In the Good Old Summer Time played by Tom Brier

  • By request! Sorry about the clackity audio; this close to the piano (I had to turn the page and then hold the book open), the audio recording levels are automatically limited to keep the sounds from turning into static. The result is that non-piano noises sound much louder on the recording than they were in real life, so clackity noises of the piano keys which normally you wouldn't notice are now seemingly quite loud.
Anyway, I had received a request a while ago from GoTFCanada1230. He wanted to hear how Tom plays this popular song from 1902. I mentioned it to Tom when I last saw him, but he didn't think he'd be able to play it off the top of his head. So this past weekend, I brought the sheet music (it includes the rarely heard verse (Tom remarked that he definitely didn't know the verse)). The music is by George Evans.
Of course, Tom turns it into ragtime at the end!
You can download the sheet music of this song here:

I am a pianist and I have known and met many great pianists, but this man and the life he brings to the instrument is unrivaled by anyone i have ever known.

I could just picture the early 1900s folk in the saloons with their mugs of beer and whiskey singing and dancing along to it, the women in their long floorlength dresses and bonnets, and men in their tailcoat suits and top hats. All a world from 100-120 years ago

I’ve played the piano since I was 5 years old. I am pretty good, but not this good. This is wizardry. Oml I can only dream of playing like this. This is my goal someday. This is seriously incredible. I have no words.

This is unreal! I don't understand how a person can play like this!!!

If anything, the clacking gives me a better sense of what it actually feels like to play this clunker of an upright.

Wow! I haven't seen this video until now. I love the swing Tom puts on his playing when he switches to double time. I agree fully with cucucachoo's comment.

I was asking, "Verse again?" but yeah he proceeded to just stick with riffing off the chorus.

@@bencarter8324It is something he still says. Even with the brain damage, this was such a common thing for him to say as a joke that he has retained it.

@TurquoiseStar17 Yeah, it's weird for us who grew up in the 20th century to think, "The beginning of the last century means minus one thus... 19! oh wait..." Still not used to the fact that we're in the 21st century. I heard in some time-travel scene a modern-day character say they were going to get "back to the 21st century" and I thought, "Wait, they're set in the future? I thought they were contemporary... oh never mind."

@MsDisneyObsessed Actually, the song on the next page is "In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree". The book isn't sold in stores, I think (I don't recall it having a bar code); I got it back in the early 1990s as a gift for subscribing to either Sheet Music Magazine or Piano Today. It's just called "100 Greatest Hits".

Ron, if he had done nothing more than this, he would be the best. Thankfull he gave us so, so much more. Wishing a healing/ input-interface breakthrough - but in the meantime, Badger Song! - th-cam.com/video/WgmO6NvbG00/w-d-xo.html

really great, awesome! kind of a shitty sounding piano but the player is so talented that it makes one forget all about the substandard equipment
