The project is a dream. Not really possible in the UK because we just don't have the roads big enough and the parts supply. You guys seem to have great knowledge. This is the American dream on wheels. Fantastic.

With the RVs I've driven, if you want to go over the Rocky Mountains, you'll definitely want that 2nd gear to make it down the slopes. 3rd will let the Winnebago run away speedwise and you'll quickly overheat the brakes and put yourself into a deadly situation. Keep in mind too that those things (even modern ones) have zero crash safety. Statistically RV wrecks are rare, but when they do occur at anything over very slow speeds, the results are almost always deadly. Cabinets, fridges, stoves, etc. all disconnect and the passengers plus everything inside flies into the front. The body (held together with thin pieces of wood and no steel) also rips off the frame and falls to pieces.
I love the project but due to the inability for it to handle a crash with the passengers living through it, I'd highly recommend making sure the tires (front especially) are in excellent condition, brakes are top notch, you have excellent engine braking for steep descents, front end is in good condition, etc.

Diesel swap (pre smog years) with an engine brake solves a few major early Winnie issues. Mpg, reliability, and the option to install the engine brake to assist the stock brakes. The onan gennys alone are half of the weight in the rear of these haha. Pulling out excessive weight, losing the split wheels, radial tires ect. Lots of work, but if the entry cost is low and you're already in the Market for a cool or unique rv, these old Indians and braves are awesome candidates to customize...

As another poster put it, Diesels run very lean during idle, you were very lucky not to have issues.
The safe way is just filling it with water, even seen guys fill it with water and burn off the top gas.
Another approach would have been to just run a low psi pump to a FI high pressure sump, but to be honest, the "Drop In" will give you a longer life, and worth the welds.

When coming down a steep grade and the brakes fade, you will wish that you had access to all the gears.

Diesels run lean at idle, they don't have a throttle plate to reduce the air admitted in to the engine. Ie the exhaust contains oxygen. Should of used a gasoline engine.

Just an FYI, sloppy mechanics has noted a literal difference of 100HP and torque by having a loud valve on the exhaust versus a 5 foot exhaust.

diesels put out a lot of oxygen in the exhaust as the run wide open throttle all the time, your better doing that trick with a petrol vehicle. or filling it with water :)
