Lmao.. I was grip on this show, it took Mike a fkn week to recover . Housewives everywhere needed extra pills. I think the guy that booked her got fired.. Oh the days when musicians actually made statements
Brings me joy to see how old this comment is, because she STILL has this beautiful energy. Saw her a couple months ago and it was the best concert of my entire life
Gotta hand it to Mike Douglas...he wasn't afraid to put diverse rock acts on his show and mix it up with stiff old Hollywood types. Patti Smith legendary progressive pop rocker, here baring her soul like every performance she's done for the past 45 years.
I saw her at CBGB New Year's Eve in 1977 where she did Because the Night for the first time and Springsteen did a surprise walk on and joined her. Also saw her in 1975 or 76 at The Cellar Door in DC- front row seats. Have since seen her 3 or 4 times in NYC. Most amazing was July 2001 Lincoln Center, where she did a 20 minute elegy to Vietnam, and in 2003 at Battery Park City, where she performed "1959". In 2005, she did "Gloria" in Central Park, in her 60s, and she was hotter than most singers in their 30s!
I saw her twice, she was about 68-69 years old. First time was in an outdoor concert, 6 months later I saw her in a medium size theatre, completely full and sure was one of the concerts of my life. Some sort of a religious celebration of rock&roll and freedom! God bless her!
I saw the PSG at the Golden Bear (Huntington Beach, Cal.) sometime in '76 and on that tour she had fans following her for every show on that tour! That's not bad for Californians at that time. She was the very essence of punk rock long before any band got awarded with that title. Yeah, lots of spitting from the audience and her too, and was very loud. Just good garage rock.
@@Pimp-Master I have Loved PSG from the start. Growing up in the midwest area I never got to see them, and I worked for a concert promoting company in Evansville , In. So sad ,,, out of the thousands of concerts I have been to I never got to see her/them,,,, Years later and I still Love her wacked out music.
it be my wet dream to perform this song with her stage presence at karaoke one night, and sing out that song in all it's glory. Patti will remain one of my favorites till i grow old and shrivel.
I saw for the first time last night in Bath, and part of me was expecting a slight disappointment compared to the energy on her records from younger years - I couldn't have been more wrong . She really has still got that punk rock energy at 74, and knows how to connect with her crowd - thank you to whoever gave you to world, you are inspirational!
@@revwahfair Uh, they DID? Fred DIED very young, so if you consider that to be walking away, so be it. As for Patti, she never walked away from anything. She is a multi-talented artist, singer, poet, author, photographer, producer, performer, and probably more talents that a neglected to mention here. Walked away? This lady is SO successful, busy and still in demand, I don't even know when she has time to sleep!
exquisite. Saw her once in concert, 1978, just as a roommate's "Horses" was dislodging me from ubiquitous prog-rock dirges. (Mothers Day, 1978, Tower Theater - Patti's mom seated right across the aisle!!))
when she was singing this i was in grade 8 going thru the worst hell of my life being bullied mercilessly all year by a couple thugs in my class.what doesnt kill you makes you stronger i guess, thats what they say right?it made me stronger somehow,im 56 and im determined to find out how it improved me lol.i know i'll figure it out.
The spirit of this music is the epitome of what great rock and roll is. Powerful. Raw. Sexy. Happy and angry at the same time. PSG doesn't get enough credit. Just fantastic.
Every time I watch this it gets better and better. It's probably my favourite PSG song. I've been into them since they came out in 1974 and they still sound original and great.
I have seen Patti two times this year, performing Horses Live during the Horses 40th Year Tour... I love her as she is today, and I'm sad for what I lost when she was young
I love Patti. I never saw her live. I hope to one day. I would trade most of the concerts I've seen just to see Patti once. I wish DVDs existed of her shows.
The funny thing is how everyone commented on how "fresh" this performance (and Patti) was, when in fact it dates from April 1977, more than a year after "Horses" was released (and six months after "Radio Ethiopia"). No one seemed to realize (or care?) that she'd been actively involved in music (not to mention poetry, art, etc.) since at least 1974.
People would assume that a guy like Mike Douglas might be square, but he was a musician and so by definition is hip to the cause. This song gives me shivers and tears. Thanks for your post, REALLY Finest Kind
He had such a great show. Mike always had a diverse panel of guests For all we know the rest of the guest panel here could have been Robert Goulet and Henny Youngman
You could depend on Mike Douglas Show to feature rock acts experiencing their first glimpses of chart success, appearing at the nearby iconic Tower Theater.
Douglas had John and Yoko on for a week right when they were controversial and getting in real government trouble. Some would say DOuglas was brave. I say, Bravo.
I was a grip on this show, Mike gave the musical guest booker lots of latitude but it took Mike 2 good weeks to get over Patti, we had Lou on once or tried to but he was to smacked back and kept spitting all over the set.. my 2 favorite guests on mid day talk show.. the switch board almost blew up after patti with irate pill swilling housewives complaining. Free Money is the best track off the first album but although probably in a minority here, overall I prefer Radio Ethiopia as her best and most original album.
I probably should've liked the songs that Rolling Stone thought were cool, (Gloria), but I would play Free Money and Redondo Beach all the time, the uncool songs, I suppose.
I believe Patti was wearing boots given to her by Muhammad Ali. Fortunate to see her do 40th anniversary of Horses in Cleveland, saw her in 2000, waited 24 years due to missing a '76 show at the Cleveland agora that was sold out.
