You use the term ‘Pioneers’ but you don’t specify what you mean by it. Is it safe to assume you mean soldiers involved in the construction of fortifications, digging trenches, maintaining roads, bridges and railways etc?

Yes, that is what Pioneers in the German Imperial army did, they were essentially Field Engineers.
