When I was quite small, 1-4 years old, my grandfather had a summer place in southern Wisconsin. He rented most of the acreage to the farmer across the highway. Along a gravel lane that gave access to some of the fields there was also a woodlot and raspberries grew along the margin. As little kids we always thought they were wild and did nothing to maintain them but there were plenty for us little people and grammy to pick each morning in season.

My Heritage red raspberry canes have their first crop on the tips in the fall. mid-Sept. to as late as Nov.20.
I cut the primicanes to 3-4' around Summer solstice and the canes bifurcate. After the primocane harvest, cut back 4-8" below the now spent flowering/fruiting tips. This will make the canes stouter. I keep mine between 4-5' high. (This variety can send up 7' canes, which droop and can break under the weight of berries if not pruned.)
Heritage raspberries usually give their greatest yields on the primocanes in fall, but here in MN a hard frost can kill some or nearly all before ripening. Our June-July harvest is quite abundant, and we fill our freezer, make jam, and invite neighbors to pick them, too.

I built a "cage" from PVC pipe & used poly twine (replaceable) to trap the vines inside. They're growing "wild" inside and go in the direction they choose. This year it's going to be a bumper crop.

Is it possible to stop by pinching out the growing tip of raspberry canes when growing to encourage extra stems to grow up and increase yield? Works with chrysanthemums but not sure about raspberries. Anyone tried this?

It works for blackberries so l don't see why not. There is an explanation as to the science in the comments.

Yes, all brambles, of which raspberries are, you pinch the top growing tip at about 4-6 foot depending on your desired height, and usually, you will get 3-5 laterials that will develop.

@@matthewfarrell317 l tested this on my raspberries instead of just theorising and you are correct.

I see. My raspberry plants are about 5 or 6 feet tall. I've never pruned the long living stems I just let them grow and they continue to produce fruit year after year. I pruned the dead stems a few months ago. Should I be pruning them all like you said Andrew? Thanks as always

+Isa ahmad Hi there. You will increase the amount of fruit produced by pruning. I would remove about a third of the stems in the Autumn making sure you leave any new growth from this year. I hope this helps. Andrew

Thank you Andrew. You're my new best friend :) Should I do the same with my blackberry & blueberry bushes? Just prune 1/3 of them away in autumn? Ta

Great vid as always guys. Can you tell me if there are any differences for autumn fruiting raspberries such as "Autumn Bliss" - I currently have these in containers but have been thinking of starting a bed for both raspberries and strawberries and why not use plants I already have!?

+Dan Boyles Hi Dan, Padraic here the guy who helps Andrew with the videos. Andrew is out of the office until Monday and I just saw your comment - but he will get to you then. I know a bit myself about raspberries but Andrew is the expert so I prefer him to reply to you. Thanks for watching and leaving comments. By the way is there any subject you would like to see us do a video on - do tell and hopefully we will get around to doing it.

+Quickcrop Hi Dan, Autumn fruiting varieties are cut down to the ground in late Winter and then trained to the supports when they grow back in Spring. You can also make cuttings from these prunings and propagate new plants. Cheers, Tony.

Some raspberries are pruned in the spring. Those that fruit in the late summer

+Anders Spælling Hi Anders. Yes, I probably should have mentioned that, I was referring to the variety in my garden which are Summer rather than Autumn fruiting varieties. Thanks for your comment and for sharing the information. Andrew

I have autumn variety mixed thru my raspberry patch ... they fruit on current year shoots. I can tell them apart from different stems so do not prune incorrectly.

Fence posts tend to be treated so I wouldn't put them anywhere near my food, not even pressure treated.
