    excellent tutorial. Tons of useful infos and new modifiers I totally missed. Great.
    I was ready to abandon Max forever. But damn, this new Retopology modifier destroys every other auto retopo tool. The results are outstandingly close to what I'd do by manually retopologizing. Except here you get the result in seconds instead of days.

      I consistently asked him to get the newer versions of max back to the robust improvmenets to the Chamfer modifier to see if he can make use of them and show us some tricks. H enever responds to the coments. His patreons need to ask him about this new retopo algorithms come to max

      @@orphydiancg7759 He does reply sometimes. I myself reply every comment in my channel (about tyflow 3d max plugin) but it is a small channels so far. When I get 20-50k followers, things can get out of hand :) - Im still rocking max 2019, but 2021 seems big step forward with new Chamfer and now with build-in "quadmesh" / "ZRemesher"

    I'm so excited! I've been retopo-ing a lot of old CAD data from clients all day, and it's REALLY useful. I get some errors of course, but mostly it's possible to massage the settings to get clean results even from really crappy CAD. Max is heading towards a very good place at the moment. Great video as usual Eloi, take care!

    Hey, great video! Congratulations! My 3Ds Max (2021 and 2022) doesn't have this modifier (RETOPOLOGY), do I have to enable it somewhere? Or do you have to download some script or plugin? Thanks!

      Thanks Ricardo. retopology was introduced in max 2022 as a separate installer (if you go to your autodeskapp you will see it there). From max 2023, its already included on the main max installation.

    Thanks, this tutorial is very helpful. Just a note though, I've been playing with Retopology today on my own scanned models, and I like the results from QuadriFlow better than Reform especially when there's more polygon reduction involved. YMMV of course.

    I saw your tutorial "Retopology in 3ds Max. Tips & Tricks" with great interest. Thanks a lot for this ! I have an important question for you - how do you fix the problem with the texture / UV's in the stork couple after using the modifiers "Pro Optimizer" and "Retopology". Your tips are excellent, but unfortunately I can't get any further. So I ask you for a little tutorial. thank you very much for that!

      You can use or "project" modifier, or tyconform modifier (you can download this one for free, it comes with tyflow). And it projects uv data very well.

    I love the fact that finally we need less programs to do the same type of job, save a lot of time and can improve the final result way more than before. As for the projection mapping that still fails to deliver a good result guess we will still need to use xnormal that it's free and does amazing job on projection the texture map on it

    It's like zremesher in zrbush, but what would you do to cap the hole created by the retopology taht we can see at 16:31 for example ?

    Excellent Autodesk. All I could do with Houdini 10 years ago. You gave people in 2021 8). And you left the old problems that have not been fixed for 20 years.

      Yes sure. XD Houdini 10 years ago with a retopology like this one? Houdini with bloom in viewport? with PBR importers? Lets just say that the improved pathdeform in Houdini 18.5 its 5 times slower or more than the 3dsmax pathdeform. (Not starting here a useless debate here about what program is better, they cover different needs, but saying that the improvements on this version was available 10 years ago in houdini... its just not true, Houdini 10 years ago was even more focused in just procedural fx than now, and this uupdate of 3dsmax is more about modelling).

      ​@@andvfx This was achieved by Houdini + Python 10 years ago! You can read the technical part. just google "Practical Quad Mesh Simplification EUROGRAPHICS 2010"
      I didn't say which program is better! I said that Autodesk "does not fix problems that are very many years old."

    Thank you for your video. It might be worth mentioning that the new modifier is extremely resource-hungry. On my i7-6820 2.7 GHz, 16 GB RAM machine, it can no longer be used for more than 50,000 polygons. Always waiting 15 minutes for the the message "IPOPT optimization failed". What kind of machine did you use for the video, maybe I need an upgrade? I think the poor performance is the reason that the tool has to be installed separately.

      It works pretty good on my old laptop. its a 4 cores 2.2Ghz i7, with a gtx 960M, and 32 gb of ram. Its already 5 years old laptop. If it fails normally its for a bad topology or problems detecting hard edges. First thing you should do is run a mesh cleaning modifier, then prooptimize to your target resolution, and run retopology with detect hard edges off.

      in 2022 it comes as a separate installer. you will found it in your autodesk install app. in 2023 and forward it comes included with the basic installation.

      Flowline is an inhouse tool for liquids and particles simulations used at ScanlineVFX. Works inside 3dsmax.

      Currently all the data (UVs, smoothing groups, etc..) are lost. This is something we want to improve in the future.

    Why do you prefer to use Pro Optimizer before stacking a retopo modifier and not let it do the entire job ? Is it just a matter of speed ?

      If the point is to create a lowpoly version, the algorithm on the retopology will be faster if has something closer to the target, than lets say, needing to evaluate a 15M poly scan to create finally a 10K model.

      Make sure to run first a meshcleaner to avoid nonemanifold polys.

    I'm quite new to 3DS max and I can't seem to figure out why I can't see faces and edges once I add modifiers to my mesh? The only time I can see the faces is when I'm on the editable mesh modifier after hitting select by element.

      Retopo was available on max 2021 and later. Because 2021 had no sdk break with 2020, you can make it work on 2020 with some “tweaks”

      Yes sure. Retopology comes always as an independent installation. You should find in on your autodesk acount, just install it!

      I just did some research and the answer is : YES
      - Go to Autodesk website
      - Log in with your account
      - Click on your profil in the top-right corner
      - In "my account" section > select : "Products and Services" >
      - In the list, you must develop the 3ds Max band by clicking on it or by clicking the ">" button (located on the left of 3ds Max Logo)
      - At the bottom, look for and select "Updates and extensions"
      - Scroll and download : Autodesk® Retopology Tools v1.0.0 for 3ds Max® 2021
      - ENJOY

    I just wish the unwrapped UVW's would transfer over correctly to the new mesh properly? Or am I missing something here?

      Right now uvs are not keep when creating the retopo. However, you can use uvw seams in retopo to keep them, so its easy later to reassign uvs.

    For me the subdivide modifier set to adaptive curvature takes like 45 minutes(sometimes 3Ds Max even crashes) to subdivide a 8k polygon mesh. Its not useable for me on a ryzen 3700x

      Lumbabumba Schumba Adjust the values to dont get a too dense mesh.

    Buenas quisiera saber si hay alguna forma de escoger la retopologia, ya que cuando uso el modificador las costuras hechas con el uvwrap se pierden y cuando lo llevo a substance painter no reconoce el modelo HP para coger las normales. Saludos

      JORGE luis No se si entiendo la pregunta. Por un lado no se porque substance painter no reconoceria el modelo hipoly por perder las uvs. No uso substance, pero diria que puedes seleccionar manualmente cual es el modelo hipoly,no? Por otro lado, ahora mismo las uvs se pierden, en el video enseño como reproyectar uvs. Finalmente, si quieres hay la opcion que retopology tenga encuenta las seams de las uvs, para crear la nueva malla, cosa que puede ir bien si jecesitas reproyectar uvs sin distorciones en los seams.
