Im french, and this woman is interviewing while a french minister was invited. That interviewer is obviously a journalist and was very likely trained to be one. From her studies and culture, she knew already the answer to her own question about bookshops. She knew and decided to say it out loud, it's quite terrifying she deliberately wanted to present nigeria, africa and that writer as less cultured and inferior. And a lot of french journalists see themselves as the elite . The writer did so well in the interview without entering in that game.
I don't know if she's actually a journalist or not, but this exercise at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs is so emblematic of the contempt, which is not only racist contempt, but also class contempt, of these French pseudo-elites .
I would like to tell Africans that this unpleasant condescension of this type of French VIP is not only reserved for them, but it is exactly the same towards French people who do not belong to this caste, that is to say to the majority of French people.

Independently of how you support this opinion of yours, it just sounds racist. You don't go to a Italian (or any other nationality, tbf) author and ask them "Do people in your country really buy your books?" unless you really have something against them or their books.
This is why it is so important for journalists to travel and see the world, experience new things and culture. Ignorance is such an embarrassment, especially in that profession.

As a Nigerian, I am very proud of Chimanmanda . The people are proud of you with your sharp with and eloquence.
She not only spoke for her people, but she also spoke for all of us from nations colonized and suppressed by these European countries. Even long after this era was over, their way of thinking and view is still there and a remnant of that time. I'm not saying all Europeans are like this, but there are still those who do. So glad we have people like her.

I have an impression that within Europe this is more of a thing in France. Because of the revolution and how they created an identity on its values and being an example for that they see as good thing to impose their culture on others and still hold very outdated behaviours with their history as modernizers as excuse when the world has moved on on that. To be fair, I'm not 100% sure that the colonial aspect is the only issue. I'm Swiss, we speak French, a French slightly different, and French are arrogant towards Swiss people, Switzerland, I noticed that they are the same towards Belgium, Canada.
For sure, the colonial mindset is there, and is a major aspect.
But there is something more, they see their country as a gift to humanity, they feel a sense of superiority in all fields, science, economy, industry, literature, engineering, social, intelectual, sport, etc...
They give lessons to Germany's economy and criticise them for being to dependent on China. They criticise Germany for not being a good enough industrial country while being much more industrialised than France. They would criticise Finland for not having good enough schools, they would criticise any other nation for anything that they do worse.
So the French superiority feeling is an added layer to the colonial mindset.

You can see that with how the french academy sees itself as the ultimate arbiter of the french language despite more people speaking french outside of france than inside.

As an Indian i completely understand the condescending tone and the intent behind the questions. It's almost as if you are treated like a child. And when they realise you are not a child anymore, they become aggravated or toxic.

I never heard an interviewer asking “Are you a European writer”. Can you imagine how the writer would respond?
There's certainly space for that kind of discussion, talking about identity, cultural essences etc. Decades ago I wrote a thesis titled "Qu'est-ce-que ?" (A great classic, available in all good bookstores.)
But that's clearly not what was going on here. The subtext to many of the questions was, "Are you authentic?" which is patronising and sadly still typical of French punditry.
Some would answer positively. I can think of Stefan Zweig for instance, or maybe T.S. Elliott. Defining oneself as European was an important aspect of cultural identities in the early 20th century, mostly before the great war began.

Her body language suggested that she wanted to climb out of the chair, away from the interviewee, as if she no longer wanted be in close proximity.

The response is as least as stereotyping as the question. The journalist isn't representative of her country. What's even the point of mentioning her citizenship.

You just have to be in France and watch the French media and its dominant doxa, and all those comments are known in Africa, they have news from France and France is losing its reputation in these countries as time flies.

