John Theodore > Dave Elitch > Prigden. Prigden is techincally good (they all are) but he didnt have any idea how to make percussion fit into a song like Theodore did and Elitch does.

Dave Elitch is hands down one of the best new drummers today. His technique is flawless and he is playing with tons of taste and passion. I've personally learned a ton from him.

His employers, Mars Volta WANTED it. And as far as his gear goes, he's endorsed by DW. I'm sure John Goode over at DW can replace any gear he needs replacing. Yes indeed, it's very very hard to break parts of the drumkit. Cymbals break when they're mounted to tight, skins tear when tensioned unevenly (or too tight as well), or beaten with broken drumsticks repeatedly . Given that this doesn't apply on such a serious gig with proper gear and a skilled drummer, The only thing that will break every now and then is the simple drumstick.
This is the most impressive thing I've seen from Dave. I felt the beginning lacked a lot of flare from the recorded version but it seems like he just wanted to get the skeleton of the groove going without all the frilly fills and constant attack but once he got going and laid into the kit, I was shocked and very pleased. Started to look like Jon Theodore for a while which is a good thing except Jon would've been stomping 16th's on the hi-hat the whole time though lol
All you haters saying he's playing "too hard". Do ya not realize he is feeding off of the crowd goin apeshit and his lead singer throwin his symbol across the stage. It's called goin with the flow during a kick ass concert. His energy is what makes this song. Freakin epic
Dave Elitch is one of the best drummers I've ever seem! Great inspiration! I've been a Metal drummer my whole life, this guy with Carter Beauford changed everything... I watch their videos before lock myself into to my drum room everyday!
I'm 100% positive that if he really wanted to, he could play like either of them with some practice and actually sound like the albums. But who cares? Omar and Cedric have both said that they don't want to sound exactly the same live as the do on the album. The Mars Volta is a band based on experimenting with different things. Isn't kind of sad that some of their fans are so closed-minded?
Ok Dave and Thomas have been good friends for years so trying to pit them against each other is pretty funny. Shows what you know. Dave is an unreal percussionist. Look at his previous work too. It's so diverse and has so much range it's crazy. Lastly he's one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet. Even if you talked shit like you know what you're talking about been though you don't. I'm fuck in proud to call Dave my friend.
I'm prob gonna get ripped apart for this...but I've watched this video 100 or more times and watched Pridgen do the same song...I like Dave Elitch's style a lot more...he plays with more "authority" (for lack of better terms) His accents and pocket grooves just seem to gel better, to me. Just my opinion...let the rippin' and tearin' begin!

When I saw TMV live, Pridgen got like 4 solos, combined with his overplaying on just about every part, I felt like I went to see Pridgen Feat. the Mars Volta. Very disappointed.

How can that not hurt his hands and arms? I suffer from nerve damage from hitting too hard. I read in an article that Dillenger Escape Plan asked him to not hit so hard. He's not with them anymore so I guess the answer was "no". He's proficient so at least his flailing is not a gimmick. I like how he buries his head in the snare when the song is over!

dave is such a mix of rock pounding and slick gospel stylings. he's like, the perfect guy to replace thomas. i actually think he should've been the 1st guy they called, no bust to thomas. he's just and all around monster on the kit. plus, he's such a funky white guy. i guess all that gospel rubbed off on him.
is this the sydney BDO 2010? saw some of this set, was pretty sick but i was a little disappointed by pridgen getting kicked out. still, this guy is a pretty solid replacement, and he gets into it like crazy.

When Jon left TMV the majority weren't a fan of Thomas and said he had to be more like Jon. When Thomas left, now everybody's saying that Thomas is better than Dave, and Dave should be more like Thomas!!!!! Hell, they're all fantastic drummers, in my mind!

Elitch is a great drummer. I saw him a couple of years ago & I knew then. Incredible. The same with Pridgen. They are both cold drummers. Theodore is great, too. They all brought (bring) something a little different to the table. As long as it sounds good & they're not totally destroying the song I don't see what the problem is. That stuff isn't easy to play. They all must've been doing something right.

Omar said in an interview he never did invented or did anything for the band, he didn't even liked omars music, he was there for the money, he just asked omar "ok what do i do now?, This? Ok".. and when pridgen came to the band he was always suggesting ideas and things he could do and loved his music and working with TMV.. Jon Theodore was not good to the band, what you hear in their first 2 CD's is invented fully by omar, just that JT is playing it..

