Today I took a Model 1883 Reichsrevolver out to the monthly BackUp Gun Match. This is an 1894-manufactured gun (made at the Erfurt Arsenal). It is a single action only, six-shot revolver chambered for the 10.6mm German Ordnance cartridge. The first type of Reichsrevolver was adopted by the young German Empire in 1879, with the significantly shortened model here adopted in 1883. Both models do also have manual safety levers - unusual for revolvers - but that wasn't relevant to the match today. These revolvers were front-line German service handguns until replaced by the Luger starting in 1908.

That cracked me up
This is the first win he has racked up? Congrats on the win Ian!
Not actually too bad either, for what he was working with.
He still managed to beat eight people - you have to wonder what they were like.
Success is all about setting parameters.
@@AshleyPomeroy They were using FP45 Liberators
@@AshleyPomeroy Yeah, it has to be *embarrassing* to lose to someone using a single action revolver with bad ergonomics when you're shooting a modern automatic pistol.
13 guys went home having to tell they lost from a guy in a pickelhaube shooting a 130 year old revolver.
That's really good (and true).
I would need several stiff drinks after that myself.
Not just that. A 130 year old revolver that was already outdated by the time it was introduced (most revolvers in service then were triple actions)!

19th-century guns don't stress the reload speed because you'll have to wait for the smoke to clear anyway.
After emptying the revolver draw your sword. Swords never need reloading.

Watching him convinced me to buy a couple reproduction WWI British hats. Yeah, we will get strange looks....:)
Used to get that for guns, not hats. Bring a match lock or a wheel lock to the range and people start gathering around. Semi 1919, 1917, mg 34 all do the same

I think these days, they're only shocked when he brings something approaching a normal backup gun.

The cylinder axis pin was supposed to be used for pushing out the empty casings but they were usually carried with a separate rod so as to skip disassembly for reloading like Mr. McCollum did. It was also considered a secondary weapon to one’s sword during its service.
Which means this revolver was indeed a BUG. To the sword.

Tune in for the next episode of Forgotten Weapons, where Ian unexpectedly travels through Belgium to get into France...
In Germany you sometimes still see sometimes men with such helmets. In some towns socalled , Historische Bürgerwehren ' exist. Up to about 1850 this had really been militias, but today they are pure ceremonial tradition keepers, wearing historical uniforms, appearing at historical/ Events and parades.
I feel like we need an update on Ian's hat/helmet collection
the amount of smoke is a sight to behold! epic
They need to add a saber segment of the match to go with these old revolvers.
Do the other competitors do a sweepstake about what weirdness Ian will be bringing?
They probably hurt too much for rational thought.

Willkommen bei Vergessenen Waffen
*vergessene Waffen
It was a long time since I learned German. I thought "bei" required the dative case of vergessen.
@@skrymerU That's true normally (I think, haven't thought about formal rules in a long time), but "Vergessene Waffen" in this case is the name of a thing and doesn't change its case.
@@tellur808 ok, make sense.
Bei vergessenen Waffen is in some context correct. In this context: ....bei , Vergessene Waffen'. would be also correct , because ,.....' is refering to the channels name Forgotten Weapons', while vergessenen Waffen refers to some somehow lost weapons.
Love how in the second round the official yelled: "los!"
(Oompah band music intensifies)
Well, you weren’t the first, but you weren’t the wurst.
Great to see that a 19th c revolver can still compete. By the way, “backup gun” in German is Ersatzpistole. So this was an EP Wettbewerb.
We call this VOLKSMUSIK around here, Kamerad
eeeh semantically Reservewaffe would probably be a better translation, since Ersatz moreso refers to a replacement
BUG matches are some of my favorite videos
I feel the same... and was able to track down the Match Director and get his approval to recreate the match down here in Australia (Although given OUR laws it is more of a "Safe Queen" match than a true BUG one..) He generously provided the "Rules/Divisions" and the scoring methods. Lots of fun! People enjoy being given a place to shoot a structured match with an otherwise unused gun. Our most exotic arrivals however have just been my 1912 Steyr Hahn, and a friends (gorgeous) C96 Mauser....
Ausgezeichnet! Danke Ian!
Vintage Warfare: “I feel a disturbance in the force!”
Ja das ist gut !
Nicht nur gut, sondern sehr gut
It's kind of amazing that someone approved this design 10 years after the Colt SAA...
This is 10 years after Smith & Wesson Model 3. Sure, some Yanks have made a revolver that ejects all the rounds at the same time for quick and simple reload, but true Teutonic warriors need not such mechanical assistance. Or even ejection rods...
Especially as the SAA was already obsolescent when it entered service.
When in 1871 Second German Empire was founded, standard pistol was prussian M50 muzzleloader smoothbore percussion pistol, 15 mm caliber. In those german states, being in 1866 enemies of prussia ( Bavaria, Saxony, Württemberg, Baden and Hessen - Darmstadt) surely also rifled percussion pistols in austrian 13,9 mm existed. But only Bavaria had in 1869 decided, to buy centerfire 11,5 mm Werder rifles, carbines and pistols , all singleshot. When in 1870 war broke out neutral Belgium stopped trading firearms to Bavaria, only few bavarian soldiers had Werder weapons. After war, Mauser M71 became first german sevice rifle. Transforming Werder guns for 11mm Mauser was not good, so Bavaria canceled buying belgian weapons. A large number of carbines had been transformed into pistols, the rifles ( as noted only a part of ordered rifles came to Bavaria) was given to forrestry, prison, customs personal. In Saxony in 1872 or 1874 a strange Revolver in 10,4 mm was introduced, an enlarged S&W Nr. 1 or 2! Caused troubles with German Gouvernement, in Bavaria not , for reason of a bavarian privilege. But when Mauser offered a Revolver , german army decided, to create an own Revolver, the M79 was the result, the M83 the improvement. For test reason, a few Colt SAAs in 10,6 Deutsche Ordonnanz had been bought. The testing soldiers and officers said: A good Revolver! But for reason of either money or national pride, the german Army invention was bought. In german navy the Reichsrevolver replaced Colt Navy and british Adams Percussion revolvers in .36. Was in Prussia called.35, because english inch ( Zoll) is 25,4 mm, while prussian Zoll ( inch) was 26,2 mm. Handle of Reichsrevolver M79 had similar size and shape as M50 pistol.
It's kind of amazing that the Colt SAA is such a popular firearm even though the much more practical S&W Model 3 is 3 years older.
"Ready? Los!"
I love how the BUG match buddies go along with Ian's silliness
2:30
The funny thing about this yelling is that there were Not a single german word besides „Ja“,“Ich“ and „bin“😂😂😂💀