Reuse of the word several times could have been attributed to the fact that she was trying her best not to be too harsh with her expressions during the interview. I don't know how I came across this but WOW! So powerful. She answered every question with poise & rose above the stupid questions, yet putting them in their places. Love it!! I was passing through France last year, travelling Europe for 6 weeks, can't say I'd be in a hurry to return. My least favourite destination. People there are just rude & so is my obnoxious French neighbour. Must say though, met this lovely French couple at the train station, had an awesome chat. We'd told them of our bad experiences in France. All they could do was apologise over & over again for being mistreated, were genuinely embarrassed. So so sweet & we appreciated their understanding. They explained to us they've travelled the globe & loved learning about other cultures, were embarrassed of their own people’s arrogance.

The interviewer looked outraged, so funny to see her face at the end, I didn't know about this author, I love the way she handles herself and just takes everything with ease and answers perfectly back super calmly, even though it was obvious these people wanted her to trip or react badly, I loved it. OMG she's NEVER LIED. Those people in the airport in France are HORRIFIC! I went through something similar. They're just downright rude & nasty. I thought as she did, thinking, the airport staff is sort of your first introduction to Paris & its people. Well, they didn't disappoint. As rude & nasty as they were in the airport, in the city of Paris, the majority of people I met were just as rude. I highly doubt I'll go back for another visit.

I am a white Brazilian lady and I haven' t been in France for 30 years, so perhaps things have changed since, but back in the 90s, I was really upset by the way African and Latin American and other people were treated, even in universities, as if we were lesser people. Also, when coming back from the UK on a bus, the gentleman who had a seat beside mine was treated in a horrific way, just because he was of Indian/Pakistani descent. The man at customs just couldn't believe his UK passport and made the man open his suitcase only because of his appearance.
I'm a white brazilian girl, and I don't think it has changed much to be honest, just by analyzing how much muslim women are harassed in France.
One thing that stuck with me when I visited northern Italy in 2019 was every local expects you to know italian, EVEN IF you are just visiting. It's like "how dare you, coming to this larger than life country and not even having the decency to learn my language". Anyways, they often didn't even bother to establish communication with me besides my English being quite good. They're incredibly disrespectful.
(And I'm "whiter" than most white Italians, I can't imagine how dark skin people are treated there)

People always wanted to make conversation, the language barrier never stopped them from being friendly and talking a lot even tho I very clearly didn't understand. But I was also told that northern and southern italy can be quite different.
And what you are describing is a very real (and weird) thing! I think it often stems from people not being able to speak english very well and counting on you to be able to speak in their language. Definetely had that a lot in Paris.

I think by listening to northerns talking about southerns (specially Napolitans and Sicilians when it comes to criminality) I have formed a lot of wrong opinions about the region. Also I think Elena Ferrante's novels didn't help because people are generally described to be rude and a sometimes violent in her stories. I know this is higly stereotyped now, but yet I feel intimidated to go there by myself (as I am in almost every part of the world to be honest 😅 we hardly feel safe anywhere)

You know when she first asked if Chimamanda's books were read in Nigeria, I thought maybe it was a very badly phrased way of asking if her books are popular in Nigeria. Then came the book store question and killed that thought, like who asks such a strange question. Especially bad after Chimamanda talked about her university time, like what university doesn't have a book store or library somewhere, so just that information should have answered that absurd question before being asked.

Oh wow. I thought it was just me. So, I’m Ethiopian living in the U.S. who was traveling to Norway and my connection was in France, my entry point to Europe. I gave the officer my Ethiopian passport which had my Schengen visa. The guy asked me a lot of questions with a stern face. I explained and I could see it on his face that he was still doubting me. I finally showed him my green card and told him that I’m a U.S. resident. It only took a couple of seconds after that for him to say welcome. I still don’t like that country to be honest.

See, and I think sharing these stories is important because I often find that French people are quick to talk and write about racism in the US. But when it comes to facing racism in France, it’s much less addressed. We know racism is everywhere but somehow, it’s only pointed out in other countries, not our own.

I'm sure there's also a component of racism in their too, but I don't know much about modern relations between France and Haiti.
