwie like all speed no control and just about showing off something that really builds up and surprises you halfway through really focusing on “the Gilmore effect” putting the emphasis on making each note count and using emotion to add emphasis and using the bait and switch extremely slow & simple buildup is really the difference between impressively complex, fast & technically good solos and great solos and your bravery to push the limits of repetition in the beginning just far enough that it’s a Barr or two away from losing interest right at the moment the tension builds to the braking point and the way you use that to build up to make that change come to a really genius “you have my attention now sir” moment as the solo reaches its climax while not overplaying or underplaying it either isn’t the norm in “todays guitarist” and it’s not exactly easy to walk that line of not enough/too much while going right to the edge without going over it!
You deserve that compliment!!!
I remember watching that video when you posted it here in youtube and I loved it - i am way more into that kind of slower melodic solos than crazy shredding...and hey, if it is approved by Luke...well done and well deserved...
Hey man, Mike here, just a regular drummer, stumbled across your channel. I'm not surprised people dig this, I love the riff, your tone and the tele, sounds freakin awesome. Luk taking the time to leave such a great comment is epic, absolutely end-game! 🤘
Seems like yesterday I was watching that star licks video of Steve lukather. I mean I must of whatched it a thousand times. Just whatching him explain his gear and listening to the tones and presets he had changed my whole perspective of music. Nothing wrong with other types of music and creativity. He took it to the highest level allowed. It just don't get any better than that. It's very cool of him to compliment and encourage creativity especially when he's the master. Awesome
I'd be thrilled to get a Joey Jones compliment on something I played
Hi Joey - I stumbled onto your channel a few weeks ago. I found your approach, playing and musical feel to be excellent. I subscribed. A thumbs up from Luke is the gold standard as far as I'm concerned. Good for you - enjoy it !
Thank you!
Oh man, that's so cool. One does not argue with the Luke 😁👍👍
Bonjour from France,
Very nice solo.
Congrats... you deserve that compliment.. I am so glad I found you page ... I'm inspired and your music is amazing .. do you have a band I'd love to hear more !!
Yes, band is Shady Belle - our first single RISE AGAIN is out everywhere. Spotify, Apple Music, etc..
@joeyjooones awesome ! You are a great player checking out the band asap!
I think that song & riff was killer! Not to mention the tone was off the charts!
Sweet!
Frankly, I don't how come you only have 2.1 k subscribers here on YT.
Almost invariably, when I listen to your playing I turn up the volume. I know it's hard to say who are among the best guitar players on the Internet, because there are so many and still counting. But to my taste your guitar playing sounds outstanding! You're one of my favorites! I really like your style! You're awesome!! Keep it up, Joey!
Wow .. congrats brother
me personally, i listen to you for your heart felt riffs and tasty solo's not all about how many notes can i play in 10 seconds. solo's make up such a short, small part of a song. make every note count like you do. Go Steve. Oh, and i loved it too, if that means anything.
It means a lot!
Was so happy for you when I saw that Luke commented. Also, Doug Rappoport giving compliments is a sure thing you doing something right!! 🤘🏻
I'm a fan of Luke and a part-time session player myself, but just to get my own opinion on the solo without knowing Luke's take on it - just to not get influenced by what he'd say thus coming up with mine, I stopped the video at 1:20 and wrote this right away!
I would say that I'm inspired by both the solo and your chord progression on this one! That was great all in all!
Please make course/lesson/tab / tutorial for your solo!!! really like your style
Total Fan man! Nice Licks. I'm inspired to play again.
Not that you need it but talk about a reassurance/validation from a legend…amazing
This makes me wanna get a tele.
I would have FAINTED. as far as i am concerned, ❤you have made it 😊
That's a fuckin awesome solo!!
Nice one buddy, and just goes to show we are not always the best judge.
Similar thing happened to me years ago with Greg Howe (on facebook of all places) with something i put up - got shared and woke up one morning to a friend request from the man 😳 Still FB buddies and obvs still talking about it 😅
Hell yeah! Well deserved.
i've never heard of you before today but that solo has the same passion that lukather layed down on the time is the enemy song
on the tambu album......it gave me goosebumps!!!!!
It sounds great. I love solos with feeling but hate solos that are all about speed.
I dig the moral of the story, the overall message, and what the song and that riff have become. 🤙
Steve Lukather is a master at creating riffs and hooks that live in your brain for decades/forever. A good comment from him is gold.
I agree with Luke. The riff, and the solo were indeed "killer".
Thanks man ❤️
That lead is prefect. When I played in C sharp on my friends gs tele, she said “was that you!” Yup.
Fun.
The solo fits nicely in the song.
Love this story. Luke is a beautiful person as well as in my top three favorite players, and influences.