He is a back up drummer for the band. He's obviously not going to play anything everything down perfectly. Remember that he has to play a whole set list of insanely long songs along that completely change during live performances. If you want to see him in action, just look at his channel. I love both JT and TP respectively. They both did awesome jobs in the albums they performed in. That being said, it's ignorant and arrogant to say that Dave can't play like JT or TP.
@BestoftheGanj Seriously? I could'nt care less for Jon Theodore.. His drumming was pretty uninspiring. Omar once said that most of the "odd" were written by their first drummer, Blake Flemming, anyway, and most of the time he and Cedric had to tell him what to play because he did'nt come up with anything himself. I'm sure he's a great drummer but it does'nt seem like he wants to be in the band, which is why they fired him in the first place. I'd say give this guy a chance, he seems to enjoy it.

Why does this band always come flat when they play live, but their studio albums always sound amazing? I swear, I have seen so many live videos of them live, and seen them live in person, and it never comes close to the electricity they make on their albums. If you listen to this song on their album, the drumming is phenomenal, and cedric's voice is outstanding...here is sounds soooo flat. I know this is a drum video, but come on.

Some of you guys need to relax. So I, as much as any other TMV fan, am disappointed that TP left the band but you have to realize that this guy is damn good too. Ok, so he's no TP but he gets the job done and has his moments where he shows off too. Just because he's not doing crazy fills and licks 24/7 doesn't make him crap. I'm guessing that its gonna sound more like when Jon Theodore was the drummer, which is A-OK with me seeing that this band is sick regardless. my 2 cents.
this vid is from big day out by the looks of it saw them play at BDO in sydney and at the side show not too fond of thier new drummer, he kinda showboats in bad ways and realy unnecisarly does things its strange 1:08-1:12 is one example or unessesary bell acents in the middle of random soft parts to a song witch makes shit seem out of place and crap. thomas was so much better. like they said they wanted someone more disaplined and not bulshit crazy pridgen could be very disaplined when he want
i love all the Mars Volta's drummers...I love Theodore the most but I'm really diggin this guy and the whole "getting back into the groove thing" instead of "insanely complex drumming"...maybe that's just me tho ; P
To help close some arguements Pridgen, Elitch and Theodore all are gods in their own way. Yet their styles are similar, hence why TMV had chosen them to fill when the other was dismissed. All I know is I wish I could play as good as either of them because they are all in their own universe when it comes to drums. No doubt about that.

Another reason to dislike Cedric (6:40-7:50). As a drummer that crap pisses me off. TMV has a revolving door of AMZING drummers Dave will last 2 albums and then Cedric or Omar will be an ass and he'll leave. John Theodor was awesome, but Thomas will still be my favorite.

@Bulldog22031 Nice post! Omar was too eager to mess with original chemistry of the band... im glad i saw them on FTM tour, it will never be the same. I found pridgen to be vulgar and loud and his jamming sensibilities were bad. Still a drumming pioneer but a nightmare for everyone else.
@Bulldog22031 I'm biased p Thomas Pridgen is my favourite drummer :) I think his drumming with Christian Scott is incredible; it's all about taste though, so people shouldn't care if not everyone thinks that their favourite drummer is the best - there is no best, just different I think

Dave had the balls to jump right in and by the looks of this video he fucking kills it in his own style. Who cares if he is hitting hard? If I were playing with TMV I'de be hitting the fuck out of my drums too.
If he were in any other band and you didn't have Thomas to compare him too you would all be talking about how great he is.

Omar said in an interview he never did invented or did anything for the band, he didn't even liked omars music, he was there for the money, he just asked omar "ok what do i do now?, This? Ok".. and when pridgen came to the band he was always suggesting ideas and things he could do and loved his music and working with TMV..
Jon Theodore was not good to the band, what you hear in their first 2 CD's is invented fully by omar, just that JT is playing it..
@quibb666 yup.the thing that bothers me most is that he takes all the credit only because he plays in metallica.he is even voted regularly as best drummer in various polls.there are
tons of players who are are waaaay better than him, only that they are not as popular and rich as him.
my favourite drummers are paul bostaph, pridgen, brain from primus, and terry bozzio.