I love this content, Ian. Please keep it up!
The picklehaube and the gas attack brought flash backs to the trenches....that's a damn nice helmet, I assume it's part of your personal collection.
Pickelhaube ( literally pickaxehood) was a popular nickname . Official name was simply Helm mit Spitze/ helmet with point. To prevent accidents, gunners had a ball.
Range safety is very important, glad to see Ian wearing his helmet.
Appreciate the morning video......one of my Favorites !!!!!

Legend says that if any german hears Ian speaking german, he will instandly grow a mustache.
Thank you for the moments of levity. The folks at the range have such a great sense of humor as they put up with the antics competing with such an outdated revolver in modern competition. The helmet just adds to the fun tone of it all.
"okay, unload and show clear"
"Hold on, I gotta get my unloading tool"
Love watching these with extreme vintage weapons!. Amazing to see how well they all perform being 100+ years old.
"[The sights] are not very forgiving of rushing"

From the sounds those targets stayed HIT!😵
The single-action mechanism and the 10.6mm German Ordnance cartridge add an authentic feel to the experience.
Love seeing this stuff! These old guns dont deserve to sit in a case for the rest of their days!
The whole German shenanigans were hilarious. Loved the sound of the shots.

05:53 nice to hear that that particular gun was manufactured in my Hometown 🙂
Herrvorrragend!!
Congratulations on getting 1st in the Revolver division! All that hard work finally paid off. 😆
Ian should make a short with Preußens Gloria March im Hintergrund.
March! In württembergian region of Germany the Gaisburger March is very popular, it is a dish of boiled beef, Bouillon, potstoes and Spätzle noodles.
"Unload and show clear!", "Give me five minutes..."
Using two hands? For shame.
It takes two hands to handle this revolver......
The fact that custom, 19th century, black power, foreign rounds are manufactured commercially in Florida just makes me love this country.
Old revolvers like that were intended to be used one handed, which could explain why it was hitting your thumb when shooting it with both hands.
For me, as a german, it is very funny to hear you talk german (and not too bad, i admit) - I think its a good thing to make a little fun of each other (for example german vs american) i still see some respect for the other side in this. At least, one tries to think or talk like the other one, and to try to keep yourself in perspective of other people or countries, at least can help to understand each other. (excuse my english, as i said, i am german, and its been a long time since school... :) )
On this episode of "what weird shit has Ian brought to a BUG match", an almost 150 year old revolver.
I finally found a use for a BIC pen!
That's an impressive pickel.
The smoke and the bang on that revolver.
I missed Ian speaking German in combination with the Pickelhaube so much! 😊
FACT Black powder also has the extra benefit of a huge smoke screen with every shot fired
I think that's the first time I have seen Ian get 1st in his division. I mean, he always brings some weird gun, so it hardly reflects his shooting. But I mean, who would have thought first place in revolver division with an 1883 Reichsrevolver! Good job Ian!
Why stop at the helmet you should have went with full military garb of that era!!! 🤠👍
"I'm sorry sir, but on this range it's full cosplay or no cosplay."
In the introduction Ian says the revolver isn't really a backup gun, but everything about it screams that it was never intended to be anyone's primary weapon.
130 years old. Should get bonus points for that Ian 😊
Love this!
Your videos are always entertaining, but when you're showing anything German related it seems to become a step above, really cool and they seem to be experts in making cool stuff 👍
The German lines, even though I'm not a German speaker, sounded pretty cool as well and the language itself sounds really cool
The long ones were "fractured" German, made up silly sentences, but the short ones were legitimate German.
@dinsdalemontypiranha4349 I was able to pick up a few things he said, and I figured as much about his German not being perfect, since German is an incredibly difficult language to learn. To me it's probably the coolest sounding language, and I've tried to learn, but I'm probably to old for it now lol
i did a quick look on a ammo serch engine there is still 10.6 you can get but it is pricy!
Imagine all the obscure brass he leaves behind.
Now that was a fun one.
Das ist fantastisch!
The BUG range officers must be the nicest and most patient of humans. Putting aside the bad German, they put up with the weirdest variations from the standard safety rules for Ian.
I had a good laugh. Guten Tag to you from Germany!
It's 6 am, I'm having my first cup of coffee and Ian's wearing a Pickelhaube-------------it's going to be a good day.
