There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

It's called the 'Asiatic Vespers' because in the past historians sometimes compared genocidal outbreaks of violence to the more famous 'Sicilian Vespers' of 1282. This was where Sicilian rebels overthrew and massacred the French colonists who controlled their island at the time. The riot that started the massacre began during 'Vespers'- evening prayers, hence the word becoming a historical euphemism for mass-murder.
also oddly similar to the name of a practice in germany involving eating bread for dinner, instead of a cooked meal, "vespern". I wonder if it relates to that earlier meaning of evening prayers.
An anecdote to add on to what Joe said. Growing up, my conservative father and his liberal younger brother would get into arguments at every family gathering. As I outgrew my youthful conservatism, something occurred to me: if everything my dad believed were correct, the implications on my uncle's life would be negligible; if, on the other hand, everything my uncle believed were correct, the implications on my father's life would be incalculably large.
Stuff like this makes me feel like there is something wrong with us as a species, at the very core
9:15 IIRC, there's a text from about 5th century of a guy complaining about how people are mispronouncing words, so the ancient Latin got reconstructed from that.
About Milgrim. Those specific experiments are popularly misrepresented. Participants would often refuse if they were told "you just have to do this" or were threatened or commanded. But they would proceed to the apparent death or agony of the "patient (actor)" if they were told they had to do this to advance medical science or the greater good.
Love the show. I think I’ve listened to most. I really think they need to do Aleister Crowely and Michael Savage/his son would make for some great episodes! I’d say Helena Blavatsky dedicated ep too but it feels like they’ve covered her a couple times. Maybe the I AM cult who worked with William Dudley Pelley and the silver shirts. Hell maybe just do a behind the bastards on Mt. Shasta
Crowley turned up in some of the L. Ron Hubbard episodes, but he'd probably be a good subject for his own one. Not as bad as most of the people they talk about on here, but still pretty gross and manipulative.
Already been covered by last podcast on the left, I don't think Robert would have much to add.
I also believe that in general, interrupting someone's thought process is a good thing to do. Most people don't WANT to be bad people, but you can get them to sign on. During a genocide, the pro-genocide forces want to make it so that you don't think about what you're doing.
I remember back in the day on Cracked, one of the articles that someone was interviewed for talked about how they had very nearly shot up their school, and they just happened to run into a teacher who was nice to them outside and changed their mind. Because that derailed them. You basically force someone to choose to do the thing AGAIN, and they might make a better choice next time. It's easy to say you're down to murder some jews when you're in the barracks int he morning. But when you're in the middle of it, and something happens so that you have to say "Okay but do I REALLY want to murder these jews?" then the answer might be no.
Only YOU can stop genocide
Man, I really think we’re overworking Smokey the Bear. Poor guy was probably already chewing his fur off over the California wildfires. If genocide is added to the mix, we might need an extra animal.
Now do Netanyahu
"Please don't participate in an act of genocide."
Fred Flintstone: Yabba-Dabba-Oops.
35:03 i wonder if asking the people who come to give there full names what effect that would have one this decision matrix's like ah mr gestapo you say you want to take these people ... what is your name rank whose your commander?
37:44 mmm sounds like every soldier in ever war ever ...
1:20:40 an injustice to one in an injustice to all
1:23:32 remember kids is a strange man in a van offers you genocide ...just say no
That's it, he's gotta bribe me with Candy first.
Gods, the people I've seen in the Seattle area alone (much less elsewhere in the state where I do not feel safe existing as a trans person) who don't get that the massive shifts in climate we're struggling through are already directly harming us and will only continue to get worse if they only care about local politics are infuriating. It's infuriating everywhere, but particularly when it comes from this liberal isolationist mindset coupled with a refusal to use what power we have to change things on a larger scale, or help those who are being attacked, or even just the bare minimum of voting for politicians who care about things other than demonizing unhoused people and courting tech industries.
57:23 its also why the klan wear hoods ...
"Low on the totem pole" is a super racist phrase, my dude.
Aryanization, also genocide.
that's right it is! deconstruct white identity!