He is a back up drummer for the band. He's obviously not going to play anything everything down perfectly. Remember that he has to play a whole set list of insanely long songs along that completely change during live performances. If you want to see him in action, just look at his channel. I love both JT and TP respectively. They both did awesome jobs in the albums they performed in. That being said, it's ignorant and arrogant to say that Dave can't play like JT or TP.
@BestoftheGanj Seriously? I could'nt care less for Jon Theodore.. His drumming was pretty uninspiring. Omar once said that most of the "odd" were written by their first drummer, Blake Flemming, anyway, and most of the time he and Cedric had to tell him what to play because he did'nt come up with anything himself. I'm sure he's a great drummer but it does'nt seem like he wants to be in the band, which is why they fired him in the first place. I'd say give this guy a chance, he seems to enjoy it.

Thomas P. was kicked out of TMV because he got wasted after a show one night and pissed all over the other guys bunks on the tour bus. He and cedric bumped head constantly aswell. Its better for the music. The next album is gonna blow some minds.

Why does this band always come flat when they play live, but their studio albums always sound amazing? I swear, I have seen so many live videos of them live, and seen them live in person, and it never comes close to the electricity they make on their albums. If you listen to this song on their album, the drumming is phenomenal, and cedric's voice is outstanding...here is sounds soooo flat. I know this is a drum video, but come on.
??why wont he crash on one, after the cymbal mute in the chorus? he goes into that gospel chops fill too early. that first fill he does is sick tho. you can tell something is up when cedric and omar are giving him the drummer look a handful of times during this song. and he needs to lose the 16th note hihat during the verse, its kinda odd.. The album 8th notes were straight... whatever
Some of you guys need to relax. So I, as much as any other TMV fan, am disappointed that TP left the band but you have to realize that this guy is damn good too. Ok, so he's no TP but he gets the job done and has his moments where he shows off too. Just because he's not doing crazy fills and licks 24/7 doesn't make him crap. I'm guessing that its gonna sound more like when Jon Theodore was the drummer, which is A-OK with me seeing that this band is sick regardless. my 2 cents.

not too fond of thier new drummer, he kinda showboats in bad ways and realy unnecisarly does things its strange 1:08-1:12 is one example or unessesary bell acents in the middle of random soft parts to a song witch makes shit seem out of place and crap. thomas was so much better. like they said they wanted someone more disaplined and not bulshit crazy pridgen could be very disaplined when he want

i love all the Mars Volta's drummers...I love Theodore the most but I'm really diggin this guy and the whole "getting back into the groove thing" instead of "insanely complex drumming"...maybe that's just me tho ; P
To help close some arguements Pridgen, Elitch and Theodore all are gods in their own way. Yet their styles are similar, hence why TMV had chosen them to fill when the other was dismissed. All I know is I wish I could play as good as either of them because they are all in their own universe when it comes to drums. No doubt about that.
@Bulldog22031 well i mean. i look at thomas solos compared to JT solos and it just seems to me, thomas has alot more passion and overall rudiment abillity then john. like john tries to hard while thomas makes it look easy like anyone can do that stuff. cause lak he dont get no day job so lak thats awl he can do. everyone on youtube must be absolute drum experts. cool, didnt know so many other people could play some volta better than this. probably just call up omar and let him know he didnt know what he was thinking getting elitch to play and tell him youre a better fit for the job. not saying hes the best by any means, but im sure he's better than the rest of the haters.

TMV has a revolving door of AMZING drummers Dave will last 2 albums and then Cedric or Omar will be an ass and he'll leave. John Theodor was awesome, but Thomas will still be my favorite.
@FerdinelloMusic I would also like to add at 7:30 while Dave is jump kicking his kick drum (which I think is perfect)....you can see a huge section of the crowd jumping up and down. Which one of you youtube losers can say you've done that? No one....including myself.
@Bulldog22031 Nice post! Omar was too eager to mess with original chemistry of the band... im glad i saw them on FTM tour, it will never be the same. I found pridgen to be vulgar and loud and his jamming sensibilities were bad. Still a drumming pioneer but a nightmare for everyone else.
@Bulldog22031 I'm biased p Thomas Pridgen is my favourite drummer :) I think his drumming with Christian Scott is incredible; it's all about taste though, so people shouldn't care if not everyone thinks that their favourite drummer is the best - there is no best, just different I think
@WillWatson23 to say this guy can't play anything like their previous drummers just shows ignorance on your part, you clearly haven't checked him out, and who said they wanted someone who plays like pridgen or theodore? Maybe they were going for something different anyway.
