Many people didn't get Radio Ethiopia, too different, too metal. I always thought it was wonderful, a contrast rather than a continuation of Horses. Some wonderful songs.
it wasn't liked because it was ''too different'' but the exact opposite, it was extremely commercial compared to her debut with the exception of 2-3 songs, having many accusing her of selling out, which I completely disagree with. Radio Ethiopia is a great album that stands to toe with her other 70s works
" And then there was that voice : rich , rasping , simultaneously old + young , a banshee wail , a whisper , fragile , assured , sensuous , confrontational , sexual , defiant , other-worldly , deep , resonant , soulful , timeless , passionate , spooky + beautiful " Nick Johnstone ( 2012 )
Oh freakin' Jaysus, Joseph and Mary, this brings back memories. I was the ripe old age of 20 in 1976 and I had first seen Patti in LA on the Horses tour. This tour she played the Santa Monica Civic and sadly it didn't go as well. She appeared coked out of her gills and damn near fell off about a 10ft high stage onto a concrete floor. She did just that at another date on that tour and broke her neck. She came back on fire on the Easter tour and things have been great ever since. At this time I had "discovered" Patti the year before, and Robert Nesta Marley that same year and the Velvet Underground/Lou in '74. They changed how I view and perceive the world. Thank you to all!
This is my favorite Patti Smith album, Radio Ethiopia, her most diverse, expressive and heaviest release. I bought this and the Ramones Leave Home about the same time. Horses is a great album, but this was taking things to the next level for Patti.
Brilliant I've got all their albums . This is what punk rock was about, the freedom to express yourself freely in any way that you want. Not to uniformly follow the crowd.

I love her live, I think she is by far my favorite. I should probably be listening to men, giving the transsexual situation going on in Hollywood but I love her.

Metal? Nope. Wrong.
Se con Horses seguiva un linea stilistica ben precisa, con Radio Ethiopia va a ruota libera..ed e' sensazionale!
Always loved Radio Ethiopia. Very heavy.
