Today I took a Model 1883 Reichsrevolver out to the monthly BackUp Gun Match. This is an 1894-manufactured gun (made at the Erfurt Arsenal). It is a single action only, six-shot revolver chambered for the 10.6mm German Ordnance cartridge. The first type of Reichsrevolver was adopted by the young German Empire in 1879, with the significantly shortened model here adopted in 1883. Both models do also have manual safety levers - unusual for revolvers - but that wasn't relevant to the match today. These revolvers were front-line German service handguns until replaced by the Luger starting in 1908.
For more details on the revolver, check out my full videos here:

When in 1871 Second German Empire was founded, standard pistol was prussian M50 muzzleloader smoothbore percussion pistol, 15 mm caliber. In those german states, being in 1866 enemies of prussia ( Bavaria, Saxony, Württemberg, Baden and Hessen - Darmstadt) surely also rifled percussion pistols in austrian 13,9 mm existed. But only Bavaria had in 1869 decided, to buy centerfire 11,5 mm Werder rifles, carbines and pistols , all singleshot. When in 1870 war broke out neutral Belgium stopped trading firearms to Bavaria, only few bavarian soldiers had Werder weapons. After war, Mauser M71 became first german sevice rifle. Transforming Werder guns for 11mm Mauser was not good, so Bavaria canceled buying belgian weapons. A large number of carbines had been transformed into pistols, the rifles ( as noted only a part of ordered rifles came to Bavaria) was given to forrestry, prison, customs personal. In Saxony in 1872 or 1874 a strange Revolver in 10,4 mm was introduced, an enlarged S&W Nr. 1 or 2! Caused troubles with German Gouvernement, in Bavaria not , for reason of a bavarian privilege. But when Mauser offered a Revolver , german army decided, to create an own Revolver, the M79 was the result, the M83 the improvement. For test reason, a few Colt SAAs in 10,6 Deutsche Ordonnanz had been bought. The testing soldiers and officers said: A good Revolver! But for reason of either money or national pride, the german Army invention was bought. In german navy the Reichsrevolver replaced Colt Navy and british Adams Percussion revolvers in .36. Was in Prussia called.35, because english inch ( Zoll) is 25,4 mm, while prussian Zoll ( inch) was 26,2 mm. Handle of Reichsrevolver M79 had similar size and shape as M50 pistol.

It's kind of amazing that the Colt SAA is such a popular firearm even though the much more practical S&W Model 3 is 3 years older.

Well, you weren’t the first, but you weren’t the wurst.
Great to see that a 19th c revolver can still compete. By the way, “backup gun” in German is Ersatzpistole. So this was an EP Wettbewerb.

For me, as a german, it is very funny to hear you talk german (and not too bad, i admit) - I think its a good thing to make a little fun of each other (for example german vs american) i still see some respect for the other side in this. At least, one tries to think or talk like the other one, and to try to keep yourself in perspective of other people or countries, at least can help to understand each other. (excuse my english, as i said, i am german, and its been a long time since school... :) )
