  • The Super Eagles have been placed in Group D for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, joining familiar opponents Republic of Benin and Rwanda, who are also in Nigeria’s group for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The draw ceremony, held at the SuperSport studio in Johannesburg, South Africa, also included Libya in Group D.
Under former Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr, the Republic of Benin recently secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Nigeria in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. This defeat was a significant setback for Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes and led to the resignation of coach Finidi George, who had been appointed just a month earlier.
Currently, Nigeria sits fifth in their group with three points from four matches.
The AFCON qualifiers will see the top two teams from each group directly qualifying for the finals, set to take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. As the host nation, Morocco automatically qualifies, leaving one additional team to advance from their group.
With Libya and Rwanda completing Group D, the Super Eagles face a challenging yet navigable path to secure their spot in the continental showcase. Matches are scheduled across FIFA international windows in September, October, and November of this year.