Lukather and Matteo Mancuso are my two most favorite guitar players.
Great video. Artist never heard this message enough we all suffer with imposter syndrome. Thank you for your story and all the great riffs and solos
Thank YOU for watching man!
Hey Joey!! You just nailed it again... In words and thoughts this time. The riffs in question are good-- not great -- J.J stuff, yet way good enuff to release.
I am stuck in the same boat, rehearsing numerous songs over and over before even pressing record for a personal demo...Duh, I'm starting now!
PS, I recall a Pagey style rhythm riff you did back when I first subscribed, and the then you brought in one of your BIG note - I own this moment solos... Well; nobody can create those moments every time!... Nobody... Not even you.
PS;2, I bought a S. Lukather Ibanez Roadstar - Marine blue with gold hardware - back in January 84, I still got it after 500 thousand miles.
Sometimes people think you can't do something just because they think it's not you style, and in really you don't show it because for you is basic practice. Happens to me many times in my line of work and life (not music, but it's the same)
Honestly, it really is one of the biggest compliments. He really is one of the high arbiters of quality. He’s in the pantheon. And, he’s also right. Love your work so much.
@DucatiDave68 100% agree with every word you said. Well done Joey Jones. Good enough for Steve, good enough for me too!
KILLER solo ...................
If it's good enough for Steve...... Not much more you need than that. So friggen cool
That message is for me as well, today.
By the way, I agree with Steve. Cheers.
From :50 seconds on, it’s pretty good. Up to the :50 second mark, I was like “this is boring AF.” But then from about :52 on, it’s good. I went from “this is boring AF” to “here we go! You should have started from there!” 😂
Nice video, man. Always cool when someone unexpected like Steve shows up and gives you a minute of their time.
Nice to know.
Dawg!
Steve is the Man end of story bloody genius and command of the geetar
Anything Joey plays turns to gold really. He's amazing.
This was not a live recording.
If it's nice for Steve, it's nice for sure for me..❤
Good solos should be melodic with fast burst. That is how I play and the solo you played. Don't listen to haters. It is not how many 16th notes you can do in a bar. Speed is nothing without feeling. Music is about emotion.
Almost 5 minutes just to get to the point? Having said, it is a good solo. Nice Tele too.
I’am also a big Luke fan but Luke was drunk that day
Nice solo dude👍🏼
Luke is a GOD
Nice riff. Just as a thumbs up. Build up a bit more power in your left hand .then your bends will come together as well. But hay keep practising.
i really like what you did with RISE AGAIN ,continue the good work and the singer is awesome with the lyrics !!!
I Absolutely love every thing you play. Im going to name my 1st born after you. Sorry I don't know who this other guy is.
Skip to 4:20 where he gets to the point.
Dude ....STEVE LUKATHER !! 😮
I know right?
He was right.
I love that song. You must have some insane standards.
In all seriousness, you should remove the word "bad" from the video description. You're a badass player. It's a disservice to your skill as a guitarist to put that disclaimer in.
4:41
Man, I’m in the Death Metal band Fever and I say great things about every one of your videos. I’m holding my breath til make a TH-cam video about me. I started 30 secs ago and I’m turning purple so please hurry man!!!
Dude you definitely dragged this video out but good for you!
Reminded me a lot of Satriani but late, lifeless Satriani
du solltest akzeptieren, dass du außergewöhnlich bist...
Ich kenne niemanden, der wie du spielt. Du singst durch deine Gitarre, du bist praktisch eins mit ihr
"Close Enough for Rock 'n Roll" doesn't always get a record deal or whatever, though. It's important to practice the solo before putting out the vid, right?
We are our own worst critics...
There's nothing wrong with this it sounds great..?
Tu solo es increible my friend..
i personally think the solo is that good. make sense for luke to praise.
I like your point about overcoming self-doubt and debilitating perfectionism but, still, it's weird to get a compliment from Lukather and then proceed to shit on the piece he complimented as "not great" and "b material." Unless your secondary point is that Lukather has middling taste, maybe just take the compliment.
You are now hereby required to release every song you've been holding back Joey! Get to it! 😉
Wish I would have seen this vid 3 years ago . Used to sell teach myself 12 14 hours non stop with Steve as my main influence and opened me up to outside playing altered stuff chord melody etc etc. I thought I was ok ..my friends thought I was amazing but would bitch about me playing all day and leave my house when I was playing away. So I gave up and sold my entire rig !!! Oh well. Moral of the story ...Don't listen to your jealous idiot friends!!!! Cheers
It most likely was not Lukather at all. Many people pose as some well known person and it’s not even that person.
Of course it was him. It was his verified profile.
