    At times it sounds a bit like Daniel is either improvising on a blues scale (but not really) or he isn't keeping up with Tom on the key changes. Still, he does a good job, and I don't blame him for being outdone by one of the best ragtime pianists I've ever listened to. If he keeps at it, he could have a very bright future.

      There is a great record by Roy Spangler on Rex records (an extremely rare vertical groove company) called “Medley of Snyder and Berlin Hits” from about 1913 or so, that is the single greatest AUDIO RECORDING I’ve ever heard of ragtime piano improvisation from the original era. Unfortunately it’s also extremely rare (less than 10 extant copies) and has never been issued on LP or CD and is not yet on TH-cam; but I heard it at a friend’s house and with their permission may put it up. It is not to be confused with the Mike Bernard Columbia record of a very similar name from around the same time.

    Seriously, this is such great talent, Mozart himself would be proud of the improvisation and composition on the fly here!! You guys go from ragtime to Broadway, to neo-classical. Can you guys do this stuff with other kinds of music?

    • @Keeper1st
      @Keeper1st  9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      E. Goldie I've heard Daniel play Chopin extremely well... but improvising upon it and changing keys like this? I suppose he could, but he might be lynched by classical music snobs!

    • @e.goldie6143
      @e.goldie6143 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Let the musical snobs whine. They're not composing anything! These guys are composing new music on the fly. That takes brains and great creativity. So even if he can't change keys, which isn't the real issue, his being able to improvise in Chopin's style, etc. would be key.

    • @Keeper1st
      @Keeper1st  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      E. Goldie Right on. If you haven't seen this one, here's Tom making up several arrangements off the top of his head while reading a simple lead sheet. th-cam.com/video/4-o4o_LaK1k/w-d-xo.html -- and if you look up "Brier improvisation" you'll find some older videos where he's truly just making up stuff. There's another called "just makin' it up" I think too. In a couple cases, I've given him music that was only two strains or had an unfinished strain and he just "completed" the works on the fly. I've watched him do stuff like this for 20 years and it's still amazing each time.

      There is a history. I've previously had to threaten TH-cam with legal action to get a fraudulent claim (by AdRev) lifted from another video of Maple Leaf Rag.

    • @sapphonie
      @sapphonie 10 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah, my account got a copyright strike from Warner Bros the other day when I accidentally mislabeled a video as Standard TH-cam license (as opposed to Creative Commons) of the movie "The Matrix" in ASCII text (as an educational trick about video editing). Before I could change the licensing, they took it down. I appealed it earlier today. TH-cam has some serious issues with that sort of stuff.

    • @Keeper1st
      @Keeper1st  10 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      TheSqrtMinus1
      Well, that would still fall under WB's copyright, as derivative works are protected. In this case, however, Maple Leaf Rag is a public-domain composition (as is anything Joplin wrote, as he died in 1917). Claiming ownership of it is absolute fraud, yet there are multiple entities out there that make such claims on TH-cam whenever anyone posts a video of themselves or their friends playing any Scott Joplin music.

    • @sapphonie
      @sapphonie 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah I've always wondered about that.
      Like, for Chopin, when you buy a copy of his etudes, who does the money go to? Certainly not Chopin. Yet they still sell it and slap a big "No copying aloud" sticker on it.

    • @Keeper1st
      @Keeper1st  10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      TheSqrtMinus1
      Yeah, there was talk about this at the ragtime festival last weekend. Tom Brier, for example, was asked why doesn't he put together a folio of obscure rags from his collection, like Richard Zimmerman or others have done. He said he wouldn't feel comfortable receiving money for selling a collection of public-domain works.

      ***** Not at all. The sheet music is marked "Tempo di Marcia". This is march tempo. These guys are renowned ragtime players, playing at a ragtime festival. They know what they're doing.

    • @uiscepreston
      @uiscepreston 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't care what the sheet music is marked. Rag as instructed by its prime innovator and the composer of this very piece is never meant to be played fast. Regardless of what tempo is stated, this is played too fast. Just because something can be played at lightning speed, doesn't meant it should, nor does it mean the piece has soul or the musicians are beyond criticism.

    • @Keeper1st
      @Keeper1st  9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      ***** You don't care what tempo the composer actually indicated? Ooookaaaaaay... th-cam.com/video/judCkMCJgBA/w-d-xo.html

    • @e.goldie6143
      @e.goldie6143 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      No, not really. Ragtime shouldn't drag along slowly, nor should it be rushed too fast. Ragtime can be interpreted in 'common time' or you can pick it up to a spritely pace. Here, the pace is just about right!

      @@STANLIZ4 I knew a great ragtime/stride pianist in New York whose father had to lock up the piano and have her learn to read music on cardboard keyboard otherwise she would have kept playing each new lesson by ear. She played for movies from the age of 9 and was a full big-time professional by age 15. It was the thrill of my life to have known her.
