I swear people have no concept of how wildly different the method of media used to tell the story: live action of eight 40+min episodes that's released as a whole VS a cartoon of 20 episodes of 20+ mins each released weekly. Two very different methods that require unique methods of execution. Also people forget how exposition heavy the cartoon actually was and how the cartoon hinted and implied a lot of heavy concepts for a kids show, but couldn't actually show or explain them in the detail required to flesh them out because it was precisely made for a kids network television company.
The show is streamlining the themes, events while explicitly delving into the ideas that the cartoon only elaborated on in vague and unexplicot ways. Again because it was made for 16 and younger kids, not 12 year old to older people which this show is rated for. TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT MEDIUMS.
The actor who plays Iroh had the right idea when he said that it is not a copy, nor a remake, but a REMIX because he understood the medium of the story (form of media used) is inherent to its method of portrayal.
Again people wildly overestimate the cartoons handling of the more mature concepts - the fact they were even alluded to or just plainly part of the narrative was enough to warrant the fact it effectively delves into those things because ot was for kids explicitly and how it had to exposition dump in different ways because it was for children. The nostalgia simping and hindsight 20/20 musings of the show that everyone has had for 20+ years is blinding everyone to the extremely creative adaptation.
It is not as good as the cartoon, but it isn't wholly trash TV. If we, as geeks and nerds, can mostly agree that the Revenge of the Sith is a masterpiece despite its obvious flaws in dialogue and story telling, then we can at least try to appreciate the live action adaptation of our beloved ATLA. The cast and crew obviously have love for the original work. That being said, it could have been another Witcher fiasco. The showrunners had no love fpr the source material. The makers of NATLA simply do not have that same contempt for their own source material.
I wish I could like this comment more than once. I was telling someone the other day that the hate for the Netflix Avatar reminds me of how people used to talk about the Star Wars prequels. Even down to making disparaging comments about the younger cast members acting. Now most people can acknowledge that while the prequels weren’t perfect there were aspects that were great and they didn’t deserve the level of hate they got. There are even people who prefer the prequels to the original trilogy. The same way people hated on Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man at the time and now people speak positively about his performance. I think the same turn around will happen with the Netflix Avatar.
I love that you don’t cut out when you get emotional, it shows how great the show is and how much you really love the content you are watching

Episode one was phenomenal. I love how dark and serious they made the war look when the Fire Nation wiped out the Air Nomads, the bending looks superb, the fights are well choreographed , 10/10 episode for me 💥❤
When gran gran said the og opening I just about passed out!! I'm not disappointed at all n I've seen the og like 5 or 6 times
Of course no one's made about katara and sokka getting race swapped 😂😂
@@aceofspade6301katara and sokkas actors are still native american just like the show. Only difference is theyre paler but they still resemble the characters especially. And tbh I'd rather have them portray the characters right and look a little paler than them look identical and be a terrible actor

It’s best to watch this as its own show. People looking for changes will hate it. I think it’s great, and I really hope we get a season 2.

The Major change is that the back story is played out as part of the story and not just providing as a memory
As insane as sozin was, i still blame the overall structure of fire nation conquest. He was finally made fire lord, and then his own best friend, and brother in law, spends his life primarily getting in the way of him building his legacy. besides feeling betrayed, sozins "this is our time" seems like an old mans last attempt to prevent his nation from being stopped by the avatar.
Omg this was actually really good
i was very happy with this first episode and honestly the only difference for me is the comedy portions of the cartoon was taken out which im ok with.

There is a lot they’ve done right. But they were JUST off in so many ways, too. Leaving off certain layers of character development bothered me. Sokka should be more weirded out by Katara’s water bending. Aang not asking for Katara to go penguin sledding.
The good things:
Zuko and Iroh. SO well done.
Visuals. SPECTACULAR. The sets were spot on perfect.
Effects are great.
Character interactions. Despite some shortcomings on character development, certain interactions feel drawn straight from the source material.
What’s missing:
I feel like they left out great moments from the cartoon that could have fine a long way to making things feel a bit more nostalgic.
I need Aang to get a bit more sidetracked. He’s a kid and they did pretty well displaying that. But he needs to goof off a bit more.
Sokka has some great comedic moments but I think they dialed it back too much. One of the most iconic early lines from Sokka is “Why is it every time you play with magic water, I get soaked!” He needs to have more superstitiously prejudiced vibes against bending.
Plot changes are fine. I wish it didn’t feel so rushed but with only 8 episodes it still has the same issue that the movie had back in the day. Too much content not enough time.
And the new content, which is cool, btw, is to the detriment of things being left out (Aang and Katara exploring the Fire Nation ship).
Close. It is really close. It is highly enjoyable but also leaves me yearning for just a little bit more. There are great sequences here. Some new, some drawn straight from the source material. I just wish they’d done a bit more to try to breathe the spirit of the original into the new.
