I contracted polio in 1952 the age of three. I spent a year in Warm Springs Georgia at the Roosevelt Polio Clinic away from my family most of that time. I remember row after row of kids suffering just like me. It was basically hell on earth but I got through it. I wore braces on both legs until I was 13. I walked until I was 56 then the nerves in my legs degenerated again and now I am in a mobility chair. I am 74 and still kicking. I never gave up and that attitude serves me well to this day.

My mom’s stepmom actually had polio when she was younger. Luckily nothing happened to her, getting paralyzed, etc. but she does have slightly weak muscles. She also got the vaccine which did help.

Once my dad was born the epidemic was over, but he told me stories of seeing kids on crutches and he would ask his dad (my grandpa) what happened to the kid. His dad would reply, "Polio". Scary disease.
What's arguably even scarier than polio is the fact that polio survivors were completely denied mobility-device accessible public ANYTHING until they literally had to FIGHT for it in the 1970s and onward, routinely institutionalized, and routinely denied adequate education just because neither society nor the government prepared for all these people being long-term mobility impaired DESPITE ALL THE RAGING EPIDEMICS OF THIS FREQUENTLY LONG-TERM MOBILITY-IMPAIRING DISEASE. How awful, incompetent, and ableist can people get?

I lost track of Rosemary but not in thought for Frankie he past some years ago from cancer this go`s back to the 50`s with my 2 BEST FRIENDS I haven`t forgotten you 2 ... RA 68 HELL FIRE

It was scarier back then because of what it did to the kids. As a parent, you are much more afraid for your children than you are for yourself, no one wanted to see their kids permanently crippled. It appears that Coronavirus strikes down the elderly like me, but I'm not afraid to die, I had a very good life. Young and healthy people have immune systems that are able to fight it off, which of course is a very good thing. The Cvirus will make it's rounds across the globe for some time, it will eventually end and a vaccine will come out for it in the next year to two. You're confusing denial with freedom of choice - we should encourage people to the death to get vaccines, but it should never be forced on anyone, because doing so would be a slippery slope: it opens up the path of forcing other types of things on people.
